There has been considerable recent interest in holographic complexity. The two leading conjectures on this subject hold that the quantum complexity of the boundary thermofield double state should be dual to either the volume of the Einstein-Rosen bridge connecting the two sides (CV conjecture) or to the action of the Wheeler-de-Witt patch of the bulk spacetime (CA conjecture). Although these conjectures are frequently studied in the context of pure Einstein gravity, from the perspective of string theory it is also natural to consider models of gravity in which general relativity is perturbed by higher powers of the Riemann tensor, suppressed by powers of the string length; in a holographic context, these corrections are dual to corrections in inverse powers of the 't Hooft coupling. In this paper, we investigate the CV and CA conjectures in two stringy models of higher-curvature gravity. We find that the CV complexification rate remains well-behaved, but conversely that these corrections induce new divergences in the CA complexification rate that are absent in pure Einstein gravity. These divergences are intrinsically linked to the singularity, and appear to be generic in higher curvature theories. To the best of our knowledge, infinities originating at the singularity have not yet been observed elsewhere in the literature. We argue that these divergences imply that, in the CA picture, the complexification rate of the boundary theory is a nonanalytic function of the 't Hooft coupling.
Based on the holographic conjecture for superstrings on Dp-brane backgrounds and the dual (p+1)-dimensional gauge theory ($0\le p\le 4$) given in hep-th/0308024 and hep-th/0405203, we continue the study of superstring amplitudes including string higher modes ($n\ne 0$). We give a prediction to the two-point functions of operators with large R-charge J. The effect of stringy modes do not appear as the form of anomalous dimensions except for p=3. Instead, it gives non-trivial correction to the two-point functions for supergravity modes. For p=4, the scalar two-point functions for any n behave li…
We model the soft pomeron in QCD using a scalar Polyakov string with extrinsic curvature in the bottom-up approach of holographic QCD. The overall dipole-dipole scattering amplitude in the soft pomeron kinematics is shown to be sensitive to the extrinsic curvature of the string for finite momentum transfer. The characteristics of the diffractive peak in the differential elastic $pp$ scattering are affected by a small extrinsic curvature of the string.
We study supersymmetric domain walls on S_1/Z_2 orbifolds. The supergravity solutions in the bulk are given by the attractor equation associated with Calabi-Yau spaces and have a naked space-time singularity at some |y_s|. We are looking for possibilities to cut off this singularity with the second wall by a stringy mechanism. We use the collapse of the CY cycle at |y_c| which happens before and at a finite distance from the space-time singularity. In our example with three Kahler moduli the second wall is at the end of the moduli space at |y_c| where also the enhancement of SU(2) gauge symmet…
We show that the null Melvin map applied to a rotational isometry of global anti-de Sitter space produces a spacetime with properties analogous to both the Godel and Schrodinger geometries. The isometry group of this Godel-Schrodinger spacetime is appropriate to provide a holographic dual for the same non-relativistic conformal theory as the ordinary Schrodinger geometry, but defined on a sphere. This spacetime also possesses closed timelike curves outside a certain critical radius. We show that a holographic preferred screen for an observer at the origin sits at an interior radius, suggesting…
We discuss the classical 2-dim. black-hole in the framework of the non-perturbative formulation (in terms of non-relativistic fermions) of c=1 string field theory. We identify an off-shell operator whose classical equation of motion is that of tachyon in the classical graviton-dilaton black-hole background. The black-hole `singularity' is identified with the fermi surface in the phase space of a single fermion, and as such is a consequence of the semi-classical approximation. An exact treatment reveals that stringy quantum effects wash away the classical singularity.
We consider a class of 4D supersymmetric black hole solutions, arising from string theory compactifications, which classically have vanishing horizon area and singular space-time geometry. String theory motivates the inclusion of higher derivative terms, which convert these singular classical solutions into regular black holes with finite horizon area. In particular, the supersymmetric attractor equations imply that the central charge, which determines the radius of the $AdS_2\times S^2$ near horizon geometry, acquires a non-vanishing value due to quantum effects. In this case quantum correcti…
By studying string loop corrections to superpotential of type II strings compactified on Calabi-Yau threefolds we find a quantum stringy test and a confirmation of a recent proposal of Strominger on the fate of the conifold singularity. We also propose a connection between the spectrum of Bogomolnyi saturated solitons and one-loop string partition function of $N=2$ topological strings.
We consider the finite temperature phase diagram of holographic QCD in the Veneziano limit (Nc large, Nf large with xf=Nf/Nc fixed) and calculate one string-loop corrections to the free energy in certain approximations. Such corrections, especially due to the pion modes are unsuppressed in the Veneziano limit. We find that under some extra assumptions the first order transition following from classical gravity solutions can become second order. If stringy asymptotics are of a special form and there are residual interactions it may even become of third order. Operationally these computations im…
We study cosmological solutions to the low-energy effective action of heterotic string theory including possible leading order $α'$ corrections and a potential for the dilaton. We consider the possibility that including such stringy corrections can resolve the initial cosmological singularity. Since the exact form of these corrections is not known the higher-derivative terms are constructed so that they vanish when the metric is de Sitter spacetime. The constructed terms are compatible with known restrictions from scattering amplitude and string worldsheet beta-function calculations. Analytic …
Hawking radiation is computed in different coordinate systems using the method of complex paths. In this procedure the event horizon of the 2D Schwarzschild stringy black hole is treated as a singularity for the semiclassical action functional. After the regularization of the event horizon's singularity the emission/absorption probabilities and the Hawking temperature in the different coordinate representations are derived. The identical results obtained indicate the covariance of the Hawking radiation.
The exact black hole solution of 2D closed string theory has, as any other maximally extended Schwarzschild-like geometry, two asymptotically flat spacetime domains. One can get rid of the second domain by gauging the discrete symmetry on the SL(2,R)/U(1) coset that interchanges the two asymptotic domains and preserves the Kruskal time orientation everywhere in the Kruskal plane. Here it is shown that upon performing this orbifold procedure, we obtain a theory of unoriented open and closed strings in a black hole background, with just one asymptotically flat domain and a time-like orbifold sin…
In this study, we have analytically considered a dislocation in three-dimensional Weyl semimetal and its holographic model. A quantum singularity that originated in the dislocation creates a defect in momentum space. This defect causes topologically protected zero-energy mode bound to the quantum singularity. The defect has two aspects: First, it prevents the formation of a topological winding number. Second, it provides another topological number around itself. The gauge field adjusts these effects of the defect, and it is possible to control the phase transition. Further, from holographic du…
In the type IIB maximally supersymmetric pp-wave background, stringy excited modes are described by BMN (Berenstein-Madalcena-Nastase) operators in the dual $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory. In this paper, we continue the studies of higher genus free BMN correlators with more stringy modes, mostly focusing on the case of genus one and four stringy modes in different transverse directions. Surprisingly, we find that the non negativity of torus two-point functions, which is a consequence of a previously proposed probability interpretation and has been verified in the cases with two and th…
We generalize the local surface counterterm prescription suggested in Einstein gravity for higher derivative (HD) and Weyl gravities. Explicitly, the surface counterterm is found for three- and five-dimensional HD gravities. As a result, the gravitational action for asymptotically AdS spaces is finite and gravitational energy-momentum tensor is well-defined. The holographic trace anomaly for d2 and d4 boundary (gauge) QFT dual to above HD gravity is calculated from gravitational energy-momentum tensor. The calculation of AdS black hole mass in HD gravity is presented within above prescrition. …
We consider one of the simplest time-dependent backgrounds in M-theory, describing the shrinking away of the M-theory dimension with the other spatial dimensions static. As the M-theory dimension becomes small, the situation becomes well-described by string theory in a singular cosmological background where the string coupling tends to zero but the $α'$-corrections become large, near the cosmic singularity. We compute these $α'$-corrections, both for the background and for linearized perturbations, in heterotic string theory, and show they may be reproduced by a map from eleven-dimensional M-t…
In [1] we gave a precise holographic calculation of chaos at the scrambling time scale. We studied the influence of a small perturbation, long in the past, on a two-sided correlation function in the thermofield double state. A similar analysis applies to squared commutators and other out-of-time-order one-sided correlators [2-4]. The essential bulk physics is a high energy scattering problem near the horizon of an AdS black hole. The above papers used Einstein gravity to study this problem; in the present paper we consider stringy and Planckian corrections. Elastic stringy corrections play an …
Holography inspired stringy hadrons (HISH) is a set of models that describe hadrons: mesons, baryons and glueballs as strings in four dimensional space time. The models are based on a "map" from stringy hadrons of holographic confining backgrounds. In this note we review the "derivation" of the models. We start with a brief reminder of the passage from the AdS5xS5 string theory to certain flavored confining holographic models. We then describe the string configurations in holographic backgrounds that correspond to a Wilson line,a meson,a baryon and a glueball. The key ingredients of the four d…
We analyze excited baryon states using a holographic dual of QCD that is defined on the basis of an intersecting D4/D8-brane system. Studies of baryons in this model have been made by regarding them as a topological soliton of a gauge theory on a five-dimensional curved spacetime. However, this allows one to obtain only a certain class of baryons. We attempt to present a framework such that a whole set of excited baryons can be treated in a systematic way. This is achieved by employing the original idea of Witten, which states that a baryon is described by a system composed of $N_c$ open strin…
Holographic AdS/QCD models of the Pomeron unite a string-based description of hadronic reactions of the pre-QCD era with the perturbative BFKL approach. The specific version we will use due to Stoffers and Zahed, is based on a semiclassical quantization of a "tube" (closed string exchange or open string virtual pair production) in its Euclidean formulation using the scalar Polyakov action. This model has a number of phenomenologically successful results. The periodicity of a coordinate around the tube allows the introduction of a Matsubara time and therefore an effective temperature Teff on th…

Pole-skipping is a recently discovered signature of many-body quantum chaos in collective energy dynamics. It establishes a precise connection between resummed, all-order hydrodynamics and the underlying microscopic chaos. In this paper, we demonstrate the existence of pole-skipping in holographic conformal field theories with higher-derivative gravity duals. In particular, we first consider Einstein-Hilbert gravity deformed by curvature-squared ($R^2$) corrections and then type IIB supergravity theory with the $α'^3 R^4$ term, where $α'$ is set by the length of the fundamental string. The for…
We discuss excitation of string oscillation modes by an initial singularity of inflation. The initial singularity of inflation is known to occur with a finite Hubble parameter, which is generally lower than the string scale, and hence it is not clear that stringy effects become significant around it. With the help of Penrose limit, we find that infinitely heavy oscillation modes get excited when a singularity is strong in the sense of Krolak's classification. We demonstrate that the initial singularities of Starobinsky and hill top inflation, assuming the slow roll inflation to the past infini…
We construct gravitational backgrounds dual to a family of field theories parameterized by a relevant coupling. They combine a non-trivial scalar field profile with a naked singularity. The naked singularity is necessary to preserve Lorentz invariance along the boundary directions. The singularity is however excised by introducing an infrared cutoff in the geometry. The holographic dictionary associated to the infrared boundary is developed. We implement quenches between two different values of the coupling. This requires considering time dependent boundary conditions for the scalar field both…
In dipole-dipole scattering at large rapidity χ={\rm ln}(s/s_0), the induced instanton on the string worldsheet carries entropy S_k=2(α_{Pk}-1)χwith α_{Pk}-1 the pomeron intercept for a dipole source of N-ality k. This stringy entropy is neither coherent nor thermal. We argue that it is released promptly over a time t_R\approx (b / χ)^3 / (4 α') with α'/2 the pomeron slope and b the impact parameter. This stringy entropy may explain the 3/2 jump in the total charged multiplicities at about 10 participants reported over a wide range of collider energies by PHOBOS. We predict the charged multipl…
We study the evolution of holographic complexity in various AdS/CFT models containing cosmological crunch singularities. We find that a notion of complexity measured by extremal bulk volumes tends to decrease as the singularity is approached in CFT time, suggesting that the corresponding quantum states have simpler entanglement structure at the singularity.
We study the effects produced by D-brane instantons on the holomorphic quantities of a D-brane gauge theory at an orbifold singularity. These effects are not limited to reproducing the well known contributions of the gauge theory instantons but also generate extra terms in the superpotential or the prepotential. On these brane instantons there are some neutral fermionic zero-modes in addition to the ones expected from broken supertranslations. They are crucial in correctly reproducing effects which are dual to gauge theory instantons, but they may make some other interesting contributions vani…
Modeling QCD at large temperature with a simple holographic five dimensional theory encoding minimal breaking of conformality, allows for the calculation of all the transport coefficients, up to second order, in terms of a single parameter. In particular, the shear and bulk relaxation times are provided. The result follows by deforming the AdS background with a scalar dual to a marginally relevant operator, at leading order in the deformation parameter.
We study in detail the recently-found family of asymptotically AdS$_5\times S^5$ type IIB supergravity solutions dual to the $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ SYM theory with equal masses. The backgrounds exhibit a naked singularity and are labelled by a dimensionless parameter, $λ$, which is interpreted as the ratio of the gaugino condensate and the mass in the dual field theory. When $|λ|<1$ we show that the naked singularity is due to a smeared distribution of polarized $(p,q)$ five-branes. For this range of parameters we study the nature of the singularity using probe strings and show that the dual line o…
We continue the studies of our earlier proposal for an AdS/CFT correspondence for time-dependent supergravity backgrounds. We note that by performing a suitable change of variables, the dual super Yang-Mills theory lives on a flat base space, and the time-dependence of the supergravity background is entirely encoded in the time-dependent couplings (gauge and axionic) and their supersymmetric completion. This form of the SYM allows a detailed perturbative analysis to be performed. In particular the one-loop Wilsonian effective action of the boundary SYM theory is computed. By using the holograp…
We study holographic entanglement entropy in Gauss-Bonnet gravity following a global quench. It is known that in dynamical scenarios the entanglement entropy probe penetrates the apparent horizon. The goal of this work is to study how far behind the horizon can the entanglement probe reach in a Gauss-Bonnet theory. We find that the behavior is quite different depending on the sign of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling $λ_{GB}$. We show that for $λ_{GB} > 0$ the holographic entanglement entropy probe explores less of the spacetime behind the horizon than in Einstein gravity. On the other hand, for $λ_{G…
A cosmological model for the early time Universe is proposed. In this model, the Universe is a wandering brane moving in a warped throat of a Calabi-Yau space. A non-zero angular momentum induces a turning point in the brane trajectory, and leads to a bouncing cosmology as experienced by an observer living on the brane. The Universe undergoes a decelerated contraction followed by an accelerating expansion and no big-bang singularity. Although the number of e-folds of accelerated motion is low (less than 2), standard cosmological problems are not present in our model thanks to the absence of an…
We derive the spectrum of Kaluza-Klein descendants of string excitations on AdS_5 x S^5. String states are organized in long multiplets of the AdS supergroup SU(2,2|4,R) with a rich pattern of shortenings at the higher spin enhancement point λ=0. The string states holographically dual to the higher spin currents of SYM theory in the strict zero coupling limit are identified together with the corresponding Goldstone particles responsible for the Higgsing of the higher spin symmetry at λ\neq 0. Exploiting higher spin symmetry we propose a very simple yet effective mass formula and establish a on…
The Schwarzschild singularity is known to be classically unstable. We demonstrate a simple holographic consequence of this fact, focusing on a perturbation that is uniform in boundary space and time. Deformation of the thermal state of the dual CFT by a relevant operator triggers a nonzero temperature holographic renormalization group flow in the bulk. This flow continues smoothly through the horizon and, at late interior time, deforms the Schwarzschild singularity into a more general Kasner universe. We show that the deformed near-singularity, trans-horizon Kasner exponents determine specific…
The purpose of this review is to provide basic ingredients of holographic QCD to non-experts in string theory and to summarize its interesting achievements in nuclear and hadron physics. We focus on results from a less stringy bottom-up approach and review a stringy top-down model with some calculational details.
In this paper, we relate the complexity for a holographic state to a simple gravitational object of which the growth rate at late times is equal to temperature times black hole entropy. We show that if this is correct, the thermodynamics of AdS black holes implies that for generic holographic states dual to static AdS black holes, the complexity growth rate at late times will saturate the Lloyd bound at high temperature limit. In particular, for AdS planar black holes, the result holds at lower temperatures as well. We conjecture that the complexity growth is bounded above as $d\mathcal{C}/dt\…
In the presence of a scalar hair perturbation, the Cauchy horizon of a Reissner-Nordström black hole disappears and is replaced by the rapid collapse of the Einstein-Rosen bridge, which leads to a Kasner singularity [1,2]. We study the time-dependence of holographic complexity, both for the volume and for the action proposals, in a class of models with hairy black holes. Volume complexity can only probe a portion of the black hole interior that remains far away from the Kasner singularity. We provide numerical evidence that the Lloyd bound is satisfied by the volume complexity rate in all the …
In this paper, following the basic prescriptions of Gauge/String duality, we perform a strong coupling computation on \textit{classical} two point correlation between \textit{local} (single trace) operators in a gauge theory dual to $ κ$-deformed $ AdS_{3}\times S^{3}$ background. Our construction is based on the prescription that relates every local operator in a gauge theory to that with the (semi)classical string states propagating within the \textit{physical} region surrounded by the holographic screen in deformed $ AdS_3 $. In our analysis, we treat strings as being that of a point like o…
We consider the problem of constructing a non-singular inflationary universe in stringy gravity via branch changing, from a previously superexponentially expanding phase to an FRW-like phase. Our approach is based on the phase space analysis of the dynamics, and we obtain a no-go theorem which rules out the efficient scenario of branch changing catalyzed by dilaton potential and stringy fluid sources. We furthermore consider the effects of string-loop corrections to the gravitational action in the form recently suggested by Damour and Polyakov. These corrections also fail to produce the desire…
We propose a new holographic C-function for the accelerating universe defined in the stringy frame motivated mainly by the fact that the number of degrees of freedom should be infinite for a physical system of infinite size. This is the generalization of Strominger's recent proposal of the holographic C-function to the asymptotically non-de Sitter universe. We find that the corresponding C-theorem holds true if the universe accelerates toward the weak coupling regime driven by the exponential dilaton potential. It also holds in other simple cases.
We study the first-order $α'$ corrections to the singular 4-dimensional massless stringy black holes studied in the nineties in the context of the Heterotic Superstring. We show that the $α'$ corrections not only induce a non-vanishing mass and give rise to an event horizon, but also eliminate the singularity giving rise to a regular spacetime whose global structure includes further asymptotically flat regions in which the spacetime's mass is positive or negative. We study the timelike and null geodesics and their effective potential, showing that the spacetime is geodesically complete. We dis…
In a seminal paper by Brown et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, no. 19, 191301 (2016)] a new conjecture was proposed, namely it was argued that the quantum complexity of a holographic state is equal to action of a Wheeler-DeWitt patch in the late time limit suggesting that the fastest computer in nature are the black holes. Motivated by this conjecture, in the present paper, we study the action growth rate for different types of black holes such as dyonic, nonlinear charge, stringy hair, black hole with a global monopole and a cosmic string. In general we find that action growth rates of the Wheeler…
Considering a thermal state of the dual CFT with a uniform deformation by a scalar operator, we study a holographic renormalization group flow at nonzero temperature in the bulk described by the Einstein-scalar field theory with the self-interaction term $λϕ^4$ in asymptotic anti-de Sitter spacetime. We show that the holographic flow with the self-interaction term could run smoothly through the event horizon of a black hole and deform the Schwarzschild singularity to a Kasner universe at late times. Furthermore, we also study the effect of the scalar self-interaction on the deformed near-singu…
We further explore the quantum dynamics near past cosmological singularities in anisotropic Kasner-AdS solutions using gauge/gravity duality. The dual description of the bulk evolution involves N=4 super Yang-Mills on the contracting branch of an anisotropic de Sitter space and is well defined. We compute two-point correlators of Yang-Mills operators of large dimensions using spacelike geodesics anchored on the boundary. The correlator between two points separated in a direction with negative Kasner exponent p always exhibits a pole at horizon scales, in any dimension, which we interpret as a …
Critical phenomena in gravitational collapse exhibit the universal features of self-similarity, critical scaling, and the appearance of a naked singularity. We study critical collapse in AdS, focusing on holographic field theory observables. We demonstrate that the echoing period, critical exponent, and signatures of the naked singularity can all be extracted from the holographic stress tensor.
Charged black holes in anti-de Sitter space become unstable to forming charged scalar hair at low temperatures $T < T_\text{c}$. This phenomenon is a holographic realization of superconductivity. We look inside the horizon of these holographic superconductors and find intricate dynamical behavior. The spacetime ends at a spacelike Kasner singularity, and there is no Cauchy horizon. Before reaching the singularity, there are several intermediate regimes which we study both analytically and numerically. These include strong Josephson oscillations in the condensate and possible 'Kasner inversions…
