We study the average $2$-torsion in the class group of monogenised fields of odd degree. Bhargava--Hanke--Shankar have recently shown that for a fixed signature, the average number of non-trivial $2$-torsion elements in the class group of monogenised cubic fields is exactly twice the value predicted by the Cohen--Lenstra--Martinet--Malle heuristic over the full $S_3$ family. For any odd degree $n \ge 3$ and signature, we prove that the average number of non-trivial $2$-torsion elements in the class group of monogenised fields is at most twice the value predicted by the Cohen--Lenstra--Martinet--Malle heuristic over the full $S_n$ family. Conditional on a tail estimate for $n \ge 5$, this establishes that the doubling phenomenon discovered by Bhargava--Hanke--Shankar persists across all odd degrees and signatures.
We prove that, on average, the monogenicity or $n$-monogenicity of a cubic field has an altering effect on the behavior of the 2-torsion in its class group.
Let $K$ be a non-cylotomic imaginary quadratic field of class number 1 and $E/K$ is an elliptic curve with $E(K)[2]\simeq \mathbb{Z}_1.$ We determine the odd-order torsion groups that can arise as $E(L)_{\text{tor}}$ where $L$ is a quadratic extension of $K.$
Let $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$ or $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-1})$ and let $C_n$ denote the cyclic group of order $n$. We study how the torsion part of an elliptic curve over $K$ grows in a quadratic extension of $K$. In the case $E(K)[2] \approx C_1$ we investigate how a given torsion structure can grow in a quadratic extension and the maximum number of extensions in which it grows. We also study the torsion structures which occur as the quadratic twist of a given torsion structure. In order to achieve this we examine $N$-isogenies defined over $K$ for $N=15,20,21,24,27,30,35$.
We consider the generalised Jacobian $J_{0}(N)_{\mathbf{m}}$ of the modular curve $X_{0}(N)$ of level $N$, with respect to the modulus $\mathbf{m}$ consisting of all cusps on the modular curve. When $N$ is odd, we determine the group structure of the rational torsion $J_{0}(N)_{\mathbf{m}}(\mathbb{Q})_{tor}$ up to $2$-primary and $l$-primary parts for any prime $l$ dividing $N$. Our results extend those of Wei--Yamazaki for squarefree levels and Yamazaki--Yang for prime-power levels.
Let $\mathscr{G}_{\rm CM}(d)$ denote the collection of groups (up to isomorphism) that appear as the torsion subgroup of a CM elliptic curve over a degree $d$ number field. We completely determine $\mathscr{G}_{\rm CM}(d)$ for odd integers $d$ and deduce a number of statistical theorems about the behavior of torsion subgroups of CM elliptic curves. Here are three examples: (1) For each odd $d$, the set of natural numbers $d'$ with $\mathscr{G}_{\rm CM}(d') = \mathscr{G}_{\rm CM}(d)$ possesses a well-defined, positive asymptotic density. (2) Let $T_{\rm CM}(d) = \max_{G \in \mathscr{G}_{\rm CM}…
We give a classification of the cuspidal automorphic representations attached to rational elliptic curves with a non-trivial torsion point of odd order. Such elliptic curves are parameterizable, and in this paper, we find the necessary and sufficient conditions on the parameters to determine when split or non-split multiplicative reduction occurs. Using this and the known results on when additive reduction occurs for these parametrized curves, we classify the automorphic representations in terms of the parameters.
We use recent advances in the local evaluation of Brauer elements to study the role played by {\it odd} torsion elements of the Brauer group in the arithmetic of diagonal quartic surfaces over {\it arbitrary} number fields. We show that over a local field if the order of the Brauer element is odd and coprime to the residue characteristic then the evaluation map it induces on the local points is constant. Over number fields we give a sufficient condition on the coefficients of the equation, which is mild and easy to check, so that the odd torsion does not obstruct weak approximation. We also no…
We determine the odd order torsion subgroup of the Brauer group of diagonal quartic surfaces over the field of rational numbers. We show that a non-constant Brauer element of odd order always obstructs weak approximation but never the Hasse principle.
For nonzero rational D, which may be taken to be a squarefree integer, let E_D be the elliptic curve Dy^2=x^3-x over Q arising in the "congruent number" problem. It is known that the L-function of E_D has sign -1, and thus odd analytic rank, if and only if |D| is congruent to 5, 6, or 7 mod 8. For such D, we expect by the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer that the arithmetic rank of each of these curves E_D is odd, and therefore positive. We prove that E_D has positive rank for each D such that |D| is in one of the above congruence classes mod 8 and also satisfies |D|<10^6. Our proof is …
For every odd integer $n \geq 3$, we prove that there exist infinitely many number fields of degree $n$ and associated Galois group $S_n$ whose class number is odd. To do so, we study the class groups of families of number fields of degree $n$ whose rings of integers arise as the coordinate rings of the subschemes of $\mathbb{P}^1$ cut out by integral binary $n$-ic forms. By obtaining upper bounds on the mean number of $2$-torsion elements in the class groups of fields in these families, we prove that a positive proportion (tending to $1$ as $n$ tends to $\infty$) of such fields have trivial $…
Let $D$ be an odd square-free positive integer and $C$ a divisor of $D$. For any quadratic character $χ$ modulo $C$, we prove that the $χ$-part of the group $J_0(DC)_\text{tor}$ of torsion points of $J_0(DC)$ coincides with the $χ$-part of its cuspidal subgroup, away from those primes of bad reduction or where possible congruences between oldforms and newforms occur.
Fisher and Newton have given an explicit description of the Tate local pairing associated with the 3-torsion of an elliptic curve. The present paper summarizes the work from the author's master's thesis and gives an explicit formula for any odd prime $p$, thereby extending the work of Fisher and Newton.
In 1801, Gauss proved that there were infinitely many quadratic fields with odd class number. We generalise this result by showing that there are infinitely many $S_n$-fields of any given even degree and signature that have odd class number. Also, we prove that there are infinitely many fields of any even degree at least $4$ and with at least one real embedding that have units of every signature. To do so, we bound the average number of $2$-torsion elements in the class group, narrow class group, and oriented class group of monogenised fields of even degree (and compute these averages precisel…
By reformulating and extending results of Elkies, we prove some results on $\mathbb Q$-curves over number fields of odd degree. We show that, over such fields, the only prime isogeny degrees~$\ell$ which an elliptic curve without CM may have are those degrees which are already possible over~$\mathbb Q$ itself (in particular, $\ell\le37$), and we show the existence of a bound on the degrees of cyclic isogenies between $\mathbb Q$-curves depending only on the degree of the field. We also prove that the only possible torsion groups of $\mathbb Q$-curves over number fields of degree not divisible …
We study torsion subgroups of elliptic curves with complex multiplication (CM) defined over number fields which admit a real embedding. We give a complete classification of the groups which arise up to isomorphism as the torsion subgroup of a CM elliptic curve defined over a number field of odd degree: there are infinitely many. Restricting to the case of prime degree, we show that there are only finitely many isomorphism classes. More precisely, there are six "Olson groups" which arise as torsion subgroups of CM elliptic curves over number fields of every degree, and there are precisely 17 "n…
Let $p$ be a prime number and let $k$ be a number field. Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $k$. We prove that if $p$ is odd, then the local-global divisibility by any power of $p$ holds for the torsion points of $E$. We also show with an example that the hypothesis over $p$ is necessary. We get a weak generalization of the result on elliptic curves to the larger family of ${\rm GL}_2$-type varieties over $k$. In the special case of the abelian surfaces $A/k$ with quaternionic multiplication over $k$ we obtain that for all prime $p$, except a finite number depending on $A$, the local-gl…
In this paper, we will study modular Abelian varieties with odd congruence numbers by examining the cuspidal subgroup of $J_0(N)$. We will show that the conductor of such Abelian varieties must be of a special type. For example, if $N$ is the conductor of an absolutely simple modular Abelian variety with an odd congruence number, then $N$ has at most two prime divisors, and if $N$ is odd, then $N=p^α$ or $N=pq$ for some prime $p$ and $q$. In the second half of this paper, we will focus on modular elliptic curves with odd modular degree. Our results, combined with the work of Agashe, Ribet, and…
Cais, Ellenberg and Zureick-Brown recently observed that over finite fields of characteristic two, all sufficiently general smooth plane projective curves of a given odd degree admit a non-trivial rational 2-torsion point on their Jacobian. We extend their observation to curves given by Laurent polynomials with a fixed Newton polygon, provided that the polygon satisfies a certain combinatorial property. We also show that in each of these cases, the sufficiently general condition is implied by being ordinary. Our treatment includes many classical families, such as hyperelliptic curves of odd ge…
Let A be an abelian variety defined over a number field K, the number of torsion points rational over a finite extension L is bounded polynomially in terms of the degree [L : K]. When A is isogenous to a product of simple abelian varieties of type I or II in Albert classification and is "fully of Lefschetz type", i.e. whose Mumford-Tate group is the group of symplectic similitudes commuting with endomorphisms and which satisfy the Mumford-Tate conjecture, we compute the optimal exponent for this bound in terms of the dimensions of the abelian subvarieties of A and their rings of endomorphisms.…
We show that, for all odd natural numbers $N$, the $N$-torsion points on an elliptic curve may be placed in an $N \times N$ grid such that the sum of each column and each row is the point at infinity.
Given a principally polarized abelian variety $A$ of dimension $g$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p$, the $p$ torsion $A[p]$ is a finite flat $p$-torsion group scheme of rank $p^{2g}$. There are exactly $2^g$ possible group schemes that can occur as some such $A[p]$. In this paper, we study which group schemes can occur as $J[p]$, where $J$ is the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{F}_p$. We do this by computing explicit formulae for the action of Frobenius and its dual on the de Rham cohomology of a hyperelliptic curve with respect to a given ba…
Let $E$ be an optimal elliptic curve over $\Q$ of prime conductor $N$. We show that if for an odd prime $p$, the mod $p$ representation associated to $E$ is reducible (in particular, if $p$ divides the order of the torsion subgroup of $E(\Q)$), then the $p$-primary component of the Shafarevich-Tate group of $E$ is trivial. We also state a related result for more general abelian subvarieties of $J_0(N)$ and mention what to expect if $N$ is not prime.
For d=2n+1 a positive odd integer, we consider sequences of arithmetic subgroups of SO_0(d,1) and Spin(d,1) yielding corresponding hyperbolic manifolds of finite volume and show that, under appropriate and natural assumptions, the torsion of the associated cohomology groups grows exponentially.
Let p be an odd prime, K a finite extension of Q_p, G=Gal(\bar K/K) the Galois group and e=e(K/Q_p) the ramification index. Suppose T is a p^n torsion representation such that T is isomorphic to a quotient of two G-stable Z_p-lattices in a semi-stable representation with Hodge-Tate weights in {0,...,r}. We prove that there exists a constant μexplicitly depending on n, e and r such that the upper numbering ramification group G^{(μ)} acts on T trivially.
We show that odd order transcendental elements of the Brauer group of a K3 surface can obstruct the Hasse principle. We exhibit a general K3 surface $Y$ of degree 2 over $\mathbb{Q}$ together with a three torsion Brauer class $α$ that is unramified at all primes except for 3, but ramifies at all 3-adic points of $Y$. Motivated by Hodge theory, the pair $(Y, α)$ is constructed from a cubic fourfold $X$ of discriminant 18 birational to a fibration into sextic del Pezzo surfaces over the projective plane. Notably, our construction does not rely on the presence of a central simple algebra represen…
