We investigate the behaviour of elliptic Feynman integrals under modular transformations. This has a practical motivation: Through a suitable modular transformation we can achieve that the nome squared is a small quantity, leading to fast numerical evaluations. Contrary to the case of multiple polylogarithms, where it is sufficient to consider just variable transformations for the numerical evaluations of multiple polylogarithms, it is more natural in the elliptic case to consider a combination of a variable transformation (i.e. a modular transformation) together with a redefinition of the master integrals. Thus we combine a coordinate transformation on the base manifold with a basis transformation in the fibre. Only in the combination of the two transformations we stay within the same class of functions.
In this talk we discuss a class of Feynman integrals, which can be expressed to all orders in the dimensional regularisation parameter as iterated integrals of modular forms. We review the mathematical prerequisites related to elliptic curves and modular forms. Feynman integrals, which evaluate to iterated integrals of modular forms go beyond the class of multiple polylogarithms. Nevertheless, we may bring for all examples considered the associated system of differential equations by a non-algebraic transformation to an $\varepsilon$-form, which makes a solution in terms of iterated integrals …
We study a two-loop four-point function with one internal mass. This Feynman integral is one of the simplest Feynman integrals depending on two elliptic curves. We transform the associated differential equation into an $\varepsilon$-form. We study the entries of the differential equation, and in particular the entries which depend on both elliptic curves.
This talk reviews Feynman integrals, which are associated to elliptic curves. The talk will give an introduction into the mathematics behind them, covering the topics of elliptic curves, elliptic integrals, modular forms and the moduli space of $n$ marked points on a genus one curve. The latter will be important, as elliptic Feynman integrals can be expressed as iterated integrals on the moduli space ${\mathcal M}_{1,n}$, in same way as Feynman integrals which evaluate to multiple polylogarithms can be expressed as iterated integrals on the moduli space ${\mathcal M}_{0,n}$. With the right lan…
In this paper we study the calculation of multiloop Feynman integrals that cannot be expressed in terms of multiple polylogarithms. We show in detail how certain types of two- and three-point functions at two loops, which appear in the calculation of higher order corrections in QED, QCD and in the electroweak theory (EW), can naturally be expressed in terms of a recently introduced elliptic generalisation of multiple polylogarithms by direct integration over their Feynman parameter representation. Moreover, we show that in all examples that we considered a basis of pure Feynman integrals can b…
The $\varepsilon$-form of a system of differential equations for Feynman integrals has led to tremendeous progress in our abilities to compute Feynman integrals, as long as they fall into the class of multiple polylogarithms. It is therefore of current interest, if these methods extend beyond the case of multiple polylogarithms. In this talk I discuss Feynman integrals, which are associated to elliptic curves and their differential equations. I show for non-trivial examples how the system of differential equations can be brought into an $\varepsilon$-form. Single-scale and multi-scale cases ar…
Feynman integrals are easily solved if their system of differential equations is in $\varepsilon$-form. In this letter we show by the explicit example of the kite integral family that an $\varepsilon$-form can even be achieved, if the Feynman integrals do not evaluate to multiple polylogarithms. The $\varepsilon$-form is obtained by a (non-algebraic) change of basis for the master integrals.
In this talk we discuss Feynman integrals which are related to elliptic curves. We show with the help of an explicit example that in the set of master integrals more than one elliptic curve may occur. The technique of maximal cuts is a useful tool to identify the elliptic curves. By a suitable transformation of the master integrals the system of differential equations for our example can be brought into a form linear in $\varepsilon$, where the $\varepsilon^0$-term is strictly lower-triangular. This system is easily solved in terms of iterated integrals.
In these proceedings we discuss a representation for modular forms that is more suitable for their application to the calculation of Feynman integrals in the context of iterated integrals and the differential equation method. In particular, we show that for every modular form we can find a representation in terms of powers of complete elliptic integrals of the first kind multiplied by algebraic functions. We illustrate this result on several examples. In particular, we show how to explicitly rewrite elliptic multiple zeta values as iterated integrals over powers of complete elliptic integrals …
We review certain classes of iterated integrals that appear in the computation of Feynman integrals that involve elliptic functions. These functions generalise the well-known class of multiple polylogarithms to elliptic curves and are closely related to the elliptic multiple polylogarithms (eMPLs) studied in the mathematics literature. When evaluated at certain special values of the arguments, eMPLs reduce to another class of special functions, defined as iterated integrals of Eisenstein series. As a novel application of our formalism, we illustrate how a class of special functions introduced …
In this paper we show that certain Feynman integrals can be expressed as linear combinations of iterated integrals of modular forms to all orders in the dimensional regularisation parameter $\varepsilon$ . We discuss explicitly the equal mass sunrise integral and the kite integral. For both cases we give the alphabet of letters occurring in the iterated integrals. For the sunrise integral we present a compact formula, expressing this integral to all orders in $\varepsilon$ as iterated integrals of modular forms.
In this paper we develop and demonstrate a method to obtain epsilon factorized differential equations for elliptic Feynman integrals. This method works by choosing an integral basis with the property that the period matrix obtained by integrating the basis over a complete set of integration cycles is diagonal. The method is a generalization of a similar method known to work for polylogarithmic Feynman integrals. We demonstrate the method explicitly for a number of Feynman integral families with an elliptic highest sector.
We propose a variant of elliptic multiple polylogarithms that have at most logarithmic singularities in all variables and satisfy a differential equation without homogeneous term. We investigate several non-trivial elliptic two-loop Feynman integrals with up to three external legs and express them in terms of our functions. We observe that in all cases they evaluate to pure combinations of elliptic multiple polylogarithms of uniform weight. This is the first time that a notion of uniform weight is observed in the context of Feynman integrals that evaluate to elliptic polylogarithms.
We introduce a type of graph integrals on elliptic curves from the heat kernel. We show that such graph integrals have modular properties under the modular group $SL(2, \Z)$, and prove the polynomial nature of the anti-holomorphic dependence.
In this talk we discuss the interplay of two elliptic curves, which occur in different sub-sectors of Feynman integrals. We analyse a particular Feynman integral depending on two elliptic curves and derive an associated differential equation in $\varepsilon$-form. We discuss the mixed entries of the differential equation, which depend on both elliptic curves.
We report on an implementation within GiNaC to evaluate iterated integrals related to elliptic Feynman integrals numerically to arbitrary precision within the region of convergence of the series expansion of the integrand. The implementation includes iterated integrals of modular forms as well as iterated integrals involving the Kronecker coefficient functions $g^{(k)}(z,τ)$. For the Kronecker coefficient functions iterated integrals in $dτ$ and $dz$ are implemented. This includes elliptic multiple polylogarithms.
We present an alternative technique for evaluating multiloop Feynman diagrams, using the integration by fractional expansion method. Here we consider generic diagrams that contain propagators with radiative corrections which topologically correspond to recursive constructions of bubble type diagrams. The main idea is to reduce these subgraphs, replacing them by their equivalent multiregion expansion. One of the main advantages of this integration technique is that it allows to reduce massive cases with the same degree of difficulty as in the massless case.
A modular application of the integration by fractional expansion (IBFE) method for evaluating Feynman diagrams is extended to diagrams that contain loop triangle subdiagrams in their geometry. The technique is based in the replacement of this module or subdiagram by its corresponding multiregion expansion (MRE), which in turn is obtained from Schwinger's parametric representation of the diagram. The result is a topological reduction, transforming the triangular loop into an equivalent vertex, which simplifies the search for the MRE of the complete diagram. This procedure has important advantag…
We introduce and study the notion of a dual Feynman transform of a modular operad. This generalizes and gives a conceptual explanation of Kontsevich's dual construction producing graph cohomology classes from a contractible differential graded Frobenius algebra. The dual Feynman transform of a modular operad is indeed linear dual to the Feynman transform introduced by Getzler and Kapranov when evaluated on vacuum graphs. In marked contrast to the Feynman transform, the dual notion admits an extremely simple presentation via generators and relations; this leads to an explicit and easy descripti…
The coefficients of the higher-derivative terms in the low energy expansion of genus-one graviton Type II superstring scattering amplitudes are determined by integrating sums of non-holomorphic modular functions over the complex structure modulus of a torus. In the case of the four-graviton amplitude, each of these modular functions is a multiple sum associated with a Feynman diagram for a free massless scalar field on the torus. The lines in each diagram join pairs of vertex insertion points and the number of lines defines its weight $w$, which corresponds to its order in the low energy expan…
We present a loop-by-loop method for computing the differential equations of Feynman integrals using the recently developed dual form formalism. We give explicit prescriptions for the loop-by-loop fibration of multi-loop dual forms. Then, we test our formalism on a simple, but non-trivial, example: the two-loop three-mass elliptic sunrise family of integrals. We obtain an epsilon-form differential equation within the correct function space in a sequence of relatively simple algebraic steps. In particular, none of these steps relies on the analysis of $q$-series. Then, we discuss interesting pr…
In this talk, we discuss recent progress in the application of generalizations of polylogarithms in the symbolic computation of multi-loop integrals. We briefly review the Maple program MPL which supports a certain approach for the computation of Feynman integrals in terms of multiple polylogarithms. Furthermore we discuss elliptic generalizations of polylogarithms which have shown to be useful in the computation of the massive two-loop sunrise integral.
We obtain eigenvalue equations satisfied by various elliptic modular graphs with five links where two of the vertices are unintegrated. Solving them leads to several non--trivial algebraic identities between these graphs.
Reduze is a computer program for reducing Feynman integrals to master integrals employing a variant of Laporta's reduction algorithm. This article describes version 2 of the program. New features include the distributed reduction of single topologies on multiple processor cores. The parallel reduction of different topologies is supported via a modular, load balancing job system. Fast graph and matroid based algorithms allow for the identification of equivalent topologies and integrals.
Using contour deformations and integrations over modular forms, we compute certain Bessel moments arising from diagrammatic expansions in two-dimensional quantum field theory. We evaluate these Feynman integrals as either explicit constants or critical values of modular $L$-series, and verify several recent conjectures of Broadhurst.
We obtain Poisson equations satisfied by elliptic modular graph functions with four links. Analysis of these equations leads to a non--trivial algebraic relation between the various graphs.

We study the limit of Calabi-Yau modular forms, and in particular, those resulting in classical modular forms. We then study two parameter families of elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau fourfolds and describe the modular forms arising from the degeneracy loci. In the case of elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau threefolds our approach gives a mathematical proof of many observations about modularity properties of topological string amplitudes starting with the work of Candelas, Font, Katz and Morrison. In the case of Calabi-Yau fourfolds we derive new identities not computed before.
We study the refined topological string partition function of a class of toric elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds. These Calabi-Yau threefolds give rise to five dimensional quiver gauge theories and are dual to configurations of M5-M2-branes. We determine the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants for these threefolds and show that the genus $g$ free energy is given by the weight $2g$ Eisenstein series. We also show that although the free energy at all genera are modular invariant the full partition function satisfies the non-perturbative modular transformation property discussed by Lockhart and Va…
The theory of Topological Modular Forms suggests the existence of deformation invariants for two-dimensional supersymmetric field theories that are more refined than the standard elliptic genus. In this note we give a physical definition of some of these invariants. The theory of mock modular forms makes a surprise appearance, shedding light on the integrality properties of some well-known examples.
We analyze various perspectives on the elliptic genus of non-compact supersymmetric coset conformal field theories with central charge larger than three. We calculate the holomorphic part of the elliptic genus via a free field description of the model, and show that it agrees with algebraic expectations. The holomorphic part of the elliptic genus is directly related to an Appell-Lerch sum and behaves anomalously under modular transformation properties. We analyze the origin of the anomaly by calculating the elliptic genus through a path integral in a coset conformal field theory. The path inte…
Modular operads are a special type of operad: in fact, they bear the same relationship to operads that graphs do to trees (i.e. simply connected graphs). One of the basic examples of a modular operad is the collection of Deligne-Mumford-Knudsen moduli spaces $\bar{M}_{g,n}$ of stable pointed algebraic curves; hence the word ``modular.'' In this paper, we introduce various constructions on differential graded modular operads, notably a duality which we call the Feynman transform, which extends Kontsevich's graph complexes. Our main result is the calculation of the Euler characteristic of the Fe…
The modular bootstrap program for 2d CFTs could be seen as a systematic exploration of the physical consequences of consistency conditions at the elliptic points and at the cusp of their toruspartition function. The study at $τ=i$, the elliptic point stabilized by the modular inversion $S$, was initiated by Hellerman, who found a general upper bound for the most relevant scaling dimension $Δ$. Likewise, analyticity at $τ=i\infty$, the cusp stabilized by the modular translation $T$, yields an upper bound on the twist gap. Here we study consistency conditions at $τ=\exp[2iπ/3]$, the elliptic poi…
We study the geometry and Hodge theory of the cubic hypersurfaces attached to two-loop Feynman integrals for generic physical parameters. We show that the Hodge structure attached to planar two-loop Feynman graphs decomposes into mixed Tate pieces and the Hodge structures of families of hyperelliptic, elliptic, or rational curves depending on the space-time dimension. For two-loop graphs with a small number of edges, we give more precise results. In particular, we recover a result of Bloch arXiv:2105.06132 that in the well-known double box example, there is an underlying family of elliptic cur…
We consider certain elliptic modular graph functions that arise in the asymptotic expansion around the non--separating node of genus two string invariants that appear in the integrand of the $D^8 R^4$ interaction in the low momentum expansion of the four graviton amplitude in type II superstring theory. These elliptic modular graphs have links given by the Green function, as well its holomorphic and anti--holomorphic derivatives. Using appropriate auxiliary graphs at various intermediate stages of the analysis, we show that each graph can be expressed solely in terms of graphs with links given…
We study the sunset Feynman integral defined as the scalar two-point self-energy at two-loop order in a two dimensional space-time. We firstly compute the Feynman integral, for arbitrary internal masses, in terms of the regulator of a class in the motivic cohomology of a 1-parameter family of open elliptic curves. Using an Hodge theoretic (B-model) approach, we show that the integral is given by a sum of elliptic dilogarithms evaluated at the divisors determined by the punctures. Secondly we associate to the sunset elliptic curve a local non-compact Calabi-Yau 3-fold, obtained as a limit of el…
It is known that the L-function of an elliptic curve defined over Q is given by the Mellin transform of a modular form of weight 2. Does that modular form have anything to do with string theory? In this article, we address a question along this line for elliptic curves that have complex multiplication defined over number fields. So long as we use diagonal rational N=(2,2) superconformal field theories for the string-theory realizations of the elliptic curves, the weight-2 modular form turns out to be the Boltzmann-weighted (q^{L_0-c/24}-weighted) sum of U(1) charges with F e^{ πi F} insertion …
In the paper we study two types of relations: a one is between the elliptic genus of Calabi-Yau manifolds and Jacobi modular forms, another one is between the second quantized elliptic genus, Siegel modular forms and Lorentzian Kac-Moody Lie algebras. We also determine the structure of the graded ring of the weak Jacobi forms with integral Fourier coefficients. It gives us a number of applications to the theory of elliptic genus and of the second quantized elliptic genus.
Integrable N-particle systems have an important property that the associated Seiberg-Witten prepotentials satisfy the WDVV equations. However, this does not apply to the most interesting class of elliptic and double-elliptic systems. Studying the commutativity conjecture for theta-functions on the families of associated spectral curves, we derive some other non-linear equations for the perturbative Seiberg-Witten prepotential, which turn out to have exactly the double-elliptic system as their generic solution. In contrast with the WDVV equations, the new equations acquire non-perturbative corr…
We calculate 3-loop master integrals for heavy quark correlators and the 3-loop QCD corrections to the $ρ$-parameter. They obey non-factorizing differential equations of second order with more than three singularities, which cannot be factorized in Mellin-$N$ space either. The solution of the homogeneous equations is possible in terms of convergent close integer power series as $_2F_1$ Gauß hypergeometric functions at rational argument. In some cases, integrals of this type can be mapped to complete elliptic integrals at rational argument. This class of functions appears to be the next one ari…
Elliptic modular graph forms (eMGFs) are non-holomorphic modular forms depending on a modular parameter $τ$ of a torus and marked points $z$ thereon. Traditionally, eMGFs are constructed from nested lattice sums over the discrete momenta on the worldsheet torus in closed-string genus-one amplitudes. In this work, we develop methods to translate the lattice-sum realization of eMGFs into iterated integrals over modular parameters $τ$ of the torus with particular focus on cases with one marked point. Such iterated-integral representations manifest algebraic and differential relations among eMGFs …
We study the analytic continuation of Feynman integrals from the kite family, expressed in terms of elliptic generalisations of (multiple) polylogarithms. Expressed in this way, the Feynman integrals are functions of two periods of an elliptic curve. We show that all what is required is just the analytic continuation of these two periods. We present an explicit formula for the two periods for all values of $t \in {\mathbb R}$. Furthermore, the nome $q$ of the elliptic curve satisfies over the complete range in $t$ the inequality $|q|\le 1$, where $|q|=1$ is attained only at the singular points…
We investigate the interplay between the enumerative geometry of Calabi-Yau fourfolds with fluxes and the modularity of elliptic genera in four-dimensional string theories. We argue that certain contributions to the elliptic genus are given by derivatives of modular or quasi-modular forms, which encode BPS invariants of Calabi-Yau or non-Calabi-Yau threefolds that are embedded in the given fourfold. As a result, the elliptic genus is only a quasi-Jacobi form, rather than a modular or quasi-modular one in the usual sense. This manifests itself as a holomorphic anomaly of the spectral flow symme…
When we describe string propagation on non-compact or singular Calabi-Yau manifolds by CFT, continuous as well as discrete representations appear in the theory. These representations mix in an intricate way under the modular transformations. In this article, we propose a method of combining discrete and continuous representations so that the resulting combinations have a simpler modular behavior and can be used as conformal blocks of the theory. We compute elliptic genera of ALE spaces and obtain results which agree with those suggested from the decompactification of K3 surface. Consistency of…

We study the Coulomb branches of the rank-one 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ quantum field theories, including the KK theories obtained from the circle compactification of the 5d $\mathcal{N}= 1$ $E_n$ Seiberg theories. The focus is set on the relation between their Seiberg-Witten geometries and rational elliptic surfaces, with more attention being given to the modular surfaces, which we completely classify using the classification of subgroups of the modular group ${\rm PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$. We derive closed-form expressions for the modular functions for all congruence and some of the non-congruence sub…
We study the Feynman integral for the three-banana graph defined as the scalar two-point self-energy at three-loop order. The Feynman integral is evaluated for all identical internal masses in two space-time dimensions. Two calculations are given for the Feynman integral; one based on an interpretation of the integral as an inhomogeneous solution of a classical Picard-Fuchs differential equation, and the other using arithmetic algebraic geometry, motivic cohomology, and Eisenstein series. Both methods use the rather special fact that the Feynman integral is a family of regulator periods associ…
We relate one-loop scattering amplitudes of massless open- and closed-string states at the level of their low-energy expansion. The modular graph functions resulting from integration over closed-string punctures are observed to follow from symmetrized open-string integrals through a tentative generalization of the single-valued projection known from genus zero.
For an elliptic curve E over an abelian extension k/K with CM by K of Shimura type, the L-functions of its [k:K] Galois representations are Mellin transforms of Hecke theta functions; a modular parametrization (surjective map) from a modular curve to E pulls back the 1-forms on E to give the Hecke theta functions. This article refines the study of our earlier work and shows that certain class of chiral correlation functions in Type II string theory with [E]_C (E as real analytic manifold) as a target space yield the same Hecke theta functions as objects on the modular curve. The Kahler paramet…
We investigate the kernel space of an integral operator M(g) depending on the "spin" g and describing an elliptic Fourier transformation. The operator M(g) is an intertwiner for the elliptic modular double formed from a pair of Sklyanin algebras with the parameters $η$ and $τ$, Im$ τ>0$, Im$η>0$. For two-dimensional lattices $g=nη+ mτ/2$ and $g=1/2+nη+ mτ/2$ with incommensurate $1, 2η,τ$ and integers $n,m>0$, the operator M(g) has a finite-dimensional kernel that consists of the products of theta functions with two different modular parameters and is invariant under the action of generators of…
