We give a topological explanation of the main results of V.Shchigolev, Categories of Bott-Samelson Varieties, Algebras and Representation Theory, 23 (2), 349-391, 2020. To this end, we consider some subspaces of Bott-Samelson varieties invariant under the action of the maximal compact torus $K$ and study their topological and homological properties. Moreover, we describe multiplicative generators of the equivariant cohomologies of Bott-Samelson varieties.
We describe, under certain conditions, the Newton-Okounkov body of a Bott-Samelson variety as a lattice polytope defined by an explicit list of inequalities. In this paper, we construct stable Bott--Samelson classes in the projective limit of the algebraic cobordism rings of full flag varieties, upon an initial choice of a reduced word in a given dimension. Each stable Bott--Samelson class is represented by a bounded formal power series modulo symmetric functions in positive degree. We make some explicit computations for those power series in the case of infinitesimal cohomology. We also obtain a formula of the restriction of Bott--Samelson classes to smaller flag varieties.

We explore the relationship between two desingularization techniques for Schubert varieties. The Bott-Samelson resolution is the more common of the two, but it fails to encompass many properties that Hironaka resolutions provide, in particular, being an isomorphism over the smooth locus. In this paper we study the geometry of toric degeneration of a Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen (BSDH) variety. We give some applications to BSDH varieties. Precisely, we classify Fano, weak Fano and log Fano BSDH varieties and their toric limits in Kac-Moody setting. We prove some vanishing theorems for the cohomology of tangent bundle (and line bundles) on BSDH varieties. We also recover the results in arXiv:1604.01998, by toric methods.

We give an explicit construction for the varieties $\SF^a_λ$ and construct their desingularizations, similar to the Bott-Samelson resolutions in the classical case. We consider a desingularization Gamma of a Richardson variety X_w^v=X_w \cap X^v in the flag variety Fl(n)=GL(n)/B, obtained as a fibre of a projection from a certain Bott-Samelson variety Z. We then construct a basis of the homogeneous coordinate ring of Gamma inside Z, indexed by combinatorial objects which we call w_0-standard tableaux.
