Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of adjoint type over $\mathbb{C},$ whose root system is of type $F_{4}.$ Let $T$ be a maximal torus of $G$ and $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing $T.$ Let $w$ be an element of Weyl group $W$ and $X(w)$ be the Schubert variety in the flag variety $G/B$ corresponding to $w.$ Let $Z(w, \underline{i})$ be the Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety (the desingularization of $X(w)$) corresponding to a reduced expression $\underline{i}$ of $w.$ In this article, we study the cohomology modules of the tangent bundle on $Z(w_{0}, \underline{i}),$ where $w_{0}$ is the longest element of the Weyl group $W.$ We describe all the reduced expressions of $w_{0}$ in terms of a Coxeter element such that $Z(w_{0}, \underline{i})$ is rigid (see Theorem 8.1). Further, if $G$ is of type $G_{2},$ there is no reduced expression $\underline{i}$ of $w_{0}$ for which $Z(w_{0}, \underline{i})$ is rigid (see Theorem 8.2).
Let $G=PSO(2n+1, \mathbb{C}) (n \ge 3)$ and $B$ be the Borel subgroup of $G$ containing maximal torus $T$ of $G.$ Let $w$ be an element of Weyl group $W$ and $X(w)$ be the Schubert variety in the flag variety $G/B$ corresponding to $w.$ Let $Z(w, \underline{i})$ be the Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety (the desingularization of $X(w)$) corresponding to a reduced expression $\underline{i}$ of $w.$ In this article, we study the cohomology modules of the tangent bundle on $Z(w_{0}, \underline{i}),$ where $w_{0}$ is the longest element of the Weyl group $W.$ We describe all the reduced express…
A Newton-Okounkov convex body is a convex body constructed from a projective variety with a valuation on its homogeneous coordinate ring; this generalizes a Newton polytope for a toric variety. This convex body has various kinds of information about the original projective variety; for instance, Kaveh showed that the string polytopes from representation theory are examples of Newton-Okounkov bodies for Schubert varieties. In this paper, we extend the notion of string polytopes for Demazure modules to generalized Demazure modules, and prove that the resulting generalized string polytopes are id…
In this paper we construct a degeneration of Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen varieties to toric varieties in an algebraic family and study the geometry of the resulting toric varieties. We give a natural set of torus invariant curves that generate the Chow group of $1$-cycles of the limiting toric variety and express the ample cone of this toric variety as a sub-cone of the ample cone of the corresponding Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety. We also give a description of Extremal and Mori rays and determine when this toric variety is Fano.
In this paper we study the geometry of toric degeneration of a Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen (BSDH) variety. We give some applications to BSDH varieties. Precisely, we classify Fano, weak Fano and log Fano BSDH varieties and their toric limits in Kac-Moody setting. We prove some vanishing theorems for the cohomology of tangent bundle (and line bundles) on BSDH varieties. We also recover the results in arXiv:1604.01998, by toric methods.
Over a field of positive characteristic, a semisimple algebraic group $G$ may have some nonreduced parabolic subgroup $P$. In this paper, we study the Schubert and Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen (BSDH) varieties of $G/P$, with $P$ nonreduced, when the base field is perfect. It is shown that in general the Schubert and BSDH varieties of such a $G/P$ are not normal, and the projection of the BSDH variety onto the Schubert variety has nonreduced fibers at closed points. When the base field is finite, the generalized convolution morphisms between BSDH varieties are also studied. It is shown that th…
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group over the field of complex numbers. Fix a maximal torus $T$ and a Borel subgroup $B$ of $G$ containing $T$. Let $w$ be an element of the Weyl group $W$ of $G$, and let $Z(\tilde w)$ be the Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen (BSDH) variety corresponding to a reduced expression $\tilde w$ of $w$ with respect to the data $(G, B, T)$. In this article we give complete characterization of the expressions $\tilde w$ such that the corresponding BSDH variety $Z(\tilde w)$ is Fano or weak Fano. As a consequence we prove vanishing theorems of the cohomology of tangent bundle…
Let $G=PSp(2n, \mathbb C)(n\geq 3)$ and $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing a maximal torus $T$ of $G$. Let $w$ be an element of the Weyl group $W$ and $X(w)$ be the Schubert variety in the flag variety $G/B$ corresponding to $w$. Let $Z(w,\underline i)$ be the Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety (the desingularization of $X(w)$) corresponding to a reduced expression $\underline i$ of $w$. In this article, we study the cohomology groups of the tangent bundle on $Z(w_0, \underline i)$, where $w_0$ is the longest element of the Weyl group $W$. We describe all the reduced expressions $\un…
Let $G$ be a semi-simple simply connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of arbitrary characteristic. Let $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing a maximal torus $T$ of $G.$ Let $W$ be the Weyl group of $G$ with respect to $T$. For an arbitrary sequence $w=(s_{i_{1}},s_{i_{2}},\ldots, s_{i_{r}})$ of simple reflections in $W,$ let $Z_{w}$ be the Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety (BSDH-variety for short) corresponding to $w.$ Let $\widetilde{Z_{w}}:=G\times^{B}Z_{w}$ denote the fibre bundle over $G/B$ with the fibre over $B/B$ is $Z_{w}.$ In this article, we give ne…
Let $G$ be a simple, adjoint, algebraic group over the field of complex numbers, $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing a maximal torus $T$ of $G$, $w$ be an element of the Weyl group $W$ and $X(w)$ be the Schubert variety in $G/B$ corresponding to $w$. Let $Z(w,\underline i)$ be the Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety (the desingularization of the Schubert variety $X(w)$) corresponding to a reduced expression $\underline i$ of $w$. In this article, we compute the connected component $Aut^0(Z(w, \underline i))$ of the automorphism group of $Z(w,\underline i)$ containing the identity autom…
S.~Elnitsky (1997) gave an elegant bijection between rhombic tilings of $2n$-gons and commutation classes of reduced words in the symmetric group on $n$ letters. P.~Magyar (1998) found an important construction of the Bott-Samelson varieties introduced by H.C.~Hansen (1973) and M.~Demazure (1974). We explain a natural connection between S.~Elnitsky's and P.~Magyar's results. This suggests using tilings to encapsulate Bott-Samelson data (in type $A$). It also indicates a geometric perspective on S.~Elnitsky's combinatorics. We also extend this construction by assigning desingularizations to the…
We study torus-equivariant vector bundles $E$ on a complex projective variety $X$ which is either a Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety or a wonderful compactification of a complex symmetric variety of minimal rank. We show that $E$ is nef (respectively, ample) if and only if its restriction to every torus--invariant curve in $X$ is nef (respectively, ample). We also compute the Seshadri constants $\varepsilon(E,x)$, where $x\, \in\, X$ is any point fixed by the action of a maximal torus.
We consider a natural basis of the Iwahori fixed vectors in the Whittaker model of an unramified principal series representation of a split semisimple p- adic group, indexed by the Weyl group. We show that the elements of this basis may be computed from one another by applying Demazure-Lusztig operators. The precise identities involve correction terms, which may be calculated by a combinatorial algorithm that is identical to the computation of the fibers of the Bott-Samelson resolution of a Schubert variety. The Demazure-Lusztig operators satisfy the braid and quadratic relations satisfied by …
We define the Barbasch-Evens-Magyar varieties. We show they are isomorphic to the smooth varieties defined in [D.~Barbasch-S.~Evens '94] that map generically finitely to symmetric orbit closures, thereby giving resolutions of singularities in certain cases. Our definition parallels [P.~Magyar '98]'s construction of the Bott-Samelson varieties [H.~C.~Hansen '73, M.~Demazure '74]. From this alternative viewpoint, one deduces a graphical description in type $A$, stratification into closed subvarieties of the same kind, and determination of the torus-fixed points. Moreover, we explain how these ma…
We give a new construction of the Bott-Samelson variety $Z$ as the closure of a $B$-orbit in a product of flag varieties $(G/B)^l$. This also gives an embedding of the projective coordinate ring of the variety into the function ring of a Borel subgroup: $\CC[Z] \subset \CC[B]$. In the case of the general linear group $G = GL(n)$, this identifies $Z$ as a configuration variety of multiple flags subject to certain inclusion conditions, closely related to the the matrix factorizations of Berenstein, Fomin and Zelevinsky. As an application, we give a geometric proof of the theorem of Kraskiewicz a…
We construct explicitly the normalisation of the Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen compactification of Deligne-Lusztig varieties $X(w)$ in their covering $Y(w)$: we retrieve a result by Deligne-Lusztig about the local monodromy around the divisors of the compactification.

Let $\Fl^a_\la$ be the PBW degeneration of the flag varieties of type $A_{n-1}$. These varieties are singular and are acted upon with the degenerate Lie group $SL_n^a$. We prove that $\Fl^a_\la$ have rational singularities, are normal and locally complete intersections, and construct a desingularization $R_\la$ of $\Fl^a_\la$. The varieties $R_\la$ can be viewed as towers of successive $\bP^1$-fibrations, thus providing an analogue of the classical Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen desingularization. We prove that the varieties $R_\la$ are Frobenius split. This gives us Frobenius splitting for the…
