We prove that, defined with respect to versal flags, the product of two relative Bott-Samelson varieties over the flag bundle is a resolution of singularities of a relative Richardson variety. This result generalizes Brion's resolution of singularities of Richardson varieties to the relative setting. It reflects the phenomenon that the local geometry of a relative Richardson variety is completely governed by the two intersecting relative Schubert varieties, studied by Chan-Pflueger. We also prove an analogous theorem in the case of relative Grassmannian Richardson varieties, thereby furnishing a resolution of singularities for the Brill-Noether variety with imposed ramification on twice-marked elliptic curves.
We use the toric degeneration of Bott-Samelson varieties and the description of cohomolgy of line bundles on toric varieties to deduce vanishings results for the cohomology of lines bundles on Bott-Samelson varieties.
We give a description of the moment graph for Bott-Samelson varieties in arbitrary Lie type. We use this, along with curve neighborhoods and explicit moduli space computations, to compute a presentation for the small quantum cohomology ring of a particular Bott-Samelson variety in Type $A$. We also show the conjecture $\mathcal{O}$ of Galkin, Golyshev, and Iritani holds for that Bott-Samelson variety.
By using row convex tableaux, we study the section rings of Bott-Samelson varieties of type A. We obtain flat deformations and standard monomial type bases of the section rings. In a separate section, we investigate a three dimensional Bott-Samelson variety in detail and compute its Hilbert polynomial and toric degenerations.
We investigate families of minimal rational curves on Schubert varieties, their Bott-Samelson desingularizations, and their generalizations constructed by Nicolas Perrin in the minuscule case. In particular, we describe the minimal families on small resolutions of minuscule Schubert varieties.
We use Bott-Samelson resolutions of Schubert varieties in Grassmannians along with equiariant localization techniques to show that the factorial Schur functions and the factorial Grothendieck polynomials represent Schubert classes in equivariant cohomology and equivariant K-theory respectively.
In this paper we construct a degeneration of Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen varieties to toric varieties in an algebraic family and study the geometry of the resulting toric varieties. We give a natural set of torus invariant curves that generate the Chow group of $1$-cycles of the limiting toric variety and express the ample cone of this toric variety as a sub-cone of the ample cone of the corresponding Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety. We also give a description of Extremal and Mori rays and determine when this toric variety is Fano.
We compute the cone of effective divisors on a Bott-Samelson variety corresponding to an arbitrary sequence of simple roots. The main tool is a general result concerning effective cones of certain $B$-equivariant $\mathbb{P}^1$ bundles. As an application, we compute the cone of effective codimension-two cycles on Bott-Samelson varieties corresponding to reduced words. We also obtain an auxiliary result giving criteria for a Bott-Samelson variety to contain a dense $B$-orbit, and we construct desingularizations of intersections of Schubert varieties. An appendix exhibits an explicit divisor sho…
We construct a basis of the equivariant $K$-theory of Bott towers, and we describe precisely the multiplicative structure of these algebras. We deduce similar results for Bott-Samelson varieties. Thanks to the link between flag varieties and Bott-Samelson varieties, we give a method to compute the structure constants of the equivariant $K$-theory of flag varieties in the basis constructed by Kostant and Kumar.
We explore the relationship between two desingularization techniques for Schubert varieties. The Bott-Samelson resolution is the more common of the two, but it fails to encompass many properties that Hironaka resolutions provide, in particular, being an isomorphism over the smooth locus. Using a computer search, a list of cases where Bott-Samelson resolutions having this "strictness" property is compiled for the $n=5,6$ cases. A conjecture based on these results is formulated and is subsequently verified for $n=7,8$. A comparison between Bott-Samelson resolutions and blow-ups is also provided.
Over a field of positive characteristic, a semisimple algebraic group $G$ may have some nonreduced parabolic subgroup $P$. In this paper, we study the Schubert and Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen (BSDH) varieties of $G/P$, with $P$ nonreduced, when the base field is perfect. It is shown that in general the Schubert and BSDH varieties of such a $G/P$ are not normal, and the projection of the BSDH variety onto the Schubert variety has nonreduced fibers at closed points. When the base field is finite, the generalized convolution morphisms between BSDH varieties are also studied. It is shown that th…
The aim of this text is to give an explicit formula for the restriction to fixed points of a basis of the equivariant K-theory of the flag varieties and of the Bott-Samelson varieties.
In the framework of the problem of characterizing complete flag manifolds by their contractions, the complete flags of type $F_4$ and $G_2$ satisfy the property that any possible tower of Bott-Samelson varieties dominating them birationally deforms in a nontrivial moduli. In this paper we illustrate the fact that, at least in some cases, these deformations can be explained in terms of automorphisms of Schubert varieties, providing variations of certain isotropic structures on them. As a corollary, we provide a unified and completely algebraic proof of the characterization of complete flag mani…
We prove that on a Bott-Samelson variety $X$ every movable divisor is nef. This enables us to consider Zariski decompositions of effective divisors, which in turn yields a description of the Mori chamber decomposition of the effective cone. This amounts to information on all possible birational morphisms from $X$. Applying this result, we prove the rational polyhedrality of the global Newton-Okounkov body of a Bott-Samelson variety with respect to the so called `horizontal' flag. In fact, we prove the stronger property of the finite generation of the corresponding global value semigroup.
We compute the Newton--Okounkov bodies of line bundles on a Bott--Samelson resolution of the complete flag variety of $GL_n$ for a geometric valuation coming from a flag of translated Schubert subvarieties. The Bott--Samelson resolution corresponds to the decomposition $(s_1)(s_2s_1)(s_3s_2s_1)(\ldots)(s_{n-1}\ldots s_1)$ of the longest element in the Weyl group, and the Schubert subvarieties correspond to the terminal subwords in this decomposition. We prove that the resulting Newton--Okounkov polytopes for semiample line bundles satisfy the additivity property with respect to the Minkowski s…
We study torus-equivariant vector bundles $E$ on a complex projective variety $X$ which is either a Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety or a wonderful compactification of a complex symmetric variety of minimal rank. We show that $E$ is nef (respectively, ample) if and only if its restriction to every torus--invariant curve in $X$ is nef (respectively, ample). We also compute the Seshadri constants $\varepsilon(E,x)$, where $x\, \in\, X$ is any point fixed by the action of a maximal torus.
We introduce the notion of flag Bott-Samelson variety as a generalization of Bott-Samelson variety and flag variety. Using a birational morphism from an appropriate Bott-Samelson variety to a flag Bott-Samelson variety, we compute Newton-Okounkov bodies of flag Bott-Samelson varieties as generalized string polytopes, which are applied to give polyhedral expressions for irreducible decompositions of tensor products of $G$-modules. Furthermore, we show that flag Bott-Samelson varieties are degenerated into flag Bott manifolds with higher rank torus actions, and find the Duistermaat-Heckman measu…
In this paper we study the geometry of toric degeneration of a Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen (BSDH) variety. We give some applications to BSDH varieties. Precisely, we classify Fano, weak Fano and log Fano BSDH varieties and their toric limits in Kac-Moody setting. We prove some vanishing theorems for the cohomology of tangent bundle (and line bundles) on BSDH varieties. We also recover the results in arXiv:1604.01998, by toric methods.
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group over the field of complex numbers. Fix a maximal torus $T$ and a Borel subgroup $B$ of $G$ containing $T$. Let $w$ be an element of the Weyl group $W$ of $G$, and let $Z(\tilde w)$ be the Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen (BSDH) variety corresponding to a reduced expression $\tilde w$ of $w$ with respect to the data $(G, B, T)$. In this article we give complete characterization of the expressions $\tilde w$ such that the corresponding BSDH variety $Z(\tilde w)$ is Fano or weak Fano. As a consequence we prove vanishing theorems of the cohomology of tangent bundle…
We obtain two combinatorial results: an equality of Weyl groups and an inequality of roots, in the setting of generalised Bott-Samelson resolutions of minuscule Schubert varieties. These results are used in the companion paper [BK19] to describe minimal rational curves on these resolutions, and their relation to lines on the Schubert varieties.
Let $G$ denote an adjoint semi-simple group over an algebraically closed field and $T$ a maximal torus of $G$. Following Contou-Carrère [CC], we consider the Bott-Samelson resolution of a Schubert variety as a variety of galleries in the building associated to the group $G$. We first determine a cellular decomposition of this variety analogous to the Bruhat decomposition of a Schubert variety and then we describe the fibre of this resolution above a $T-$fixed point.
We give a topological explanation of the main results of V.Shchigolev, Categories of Bott-Samelson Varieties, Algebras and Representation Theory, 23 (2), 349-391, 2020. To this end, we consider some subspaces of Bott-Samelson varieties invariant under the action of the maximal compact torus $K$ and study their topological and homological properties. Moreover, we describe multiplicative generators of the equivariant cohomologies of Bott-Samelson varieties.
We consider the T-equivariant cohomology of Bott-Samelson desingularisations of Schubert varieties in the flag manifold of a connected semi-simple complex algebraic group of adjoint type with maximal torus T. We construct a combinatorially pure (in the sense of T. Braden and R. Macpherson) sheaf on the Bruhat graph of the associated Weyl group such that its global sections give the T-equivariant cohomology of our Bott-Samelson resolution.
We construct an explicit basis for the coordinate ring of the Bott-Samelson variety Z_i associated to G = GL(n) and an arbitrary sequence of simple reflections i. Our basis is parametrized by certain standard tableaux and generalizes the Standard Monomial basis for Schubert varieties. Our standard tableaux have a natural crystal graph structure.
We prove that the Gromov width of any Bott-Samelson variety birational to a Schubert variety and equipped with a rational Kähler form equals the symplectic area of a minimal curve. From this, we derive an estimate for the Seshadri constants of ample line bundles on Bott-Samelson varieties.
We describe, under certain conditions, the Newton-Okounkov body of a Bott-Samelson variety as a lattice polytope defined by an explicit list of inequalities. The valuation that we use to define the Newton-Okounkov body is different from that used previously in the literature. The polytope that arises is a special case of the Grossberg-Karshon twisted cubes studied by Grossberg and Karshon in connection to character formulae for irreducible $G$-representations and also studied previously by the authors in relation to certain toric varieties associated to Bott-Samelson varieties.
Let $G$ be a semi-simple simply connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of arbitrary characteristic. Let $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing a maximal torus $T$ of $G.$ Let $W$ be the Weyl group of $G$ with respect to $T$. For an arbitrary sequence $w=(s_{i_{1}},s_{i_{2}},\ldots, s_{i_{r}})$ of simple reflections in $W,$ let $Z_{w}$ be the Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety (BSDH-variety for short) corresponding to $w.$ Let $\widetilde{Z_{w}}:=G\times^{B}Z_{w}$ denote the fibre bundle over $G/B$ with the fibre over $B/B$ is $Z_{w}.$ In this article, we give ne…
S.~Elnitsky (1997) gave an elegant bijection between rhombic tilings of $2n$-gons and commutation classes of reduced words in the symmetric group on $n$ letters. P.~Magyar (1998) found an important construction of the Bott-Samelson varieties introduced by H.C.~Hansen (1973) and M.~Demazure (1974). We explain a natural connection between S.~Elnitsky's and P.~Magyar's results. This suggests using tilings to encapsulate Bott-Samelson data (in type $A$). It also indicates a geometric perspective on S.~Elnitsky's combinatorics. We also extend this construction by assigning desingularizations to the…
A Newton-Okounkov convex body is a convex body constructed from a projective variety with a valuation on its homogeneous coordinate ring; this generalizes a Newton polytope for a toric variety. This convex body has various kinds of information about the original projective variety; for instance, Kaveh showed that the string polytopes from representation theory are examples of Newton-Okounkov bodies for Schubert varieties. In this paper, we extend the notion of string polytopes for Demazure modules to generalized Demazure modules, and prove that the resulting generalized string polytopes are id…
We give a new construction of the Bott-Samelson variety $Z$ as the closure of a $B$-orbit in a product of flag varieties $(G/B)^l$. This also gives an embedding of the projective coordinate ring of the variety into the function ring of a Borel subgroup: $\CC[Z] \subset \CC[B]$. In the case of the general linear group $G = GL(n)$, this identifies $Z$ as a configuration variety of multiple flags subject to certain inclusion conditions, closely related to the the matrix factorizations of Berenstein, Fomin and Zelevinsky. As an application, we give a geometric proof of the theorem of Kraskiewicz a…
In this paper, we construct stable Bott--Samelson classes in the projective limit of the algebraic cobordism rings of full flag varieties, upon an initial choice of a reduced word in a given dimension. Each stable Bott--Samelson class is represented by a bounded formal power series modulo symmetric functions in positive degree. We make some explicit computations for those power series in the case of infinitesimal cohomology. We also obtain a formula of the restriction of Bott--Samelson classes to smaller flag varieties.
For any Bott-Samelson resolution $q_{I}:\hat{X_{I}}\rightarrow G/B$ of the flag variety $G/B$, and any torus equivariant oriented cohomology $h_T$, we compute the restriction formula of certain basis $η_L$ of $h_T(\hat{X_{I}})$ determined by the projective bundle formula. As an application, we show that $h_T(\hat{X_{I}})$ embeds into the equivariant oriented cohomology of $T$-fixed points, and the image can be characterized by using the Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson (GKM) description. Furthermore, we compute the push-forward of the basis $η_L$ onto $h_T(G/B)$, and their restriction formula.
Let $G=PSp(2n, \mathbb C)(n\geq 3)$ and $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing a maximal torus $T$ of $G$. Let $w$ be an element of the Weyl group $W$ and $X(w)$ be the Schubert variety in the flag variety $G/B$ corresponding to $w$. Let $Z(w,\underline i)$ be the Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety (the desingularization of $X(w)$) corresponding to a reduced expression $\underline i$ of $w$. In this article, we study the cohomology groups of the tangent bundle on $Z(w_0, \underline i)$, where $w_0$ is the longest element of the Weyl group $W$. We describe all the reduced expressions $\un…
We construct the RR varieties as the fiber products of Bott-Samelson varieties over Richardson varieties. We study their homogeneous coordinate rings and standard monomial theory.
We use the theory of Mori dream spaces to prove that the global Okounkov body of a Bott-Samelson variety with respect to a natural flag of subvarieties is rational polyhedral. In fact, we prove more generally that this holds for any Mori dream space which admits a flag of Mori dream spaces satisfying a certain regularity condition. As a corollary, Okounkov bodies of effective line bundles over Schubert varieties are shown to be rational polyhedral. In particular, it follows that the global Okounkov body of a flag variety $G/B$ is rational polyhedral. As an application we show that the asymptot…
Let $T$ be a maximal torus of a semisimple complex algebraic group, $\mathrm{BS}(s)$ be the Bott-Samelson variety for a sequence of simple reflections $s$ and $\mathrm{BS}(s)^T$ be the set of $T$-fixed points of $\mathrm{BS}(s)$. We prove the tensor product decompositions for the image of the restriction $H^\bullet_T(\mathrm{BS}(s),k)\to H_T^\bullet(X,k)$, where $X\subset\mathrm{BS}(s)^T$ is defined by some special not overlapping equations $γ_iγ_{i+1}\cdotsγ_j=w_{i,j}$ with right-hand sides belonging to the Weyl group.
We consider all Bott-Samelson varieties ${\rm BS}(s)$ for a fixed connected semisimple complex algebraic group with maximal torus $T$ as the class of objects of some category. The class of morphisms of this category is an extension of the class of canonical (inserting the neutral element) morphisms ${\rm BS}(s)\hookrightarrow{\rm BS}(s')$, where $s$ is a subsequence of $s'$. Every morphism of the new category induces a map between the $T$-fixed points but not necessarily between the whole varieties. We construct a contravariant functor from this new category to the category of graded $H^\bulle…
We construct combinatorial bases of the $T$-equivariant ($T$ is the maximal torus) cohomology $H^\bullet_T(Σ,k)$ of the Bott-Samelson variety $Σ$ under some mild restrictions on the field of coefficients $k$. This bases allow us to prove the surjectivity of the restrictions $H^\bullet_T(Σ,k)\to H^\bullet_T(π^{-1}(x),k)$ and $H^\bullet_T(Σ,k)\to H^\bullet_T(Σ\setminusπ^{-1}(x),k)$, where $π:Σ\to G/B$ is the canonical resolution. In fact, we also construct bases of the targets of these restrictions by picking up certain subsets of certain bases of $H^\bullet_T(Σ,k)$ and restricting them to $π^{-…
Let $C$ be a symmetrizable generalized Cartan matrix. We introduce four different versions of double Bott-Samelson cells for every pair of positive braids in the generalized braid group associated to $C$. We prove that the decorated double Bott-Samelson cells are smooth affine varieties, whose coordinate rings are naturally isomorphic to upper cluster algebras. We explicitly describe the Donaldson-Thomas transformations on double Bott-Samelson cells and prove that they are cluster transformations. As an application, we complete the proof of the Fock-Goncharov duality conjecture in these cases.…
Based on recent advances on the relation between geometry and representation theory, we propose a new approach to elliptic Schubert calculus. We study the equivariant elliptic characteristic classes of Schubert varieties of the generalized full flag variety $G/B$. For this first we need to twist the notion of elliptic characteristic class of Borisov-Libgober by a line bundle, and thus allow the elliptic classes to depend on extra variables. Using the Bott-Samelson resolution of Schubert varieties we prove a BGG-type recursion for the elliptic classes, and study the Hecke algebra of our ellipti…
Let $G$ be a simple, adjoint, algebraic group over the field of complex numbers, $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing a maximal torus $T$ of $G$, $w$ be an element of the Weyl group $W$ and $X(w)$ be the Schubert variety in $G/B$ corresponding to $w$. Let $Z(w,\underline i)$ be the Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety (the desingularization of the Schubert variety $X(w)$) corresponding to a reduced expression $\underline i$ of $w$. In this article, we compute the connected component $Aut^0(Z(w, \underline i))$ of the automorphism group of $Z(w,\underline i)$ containing the identity autom…

Let $G$ be a semisimple, simply connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We prove that the $\infty$-category of D-modules on the loop group of $G$ is equivalent to the monoidal colimit of the $\infty$-categories of D-modules on the standard parahoric subgroups. This also follows from arXiv:2009.10998, but the present paper gives a simpler proof. The idea is to develop a combinatorial model for the path space of a simplicial complex, in which 'paths' are sequences of adjacent simplices, and to use a generalized version of hyperdescent for D-modules. W…
Let $G=PSO(2n+1, \mathbb{C}) (n \ge 3)$ and $B$ be the Borel subgroup of $G$ containing maximal torus $T$ of $G.$ Let $w$ be an element of Weyl group $W$ and $X(w)$ be the Schubert variety in the flag variety $G/B$ corresponding to $w.$ Let $Z(w, \underline{i})$ be the Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety (the desingularization of $X(w)$) corresponding to a reduced expression $\underline{i}$ of $w.$ In this article, we study the cohomology modules of the tangent bundle on $Z(w_{0}, \underline{i}),$ where $w_{0}$ is the longest element of the Weyl group $W.$ We describe all the reduced express…
The main result of this note is that the toric degenerations of flag varieties associated to string polytopes and certain Bott-Samelson resolutions of flag varieties fit into a commutative diagram which gives a resolution of singularities of singular toric varieties corresponding to string polytopes. Our main tool is a result of Anderson which shows that the toric degenerations arising from Newton-Okounkov bodies are functorial in an appropriate sense. We also use results of Fujita which show that Newton-Okounkov bodies of Bott-Samelson varieties with respect to a certain valuation $ν_{max}$ c…
Following Contou-Carrere [CC], we consider the Bott-Samelson resolution of a Schubert variety as a variety of galleries in the Tits building associated to the situation. We prove that the rational smoothness of a Schubert variety can be expressed in terms of a subspace of the Zariski tangent space called, the combinatorial tangent space. For this, we use a characterization of rational smoothness of a Schubert variety introduced by Carrell and Peterson [CP].
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of adjoint type over $\mathbb{C},$ whose root system is of type $F_{4}.$ Let $T$ be a maximal torus of $G$ and $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing $T.$ Let $w$ be an element of Weyl group $W$ and $X(w)$ be the Schubert variety in the flag variety $G/B$ corresponding to $w.$ Let $Z(w, \underline{i})$ be the Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety (the desingularization of $X(w)$) corresponding to a reduced expression $\underline{i}$ of $w.$ In this article, we study the cohomology modules of the tangent bundle on $Z(w_{0}, \underline{i}),$ where $w_{0}$ i…
We define the Barbasch-Evens-Magyar varieties. We show they are isomorphic to the smooth varieties defined in [D.~Barbasch-S.~Evens '94] that map generically finitely to symmetric orbit closures, thereby giving resolutions of singularities in certain cases. Our definition parallels [P.~Magyar '98]'s construction of the Bott-Samelson varieties [H.~C.~Hansen '73, M.~Demazure '74]. From this alternative viewpoint, one deduces a graphical description in type $A$, stratification into closed subvarieties of the same kind, and determination of the torus-fixed points. Moreover, we explain how these ma…
We use incidence relations running in two directions in order to construct a Kempf-Laksov type resolution for any Schubert variety of the complete flag manifold but also an embedded resolution for any Schubert variety in the Grassmannian. These constructions are alternatives to the celebrated Bott-Samelson resolutions. The second process led to the introduction of W-flag varieties, algebro-geometric objects that interpolate between the standard flag manifolds and products of Grassmannians, but which are singular in general. The surprising simple desingularization of a particular such type of v…
Bott-Samelson varieties are a twisted product of $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^1$'s with a map into $G/B$. These varieties are mostly studied in the case in which the map into $G/B$ is birational to the image; however in this paper we study a fiber of this map when it is not birational. We will see that in some cases the general fiber, which we christen a brick manifold, is a toric variety. In order to do so we use the moment map of a Bott-Samelson variety to translate this problem into one in terms of the "subword complexes" of Knutson and Miller. Pilaud and Stump realized certain subword complexes a…
We consider a desingularization Gamma of a Richardson variety X_w^v=X_w \cap X^v in the flag variety Fl(n)=GL(n)/B, obtained as a fibre of a projection from a certain Bott-Samelson variety Z. We then construct a basis of the homogeneous coordinate ring of Gamma inside Z, indexed by combinatorial objects which we call w_0-standard tableaux.
We prove that the prime torsion in the local integral intersection cohomology of Schubert varieties in the flag variety of the general linear group grows exponentially in the rank. The idea of the proof is to find a highly singular point in a Schubert variety and calculate the Euler class of the normal bundle to the (miraculously smooth) fibre in a particular Bott-Samelson resolution. The result is a geometric version of an earlier result established using Soergel bimodule techniques.
