We consider an operation K \to L(K) on the set of simplicial complexes, which we call the "doubling operation". This combinatorial operation has been recently brought into toric topology by the work of Bahri, Bendersky, Cohen and Gitler on generalised moment-angle complexes (also known as K-powers). The crucial property of the doubling operation is that the moment-angle complex Z_K can be identified with the real moment-angle complex RZ_L(K) for the double L(K). As an application we prove the toral rank conjecture for Z_K by estimating the lower bound of the cohomology rank (with rational coefficients) of real moment-angle complexes RZ_K$. This paper extends the results of our previous work, where the doubling operation for polytopes was used to prove the toral rank conjecture for moment-angle manifolds.
The toral rank conjecture speculates that the sum of the Betti numbers of a compact manifold admitting a free action of a torus of rank $r$ is bounded from below by $2^r$. Clearly, such an action yields a torus bundle, and, more generally, the same cohomological bound is conjectured for total spaces of suitable topological torus fibrations by Félix--Oprea--Tanré. In this article we show that this generalised toral rank conjecture cannot hold by providing various different counter-examples to it (for each rank $r\geq 5$). In particular, we show that there are sequences of smooth nilpotent fibre…
We use Boij-Söderberg theory to give two lower bounds for the dimension of the cohomology of a finite CW-complex in terms of the toral rank and certain Betti numbers of the space. One of our bounds turns out to be particularly effective for c-symplectic spaces, proving the toral rank conjecture for c-symplectic spaces of formal dimension $\leq 8$.
An action of a compact Lie group is called equivariantly formal, if the Leray--Serre spectral sequence of its Borel fibration degenerates at the E_2-term. This term is as prominent as it is restrictive. In this article, also motivated by the lack of junction between the notion of equivariant formality and the concept of formality of spaces (surging from rational homotopy theory) we suggest two new variations of equivariant formality: "MOD-formal actions" and "actions of formal core". We investigate and characterize these new terms in many different ways involving various tools from rational ho…
We show that counterexamples of Iyengar and Walker to the algebraic version of Gunnar Carlsson's conjecture on the rank of the homology of a free complex can be extended to examples over any finite group with many choices of the complex.
Let $G$ be a finite group and $\mathcal{A}_p(G)$ be the poset of nontrivial elementary abelian $p$-subgroups of $G$. Quillen conjectured that $O_p(G)$ is nontrivial if $\mathcal{A}_p(G)$ is contractible. We prove that $O_p(G)\neq 1$ for any group $G$ admitting a $G$-invariant acyclic $p$-subgroup complex of dimension $2$. In particular, it follows that Quillen's conjecture holds for groups of $p$-rank $3$. We also apply this result to establish Quillen's conjecture for some particular groups not considered in the seminal work of Aschbacher--Smith.
Higher-order connectivity in complex systems described by simplexes of different orders provides a geometry for simplex-based dynamical variables and interactions. Simplicial complexes that constitute a functional geometry of the human connectome can be crucial for the brain complex dynamics. In this context, the best-connected brain areas, designated as hub nodes, play a central role in supporting integrated brain function. Here, we study the structure of simplicial complexes attached to eight global hubs in the female and male connectomes and identify the core networks among the affected bra…
