Something as simple as Couette and Poiseuille onedimensional flow of a newtonian fluid between infinite parallel walls provides an illuminating example of the contrasting physics of laminar and turbulent flow: the difference between their mean velocity profiles has in one regime the opposite sign than in the other. To determine the boundary between convective and absolute instability, we use Orr--Sommerfeld stability theory, and a combination of linear modal analysis and ray analysis. Plane Couette flow presents a regular oblique turbulent-laminar pattern over a wide range of Reynolds numbers R between the globally stable base flow profile at low R<R_g and a uniformly turbulent regime at sufficiently large R>R_t. Building on recent work on real-time control of forced turbulent jets [1,2], we here assess the effect of jet upstream conditions and nonlinearity on wave-cancellation performance. Motivated by experiments performed in superfluid helium, we study numerically the motion of toroidal bundles of vortex filaments in an inviscid fluid. We find that the evolution of these large-scale vortex structures involves the generalised leapfrogging of the constituent vortex rings. Despite three dimensional perturbations in the form of Kelvin waves and vortex reconnections, toroidal vortex bundles retain their coherence over a relatively large distance (compared to their size), in agreement with experimental observations.

This paper concerns the study of direct numerical simulation (DNS) data of a wavepacket in laminar turbulent transition in a Blasius boundary layer. The decomposition of this wavepacket into a set of "modes" (a basis that spans an approximate solution space) can be achieved in a wide variety of ways. Two well-known tools are the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD).
