We holographically compute the Rényi relative divergence $D_α (ρ_{+} || ρ_{-})$ between two density matrices $ρ_{+}, \; ρ_{-}$ prepared by path integrals with constant background fields $λ_{\pm}$ coupled to a marginal operator in JT gravity. Our calculation is non perturbative in the difference between two sources $ λ_{+} -λ_{-}$. When this difference is large, the bulk geometry becomes a black hole with the maximal temperature allowed by the Rényi index $α$. In this limit, we find an analytic expression of the Rényi relative divergence, which is given by the on shell action of the back reacted black hole plus the contribution coming from the discontinuous change of the background field.
We study the UV divergences in the action of the "Wheeler-de Witt patch" in asymptotically AdS spacetimes, which has been conjectured to be dual to the computational complexity of the state of the dual field theory on a spatial slice of the boundary. We show that including a surface term in the action on the null boundaries which ensures invariance under coordinate transformations has the additional virtue of removing a stronger than expected divergence, making the leading divergence proportional to the proper volume of the boundary spatial slice. We compare the divergences in the action to di…
In this paper, minimal surface in $q$-deformed $AdS_5\times S^5$ with boundary a cusp is studied in detail. This minimal surface is dual to cusped Wilson loop in the dual field theory. We found that the area of the minimal surface has both logarithmic squared divergence and logarithmic divergence. The logarithmic squared divergence can not be removed by either Legendre transformation or the usual geometric substraction. We further make analytic continuation to the Minkowski signature %for the case without the jump and take the limit such that the two edges of the cusp become light-like and ext…
We study the holographic dual of a two parameter family of quantities known as the $α$-$z$ divergences. Many familiar information theoretic quantities occur within this family, including the relative entropy, fidelity, and collision relative entropy. We find explicit bulk expressions for the boundary divergences to second order in a state perturbation whenever $α$ is an integer and $z\geq0$, as well as when $z\in\{0,\infty\}$ and $α\in \mathbb{R}$. Our results apply for perturbations around an arbitrary background state and in any dimension, under the assumption of the equality of bulk and bou…
We found Bogomol'nyi type of the first order differential equations in three dimensional Einstein gravity and the effective second order ones in new massive gravity when an interacting scalar field is minimally coupled. Using these equations in Einstein gravity, we obtain analytic solutions corresponding to extremally rotating hairy black holes. We also obtain perturbatively extremal black hole solutions in new massive gravity using these lower order differential equations. All these solutions have the anti de-Sitter spaces as their asymptotic geometries and as the near horizon ones. This feat…
We show the entanglement entropy in certain quantum field theories to contain state-dependent divergences. Both perturbative and holographic examples are exhibited. However, quantities such as the relative entropy and the generalized entropy of black holes remain finite, due to cancellation of divergences. We classify all possible state-dependent divergences that can appear in both perturbatively renormalizeable and holographic covariant $d\le 6$ quantum field theories.
A systematic procedure for performing holographic renormalization, which makes use of the Hamilton-Jacobi method, is proposed and applied to a bulk theory of gravity interacting with a scalar field and a U(1) gauge field in the Stueckelberg formalism. We describe how the power divergences are obtained as solutions of a set of "descent equations" stemming from the radial Hamiltonian constraint of the theory. In addition, we isolate the logarithmic divergences, which are closely related to anomalies. The method allows to determine also the exact one-point functions of the dual field theory. Usin…
We show that in general holographic stress tensor may contain a new term of divergence of a spacelike unit normal acceleration. Then, it is shown that in contrast to previous descriptions, a new stress tensor for Kerr-AdS solutions can be a traceless one. Interestingly, this prescription entails a local failure on the IR-UV connection.
In AdS/CFT corresponding, the UV divergence of generating functional on the field theory can be removed as the IR divergence in the gravity. This geometric process is well known as holographic renormalization. The standard method of holographic renormalization is based on the Fefferman-Graham expansion, which is strict and universal but technically cumbersome. To improve the technique, different methods have been proposed. Here we develop an alternative approach to holographic renormalization based on the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of gravity. Compared to previous approaches, its distinguishi…
We study two recent conjectures for holographic complexity: the complexity=action conjecture and the complexity=volume conjecture. In particular, we examine the structure of the UV divergences appearing in these quantities, and show that the coefficients can be written as local integrals of geometric quantities in the boundary. We also consider extending these conjectures to evaluate the complexity of the mixed state produced by reducing the pure global state to a specific subregion of the boundary time slice. The UV divergences in this subregion complexity have a similar geometric structure, …
Within the framework of holography applied to condensed matter physics, we study a model of perturbatively charged disorder in D=4 dimensions. Starting from initially uncharged AdS_4, a randomly fluctuating boundary chemical potential is introduced by turning on a bulk gauge field parameterized by a disorder strength and a characteristic scale k_0. Accounting for gravitational backreaction, we construct an asymptotically AdS solution perturbatively in the disorder strength. The disorder averaged geometry displays unphysical divergences in the deep interior. We explain how to remove these diver…
There has been considerable recent interest in holographic complexity. The two leading conjectures on this subject hold that the quantum complexity of the boundary thermofield double state should be dual to either the volume of the Einstein-Rosen bridge connecting the two sides (CV conjecture) or to the action of the Wheeler-de-Witt patch of the bulk spacetime (CA conjecture). Although these conjectures are frequently studied in the context of pure Einstein gravity, from the perspective of string theory it is also natural to consider models of gravity in which general relativity is perturbed b…
We consider the problem of IR divergences of the action in the covariant formulation of teleparallel gravity in asymptotically Minkowski spacetimes. We show that divergences are caused by inertial effects and can be removed by adding an appropriate surface term, leading to the renormalized action. This process can be viewed as a teleparallel analogue of holographic renormalization. Moreover, we explore the variational problem in teleparallel gravity and explain how the variation with respect to the spin connection should be performed.
It was proposed by Miyaji et al. that the fidelity susceptibility of a state of a conformal field theory under a marginal deformation is holographically dual to the volume of a maximal time slice in the dual Anti de Sitter spacetime. We study this proposal by analyzing the leading and subleading divergences in these two quantities in two specific scenarios. We find that although the structure of the divergences in these two quantities is similar, their numerical coefficients are inconsistent with an exact relationship between these two quantities.
We investigate the structure of holographic renormalization in the presence of sources for irrelevant operators. By working perturbatively in the sources we avoid issues related to the non-renormalizability of the dual field theory. We find new classes of divergences which appear to be non-local on the gravity side. However in all cases a systematic renormalization procedure exists involving either standard local counterterms or new counterterms which may be interpreted as multi-trace counterterms in the field theory. The multi-trace counterterms reflect a more intricate relation between sourc…
Recently holographic prescriptions are proposed to compute quantum complexity of a given state in the boundary theory. A specific proposal known as `holographic subregion complexity' is supposed to calculate the the complexity of a reduced density matrix corresponding to a static subregion. We study different families of singular subregions in the dual field theory and find the divergence structure and universal terms of holographic subregion complexity for these singular surfaces. We find that there are new universal terms, logarithmic in the UV cutoff, due to the singularities of a family of…
The general correlator of composite operators of N=4 supersymmetric gauge field theory is divergent. We introduce a means for renormalizing these correlators by adding a boundary theory on the AdS space correcting for the divergences. Such renormalizations are not equivalent to the standard normal ordering of current algebras in two dimensions. The correlators contain contact terms that contribute to the OPE; we relate them diagrammatically to correlation functions of compound composite operators dual to multi-particle states.
We use gauge-gravity duality to compute a new transport coefficient associated with a number Nf of massive N=2 supersymmetric hypermultiplet fields propagating through an N=4 SU(Nc) super-Yang-Mills theory plasma in the limits of large Nc and large 't Hooft coupling, with Nf << Nc. We introduce a baryon number density as well as arbitrary constant electric and magnetic fields, generalizing previous calculations by including a magnetic field with a component parallel to the electric field. We can thus compute all components of the conductivity tensor associated with transport of baryon number c…
In this paper we study the holographic entanglement entropy in a large N noncommutative gauge field theory with two $θ$ parameters by Ryu-Takayanagi prescription (RT-formula). We discuss what contributions the presence of noncommutativity will make to the entanglement entropy in two different circumstances: 1) a rectangular strip and 2) a cylinder. Since we want to investigate the entanglement entropy only, we will not be discussing the finite temperature case in which the entropy calculated by the area of minimal surface will largely be the thermal part rather than the entanglement part. We f…
In this paper, we develop a novel way to perturbatively calculate Rényi relative divergences $D_γ(ρ|| σ) ={\rm tr} ρ^γ σ^{1-γ}$ and related quantities without using replica trick as well as analytic continuation. We explicitly determine the form of the perturbative term at any order by an integral along the modular flow of the unperturbed state. By applying the prescription to a class of reduced density matrices in conformal field theory, we find that the second order term of certain linear combination of the divergences has a holographic expression in terms of bulk symplectic form, which is a…
Holographic renormalization is a systematic procedure for regulating divergences in observables in asymptotically locally AdS spacetimes. For dual boundary field theories which are supersymmetric it is natural to ask whether this defines a supersymmetric renormalization scheme. Recent results in localization have brought this question into sharp focus: rigid supersymmetry on a curved boundary requires specific geometric structures, and general arguments imply that BPS observables, such as the partition function, are invariant under certain deformations of these structures. One can then ask if …
We study the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of effective mechanical actions associated with holographic renormalization group flows when the field theory is put on the sphere and mass terms are turned on. Although the system is supersymmetric and it is described by a superpotential, Hamilton's characteristic function is not readily given by the superpotential when the boundary of AdS is curved. We propose a method to construct the solution as a series expansion in scalar field degrees of freedom. The coefficients are functions of the warp factor to be determined by a differential equation one obt…
We use the relation between certain diffeomorphisms in the bulk and Weyl transformations on the boundary to build the conformal structure of the metric in the presence of matter in the bulk. We explicitly obtain the conformal anomaly in any spacetime dimension d in a holographic frame work in the case of gravity coupled to the scalar fields. This way we also provide a holographic construction of the bulk spacetime metric and of the matter fields in the bulk of this spacetime out of sources that are related to conformal field theory data. With the latter, we produce an asymptotic expansion of t…
We revisit the subject of holographic renormalization for asymptotically AdS spacetimes. For many applications of holography, one has to handle the divergences associated with the on-shell gravitational action. The brute force approach uses the Fefferman-Graham (FG) expansion near the AdS boundary to identify the divergences, but subsequent reversal of the expansion is needed to construct the infinite counterterms. While in principle straightforward, the method is cumbersome and application/reversal of FG is formally unsatisfactory. Various authors have proposed an alternative method based on …
We study the 't Hooft's brick wall model for black holes in a holographic context. The brick wall model suggests that without an appropriate near horizon IR cut-off, the free energy of the probe fields show the divergence due to the large degenerate states near the horizons. After studying the universal nature of the divergence in various holographic setting in various dimensions, we interpret the nature of the divergence in a holographic context. The free energy divergence is due to the large degeneracy and continuity of the low energy spectrum in the boundary theory at the deconfinement phas…
Recently, it has been shown that for out-of-equilibrium systems, there are additional constraints on thermodynamical evolution besides the ordinary second law. These form a new family of second laws of thermodynamics, which are equivalent to the monotonicity of quantum Rényi divergences. In black hole thermodynamics, the usual second law is manifest as the area increase theorem. Hence one may ask if these additional laws imply new restrictions for gravitational dynamics, such as for out-of-equilibrium black holes? Inspired by this question, we study these constraints within the AdS/CFT corresp…
We compute holographic complexity for the non-supersymmetric Janus deformation of AdS$_5$ according to the volume conjecture. The result is characterized by a power-law ultraviolet divergence. When a ball-shaped region located around the interface is considered, a sub-leading logarithmic divergent term and a finite part appear in the corresponding subregion volume complexity. Using two different prescriptions to regularize the divergences, we find that the coefficient of the logarithmic term is universal.
We study the effects of including higher-curvature corrections to the Einstein gravity bulk action on the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) expression for geometries with hyperscaling violation (hvLf). For $θ< 0$ we show that one single new divergence arises for general curvature-squared gravities, which allows us to conjecture the general expression of HEE for any higher-order gravity action. For $0<θ<d$, we assume the hvLf geometry to arise above some intermediate scale $r_F$, becoming AdS in the UV and perform a similar analysis for $R^n$ gravities. For negative values of $θ$ we find t…
In this work, we continue our study of string theory in the background that interpolates between $AdS_3$ in the IR to flat spacetime with a linear dilaton in the UV. The boundary dual theory interpolates between a CFT$_2$ in the IR to a certain two-dimensional Little String Theory (LST) in the UV. In particular, we study \emph{computational complexity} of such a theory through the lens of holography and investigate the signature of non-locality in the short distance behavior of complexity. When the cutoff UV scale is much smaller than the non-locality (Hagedorn) scale, we find exotic quadratic…
By applying the holographic renormalization method to the metric formalism of f(Ric) gravity in three dimensions, we obtain the Brown-York boundary stress-tensor for backgrounds which asymptote to the locally AdS3 solution of Einstein gravity. The logarithmic divergence of the on-shell action can be subtracted by a non-covariant cut-off independent term which exchanges the trace anomaly for a gravitational anomaly. We show that the central charge can be determined by means of BTZ holography or in terms of the Hawking effect of a Schwarzschild black hole placed on the boundary.
We study entanglement entropy in a particular tensor-scalar theory: Horndeski gravity. Our goal is two-fold: investigate the Lewkowycz-Maldacena proposal for entanglement entropy in the presence of a tensor-scalar coupling and address a puzzle existing in the literature regarding the thermal entropy of asymptotically AdS Horndeski black holes. Using the squashed cone method, i.e. turning on a conical singularity in the bulk, we derive the functional for entanglement entropy in Horndeski gravity. We analyze the divergence structure of the bulk equation of motion. Demanding that the leading dive…
This note contains discussions on the entanglement entropy and mutual information of a strongly coupled field theory with a critical point which has a holographic dual. We investigate analytically, in the specific regimes of parameters, how these non-local operators behave near the critical point. Interestingly, we observe that although the mutual information is constant at the critical point, its slope shows a power-law divergence in the vicinity of the critical point. We show that the leading behavior of mutual information at and near the critical point could yield a set of critical exponent…
In this paper we study the Fisher information metric on the space of the coupling constants on both sides of the duality between non-relativistic dipole field theories and string theory in Schrödinger spacetime. We consider the following setup. In the gauge theory side one can deform a given conformal field theory by a proper scalar operator and compute the quantum information metric via the two-point correlation function between two such operators. On the string side the deformation corresponds to a scalar field probing the background. In the large $N$ limit of the theory the probing can be d…
We have analytically investigated the effects of non-linearity on the free energy and thermodynamic geometry of holographic superconductors in $2+1 -$dimensions. The non-linear effect is introduced by considering the coupling of the massive charged scalar field with Born-Infeld electrodynamics. We then calculate the relation between critical temperature and charge density from two different methods, namely, the matching method and the divergence of the scalar curvature which is obtained by investigating the thermodynamic geometry of the model. The two results are slightly different from numeri…
We develop a systematic method for renormalizing the AdS/CFT prescription for computing correlation functions. This involves regularizing the bulk on-shell supergravity action in a covariant way, computing all divergences, adding counterterms to cancel them and then removing the regulator. We explicitly work out the case of pure gravity up to six dimensions and of gravity coupled to scalars. The method can also be viewed as providing a holographic reconstruction of the bulk spacetime metric and of bulk fields on this spacetime, out of conformal field theory data. Knowing which sources are turn…
The domain of allowed von Neumann entropies of a holographic field theory carves out a polyhedral cone -- the holographic entropy cone -- in entropy space. Such polyhedral cones are characterized by their extreme rays. For an arbitrary number of parties, it is known that the so-called perfect tensors are extreme rays. In this work, we constrain the form of the remaining extreme rays by showing that they correspond to geometries with vanishing mutual information between any two parties, ensuring the absence of Bell pair type entanglement between them. This is tantamount to proving that besides …
We analytically obtain the free energy and thermodynamic geometry of holographic superconductors in $2+1$-dimensions. The gravitational theory in the bulk dual to this $2+1$-dimensional strongly coupled theory lives in the $3+1$-dimensions and is that of a charged $AdS$ black hole together with a massive charged scalar field. The matching method is applied to obtain the nature of the fields near the horizon using which the holographic free energy is computed through the gauge/gravity duality. The critical temperature is obtained for a set of values of the matching point of the near horizon and…
The holographic complexity of formation for the AdS$_3$ $2$-sided Randall-Sundrum model and the AdS$_3$/BCFT$_2$ models is logarithmically divergent according to the volume conjecture, while it is finite using the action proposal. One might be tempted to conclude that the UV divergences of the volume and action conjectures are always different for defects and boundaries in two-dimensional conformal field theories. We show that this is not the case. In fact, in Janus AdS$_3$ we find that both volume and action proposals provide the same kind of logarithmic divergences.
At leading order, the $S$-matrices in QED and gravity are known to factorise, providing unambiguous determinations of the parts divergent due to infrared contributions. The soft $S$-matrices defined in this fashion are shown to be defined entirely in terms of $2$ dimensional models on the celestial sphere, involving two real scalar fields, allowing us to express the soft $S$-matrices for real as well as virtual divergences as two dimensional correlation functions. We discuss what this means for finding holographic representations of scattering amplitudes in QED and gravity and comment on simpl…
In the holographic approach to cosmology, cosmological observables are described in terms of correlators of a three-dimensional boundary quantum field theory. As a concrete model, we study the 3$d$ massless $SU(N)$ scalar matrix field theory. In this work, we focus on the renormalisation of the energy-momentum tensor 2-point function, which can be related to the CMB power spectra. Here we present a non-perturbative procedure to remove divergences resulting from the loss of translational invariance on the lattice, by imposing Ward identities. This will allow us to make predictions for the CMB p…
Using Exact Renormalization Group Equation approach and background field method, we investigate the one-loop problem in a six-dimensional conformal gravity theory whose Lagrangian takes the same form as holographic Weyl anomaly of multiple coincident M5-branes. We choose the backgrounds to be the symmetric Einstein spaces including S6, CP3, S2 \times S4, S2 \times CP2, S3 \times S3 and S2 \times S2 \times S2. Evaluating the functional sums gives power-law and logarithmic divergences. We extract from the specific values of logarithmic divergence on above backgrounds, the coefficient in front of…
Entanglement entropy plays a variety of roles in quantum field theory, including the connections between quantum states and gravitation through the holographic principle. This article provides a review of entanglement entropy from a mixed viewpoint of field theory and holography. A set of basic methods for the computation is developed and illustrated with simple examples such as free theories and conformal field theories. The structures of the ultraviolet divergences and the universal parts are determined and compared with the holographic descriptions of entanglement entropy. The utility of qu…
We study the renormalization of Entanglement Entropy in holographic CFTs dual to Lovelock gravity. It is known that the holographic EE in Lovelock gravity is given by the Jacobson-Myers (JM) functional. As usual, due to the divergent Weyl factor in the Fefferman-Graham expansion of the boundary metric for Asymptotically AdS spaces, this entropy functional is infinite. By considering the Kounterterm renormalization procedure, which utilizes extrinsic boundary counterterms in order to renormalize the on-shell Lovelock gravity action for AAdS spacetimes, we propose a new renormalization prescript…
We study the finite term of the holographic entanglement entropy of finite domains with smooth shapes and for four dimensional gravitational backgrounds. Analytic expressions depending on the unit vectors normal to the minimal area surface are obtained for both stationary and time dependent spacetimes. The special cases of AdS4, asymptotically AdS4 black holes, domain wall geometries and Vaidya-AdS backgrounds have been analysed explicitly. When the bulk spacetime is AdS4, the finite term is the Willmore energy of the minimal area surface viewed as a submanifold of the three dimensional flat E…
We study the holographic entanglement entropy of an interval in a quantum field theory obtained by deforming a holographic two-dimensional conformal field theory via a general linear combination of irrelevant operators that are closely related to, but nonetheless distinct from, $T{\bar T}, \ J{\bar T}$ and $T{\bar J}$, and compute the Casin-Huerta entropic $c$-function. We find that the entropic $c$-function is ultraviolet regulator independent, and along the renormalization group upflow towards the ultraviolet, it is non-decreasing. We show that the entropic $c$-function exhibits a power law …
We explore the two holographic complexity proposals for the case of a 2d boundary CFT with a conformal defect. We focus on a Randall-Sundrum type model of a thin AdS$_2$ brane embedded in AdS$_3$. We find that, using the "complexity=volume" proposal, the presence of the defect generates a logarithmic divergence in the complexity of the full boundary state with a coefficient which is related to the central charge and to the boundary entropy. For the "complexity=action" proposal we find that the complexity is not influenced by the presence of the defect. This is the first case in which the resul…
We construct the most general theory of 2D Einstein-dilaton gravity coupled with $U(1)$ gauge fields that contains all the 2-derivative and the 4-derivative interactions allowed by the diffeomorphism invariance. We renormalise the 2D action and obtain the vacuum solution as well as the black hole solution. The vacuum solution in the UV is dominated by Lifshitz$_2$ with dynamical exponent ($z=\frac{7}{3}$) while on the other hand, the spacetime curvature diverges as we move towards the deep IR limit. We calculate the holographic stress tensor and the central charge for the boundary theory. Our …
In this thesis we study two different approaches to holography, and comment on the possible relation between them. The first approach is an analysis of the high-energy regime of quantum gravity in the eikonal approximation, where the theory reduces to a topological field theory. This is the regime where particles interact at high energies but with small momentum transfer. We do this for the cases of asymptotically dS and AdS geometries and find that in both cases the theory is topological. We discuss the relation of our solutions in AdS to those of Horowitz and Itzhaki. We also consider quantu…
We propose a general formula for calculating the entanglement entropy in theories dual to higher derivative gravity where the Lagrangian is a contraction of Riemann tensors. Our formula consists of Wald's formula for the black hole entropy, as well as corrections involving the extrinsic curvature. We derive these corrections by noting that they arise from naively higher order contributions to the action which are enhanced due to would-be logarithmic divergences. Our formula reproduces the Jacobson-Myers entropy in the context of Lovelock gravity, and agrees with existing results for general fo…
We consider CFT states defined by adding nonlocal multi-trace sources to the Euclidean path integral defining the vacuum state. For holographic theories, we argue that these states correspond to states in the gravitational theory with a good semiclassical description but with a more general structure of bulk entanglement than states defined from single-trace sources. We show that at leading order in large N, the entanglement entropies for any such state are precisely the same as those of another state defined by appropriate single-trace effective sources; thus, if the leading order entanglemen…
