In the above paper [Chaos, Solitons & Fractals, 13 (2002) 1843-1850] the author treats the boundary layer flow along a vertical isothermal plate of an electrically conducting fluid. The plate lies in a vertical free stream of constant velocity $u_\infty$, constant temperature $T_\infty$ and constant mass concentration $C_\infty$. The plate moves vertically with a velocity which is a linear function of distance $x$ ($u_w=cx$). A transverse magnetic field with constant strength $B_0$ is imposed on the flow. The boundary layer equations are integrated numerically. However, there is a fundamental error in this paper and the presented results do not have any practical value.
Hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic numerical studies of a mechanically forced two-vortex flow inside a sphere are reported. The simulations are performed in the intermediate regime between the laminar flow and developed turbulence where a hydrodynamic instability is found to generate internal waves with a characteristic m=2 zonal wave number. It is shown that this time-periodic flow acts as a dynamo although snapshots of the flow as well as the mean flow are not dynamos. The magnetic fields' growth rate exhibits resonance effects depending on the wave frequency. Furthermore, a cyclic self-ki…
The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) description of plasmas with relativistic particles necessarily includes an additional new field, the chiral chemical potential associated with the axial charge (i.e., the number difference between right- and left-handed relativistic fermions). This chiral chemical potential gives rise to a contribution to the electric current density of the plasma (\emph{chiral magnetic effect}). We present a self-consistent treatment of the \emph{chiral MHD equations}, which include the back-reaction of the magnetic field on a chiral chemical potential and its interaction with th…
Steady Low $R_m$ MHD turbulence is investigated here through estimates of upper bounds for attractor dimension. A flow between two parallel walls with an imposed perpendicular magnetic field is considered. The flow is defined by its maximum velocity and the intensity of the magnetic field. Given the corresponding Reynolds and Hartmann numbers, we derive an upper bound for the dimension of the attractor and find out which modes must be chosen to achieve this bound. Thier, are compared to heuristics estimates for the size of the smallest scales and anisotropy of the turbulence. We identify bound…
This study considers the linear stability of Poiseuille-Rayleigh-Bénard flows, subjected to a transverse magnetic field to understand the instabilities that arise from the complex interaction between the effects of shear, thermal stratification and magnetic damping. This fundamental study is motivated in part by the desire to enhance heat transfer in the blanket ducts of nuclear fusion reactors. In pure MHD flows, the imposed transverse magnetic field causes the flow to become quasi-2D and exhibit disturbances that are localised to the horizontal walls. However, the vertical temperature strati…
Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are performed to study the turbulent shear flow of an electrically conducting fluid in a cylindrical container. The flow is driven by the interaction between the radial electric currents ($I$) injected through a large number of small electrodes at the bottom wall and an axial magnetic field. All the numerical parameters, including the geometry of the container, the total injcected currents and the magnetic field, are in line with the experiment performed in J. Fluid Mech. 456, 137-159. First, witth laminar Hartmann layers, three dimensional simulations recove…
Using direct numerical simulations (DNS), we study laminar and turbulent dynamos in chiral magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with an extended set of equations that accounts for an additional contribution to the electric current due to the chiral magnetic effect (CME). This quantum phenomenon originates from an asymmetry between left- and right-handed relativistic fermions in the presence of a magnetic field and gives rise to a chiral dynamo. We show that the magnetic field evolution proceeds in three stages: (1) a small-scale chiral dynamo instability; (2) production of chiral magnetically driven tur…
One method and two results are contributed to the complete understanding about MHD laminar flow in annular channel with transverse magnetic field in this paper. In terms of the method, a computationally cheap semi-analytic algorithm is developed based on spectral method and perturbation expansion. By virtue of the fast computation, dense cases with almost continuous varying Hartmann number $M$, Reynolds number $Re$ and cross-section ratio $η$ are calculated to explore the flow patterns that are missed in previous research. In terms of the results of inertialess regime, we establish the average…
We investigate numerically the decay of isotropic, rotating, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD), and rotating MHD flows in a periodic box. The Reynolds number $Re$ defined with the box size and the initial velocity is $100$ at which the flows are in a weakly nonlinear regime, i.e. not laminar but far away from the fully turbulent state. The decay of isotropic flow has two stages, the first stage for the development of small scales and the second stage for the viscous dissipation. In the rapidly rotating flow, fast rotation induces the inertial wave and causes the large-scale structure to inhibit the de…
We present the first simultaneous mapping of two-dimensional, time-dependent velocity and pressure fields in a plane Couette flow pervaded by a transverse magnetic field. While electromagnetic forces are strongest in fluids of high electric conductivity such as liquid metals, their opacity excludes optical optical measurement methods. We circumvent this difficulty using a transparent electrolyte (Sulfuric acid), whose weaker conductivity is offset by higher magnetic fields. We describe an experimental rig based on this idea, where the Couette flow is entrained by a tape immersed in sulfuric ac…
This paper presents simulations of the 2d model developed by Pothérat at al (\emph{J. Fluid Mech}, 2000) for MHD flows between two planes with a strong transverse homogeneous and steady magnetic field, accounting for moderate inertial effects in Hartmann layers. We first show analytically how the additional terms in the equations of motion accounting for inertia, soften velocity gradients in the horizontal plane, and then we implement the model on a code to carry out numerical simulations to be compared with available experimental results. This comparison shows that the new model can give very…
