One method and two results are contributed to the complete understanding about MHD laminar flow in annular channel with transverse magnetic field in this paper. In terms of the method, a computationally cheap semi-analytic algorithm is developed based on spectral method and perturbation expansion. By virtue of the fast computation, dense cases with almost continuous varying Hartmann number $M$, Reynolds number $Re$ and cross-section ratio $η$ are calculated to explore the flow patterns that are missed in previous research. In terms of the results of inertialess regime, we establish the average velocity map and electric-flow coupling delimitation in $η$-$M$ space. Seven phenomenological flow patterns and their analytical approaches are identified. In terms of the results of inertial regime, we examine the law of decreasing order-of-magnitude of inertial perturbation on primary flow with increasing Hartmann number. The proposed semi-analytic solution coincides with the $Re^2/M^{4}$ suppression theory of Baylis & Hunt (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 43, 1971, pp. 423-428) in the case of $M<40$. When $M>40$, the pair of trapezoid vortices of secondary flow begins to crack and there is therefore a faster drop in inertial perturbation as $Re^2/M^{5}$, which is a new suppression theory. When $M>80$, the anomalous reverse vortices are fully developed near Shercliff layers resulting in the slower suppression mode of $Re^2/M^{2.5}$, which confirms the prediction of Tabeling & Chabrerie (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 103, 1981, pp. 225-239).
In a previous paper, we have reported numerical simulations of the MHD flow driven by a travelling magnetic field (TMF) in an annular channel, at low Reynolds number. It was shown that the stalling of such induction pump is strongly related to magnetic flux expulsion. In the present article, we show that for larger hydrodynamic Reynolds number, and with more realistic boundary conditions, this instability takes the form of a large axisymmetric vortex flow in the (r,z)-plane, in which the fluid is locally pumped in the direction opposite to the one of the magnetic field. Close to the marginal s…
Annular Couette flow is the flow between two coaxial cylinders driven by the axial translation of the inner cylinder. It is investigated using direct numerical simulation in long domains, with an emphasis on the laminar-turbulent coexistence regime found for marginally low values of the Reynolds number. Three distinct flow regimes are demonstrated as the radius ratio $η$ is decreased from 0.8 to 0.5 and finally to 0.1. The high-$η$ regime features helically-shaped turbulent patches coexisting with laminar flow, as in planar shear flows. The moderate-$η$ regime does not feature any marked lamin…
From Sheared Annular Centrifugal Rayleigh-Bénard Convection to Radially Heated Taylor-Couette Flow: Exploring the Impact of Buoyancy and Shear on Heat Transfer and Flow Structure
In this paper it is shown that the location of the characteristic overshoot of the Richardson's annular effect changes with the Kinematic Reynolds number $ω^*=ωr_0^2 /ν$ in the range of frequencies within the laminar regime. From the study of the Richardson's overshoot at different times it was identified the existence of aparent transverse damped waves similar to those ones observed in the famous Stokes second problem, the physical analysis of this waves was used for the establishment of a semi-empirical law that gives the functional relation of the mean overshoot maximum with the kinematic r…
Phase-field methods have long been used to model the flow of immiscible fluids. Their ability to naturally capture interface topological changes is widely recognized, but their accuracy in simulating flows of real fluids in practical geometries is not established. We here quantitatively investigate the convergence of the phase-field method to the sharp-interface limit with simulations of two-phase pipe flow. We focus on core-annular flows, in which a highly viscous fluid is lubricated by a less viscous fluid, and validate our simulations with an analytic laminar solution, a formal linear stabi…
The MHD flow driven by a travelling magnetic field (TMF) in an annular channel is investigated numerically. For sufficiently large magnetic Reynolds number Rm, or if a large enough pressure gradient is externally applied, the system undergoes an instability in which the flow rate in the channel dramatically drops from synchronism with the wave to much smaller velocities. This transition takes the form of a saddle-node bifurcation for the time-averaged quantities. In this first paper, we characterize the bifurcation, and study the stability of the flow as a function of several parameters. We sh…
We present numerical simulations and explore scalings and anisotropy of compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. Our study covers both gas pressure dominated (high beta) and magnetically dominated (low beta) plasmas at different Mach numbers. In addition, we present results for superAlfvenic turbulence and discuss in what way it is similar to the subAlfvenic turbulence. We describe a technique of separating different magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes (slow, fast and Alfven) and apply it to our simulations. We show that, for both high and low beta cases, Alfven and slow modes reveal the…
We perform direct numerical simulations of a kerosene-water mixture in pipe flow under realistic experimental conditions by solving the Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes equations. We compute the linear stability of core-annular flow of kerosene and water in a vertical pipe and find that it is highly unstable. By performing DNS initialized with a slightly perturbed core-annular flow, we show that the system transitions to turbulence and finally relaxes into a turbulent slug flow regime provided that the pipe is sufficiently long. This configuration presents mild turbulence and large scale three-dime…
We investigate the propagation of MHD fast waves into a cylindrical coronal loop through an inhomogeneous stationary flow region. The background flow is assumed to have a small, spatially periodic structure in addition to a constant speed. We focus on the absorption of the wave energy in Alfvén resonance, comparing with the constant flow case. A new flow (absorption) regime is induced by the periodic flow structure which enhances the absorption for the antiparallel flow and inverse absorption (overreflection) for the parallel flow with respect to the axial wave vector, depending on the transit…
We study experimentally the interfacial instability between a layer of dilute polymer solution and water flowing in a thin capillary. The use of microfluidic devices allows us to observe and quantify in great detail the features of the flow. At low velocities, the flow takes the form of a straight jet, while at high velocities, steady or advected wavy jets are produced. We demonstrate that the transition between these flow regimes is purely elastic -- it is caused by viscoelasticity of the polymer solution only. The linear stability analysis of the flow in the short-wave approximation captures…
We revisit the scaling properties of the energy spectra in fully developed incompressible homogeneous turbulence in forced magnetofluids (MHD) in three dimensions (3D), which are believed to be characterised by {\em universal scaling exponents} in the inertial range. Enumerating these universal scaling exponents that characterise the energy spectra remains a theoretical challenge. To study this, we set up a scaling analysis of the 3D MHD equations, driven by large-scale external forces and with or without a mean magnetic field. We use scaling arguments to bring out various scaling regimes for …
Astrophysical plasmas are often subject to both rotation and large-scale background magnetic fields. Individually, each is known to two-dimensionalize the flow in the perpendicular plane. In realistic flows, both of these effects are simultaneously present and, importantly, need not be aligned. In this work, we numerically investigate three-dimensional forced magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence subject to the competing effects of global rotation and a perpendicular background magnetic field. We focus on the case of a strong background field and find that increasing the rotation rate from zero…
A parametric study of the magnetic dipole behavior in resistive incompressible MHD inside a rotating sphere is performed, using direct numerical simulations and considering Reynolds and Ekman numbers as controlling parameters. The tendency is to obtain geodynamo-like magnetic dipole reversal regimes for sufficiently small Ekman and large Reynolds numbers. The typical dipole latitude obtained in the reversal regime is around 40 degrees (with respect to the rotation axis of the sphere). A statistical analysis of waiting times between dipole reversals is also performed, obtaining a non-Poissonian…

The present work focuses on the study of mixed convection of a purely viscous shear-thinning fluid in a horizontal annular eccentric duct. The inner and outer cylinders are heated with constant and uniform heat flux densities. The objective of this work is to study the effect of the variation of eccentricity, rheological behavior of the fluid as well as the thermodependency of the rheological parameters on the reorganization of the flow and thermal stratification caused by the buoyancy forces. At the entrance of the heating zone, the dynamic regime is assumed to be established and the temperat…
We investigate numerically the decay of isotropic, rotating, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD), and rotating MHD flows in a periodic box. The Reynolds number $Re$ defined with the box size and the initial velocity is $100$ at which the flows are in a weakly nonlinear regime, i.e. not laminar but far away from the fully turbulent state. The decay of isotropic flow has two stages, the first stage for the development of small scales and the second stage for the viscous dissipation. In the rapidly rotating flow, fast rotation induces the inertial wave and causes the large-scale structure to inhibit the de…
We develop an improved lattice-Boltzmann numerical scheme to solve magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations in the regime of low magnetic Reynolds numbers, grounded on a manifestly Galilean covariant modeling of the Navier-Stokes equations. The simulation of the magnetic induction equation within the lattice-Boltzmann approach to MHD has been usually devised along the lines of the simplest phenomenological description, the single relaxation time (SRT) model. In order to deal with well-known stability difficulties of the SRT framework, we introduce, alternatively, a multi-relaxation-time technique f…
We build on recent developments in the study of fluid turbulence [Gibbon \textit{et al.} Nonlinearity 27, 2605 (2014)] to define suitably scaled, order-$m$ moments, $D_m^{\pm}$, of $ω^\pm= ω\pm j$, where $ω$ and $j$ are, respectively, the vorticity and current density in three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). We show by mathematical analysis, for unit magnetic Prandtl number $P_M$, how these moments can be used to identify three possible regimes for solutions of the MHD equations; these regimes are specified by inequalities for $D_m^{\pm}$ and $D_1^{\pm}$. We then compare our mathematic…
