Liquid-infused surfaces (LIS) can reduce friction drag in both laminar and turbulent flows. However, the heat transfer properties of such multi-phase surfaces have still not been investigated to a large extent. We use numerical simulations to study conjugate heat transfer of liquid-filled grooves. It is shown that heat transfer can increase for both laminar and turbulent liquid flows due to recirculation in the surface texture. For the increase to be substantial, the thermal conductivity of the solid must be similar to the thermal conductivity of the fluids, and the recirculation in the grooves must be sufficiently strong (Péclet number larger than 1). The ratio of the surface cavity to the system height is an upper limit of the direct contribution from the recirculation. While this ratio can be significant for laminar flows in microchannels, it is limited for turbulent flows, where the system scale (e.g. channel height) usually is much larger than the texture height. However, heat transfer enhancement on the order of $10\%$ is observed (with a net drag reduction) in a turbulent channel flow at a friction Reynolds number $Re_τ\approx 180$. It is shown that the turbulent convection in the bulk can be enhanced indirectly from the recirculation in the grooves.
The paper is devoted to the study of the formation of stratification in an incompressible fluid due to convective laminar flows in horizontal layers heated from the side. Medium and intensive modes of stationary laminar thermal, concentrational and thermo-concentrational (in particular thermohaline) convection are considered, in which nonlinear flow features are manifested, which can radically change the flow structure and the characteristics of heat and mass transfer. The solutions of the problems of laminar problems of convection show the features of the formation of layered structures, vert…
A comprehensive study of the problem of laminar film condensation with both a gravitational type body force and a moving vapour concurrent and parallel to the surface has been presented here. It demonstrates where both the body force and vapour velocity are significant through a comprehensive numerical solution obtained by a modified Keller box method. Important parameters governing condensation and heat transfer of pure vapour are determined. A perturbation analysis is applied in the leading edge and downstream regimes. The thin film approximations for the both regimes are obtained and compar…
Liquid-infused surfaces (LIS) are a promising technique for reducing friction, fouling and icing in both laminar and turbulent flows. Previous work has demonstrated that these surfaces are susceptible to shear-driven drainage. Here, we report a different failure mode using direct numerical simulations of a turbulent channel flow with liquid-infused longitudinal grooves. When the liquid-liquid surface tension is small and/or grooves are wide, we observe traveling-wave perturbations on the interface with amplitudes larger than the viscous sublayer of the turbulent flow. These capillary waves ind…
This article represents a set of results numerically studied in the framework of laminar double diffusive natural convection. We have investigated the thermophysical comportment of Water-based incompressible nanofluids circulating, due to buoyancy forces, inside a two-dimensional enclosed rectangular cavity for two comparable cases of considering or not a centered isothermal block. Results of this investigation are mainly built on parametric study of the most analytical variables that govern the flow. The buoyancy ratio ranged from -5 to 100, while Rayleigh number ranged from 103 to 106, and L…
Natural convection from a stack of isothermal solid horizontal cylinders has been investigated numerically in a three dimensional computational domain. Simulations were conducted in both laminar and turbulent flow regimes of Rayleigh number (Ra) spanning in the range (10^4 to 10^8) and (10^10 to 10^13), respectively. In the present study, the length to diameter ratio of the cylinders has been varied in the range 0.5 to 20. Three different stack arrangements were considered for the numerical simulations by arranging three, six and ten number of cylinders in a triangular manner. The present comp…
In the above paper [Chaos, Solitons & Fractals, 13 (2002) 1843-1850] the author treats the boundary layer flow along a vertical isothermal plate of an electrically conducting fluid. The plate lies in a vertical free stream of constant velocity $u_\infty$, constant temperature $T_\infty$ and constant mass concentration $C_\infty$. The plate moves vertically with a velocity which is a linear function of distance $x$ ($u_w=cx$). A transverse magnetic field with constant strength $B_0$ is imposed on the flow. The boundary layer equations are integrated numerically. However, there is a fundamental …
Laminar natural convection at unity Schmidt number over a horizontal surface with a weak normal velocity at the wall is studied using an integral analysis. To characterise the strength of the blowing, we define a non-dimensional parameter called the blowing parameter. After benchmarking with the no blowing case, the effect of the blowing parameter on boundary layer thickness, velocity and concentration profiles is obtained. Weak blowing is seen to increase the wall shear stress. For blowing parameters greater than unity, the diffusional flux at the wall becomes negligible and the flux is almos…
We investigate the dependency of the magnitude of heat transfer in a convection cell as a function of its inclination by means of experiments and simulations. The study is performed with a working fluid of large Prandtl number, $Pr \simeq 480$, and at Rayleigh numbers $Ra \simeq 10^{8}$ and $Ra \simeq 5 \times 10^{8}$ in a quasi-two-dimensional rectangular cell with unit aspect ratio. By changing the inclination angle ($β$) of the convection cell, the character of the flow can be changed from moderately turbulent, for $β= 0^o$, to laminar and steady at $β= 90^o$. The global heat transfer is fo…

The present work focuses on the study of mixed convection of a purely viscous shear-thinning fluid in a horizontal annular eccentric duct. The inner and outer cylinders are heated with constant and uniform heat flux densities. The objective of this work is to study the effect of the variation of eccentricity, rheological behavior of the fluid as well as the thermodependency of the rheological parameters on the reorganization of the flow and thermal stratification caused by the buoyancy forces. At the entrance of the heating zone, the dynamic regime is assumed to be established and the temperat…
High-speed boundary-layer transition is extremely sensitive to the free-stream disturbances which are often uncertain. This uncertainty compromises predictions of models and simulations. To enhance the fidelity of simulations, we directly infuse them with available observations. Our methodology is general and can be adopted with any simulation tool, and is herein demonstrated using direct numerical simulations. An ensemble variational (EnVar) optimization is performed, whereby we determine the upstream flow that optimally reproduces the observations. The cost functional accounts for our relati…
A starting plume or jet has a well-defined, evolving head that is driven through the surrounding quiescent fluid by a localized flux of either buoyancy or momentum, or both. We studied the scaling and morphology of starting plumes produced by a constant flux of buoyant fluid from a small, submerged outlet. The plumes were laminar and spanned a wide range of plume Richardson numbers Ri. Ri is the dimensionless ratio of the buoyancy forces to inertial effects, and is thus our measurements crossed over the transition between buoyancy-driven plumes and momentum-driven jets. We found that the ascen…
We report a new thermal boundary layer equation for turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection for Prandtl number Pr>1 that takes into account the effect of turbulent fluctuations. These fluctuations are neglected in existing equations, which are based on steady-state and laminar assumptions. Using this new equation, we derive analytically the mean temperature profiles in two limits: (a) Pr>1, Pr~1 and (b) Pr>>1. These two theoretical predictions are in excellent agreement with the results of our direct numerical simulations for Pr=4.38 (water) and Pr=2547.9 (glycerol) respectively.
We numerically investigate the structures of the near-plate temperature profiles close to the bottom and top plates of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard flow in a cylindrical sample at Rayleigh numbers Ra=10^8 to Ra=2\times10^{12} and Prandtl numbers Pr=6.4 and Pr=0.7 with the dynamical frame method [Q. Zhou and K.-Q. Xia, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 104301 (2010)] thus extending previous results for quasi-2-dimensional systems to 3D systems for the first time. The dynamical frame method shows that the measured temperature profiles in the spatially and temporally local frame are much closer to the temperatu…
The shape of velocity and temperature profiles near the horizontal conducting plates in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection are studied numerically and experimentally over the Rayleigh number range $10^8\lesssim Ra\lesssim3\times10^{11}$ and the Prandtl number range $0.7\lesssim Pr\lesssim5.4$. The results show that both the temperature and velocity profiles well agree with the classical Prandtl-Blasius laminar boundary-layer profiles, if they are re-sampled in the respective dynamical reference frames that fluctuate with the instantaneous thermal and velocity boundary-layer thicknesses.
The structure of the boundary layers in turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection is studied by means of three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. We consider convection in a cylindrical cell at an aspect ratio one for Rayleigh numbers of Ra=3e+9 and 3e+10 at fixed Prandtl number Pr=0.7. Similar to the experimental results in the same setup and for the same Prandtl number, the structure of the laminar boundary layers of the velocity and temperature fields is found to deviate from the prediction of the Prandtl-Blasius-Pohlhausen theory. Deviations decrease when a dynamical rescaling of the dat…
This paper considers plane channel flow modified by waves of spanwise velocity applied at the wall and travelling along the streamwise direction. Laminar and turbulent regimes for the streamwise flow are both studied. When the streamwise flow is laminar, it is unaffected by the spanwise flow induced by the waves. This flow is a thin, unsteady and streamwise-modulated boundary layer that can be expressed in terms of the Airy function of the first kind. We name it the generalized Stokes layer because it reduces to the classical oscillating Stokes layer in the limit of infinite wave speed. When t…
Analysis of conjugate natural convection with surface radiation in a two-dimensional enclosure is carried out in order to search the optimal location of the heat source with entropy generation minimization (EGM) approach and conventional heat transfer parameters. The air as an incompressible fluid and transparent media is considered the fluid filling the enclosure with the steady and laminar regime. The enclosure internal surfaces are also gray, opaque and diffuse. The governing equations with stream function and vorticity formulation are solved using finite difference approach. Results includ…
This paper demonstrates the application of the density-based topology optimisation approach for the design of heat sinks and micropumps based on natural convection effects. The problems are modelled under the assumptions of steady-state laminar flow using the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled to the convection-diffusion equation through the Boussinesq approximation. In order to facilitate topology optimisation, the Brinkman approach is taken to penalise velocities inside the solid domain and the effective thermal conductivity is interpolated in order to accommodate differences in …
Numerical simulation of rotating convection in plane layers with free slip boundaries show that the convective flows can be classified according to a quantity constructed from the Reynolds, Prandtl and Ekman numbers. Three different flow regimes appear: Laminar flow close to the onset of convection, turbulent flow in which the heat flow approaches the heat flow of non-rotating convection, and an intermediate regime in which the heat flow scales according to a power law independent of thermal diffusivity and kinematic viscosity.
The non-hydrostatic, quasigeostrophic approximation for rapidly rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection admits a class of exact `single mode' solutions. These solutions correspond to steady laminar convection with a separable structure consisting of a horizontal planform characterized by a single wavenumber multiplied by a vertical amplitude profile, with the latter given as the solution of a nonlinear boundary value problem. The heat transport associated with these solutions is studied in the regime of strong thermal forcing (large reduced Rayleigh number $\widetilde{Ra}$). It is shown that the N…
We study the velocity field in a horizontal (x-y) plane 1.5 mm above the hot plate in turbulent natural convection using PIV at a Rayleigh number Raw=106 and Prandtl number Pr=5.2. The plane of measurement is inside the velocity boundary layer estimated from the natural convection boundary layer equations[7] as well as inside the velocity boundary layer due to the large scale flow[2, 5].The boundary layer comprises of line plumes with sinking fluid between them. The instantaneous velocity variation from the center of the sinking fluid to the line plumes is found to deviate with the classical P…
We report measurements of the instantaneous viscous boundary layer (BL) thickness $δ_v(t)$ in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection. It is found that $δ_v(t)$ obtained from the measured instantaneous two-dimensional velocity field exhibits intermittent fluctuations. For small values, $δ_v(t)$ obeys a lognormal distribution, whereas for large values the distribution of $δ_v(t)$ exhibits an exponential tail. The variation of $δ_v(t)$ with time is found to be driven by the fluctuations of the large-scale mean flow velocity and the local horizontal velocities close to the plate can be used as an in…
We study Rayleigh-Benard convection in the high-Rayleigh-number and high-Prandtl-number regime, i.e., we consider a fluid in a container that is exposed to strong heating of the bottom and cooling of the top plate in the absence of inertia effects. While the dynamics in the bulk are characterized by a chaotic convective heat flow, the boundary layers at the horizontal container plates are essentially conducting and thus the fluid is motionless. Consequently, the average temperature exhibits a linear profile in the boundary layers. In this article, we rigorously investigate the average temperat…
This paper presents a numerical study of three-dimensional laminar mixed convection within a liquid flowing on a horizontal channel heated uniformly from below. The upper surface is free and assumed to be flat. The coupled Navier-Stokes and energy equations are solved numerically by the finite volume method taking into account the thermocapillary effects (Marangoni effect). When the strength of the buoyancy, thermocapillary effects and forced convective currents are comparable $(Ri\backsimeq O(1)$ and $Bd=Ra/Ma \backsimeq O(1))$, the results show that the development of instabilities in the fo…
The effect of rotation on the boundary layers (BLs) in a Rayleigh-Benard (RB) system at a relatively low Rayleigh number, i.e. $Ra = 4\times10^7$, is studied for different Pr by direct numerical simulations and the results are compared with laminar BL theory. In this regime we find a smooth onset of the heat transfer enhancement as function of increasing rotation rate. We study this regime in detail and introduce a model based on the Grossmann-Lohse theory to describe the heat transfer enhancement as function of the rotation rate for this relatively low Ra number regime and weak background rot…

Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) of thin flexible fins coupled with convective heat transfer has applications in energy harvesting and in understanding functioning of several biological systems. We numerically investigate FSI of the thin flexible fins involving large-scale flow-induced deformation as a potential heat transfer enhancement technique. An in-house, strongly-coupled fluid-structure interaction (FSI) solver is employed in which flow and structure solvers are based on sharp-interface immersed boundary and finite element method, respectively. We consider twin flexible fins in a heate…
We report experimental results for heat-transport measurements, in the form of the Nusselt number \Nu, by turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a cylindrical sample of aspect ratio $Γ\equiv D/L = 0.50$ ($D = 1.12$ m is the diameter and $L = 2.24$ m the height). The measurements were made using sulfur hexafluoride at pressures up to 19 bars as the fluid. They are for the Rayleigh-number range $3\times 10^{12} \alt \Ra \alt 10^{15}$ and for Prandtl numbers \Pra\ between 0.79 and 0.86. For $\Ra < \Ra^*_1 \simeq 1.4\times 10^{13}$ we find $\Nu = N_0 \Ra^{γ_{eff}}$ with $γ_{eff} = 0.312 \pm 0.002…
We investigate the structures of the near-plate velocity and temperature profiles at different horizontal positions along the conducting bottom (and top) plate of a Rayleigh-Bénard convection cell, using two-dimensional (2D) numerical data obtained at the Rayleigh number Ra=10^8 and the Prandtl number Pr=4.4 of an Oberbeck-Boussinesq flow with constant material parameters. The results show that most of the time, and for both velocity and temperature, the instantaneous profiles scaled by the dynamical frame method [Q. Zhou and K.-Q. Xia, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 104301 (2010) agree well with the c…
Results on the Prandtl-Blasius type kinetic and thermal boundary layer thicknesses in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a broad range of Prandtl numbers are presented. By solving the laminar Prandtl-Blasius boundary layer equations, we calculate the ratio of the thermal and kinetic boundary layer thicknesses, which depends on the Prandtl number Pr only. It is approximated as $0.588Pr^{-1/2}$ for $Pr\ll Pr^*$ and as $0.982 Pr^{-1/3}$ for $Pr^*\ll\Pr$, with $Pr^*= 0.046$. Comparison of the Prandtl--Blasius velocity boundary layer thickness with that evaluated in the direct numerical simula…
Laminar natural convection from two horizontally aligned isothermal cylinders in unconfined Power-law fluids has been investigated numerically. The effect of horizontal spacing (0<=(S/D)<=10) on both momentum and heat transfer characteristics has been delineated under the following pertinent parameters: Grashof number (10<=Gr<=1e3), Prandtl number (0.71<=n<=100), and Power-law index (0.4<=n<=1.6). The heat transfer characteristics are elucidated in terms of isotherms, local Nusselt number (Nu) distributions and average Nusselt number values, whereas the flow characteristics are interpreted in …
This work presents the application of density-based topology optimisation to the design of three-dimensional heat sinks cooled by natural convection. The governing equations are the steady-state incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled to the thermal convection-diffusion equation through the Bousinessq approximation. The fully coupled non-linear multiphysics system is solved using stabilised trilinear equal-order finite elements in a parallel framework allowing for the optimisation of large scale problems with order of 40-330 million state degrees of freedom. The flow is assumed to be la…
This study considers the linear stability of Poiseuille-Rayleigh-Bénard flows, subjected to a transverse magnetic field to understand the instabilities that arise from the complex interaction between the effects of shear, thermal stratification and magnetic damping. This fundamental study is motivated in part by the desire to enhance heat transfer in the blanket ducts of nuclear fusion reactors. In pure MHD flows, the imposed transverse magnetic field causes the flow to become quasi-2D and exhibit disturbances that are localised to the horizontal walls. However, the vertical temperature strati…
We reveal the effects of sweep on the wake dynamics around NACA 0015 wings at high angles of attack using direct numerical simulations and resolvent analysis. The influence of sweep on the wake dynamics is considered for sweep angles from $0^\circ$ to $45^\circ$ and angles of attack from $16^\circ$ to $30^\circ$ for a spanwise periodic wing at a chord-based Reynolds number of $400$ and a Mach number of $0.1$. Wing sweep affects the wake dynamics, especially in terms of stability and spanwise fluctuations with implications on the development of three-dimensional wakes. We observe that wing swee…
The asymptotic suction boundary layer (ASBL) is a parallel shear flow that becomes turbulent in a bypass transition in parameter regions where the laminar profile is stable. We here add a temperature gradient perpendicular to the plate and explore the interaction between convection and shear in determining the transition. We find that the laminar state becomes unstable in a subcritical bifurcation and that the critical Rayleigh number and wavenumber depend strongly on the Prandtl number. We also track several secondary bifurcations and identify states that are localized in two directions, show…
Thermal convection in an inclined layer between two parallel walls kept at different fixed temperatures is studied for fixed Prandtl number Pr=1.07. Depending on the angle of inclination and the imposed temperature difference, the flow exhibits a large variety of self-organized spatio-temporal convection patterns. Close to onset, these patterns have been explained in terms of linear stability analysis of primary and secondary flow states. At larger temperature difference, far beyond onset, experiments and simulations show complex, dynamically evolving patterns that are not described by stabili…
The convective heat transfer and flow behavior of graphene-water nanofluids are studied experimentally by focusing on transitional flow. Graphene-water nanofluids with different particle mass fractions (0.025, 0.1 and 0.2%) are produced following two-step method and using PVP as a surfactant. Thermo-physical characterization is performed by measuring viscosity and thermal conductivity of the nanofluids. Convection characteristics are experimentally studied from laminar to turbulent flow regimes. It is seen that pressure drop increases dramatically in the transition region, and laminar to turbu…
Laminar natural convection heat transfer from two horizontally aligned square cylinders has been investigated numerically using a finite-volume method (FVM) approach. Computations were performed to delineate the momentum and heat transfer characteristics under the following ranges of parameters: horizontal spacing between the cylinders (0 <= S/W <= 10), tilt angle of the square cylinder (0^0 <= δ <= 60^0), and Grashof number (10 <= Gr <= 10^5) for some specific Newtonian fluids having Prandtl number (0.71 <= Pr <= 7). The comprehensive results are represented in terms of temperature contours a…
We compute fully local boundary layer scales in three-dimensional turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection. These scales are directly connected to the highly intermittent fluctuations of the fluxes of momentum and heat at the isothermal top and bottom walls and are statistically distributed around the corresponding mean thickness scales. The local boundary layer scales also reflect the strong spatial inhomogeneities of both boundary layers due to the large-scale, but complex and intermittent, circulation that builds up in closed convection cells. Similar to turbulent boundary layers, we define inn…
We present highly resolved measurements of the near-wall temperature field in thermally driven convection at a rough surface. Our measurements have been undertaken in a very large experimental facility called the "Barrel of Ilmenau". They provide a unique insight into the local transport process at the interface between a hot solid surface and a surrounding fluid. In order to probe the near-wall temperature field, we used a tiny micro-thermistor of 130 $μ$m in diameter and 330 $μ$m in length with a response time $τ_{70}$ of less than 150 ms. This sensor is forty times smaller than the thicknes…
We present results on the effect of dispersed droplets in vertical natural convection (VC) using direct numerical simulations based on a two-way fully coupled Euler-Lagrange approach with a liquid phase and a dispersed droplets phase. For increasing thermal driving, characterised by the Rayleigh number, $Ra$, of the two analysed droplet volume fractions, $α= 5\times10^{-3}$ and $α= 2\times 10^{-2}$, we find non-monotonic responses to the overall heat fluxes, characterised by the Nusselt number, $Nu$. The $Nu$ number is larger when the droplets are thermally coupled to the liquid. However, $Nu$…
Vertical convection is investigated using direct numerical simulations over a wide range of Rayleigh numbers $10^7\le Ra\le10^{14}$ with fixed Prandtl number $Pr=10$, in a two-dimensional convection cell with unit aspect ratio. It is found that the dependence of the mean vertical centre temperature gradient $S$ on $Ra$ shows three different regimes: In regime I ($Ra \lesssim 5\times10^{10}$), $S$ is almost independent of $Ra$; In the newly identified regime II ($5\times10^{10} \lesssim Ra \lesssim 10^{13}$), $S$ first increases with increasing $Ra$ (regime ${\rm{II}}_a$), reaches its maximum a…
