We investigate the capability of neural network-based model order reduction, i.e., autoencoder (AE), for fluid flows. As an example model, an AE which comprises of a convolutional neural network and multi-layer perceptrons is considered in this study. The AE model is assessed with four canonical fluid flows, namely: (1) two-dimensional cylinder wake, (2) its transient process, (3) NOAA sea surface temperature, and (4) $y-z$ sectional field of turbulent channel flow, in terms of a number of latent modes, a choice of nonlinear activation functions, and a number of weights contained in the AE model. We find that the AE models are sensitive against the choice of the aforementioned parameters depending on the target flows. Finally, we foresee the extensional applications and perspectives of machine learning based order reduction for numerical and experimental studies in fluid dynamics community.
Something as simple as Couette and Poiseuille onedimensional flow of a newtonian fluid between infinite parallel walls provides an illuminating example of the contrasting physics of laminar and turbulent flow: the difference between their mean velocity profiles has in one regime the opposite sign than in the other. This easily verifiable but yet unnoticed behaviour implies that the physical mechanisms of laminar and turbulent transport are even more fundamentally different than ordinarily presumed.
Annular Couette flow is the flow between two coaxial cylinders driven by the axial translation of the inner cylinder. It is investigated using direct numerical simulation in long domains, with an emphasis on the laminar-turbulent coexistence regime found for marginally low values of the Reynolds number. Three distinct flow regimes are demonstrated as the radius ratio $η$ is decreased from 0.8 to 0.5 and finally to 0.1. The high-$η$ regime features helically-shaped turbulent patches coexisting with laminar flow, as in planar shear flows. The moderate-$η$ regime does not feature any marked lamin…
On the dynamics of laminar-turbulent patterns in plane Couette flow
在较宽的雷诺数R范围内,平面Couette流动在低雷诺数R_t时的全局稳定基流剖面之间呈现规则的斜向层流流型<R_g and a uniformly turbulent regime at sufficiently large R>。数值模拟,我们已经进行了一个模式显示波长调制的松弛,该调制与人们所期望的标准方法在扩展的几何耗散结构方面,虽然结构发展的湍流背景。一些后果进行了讨论。
Liquid-infused surfaces (LIS) can reduce friction drag in both laminar and turbulent flows. However, the heat transfer properties of such multi-phase surfaces have still not been investigated to a large extent. We use numerical simulations to study conjugate heat transfer of liquid-filled grooves. It is shown that heat transfer can increase for both laminar and turbulent liquid flows due to recirculation in the surface texture. For the increase to be substantial, the thermal conductivity of the solid must be similar to the thermal conductivity of the fluids, and the recirculation in the groove…
The present work demonstrates the use of resolvent analysis to obtain physical insights for open-cavity flows. Resolvent analysis identifies the flow response to harmonic forcing, given a steady base state, in terms of the response and forcing modes and the amplification gain. The response and forcing modes reveal the spatial structures associated with this amplification process. In this study, we perform resolvent analysis on both laminar and turbulent flows over a rectangular cavity with length-to-depth ratio of $L/D=6$ at a free stream Mach number of $M_\infty=0.6$ in a spanwise periodic se…
Two well-known turbulence models that describe the energy spectrum in the inertial and dissipative ranges simultaneously are by Pao~(1965) and Pope~(2000). In this paper, we compute the energy spectrum $E(k)$ and energy flux $Π(k)$ using direct numerical simulations on grids up to $4096^3$, and show consistency between the numerical results and the predictions by the aforementioned models. We also construct a model for laminar flows that predicts $E(k)\sim k^{-1} \exp(-k)$ and $Π(k)\sim k \exp(-k)$. Our model predictions match with the numerical results. We emphasize differences on the energy …
This paper presents a study on wave cancellation in forced jets. Building on recent work on real-time control of forced turbulent jets [1,2], we here assess the effect of jet upstream conditions and nonlinearity on wave-cancellation performance. The experiments are performed in jets with laminar and turbulent boundary layers inside the nozzle. An open-loop campaign is first conducted, in which the goal is to analyse the jet response to stochastic forcing with variable bandwidth. The upstream conditions of the jet are found to have a strong influence on the jet response. For narrow forcing band…
We present a machine learning-based mesh refinement technique for steady and unsteady flows. The clustering technique proposed by Otmani et al. arXiv:2207.02929 [physics.flu-dyn] is used to mark the viscous and turbulent regions for the flow past a cylinder at Re=40 (steady laminar flow) and Re=3900 (unsteady turbulent flow). Within this clustered region, we increase the polynomial order to show that it is possible to obtain similar levels of accuracy to a uniformly refined mesh. The method is effective as the clustering successfully identifies the two flow regions, a viscous/turbulent dominat…
This paper presents a flame-height correlation for laminar to transition-to-turbulent regime diffusion flames. Flame-height measurements are obtained by means of numerical and experimental studies in which three high definition cameras were employed to take frontal, lateral and 45° angled images simultaneously. The images were analysed using an image-processing algorithm to determine the flame-height through indirect measurement. To locate an overall chemical-flame-length, numerical simulations were conducted with the unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes technique. The eddy-dissipation mod…
The effect of slip surfaces on the laminar-turbulent separatrix of plane Poiseuille flow is studied by direct numerical simulation. Turbulence lifetimes, the likelihood that turbulence is sustained, is investigated for transitional flows with various slip lengths. Slip surfaces decrease the likelihood of sustained turbulence compared to the no-slip case, and likelihood is further decreased as slip length is increased. A deterministic analysis of the effects of slip surfaces on transition to turbulence is performed using nonlinear traveling wave solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations, also kn…
Reported in the paper are results of unsteady three-dimensional direct numerical simulations of laminar and turbulent, lean hydrogen-air, complex-chemistry flames propagating in forced turbulence in a box. To explore the eventual influence of thermo-diffusive instability of laminar flames on turbulent burning velocity, (i) a critical length scale Λn that bounds regimes of unstable and stable laminar combustion is numerically determined by gradually decreasing the width Λ of computational domain until a stable laminar flame is obtained and (ii) simulations of turbulent flames are performed by v…
Gyrotactic algae are bottom heavy, motile cells whose swimming direction is determined by a balance between a buoyancy torque directing them upwards and fluid velocity gradients. Gyrotaxis has, in recent years, become a paradigmatic model for phytoplankton motility in flows. The essential attractiveness of this peculiar form of motility is the availability of a mechanistic description which, despite its simplicity, revealed predictive, rich in phenomenology, easily complemented to include the effects of shape, feed-back on the fluid and stochasticity (e.g. in cell orientation). In this review …
Many aquatic microorganisms are able to swim. In natural environments they typically do so in the presence of flows. In recent years it has been shown that the interplay of swimming and flows can give rise to interesting and biologically relevant phenomena, such as accumulation of microorganisms in specific flow regions and local alignment with the flow properties. Here, we consider a mechanical model for elongated microswimmers in a Kolmogorov flow, a prototypic shear flow, both in steady and in turbulent conditions. By means of direct numerical simulations, supported by analytical calculatio…
