We consider matrices on infinite trees which are universal covers of Jacobi matrices on finite graphs. We are interested in the question of the existence of sequences of finite covers whose normalized eigenvalue counting measures converge to the density of states of the operator on the infinite tree. We first of all construct a simple example where this convergence fails and then discuss two ways of constructing the required sequences: with random boundary conditions and through normal subgroups.
We establish Lieb-Thirring power bounds on discrete eigenvalues of Jacobi operators for Schatten class complex perturbations of periodic and more generally finite gap Jacobi matrices.
Our main result asserts that a certain natural non-linear operator on Jacobi matrices built by a hyperbolic polynomial with real Julia set is a contraction in operator norm if the polynomial is sufficiently hyperbolic. This allows us to get for such polynomials the solution of a problem of Bellissard, in other words, to prove the limit periodicity of the limit Jacobi matrix. This fact does not require the iteration of the same fixed polynomial, and therefore it gives a wide class of limit periodic Jacobi matrices with singular continuous spectrum.
In this work we build a certain machine that allows to construct almost periodic Jacobi matrices with singularly continuous spectrum a prescribed p-adic hull.
We obtain various versions of classical Lieb--Thirring bounds for one- and multi-dimensional complex Jacobi matrices. Our method is based on Fan-Mirski Lemma and seems to be fairly general.
We prove general comparison theorems for eigenvalues of perturbed Schrodinger operators that allow proof of Lieb--Thirring bounds for suitable non-free Schrodinger operators and Jacobi matrices.
We consider the 1D periodic Jacobi matrices. The spectrum of this operator is purely absolutely continuous and consists of intervals separated by gaps. We solve the inverse problem (including characterization) in terms of vertical slits on the quasimomentum domain . Furthermore, we obtain a priori two-sided estimates for vertical slits in terms of Jacoby matrices.
Prüfer variables are a standard tool in spectral theory, developed originally for perturbations of the free Schrödinger operator. They were generalized by Kiselev, Remling, and Simon to perturbations of an arbitrary Schrödinger operator. We adapt these generalized Prufer variables to the setting of Jacobi and Szegő recursions. We present an application to random $L^2$ perturbations of Jacobi and CMV matrices, and an application to decaying oscillatory perturbations of periodic Jacobi and CMV matrices.
We use a classical result of Gollinski and Ibragimov to prove an analog of the strong Szego theorem for Jacobi matrices on $l^2(\N)$. In particular, we consider the class of Jacobi matrices with conditionally summable parameter sequences and find necessary and sufficient conditions on the spectral measure such that $\sum_{k=n}^\infty b_k$ and $\sum_{k=n}^\infty (a_k^2 - 1)$ lie in $l^2_1$, the linearly-weighted $l^2$ space.
We establish Lieb-Thirring power bounds on discrete eigenvalues of Jacobi operators for Schatten class perturbations under very general assumptions. Our results apply, in particular, to perturbations of reflectionless Jacobi operators with finite gap and Cantor-type essential spectrum.
We use the classical results of Baxter and Gollinski-Ibragimov to prove a new spectral equivalence for Jacobi matrices on $l^2(\N)$. In particular, we consider the class of Jacobi matrices with conditionally summable parameter sequences and find necessary and sufficient conditions on the spectral measure such that $\sum_{k=n}^\infty b_k$ and $\sum_{k=n}^\infty (a_k^2 - 1)$ lie in $l^2_1 \cap l^1$ or $l^1_s$ for $s \geq 1$.
We develop a spectral analysis of a class of block Jacobi operators based on the conjugate operator method of Mourre. We give several applications including scalar Jacobi operators with periodic coefficients, a class of difference operators on cylindrical domains such as discrete wave propagators, and certain fourth-order difference operators.
We consider a class of Jacobi matrices with unbounded entries in the so called critical (double root, Jordan box) case. We prove a formula for the spectral density of the matrix which relates its spectral density to the asymptotics of orthogonal polynomials associated with the matrix.
We present a comprehensive treatment of relative oscillation theory for finite Jacobi matrices. We show that the difference of the number of eigenvalues of two Jacobi matrices in an interval equals the number of weighted sign-changes of the Wronskian of suitable solutions of the two underlying difference equations. Until now only the case of perturbations of the main diagonal was known. We extend the known results to arbitrary perturbations, allow any (half-)open and closed spectral intervals, simplify the proof, and establish the comparison theorem.
We disprove a conjecture of Breuer-Last-Simon concerning the absolutely continuous spectrum of Jacobi matrices with coefficients that obey an $\ell^2$ bounded variation condition with step $q$. We prove existence of a.c. spectrum on a smaller set than that specified by the conjecture and prove that our result is optimal.
We present necessary and sufficient conditions on the Jost function for the corresponding Jacobi parameters $a_n -1$ and $b_n$ to have a given degree of exponential decay.
We study structural properties of the Lyapunov exponent $γ$ and the density of states $k$ for ergodic (or just invariant) Jacobi matrices in a general framework. In this analysis, a central role is played by the function $w=-γ+iπk$ as a conformal map between certain domains. This idea goes back to Marchenko and Ostrovskii, who used this device in their analysis of the periodic problem.
We consider $C=A+B$ where $A$ is selfadjoint with a gap $(a,b)$ in its spectrum and $B$ is (relatively) compact. We prove a general result allowing $B$ of indefinite sign and apply it to obtain a $(δV)^{d/2}$ bound for perturbations of suitable periodic Schrodinger operators and a (not quite)Lieb-Thirring bound for perturbations of algebro-geometric almost periodic Jacobi matrices.
In this expository work, we collect some background results and give a short proof of the following theorem: periodic Jacobi matrices on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ exhibit strong ballistic motion.
Bounds on the exponential decay of generalized eigenfunctions of bounded and unbounded selfadjoint Jacobi matrices are established. Two cases are considered separately: (i) the case in which the spectral parameter lies in a general gap of the spectrum of the Jacobi matrix and (ii) the case of a lower semi-bounded Jacobi matrix with values of the spectral parameter below the spectrum. It is demonstrated by examples that both results are sharp. We apply these results to obtain a "many barriers-type" criterion for the existence of square-summable generalized eigenfunctions of an unbounded Jacobi …
If a Jacobi matrix $J$ is reflectionless on $(-2,2)$ and has a single $a_{n_0}$ equal to 1, then $J$ is the free Jacobi matrix $a_n\equiv 1$, $b_n\equiv 0$. I'll discuss this result and its generalization to arbitrary sets and present several applications, including the following: if a Jacobi matrix has some portion of its $a_n$'s close to 1, then one assumption in the Denisov-Rakhmanov Theorem can be dropped.
We consider continuous cocycles arising from CMV and Jacobi matrices. Assuming the Verblunsky and Jacobi coefficients arise from generalized skew-shifts, we prove that uniform hyperbolicity of the associated cocycles is $C^0$-dense. This implies that the associated CMV and Jacobi matrices have Cantor spectrum for a generic continuous sampling map.
We apply the methods of classical approximation theory (extreme properties of polynomials) to study the essential support $Σ_{ac}$ of the absolutely continuous spectrum of Jacobi matrices. First, we prove an upper bound on the measure of $Σ_{ac}$ which takes into account the value distribution of the diagonal elements, and implies the bound due to Deift-Simon and Poltoratski-Remling. Second, we generalise the differential inequality of Deift-Simon for the integrated density of states associated with the absolutely continuous spectrum to general Jacobi matrices.
We find a necessary and sufficient condition for a Herglotz function $m$ to be the Borel transform of the spectral measure of an exponentially decaying perturbation of a periodic Jacobi matrix. The condition is in terms of meromorphic continuation of $m$ to a natural Riemann surface and the structure of its zeros and poles. The analogous result is also established for the Borel transform of the spectral measure of eventually periodic Jacobi matrices. This paper generalizes the corresponding result from [17] for exponentially decaying perturbations of the free Jacobi matrix.
We study one-dimensional random Jacobi operators corresponding to strictly ergodic dynamical systems. In this context, we characterize the spectrum of these operators by non-uniformity of the transfer matrices and the set where the Lyapunov exponent vanishes. Adapting this result to subshifts satisfying the so-called Boshernitzan condition, it turns out that the spectrum is supported on a Cantor set with Lebesgue measure zero. This generalizes earlier results for Schrödinger operators.
We announce three results in the theory of Jacobi matrices and Schrödinger operators. First, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a measure to be the spectral measure of a Schrödinger operator $-\f{d^2}{dx^2} +V(x)$ on $L^2 (0,\infty)$ with $V\in L^2 (0,\infty)$ and $u(0)=0$ boundary condition. Second, we give necessary and sufficient conditions on the Jacobi parameters for the associated orthogonal polynomials to have Szegő asymptotics. Finally, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions on a measure to be the spectral measure of a Jacobi matrix with exponential decay at a give…
Several examples of Jacobi matrices with an explicitly solvable spectral problem are worked out in detail. In all discussed cases the spectrum is discrete and coincides with the set of zeros of a special function. Moreover, the components of corresponding eigenvectors are expressible in terms of special functions as well. Our approach is based on a recently developed formalism providing us with explicit expressions for the characteristic function and eigenvectors of Jacobi matrices. This is done under an assumption of a simple convergence condition on matrix entries. Among the treated special …
This work is in a stream initiated by a paper of Killip and Simon [Ann. of Math. (2003)]. Using methods of Functional Analysis and the classical Szegö Theorem we prove sum rule identities in a very general form. Then, we apply the result to obtain new asymptotics for orthonormal polynomials.
One of the first theorems in perturbation theory claims that for an arbitrary self-adjoint operator A there exists a perturbation B of Hilbert-Schmidt class, which destroys completely the absolutely continuous spectrum of A (von Neumann). However, if A is the discrete free 1-D Schrödinger operator and B is a Jacobi matrix the a.c. spectrum remains perfectly the same. Moreover, Killip and Simon described explicitly the spectral properties for such A+B. Jointly with Damanik they generalized this result to the case of perturbations of periodic Jacobi matrices. Recall that the spectrum of a period…
We present results on the unique reconstruction of a semi-infinite Jacobi operator from the spectra of the operator with two different boundary conditions. This is the discrete analogue of the Borg-Marchenko theorem for Schr{ö}dinger operators in the half-line. Furthermore, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for two real sequences to be the spectra of a Jacobi operator with different boundary conditions.
In this paper, a family of random Jacobi matrices, with off-diagonal terms that exhibit power-law growth, is studied. Since the growth of the randomness is slower than that of these terms, it is possible to use methods applied in the study of Schrödinger operators with random decaying potentials. A particular result of the analysis is the existence of operators with arbitrarily fast transport whose spectral measure is zero dimensional. The results are applied to the infinite Gaussian $β$ Ensembles and their spectral properties are analyzed.
We prove bounds of the form $\sum_{e\in I\capσ_\di (H)} \dist (e,σ_\e (H))^{1/2} \leq L^1$-norm of a perturbation, where $I$ is a gap. Included are gaps in continuum one-dimensional periodic Schrödinger operators and finite gap Jacobi matrices where we get a generalized Nevai conjecture about an $L^1$ condition implying a Szegő condition. One key is a general new form of the Birman--Schwinger bound in gaps.
We investigate quantum dynamics with the underlying Hamiltonian being a Jacobi or a block Jacobi matrix with the diagonal and the off-diagonal terms modulated by a periodic or a limit-periodic sequence. In particular, we investigate the transport exponents. In the periodic case we demonstrate ballistic transport, while in the limit-periodic case we discuss various phenomena such as quasi-ballistic transport and weak dynamical localization. We also present applications to some quantum many body problems. In particular, we establish for the anisotropic XY chain on $\mathbb{Z}$ with periodic para…
We show Hölder continuity for the integrated density of states of a quasi-periodic Jacobi operator with analytic coefficients, in the regime of positive Lyapunov exponent and with a strong Diophantine condition on the frequency. In particular, when the coefficients are trigonometric polynomials we express the Hölder exponent in terms of the degrees of the coefficients.
We develop direct and inverse scattering theory for Jacobi operators with steplike coefficients which are asymptotically close to different finite-gap quasi-periodic coefficients on different sides. We give a complete characterization of the scattering data, which allow unique solvability of the inverse scattering problem in the class of perturbations with finite first moment.
For Jacobi matrices with a_n = 1+(-1)^n alpha n^{-gamma}, b_n = (-1)^n beta n^{-gamma}, we study bound states and the SzegHo condition. We provide a new proof of Nevai's result that if gamma > 1/2, the Szego condition holds, which works also if one replaces (-1)^n by cos(mu n). We show that if alpha = 0, beta not equal to 0, and gamma < 1/2, the Szego condition fails. We also show that if gamma = 1, alpha and beta are small enough (beta^2 + 8 alpha^2 < 1/24 will do), then the Jacobi matrix has finitely many bound states (for alpha = 0, beta large, it has infinitely many).
We consider two-sided Jacobi matrices whose coefficients are obtained by continuous sampling along the orbits of a homeomorphim of a compact metric space. Given an ergodic probability measure, we study the topological structure of the associated almost sure spectrum. We establish a gap labelling theorem in the spirit of Johnson and Schwartzman. That is, we show that the constant value the integrated density of states takes in a gap of the spectrum must belong to the countable Schwartzman group of the base dynamics. This result is a natural companion to a recent result of Alkorn and Zhang, whic…
For the periodic matrix-valued Jacobi operator $J$ we obtain the estimate of the Lebesgue measure of the spectrum $|\s(J)|\le4 \min_n\Tr(a_na_n^*)^\frac12$, where $a_n$ are off-diagonal elements of $J$. Moreover estimates of width of spectral bands are obtained.
We study scaling limits of deterministic Jacobi matrices at a fixed point, $x_0$, and their connection to the scaling limits of the Christoffel-Darboux kernel at that point. We show that in the case that the orthogonal polynomials are bounded at $x_0$, a subsequential limit always exists and can be expressed as a canonical system. We further show that under weak conditions on the associated measure, bulk universality of the CD kernel is equivalent to the existence of a limit of a particular explicit form.
We consider a set of measures on the real line and the corresponding system of multiple orthogonal polynomials (MOPs) of the first and second type. Under some very mild assumptions, which are satisfied by Angelesco systems, we define self-adjoint Jacobi matrices on certain rooted trees. We express their Green's functions and the matrix elements in terms of MOPs. This provides a generalization of the well-known connection between the theory of polynomials orthogonal on the real line and Jacobi matrices on $\mathbb{Z}_+$ to higher dimension. We illustrate importance of this connection by proving…
We study spectrum inclusion regions for complex Jacobi matrices which are compact perturbations of real periodic Jacobi matrices. The condition sufficient for the lack of discrete spectrum for such matrices is given
The paper contains two results on the equivalence classes of block Jacobi matrices: first, that the Jacobi matrix of type 2 in the Nevai class has A_n coefficients converging to 1, and second, that under an L1-type condition on the Jacobi coefficients, equivalent Jacobi matrices of type 1, 2 and 3 are pairwise asymptotic.
Let J be a monic Jacobi matrix associated with the Cauchy transform F of a probability measure. We construct a pair of the lower and upper triangular block matrices L and U such that J=LU and the matrix J_c=UL is a monic generalized Jacobi matrix associated with the function F_c(z)=zF(z)+1. It turns out that the Christoffel transformation J_c of a bounded monic Jacobi matrix J can be unbounded. This phenomenon is shown to be related to the effect of accumulating at infinity of the poles of the Padé approximants of the function F_c although F_c is holomorphic at infinity. The case of the UL-fac…
Necessary and sufficient conditions are presented for a measure to be the spectral measure of a finite range or exponentially decaying perturbation of a periodic Jacobi operator. As a corollary we can fully solve the inverse resonance problem: given resonances and eigenvalues we can recover the spectral measure of the Jacobi operator; we provide necessary and sufficient conditions under which such an operator exists and is unique; and we show that the inverse resonance problem is stable under small perturbations.
We study spectrum inclusion regions for complex Jacobi matrices which are compact perturbations of the discrete laplacian. The condition sufficient for the lack of discrete spectrum for such matrices is given.
We study spaces of reflectionless Jacobi matrices. The main theme is the following type of question: Given a reflectionless Jacobi matrix, is it possible to approximate it by other reflectionless and, typically, simpler Jacobi matrices of a special type? For example, can we approximate by periodic operators?
We compute the asymptotics of eigenvalues of Jacobi matrices with the zero coefficients on the main diagonal and the off-diagonal coefficients which converge to zero.
We prove that on the spectrum the integrated density of states (IDS for short) of periodic Jacobi matrices is related to the discriminant. The method is to count the number of generalized zeros of Bloch wave solutions.
A complete characterization is provided of Hankel matrices commuting with Jacobi matrices which correspond to hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials from the Askey scheme. It follows, as the main result of the paper, that the generalized Hilbert matrix is the only prominent infinite-rank Hankel matrix which, if regarded as an operator on $\ell^{2}(\mathbb{N}_{0})$, is diagonalizable by application of the commutator method with Jacobi matrices from the mentioned families.
One of the first and therefore most important theorems in perturbation theory claims that for an arbitrary self-adjoint operator A there exists a perturbation B of Hilbert-Schmidt class with arbitrary small operator norm, which destroys completely the absolutely continuos (a.c.) spectrum of the initial operator A (von Neumann). However, if A is the discrete free 1-D Schrödinger operator and B is an arbitrary Jacobi matrix (of Hilbert-Schmidt class) the a.c. spectrum remains perfectly the same, that is, the interval [-2,2]. Moreover, Killip and Simon described explicitly the spectral properties…
