The proton radiative capture $^{12,13}$C$(p,γ)$ reactions at astrophysical energies, key processes in the CNO cycle, are revisited in the potential model with the proton-nucleus potential for both the scattering and bound states obtained in the folding model, using a realistic density dependent nucleon-nucleon interaction. For the consistency, this same folding model is also used to calculate the optical potential of the elastic $p+^{12,13}$C scattering at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The folded $p+^{12,13}$C optical potentials are shown to account well for both the elastic $p+^{12,13}$C3 scattering and astrophysical $S$ factors of the radiative capture $^{12,13}$C$(p,γ)$ reactions.
Optical model potentials for elastic nucleon nucleus scattering are calculated for a number of target nuclides from a full-folding integral of two different realistic target density matrices together with full off-shell nucleon-nucleon t-matrices derived from two different Bonn meson exchange models. Elastic proton and neutron scattering observables calculated from these full-folding optical potentials are compared to those obtained from `optimum factorized' approximations in the energy regime between 65 and 400 MeV projectile energy. The optimum factorized form is found to provide a good appr…
The folding model analysis of the elastic $α+ α$ scattering at the incident energies below the reaction threshold of 34.7 MeV (in the lab system) has been done using the well-tested density dependent versions of the M3Y interaction and realistic choices for the $^4$He density. Because the absorption is negligible at the energies below the reaction threshold, we were able to probe the $α+ α$ optical potential at low energies quite unambiguously and found that the $α+ α$ overlap density used to construct the density dependence of the M3Y interaction is strongly distorted by the Pauli blocking. T…
The radiative thermal neutron capture cross sections over the range of thermal energies from 1 keV to 1 MeV are studied in statistical Hauser-Feshbach formalism. The optical model potential is constructed by folding the density dependent M3Y nucleon-nucleon interaction with radial matter densities of target nuclei obtained from relativistic-mean-field (RMF) theory. The standard nuclear reaction code TALYS1.8 is used for calculation of cross sections. The nuclei studied in the present work reside near the $Z=28$ proton shell closure and are of astrophysical interests taking part in p-, s-, and …
The experimental data on elastic and inelastic scattering of 270 MeV 3He particles to several low lying states in 90Zr, 116Sn and 208Pb are analyzed within the double folding model (DFM). Fermi density distribution (FDD) of target nuclei is used to obtain real potentials with different powers. DF results are introduced into modified DWUCK4 code to calculate the elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections. Two choices of potentials form factors; Woods Saxon (WS) and Woods Saxon Squared (WS2) for real potential are used, while the imaginary part is taken as phenomenological Woods Saxon (PWS)…
The folding formalism for the nucleon-nucleus optical potential and inelastic form factor is applied to study elastic and inelastic proton scattering on 30-40S isotopes. A recently developed realistic density dependent M3Y interaction, well tested in the folding analysis of nucleus-nucleus elastic and inelastic scattering, is used as effective NN interaction. The nuclear ground state and transition densities (for the 2+ excitations in Sulfur isotopes) are obtained in the Hartree-Fock-BCS and QRPA approaches, respectively. The best fit ratios of transition moments Mn/Mp for the lowest 2+ states…
Based on the extended optical model approach in which the polarization potential is decomposed into direct reaction (DR) and fusion parts, simultaneous $χ^{2}$ analyses are performed for elastic scattering and fusion cross section data for the $^{6}$Li+$^{208}$Pb system at near-Coulomb-barrier energies. A folding potential is used as the bare potential. It is found that the real part of the resultant DR part of the polarization potential is repulsive, which is consistent with the results from the Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel (CDCC) calculations and the normalization factors needed for…
In the framework of the double folding model, we used the α+2n and di-triton configurations for the nuclear matter density of the 6He nucleus to generate the real part of the optical potential for the system 6He+12C. As an alternative, we also use the high energy approximation to generate the optical potential for the same system. The derived potentials are employed to analyze the elastic scattering differential cross section at energies of 38.3, 41.6 and 82.3 MeV/nucleon. For the imaginary part of the potential we adopt the squared Woods-Saxon form. The obtained results are compared with the …
Simultaneous $χ^{2}$ analyses are performed for elastic scattering and fusion cross section data for the $^{12}$C+$^{208}$Pb system at near-Coulomb-barrier energies by using the extended optical model approach in which the polarization potential is decomposed into direct reaction (DR) and fusion parts. Use is made of the double folding potential as a bare potential. It is found that the experimental elastic scattering and fusion data are well reproduced without introducing any normalization factor for the double folding potential and also that both DR and fusion parts of the polarization poten…
Based on the extended optical model with the double folding potential, in which the polarization potential is decomposed into direct reaction (DR) and fusion parts, simultaneous $χ^{2}$ analyses are performed of elastic scattering and fusion cross section data for the $^{9}$Be+$^{28}$Si, $^{144}$Sm, and $^{208}$Pb systems at near-Coulomb-barrier energies. We find that the real part of the resultant DR part of the polarization potential is systematically repulsive for all the targets considered, which is consistent with the results deduced from the Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel (CDCC) c…
The averaged effective two-body interaction (\textit{AEI}) which can be generated through the lowest order constrained variational (\textit{LOCV}) method for symmetric nuclear matter (\textit{SNM}) with the input \textit{Reid}68 nucleon-nucleon potential, is used as the effective nucleon-nucleon potential in the folding model to describe the heavy-ion (\textit{HI}) elastic scattering cross sections. The elastic scattering cross sections of $^{12}C-^{12}C$ and $^{16}O-^{16}O$ systems are calculated in the above frameworks. The results are compared with the corresponding calculations coming from…
Simultaneous $χ^{2}$ analyses previously made for elastic scattering and fusion cross section data for the $^{6}$Li+$^{208}$Pb system is extended to the $^{7}$Li+$^{208}$Pb system at near-Coulomb-barrier energies based on the extended optical model approach, in which the polarization potential is decomposed into direct reaction (DR) and fusion parts. Use is made of the double folding potential as a bare potential. It is found that the experimental elastic scattering and fusion data are well reproduced without introducing any normalization factor for the double folding potential and that both t…
Based on the mean-field determination of the single-particle energy in nuclear matter that contains naturally a rearrangement term (RT) implied by the Hugenholtz-van Hove theorem, the folding model of the nucleon optical potential (OP) is extended to take into account the RT using the effective, density dependent CDM3Yn interaction. With the exchange part of the nucleon folded OP treated exactly in the Hartree-Fock manner, a compact nonlocal version of the folding model is suggested in the present work to determine explicitly the isospin-dependent, nonlocal central term of the nucleon OP. To s…
Calculations of microscopic optical potentials (OP's) (their real and imaginary parts) are performed to analyze the $^6$He+p elastic scattering data at a few tens of MeV/nucleon (MeV/N). The OP's and the cross sections are calculated using three model densities of $^6$He. Effects of the regularization of the NN forces and their dependence on nuclear density are investigated. Also, the role of the spin-orbit terms and of the non-linearity in the calculations of the OP's, as well as effects of their renormalization are studied. The sensitivity of the cross sections to the nuclear densities was t…
We discuss optical potentials for the nuclear elastic scattering from a variational viewpoint. Density-dependence in the effective $N$-$N$ interaction leads to density rearrangement terms, in addition to the conventional folding term. Effects of the rearrangement on the $N$-$A$ optical potential are illustrated in the nuclear-matter limit. Closely relating to consistency with the saturation, the rearrangement appreciably improves the isoscalar optical potential depth over the previous folding model calculations. The rearrangement gives stronger effects as the density grows. We also present rea…
Elastic scattering observables (differential cross section and analyzing power) are calculated for the reaction $^6$He(p,p)$^6$He at projectile energies starting at 71 MeV/nucleon. The optical potential needed to describe the reaction is based on a microscopic Watson first-order folding potential, which explicitly takes into account that the two neutrons outside the $^4$He-core occupy an open p-shell. The folding of the single-particle harmonic oscillator density matrix with the nucleon-nucleon t-matrix leads for this case to new terms not present in traditional folding optical potentials for …
The determination of nucleus-nucleus potentials is important not only to describe the properties of the colliding system, but also to extract nuclear-structure information and for modelling nuclear reactions for astrophysics. We present the first determination of double-folding potentials based on chiral effective field theory at leading, next-to-leading, and next-to-next-to-leading order. To this end, we construct new soft local chiral effective field theory interactions. We benchmark this approach in the $^{16}$O-$^{16}$O system, and present results for cross sections computed for elastic sc…
Vector analyzing power for the proton-6He elastic scattering at 71 MeV/nucleon has been measured for the first time, with a newly developed polarized proton solid target working at low magnetic field of 0.09 T. The results are found to be incompatible with a t-matrix folding model prediction. Comparisons of the data with g-matrix folding analyses clearly show that the vector analyzing power is sensitive to the nuclear structure model used in the reaction analysis. The alpha-core distribution in 6He is suggested to be a possible key to understand the nuclear structure sensitivity.
We argue that, in many situations, fits to elastic scattering data that were historically, and frequently still are, considered `good', are not justifiably so describable. Information about the dynamics of nucleon-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus scattering is lost when elastic scattering phenomenology is insufficiently ambitious. It is argued that in many situations, an alternative approach is appropriate for the phenomenology of nuclear elastic scattering of nucleons and other light nuclei. The approach affords an appropriate means of evaluating folding models, one that fully exploits available e…
In this study, the angular distribution of the 16O+10B elastic scattering was measured at Elab (16O)= 24 MeV. In addition to our experimental data, this nuclear system was theoretically analyzed at different energies to study the dynamics of scattering for this system. The data were analyzed within the framework of the double-folding optical potential model.
We investigate the sensitivity of the medium effect in the high-density region on the nucleus-nucleus elastic scattering in the framework of the double-folding (DF) model with the complex $G$-matrix interaction. The medium effect including three-body-force (TBF) effect is investigated with two methods. In the both methods, the medium effect is clearly seen on the potential and the elastic cross section. Finally, we make clear the crucial role of the TBF effect up to $k_F =$ 1.6 fm$^{-1}$ in the nucleus-nucleus elastic scattering.
Large-angle elastic scattering of alpha-particle and strongly-bound light nuclei at a few tens MeV/nucleon has shown the pattern of rainbow scattering. This interesting process was shown to involve a significant overlap of the two colliding nuclei, with the total nuclear density well above the saturation density of normal nuclear matter (NM). For a microscopic calculation of the nucleus-nucleus potential within the folding model, we have developed a density dependent nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction based on the G-matrix interaction M3Y. Our folding analysis of the refractive 4He, 12C, and 16O…
We analyze the radiative correction to high energy elastic electron-proton scattering of polarized electrons. We show that if the approximations inherent in the calculations developed by Tsai and given in the work of Mo and Tsai, which have been used in the analysis of almost all experimental data pertaining to medium and high energy elastic electron scattering for the past three decades, are maintained, then the same radiative correction applies both in the case of initially polarized and unpolarized electrons.
We propose a practical folding model to describe $^{3}$He elastic scattering. In the model, $^{3}$He optical potentials are constructed by making the folding procedure twice. First the nucleon-target potential is evaluated by folding the Melbourne $g$-matrix with the target density and localizing the nonlocal folding potential with the Brieva--Rook method, and second the resulting local nucleon-target potential is folded with the $^{3}$He density. This double single-folding model well describes $^{3}$He elastic scattering from $^{58}$Ni and $^{208}$Pb targets in a wide incident-energy range fr…
Lowest-order QED radiative corrections in unpolarized elastic electron-deuteron scattering beyond the ultra-relativistic limit for the proposed deuteron charge radius measurement at Jefferson Laboratory
The elastic and inelastic scattering of protons from mirror nuclei $^{18}$Ne and $^{18}$O are studied in a folding model approach. For comparison, two different effective interactions are folded with Hartree-Fock densities to obtain the nuclear interaction potentials. Both of them provide equivalent descriptions to the data and the deformation parameters extracted from inelastic scattering are reasonable. The density dependence parameters obtained from nuclear matter calculations and used for present analysis also provide a good estimate for the nuclear mean free path. The present formalism un…
For 52 target nuclei with deuteron as projectile, we calculate the reaction cross sections and elastic scattering angular distributions, as well as the $χ^2$ values for 11 kinds of deuteron optical model potentials: our global deuteron optical potentials and 10 folding optical potentials calculated with 2 phenomenological global nucleon optical potentials given by Koning \textit{et al}(KD) and by Varner\textit{et al}(CH89), and 8 microscopic nucleon optical potentials with the generalized Skyrme force parameters(GS1-6) and modified Skyrme force parameters(SKa, SKb). We find that for constructi…
$α$--cluster states in $^{46}$Cr and $^{54}$Cr are investigated in the double-folding model. This study complements a recent similar work of Souza and Miyake \cite{Sou17} which was based on a specially shaped potential. Excitation energies, reduced widths, intercluster separations, and intra-band transition strengths are calculated and compared to experimental values for the ground state bands in $^{46}$Cr and $^{54}$Cr. The $α$-cluster potential is also applied to elastic scattering at low and intermediate energies. Here, as a byproduct, a larger radial extent of the neutron density in $^{50}…
Here we consider a contribution of Delta(1232) resonance to real photon radiative corrections for elastic $ep$-scattering. The effect is found to be small for past experiments to study unpolarized cross section as well as for the recent VEPP-3 experiment to investigate two-photon exchange effects by precision measurement of $e^\pm p$-scattering cross sections ratio.
The unstable nucleus $^8$Be, with its two $α$-cluster configuration, is the doorway to the formation of heavier $α$-cluster nuclei. Most importantly, its the precursor of the production of $^{12}$C through the Hoyle state, a resonance state of three $α$ clusters, in the helium burning phase of a massive star. The nucleus exhibits a ground state band of rotational states established through $α-α$ scattering experiments. A subsequent precision particle-$γ$ coincidence measurement of the electromagnetic transition between the 4$^+\rightarrow$ 2$^+$ excited states also corroborated the evidence fo…
We present a determination of optical potentials using the double-folding method based on chiral effective field theory nucleon-nucleon interactions at next-to-next-to-leading order combined with dispersion relations to constrain the imaginary part. This approach is benchmarked on $^{16}$O--$^{16}$O collisions, and extended to the $^{12}$C--$^{12}$C and $^{12}$C--$^{16}$O cases. Predictions derived from these potentials are compared to data for elastic scattering at energies up to 1000 MeV, as well as for fusion at low energy. Without adjusting parameters, excellent agreement with experiment i…
The elastic and inelastic proton scattering on $^{18,20,22}$O nuclei are studied in a folding model formalism of nucleon-nucleus optical potential and inelastic form factor. The DDM3Y effective interaction is used and the ground state densities are obtained in continuum Skyrme-HFB approach. A semi-microscopic approach of collective form factors is done to extract the deformation parameters from inelastic scattering analysis while the microscopic approach uses the continuum QRPA form factors. Implications of the values of the deformation parameters, neutron and proton transition moments for the…
Angular distributions for elastic and inelastic scattering of $^3$He from $^{12}$C were measured at energies 50.5 and 60 MeV. The Airy minimum of the prerainbow scattering was clearly observed in the angular distributions for the 0$_2^+$ (7.65 MeV) state of $^{12}$C (Hoyle state). The experimental results were analyzed with a coupled channels method with double folding potentials derived from the microscopic wave functions for the ground 0$_1^+$, 2$^+$ (4.44 MeV), 3$^-$ (9.64 MeV) and 0$_2^+$ states. The analysis supports the view that the Hoyle state is a three alpha particle condensate with …
Calculating microscopic optical potentials for elastic nucleon-nucleus scattering has already led to large body of work in the past. For folding first-order calculations the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction and the one-body density of the nucleus were taken as input to rigorous calculations in a spectator expansion of the multiple scattering series. Based on the Watson expansion of the multiple scattering series we employ a nonlocal translationally invariant nuclear density derived from a chiral next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) and the very same interaction for consistent full-folding calc…
Background: Calculating microscopic effective interactions (optical potentials) for elastic nucleon-nucleus scattering has already in the past led to a large body of work. For first-order calculations a nucleon-nucleon (\textit{NN}) interaction and a one-body density of the nucleus were taken as input to rigorous calculations of microscopic full-folding calculations. Purpose: Based on the spectator expansion of the multiple scattering series we employ a chiral next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) nucleon-nucleon interaction on the same footing in the structure as well as in the reaction calcul…
We propose the no-recoil approximation, which is valid for heavy systems, for a double folding nucleus-nucleus potential. With this approximation, the non-local knock-on exchange contribution becomes a local form. We discuss the applicability of this approximation for the elastic scattering of $^6$Li + $^{40}$Ca system. We find that, for this system and heavier, the no-recoil approximation works as good as another widely used local approximation which employs a local plane wave for the relative motion between the colliding nuclei. We also compare the results of the no-recoil calculations with …
The differential cross section for elastic scattering of deuterons on electrons at rest is calculated taking into account the QED radiative corrections to the leptonic part of interaction. These model-independent radiative corrections arise due to emission of the virtual and real soft and hard photons as well as to vacuum polarization. We consider an experimental setup where both final particles are recorded in coincidence and their energies are determined within some uncertainties. The kinematics, the cross section, and the radiative corrections are calculated and numerical results are presen…
We systematically calculate the radiative corrections of order $α/π$ to elastic muon-proton scattering at low momentum transfers. These include vacuum polarization, photon-loop form factors of the muon and the proton, two-photon exchange corrections and soft photon radiation. In particular, we discuss these corrections for the kinematics of the upcomimg AMBER experiment with a $100\,$GeV muon beam energy. It is found that for the ratio to the Born cross section, only the minor terms from the photon-loop form factors of the proton and two-photon exchange depend on the proton structure predeterm…

We present a simultaneous analysis of the elastic scattering and fusion cross-section data of the $^{12}$C+$^{24}$Mg system around the Coulomb barrier and over energies by using the microscopic $α$-$α$ double folding cluster potential within the framework of the optical model and the coupled-channels formalism. The $α$-$α$ double folding cluster potential is obtained by using the $α$-cluster distribution densities of the nuclei in the usual double folding procedure. The microscopic potential results are compared with the findings of the phenomenological deep and shallow potentials. It is subse…
We calculate polarization phenomena for virtual Compton scattering on protons, at relatively large momentum transfer 1 GeV$^2$ $\le -q^2\le$ 5 GeV$^2$ on the basis of a model for $γ^*+ p\to γ+p$ with two main contributions: $π^0$-exchange in $t-$channel and $Δ$-excitation in $s$-channel. This model applies from threshold to $Δ$ region. The parameters entering in this model, such as coupling constants and electromagnetic form factors are well known. The analyzing powers for $γ^*+\vec p\to γ+ p$ and the components of the final proton polarization in $γ^*+ p\to γ+ \vec p$ are large in absolute va…
Elastic and radiative heavy quark interactions with light partons are studied with the partonic transport description BAMPS (Boltzmann Approach to MultiParton Scatterings). After calculating the cross section of radiative processes for finite masses in the improved Gunion-Bertsch approximation and verifying this calculation by comparing to the exact result, we study elastic and radiative heavy quark energy loss in a static medium of quarks and gluons. Furthermore, the full 3+1D space-time evolution of gluons, light quarks, and heavy quarks in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the BNL …
The observed cross sections of quasi-elastic scattering of 6He, 7Be, and 8B nuclei by 12C nuclei are described within the framework of the diffraction nuclear model and the model of nucleus-nucleus scattering in the high-energy approximation with a double folding potential, for intermediate energies of the incident particles. The calculations make use of realistic distributions of nucleon densities and take account of the Coulomb interaction and inelastic scattering with excitation of low-lying collective states of the target.
Elastic cross sections are calculated and compared with the data on $π^{\pm}$ scattering on $^{28}$Si, $^{40}$Ca, $^{58}$Ni, $^{208}$Pb nuclei in the energy range from 130 to 290 MeV. To this end, both the folding optical potential (OP) and the local modified Kisslinger-type OP were calculated, and then the $πA$ cross sections were obtained by solving the Klein-Gordon equation to account for the relativization and distortion wave effects. In the folding OPs, the parameters of the elementary $πN$ amplitude were fitted when describing the $πA$ scattering data, and thus the essential in-medium ef…
We investigate $K^{+}$-nucleus elastic scattering at intermediate energies within a microscopic optical model approach. To this effect we use the current $K^{+}$-nucleon {\it (KN)} phase shifts from the Center for Nuclear Studies of the George Washington University as primary input. First, the {\it KN} phase shifts are used to generate Gel'fand-Levitan-Marchenko real and local inversion potentials. Secondly, these potentials are supplemented with a short range complex separable term in such a way that the corresponding unitary and non-unitary {\it KN} $S$ matrices are exactly reproduced. These…
A microscopic study of proton elastic scattering from unstable nuclei at intermediate energies using a relativistic formalism is presented. We have employed both the original relativistic impulse approximation (IA1) and the generalised impulse approximation (IA2) formalisms to calculate the relativistic optical potentials, with target densities derived from relativistic mean field (RMF) theory using the NL3 and FSUGold parameter sets. Comparisons between the optical potentials computed using both IA1 and IA2 formalisms, and the different RMF Lagrangians are presented for both stable and unstab…
We present a determination of optical potentials for $^4$He-target collisions using the double-folding method. We use chiral effective field theory nucleon-nucleon interactions at next-to-next-to-leading order combined with state-of-the-art nucleonic densities. The imaginary part of the optical potential is obtained from the real double-folding interaction either through a proportionality constant or applying Kramers-Kronig dispersion relations. With these potentials, we compute the elastic scattering of $^4$He off various targets, from $^4$He to $^{120}$Sn. We study the sensitivity of our pre…
We investigate the property of the high-density nuclear matter probed by the nucleus-nucleus elastic scattering in the framework of the double-folding (DF) model with the complex $G$-matrix interaction. The medium effect including three-body-force (TBF) effect is investigated with present two methods based on the frozen density approximation (FDA). The medium effect is clearly seen on the potential and the elastic cross section for the $^{16}$O + $^{16}$O system at $E/A =$ 70 MeV. The crucial role of the medium effect is also confirmed with other effective nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) interactions. …
A microscopic description of the quasielastic (p,n) charge-exchange reaction (here, charge-exchange scattering between analogue states) is presented and discussed. Emphasis is focused on the spin-isospin structure of the projectile-target coupling. The model is a coupled-channel extension of the full-folding optical model approach (OMP) developed for nucleon elastic scattering, where emphasis is placed on retaining the genuine off-shell behavior of realistic effective interactions in the nuclear medium. The resulting non-local optical potentials are applied to the calculation of (p,n) differen…
We study the Delta^{++} contributions to elastic and radiative π^+p scattering within an effective Lagrangian model which incorporates the Delta, N, rho and sigma meson degrees of freedom. This model provides a description of the Delta resonance and its interactions that respects electromagnetic gauge invariance and invariance under contact transformations when finite width effects are incorporated. Following recent developments in the description of unstable gauge bosons, we use a complex mass scheme to introduce the finite width of the Delta^{++} without spoiling gauge invariance. The total …
The experimentally available angular distributions (ADs) for 6,7Li and 20Ne ions elastically scattered from a 24Mg target are reanalyzed using various nuclear potentials based on phenomenological and microscopic approaches. The ADs for the 6Li + 24Mg system at energies Elab = 20, 88, and 240 MeV are considered, as are the ADs for the 7Li + 24Mg system at Elab = 20, 34, and 88 MeV, and the ADs for the 20Ne + 24Mg systems at Elab = 50, 60, 80, 90, and 100 MeV. Special emphasis is placed on the (d + α) and (t + α) cluster structures of 6Li and 7Li weakly bound projectiles, which appear at relativ…
We investigate the effect of the deuteron breakup on the optical potential for the elastic scattering of 56 MeV deuterons from $^{51}$V. The breakup probabilities calculated within the post-form distorted wave Born-approximation theory of breakup reactions are fitted to derive the contribution to the optical potential from the breakup channels. The breakup potentials are found to have large real as well as imaginary parts. Thus the dynamical polarization potential due to the breakup process is expected to modify strongly the real part of the optical potential calculated by the double folding m…
We investigate the use of proton-nucleus elastic scattering experiments using secondary beams of 6He and 8He to determine the physical structure of these nuclei. The sensitivity of these experiments to nuclear structure is examined by using four different nuclear structure models with different spatial features using a full-folding optical potential model. The results show that elastic scattering at intermediate energies (<100 MeV per nucleon) is not a good constraint to be used to determine features of structure. Therefore researchers should look elsewhere to put constraints on the ground sta…
We present the LHC predictions for the WHDG model of radiative, elastic, and path length fluctuating energy loss. We find the pT dependence of RAA is qualitatively very different from AWS-based energy loss extrapolations to the LHC; the large pT reach of the year one data at the LHC should suffice to distinguish between the two. We also discuss the importance of requiring a first elastic scatter before any medium-induced elastic or radiative loss occurs, a necessary physical effect not considered in any previous models.
