Background: Calculating microscopic effective interactions (optical potentials) for elastic nucleon-nucleus scattering has already in the past led to a large body of work. For first-order calculations a nucleon-nucleon (\textit{NN}) interaction and a one-body density of the nucleus were taken as input to rigorous calculations of microscopic full-folding calculations.
Purpose: Based on the spectator expansion of the multiple scattering series we employ a chiral next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) nucleon-nucleon interaction on the same footing in the structure as well as in the reaction calculation to obtain an in leading-order consistent effective potential for nucleon-nucleus elastic scattering, which includes the spin of the struck target nucleon.
Methods: The first order effective folding potential is computed by first deriving a nonlocal scalar density as well as a spin-projected momentum distribution. Those are then integrated with the off-shell Wolfenstein amplitudes $A$, $C$, and $M$. The resulting nonlocal potential serves as input to a momentum-space Lippmann-Schwinger equation, whose solutions are summed to obtain the nucleon-nucleus scattering observables.
Results: We calculate elastic scattering observables for $^4$He, $^6$He, $^8$He, $^{12}$C, and $^{16}$O in the energy regime between 100 and 200 MeV projectile kinetic energy, and compare to available data. We also explore the extension down to about 70 MeV, and study the effect of ignoring the spin of the struck nucleon in the nucleus.
Conclusions: In our calculations we contrast elastic scattering off closed-shell and open-shell nuclei. We find that for closed-shell nuclei the approximation of ignoring the spin of the struck target nucleon is excellent. We only see effects of the spin of the struck target nucleon when considering $^6$He and $^8$He, which are nuclei with a $N/Z$ ratio larger than 1.
This paper deals with the possible motion of nucleons in the nucleus, which is due to realistic inter-nucleonic forces. This approach provides new or more substantiated conclusions about the nuclear structure than those based on the effective interaction of nucleons, while the shell model of the nucleus may lead to questionable conclusions regarding the nuclear structure and nuclear reaction mechanisms.
The influence of the underlying nucleon-nucleon collision geometry on evaluations of the nuclear overlap function ($T_{AB}$) and number of binary collisions ($N_{coll}$) is studied. A narrowing of the spatial distribution of the hard-partons with large light-cone fraction $x$ in nucleons leads to a downward correction for $N_{coll}$ and $T_{AB}$, which in turn, results in an upward correction for the nuclear modification factor $R_{AB}$. The size of this correction is estimated for several experimentally motivated nucleon-nucleon overlap functions for hard-partons. It is found to be significan…
We re-examine a symmetry in nucleon - nucleus scattering that previously had been proclaimed to be dead. We show that this symmetry is the continuum analog of pseudospin symmetry, a relativistic symmetry which manifests itself in the spectra of nuclei. Using experimental data only we show that pseudospin symmetry in nucleon - nucleus scattering is not dead but only modestly broken for 800 MeV proton scattering on nuclei.
An experimental opportunity is presented for the future to measure possible P- and T-non-invariant axion-like interaction between nucleons in a Fm range. This interaction may be searched for in the measurement spin-dependent asymmetry of scattering of polarized neutrons in a keV-MeV energy range by heavy nuclei.
A new finite-range representation of the JLM effective nucleon-nucleon interaction is suggested based on the CDM3Y density dependent functional and M3Y-Paris interaction. The density dependence has been carefully adjusted at each energy so that the nucleon optical potential (OP) given by the new density dependent interaction in the Hartree-Fock calculation of nuclear matter closely matches the JLM nucleon OP given by the Brueckner-Hatree-Fock calculation. The new interaction has been used in the double-folding model to calculate the OP for the elastic $^{6}$Li,$^{6}$He,$^{12}$C + $^{12}$C scat…
The newly developed Gorkov-Green's function approach represents a promising path to the ab initio description of medium-mass open-shell nuclei. We discuss the implementation of the method at second order with a two-body interaction, with particular attention to the numerical solution of Gorkov's equation. Different sources of theoretical error and degrees of self-consistency are investigated. We show that Krylov projection techniques with a multi-pivot Lanczos algorithm efficiently handle the growth of poles in the one-body Green's function when Gorkov's equation is solved self-consistently. T…
Even though the total hadronic nucleus-nucleus cross section is among the most fundamental observables, it has only recently been measured precisely for lead-lead collisions at the LHC. This measurement implies the nucleon width should be below 0.7 fm, which is in contradiction with all known state-of-the-art Bayesian estimates. We study the implications of the smaller nucleon width on quark-gluon plasma properties such as the bulk viscosity. The smaller nucleon width dramatically improves the description of several triple-differential observables.
We formulate the In-Medium Similarity Renormalization Group (IM-SRG) for open-shell nuclei using a multi-reference formalism based on a generalized Wick theorem introduced in quantum chemistry. The resulting multi-reference IM-SRG (MR-IM-SRG) is used to perform the first ab initio study of even oxygen isotopes with chiral NN and 3N Hamiltonians, from the proton to the neutron drip lines. We obtain an excellent reproduction of experimental ground-state energies with quantified uncertainties, which is validated by results from the Importance-Truncated No-Core Shell Model and the Coupled Cluster …
We present microscopic calculations of low energy scattering observables in all possible four nucleon systems : n-3H, p-3He and p-3H. Results were obtained by solving Faddeev-Yakubovski equations in configuration space, appropriately modified to include Coulomb and three-nucleon forces.
We use a Glauber-like approach to describe very energetic nucleus-nucleus collisions as a sequence of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. No free parameters are needed: all the information comes from simple parametrizations of nucleon-nucleon collision data. Produced mesons are assumed not to interact with each other or with the original baryons. Comparisons are made to published experimental measurements of baryon rapidity and transverse momentum distributions, negative hadron rapidity and transverse momentum distributions, average multiplicities of pions, kaons, hyperons, and antihyperons, an…
The collision smearing of the nucleon momenta about their initial values during relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is investigated. To a certain degree, our model belongs to the transport type, and we investigate the evolution of the nucleon system created at a nucleus-nucleus collision. However, we parameterize this development by the number of collisions of every particle during evolution rather than by the time variable. It is assumed that the group of nucleons which leave the system after the same number of collisions can be joined in a particular statistical ensemble. The nucleon non…
Different types of high-energy hadron-nucleus cross sections are discussed emphasizing the role played by Nucleon-Nucleon (NN) Short-Range Correlations (SRC) and Gribov Inelastic Shadowing (IS)
Based on the spectator expansion of the multiple scattering series we employ a nonlocal translationally invariant nuclear density derived from a chiral next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) and the very same interaction for consistent full-folding calculations of the effective (optical) potential for nucleon-nucleus scattering for light nuclei.
We propose a mechanism of thermalization of nucleons in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions. Our model belongs, to a certain degree, to the transport ones; we consider the evolution of the system, but we parametrize this development by the number of collisions of every particle in the system rather than by the time variable. We based on the assumption that the nucleon momentum transfer after several nucleon-nucleon (-hadron) collisions becomes a random quantity driven by a proper distribution.
We present an overview of the evolution of ab initio methods for few-nucleon systems with A \ge 4, tracing the progress made that today allows precision calculations for these systems. First a succinct description of the diverse approaches is given. In order to identify analogies and differences the methods are grouped according to different formulations of the quantum mechanical many-body problem. Various significant applications from the past and present are described. We discuss the results with emphasis on the developments following the original implementations of the approaches. In partic…
The fast-stage nucleon emission of proton-nucleus (pA) reactions from 300A MeV to 1.8A GeV has been investigated using the quantum molecular-dynamics model. It is found that the sideward angular spectrum of nucleon emission presents an interesting Mach-like structure at the early stage of the collision (tens of fm/c). The sideward angular peak value varies from about 45\circ to near 73\circ, depending on the bombarding energy. Nucleons emitted from the vicinity of the sideward peak tend to have a fixed momentum value about 0.5 GeV/c, independent of the bombarding energy as well as the impact p…
Charmonium productions in $p-p$ and $A-B$ collisions have been estimated within the ambit of colour evaporation model (CEM). The model parameters have been fixed by fitting the theoretical results with CDF data. The method is then applied to RHIC and LHC energies to obtain the transverse momentum distributions of $J/ψ$, $ψ^{\prime}$ and $χ_c$. Suppression due to Debye screening in a quark gluon plasma (QGP) is estimated at various centrality cuts. The final $p_T$ distributions of various resonances are then predicted convoluting with the survival probability.
The spectrum, partial and total decay widths of the states of the exotic 10Li nucleus are studied in an ab initio approach. The spectrum is calculated using No-Core Shell Model and corresponding extrapolation procedure. The calculations use the well-proven Daejeon16 potential. The NCSM-based approach, which includes a method for constructing the basis of functions of cluster channels and a procedure for matching the cluster form factors obtained within this method with the asymptotic wave functions, is applied to compute the widths of the levels. The results obtained quite adequately reproduce…
The effects of charge symmetry breaking in nucleon electromagnetic form factors on parity- violating elastic electron-12C scattering is studied, and found to be much smaller than other known effects. The analysis of a planned experiment is discussed.
We present results from ab initio No-Core Full Configuration simulations of the exotic proton-rich nucleus $^{14}$F whose first experimental observation is expected soon. The calculations with JISP16 NN interaction are performed up to the $N_{\max}=8$ basis space. The binding energy is evaluated using an extrapolation technique. This technique is generalized to excitation energies, verified in calculations of $^6$Li and applied to $^{14}$B, the $^{14}$F mirror, for which some data are available.
Optical potentials for $K^+$-nucleus interactions are constructed from $K^+$-nucleon amplitudes using recently developed algorithm based on $K^+$-N kinematics in the nuclear medium. With the deep penetration of $K^+$ mesons into the nucleus at momenta below 800~MeV/c it is possible to test this approach with greater sensitivity than hitherto done with $K^-$ and pions. The energy-dependence of experimental reaction and total cross sections on nuclei is better reproduced with this approach compared to fixed-energy amplitudes. The inclusion of Pauli correlations in the medium also improves the ag…
The remarkable observations in the pion induced and charge exchange reactions on a nucleus are the significant shift and broadening of the $Δ(1232)$-peak relative to free pion nucleon scattering. For the forward going massless leptons, the weak process $(ν_l,l)$ on a nucleon, according to Adler's partially conserved axial current theorem, is connected to the pion nucleon scattering. This mechanism is also applicable to the nucleus. Therefore, the modification of the $Δ$-peak in a nucleus can be seen in the $(ν_l,l)$ reaction since it is connected to the pion nucleus scattering. To investigate …
Knockout reactions with heavy ion targets in inverse kinematics, as well as "quasi-free" (p,2p) and (p,pn) reactions are useful tools for nuclear spectroscopy. We report calculations on \textit{ab-initio} many-body wavefunctions based on the no-core shell model to study the nucleon removal reactions in light nuclei, including beryllium, carbon, and oxygen isotopic chains, and explore the importance of using an \textit{ab-initio} method. Our study helps clarifying how the extraction of spectroscopic factors from the experiments depend on the details of the many-body wavefunctions being probed. …
We study the efficacy of a new ab initio framework that combines the symmetry-adapted (SA) no-core shell-model approach with the resonating group method (RGM) for unified descriptions of nuclear structure and reactions. We obtain ab initio neutron-nucleus interactions for $^4$He, $^{16}$O, and $^{20}$Ne targets, starting with realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials. We discuss the effect of increasing model space sizes and symmetry-based selections on the SA-RGM norm and direct potential kernels, as well as on phase shifts, which are the input to calculations of cross sections. We demonstrate the…
The n-d elastic and breakup cross sections are computed by solving the three-body Faddeev equations for realistic and semi-realistic Nucleon-Nucleon potentials. These cross sections are inserted in the Monte Carlo simulation of the nuclear processes considered in the International Handbook of Evaluated Criticality Safety Benchmark Experiments (ICSBEP). The results obtained using thes ab initio n-d cross sections are compared with those provided by the most renown international libraries.
We develop a new ab initio many-body approach capable of describing simultaneously both bound and scattering states in light nuclei, by combining the resonating-group method with the use of realistic interactions, and a microscopic and consistent description of the nucleon clusters. This approach preserves translational symmetry and Pauli principle. We outline technical details and present phase shift results for neutron scattering on 3H, 4He and 10Be and proton scattering on 3He and 4He, using realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials. Our A=4 scattering results are compared to earlier ab ini…
The cross sections for producing K$^-$ mesons in nucleon-hyperon elementary processes are estimated assuming one-pion exchange and using the experimentally known pion-hyperon cross sections. The results are implemented in a transport model which is applied to calculation of proton-nucleus collisions. In significant difference to earlier estimates for heavy-ion collisions the inclusion of the nucleon-hyperon cross section roughly doubles the K$^-$ production in near-threshold proton-nucleus collisions.
Contains the conclusions and recommendations from this meeting regarding future experimental and theoretical work on the medium-energy nucleon-nucleus optical model.
We present a determination of optical potentials for $^{10}$Be-nucleus collisions using the double-folding method to compute the real part and Kramers-Kronig dispersion relations to derive the imaginary part. As microscopic inputs we use chiral effective field theory nucleon-nucleon interactions at next-to-next-to-leading order combined with state-of-the-art nucleonic densities. With these potentials, we compute elastic scattering cross sections for the exotic nucleus 10 Be off various targets, and compare them to experiment. Without any fitting parameter, we obtain good agreement with data. F…
Nuclear surface provides useful information on nuclear radius, nuclear structure as well as properties of nuclear matter. We discuss the relationship between the nuclear surface diffuseness and elastic scattering differential cross section at the first diffraction peak of high-energy nucleon-nucleus scattering as an efficient tool in order to extract the nuclear surface information from limited experimental data involving short-lived unstable nuclei. The high-energy reaction is described by a reliable microscopic reaction theory, the Glauber model. Extending the idea of the black sphere model,…
Two causes of non-locality inherent in nucleon-nucleus scattering are considered. They are the results of two-nucleon antisymmetry of the projectile with each nucleon in the nucleus and the dynamic polarization potential representation of channel coupling. For energies $\sim 40 - 300$ MeV, a g-folding model of the optical potential is used to show the influence of the knock-out process that is a result of the two-nucleon antisymmetry. To explore the dynamic polarization potential caused by channel coupling, a multichannel algebraic scattering model has been used for low-energy scattering.
The main features of the convolution model which, in the region of two-nucleon (2N) and three-nucleon (3N) short-range correlations (SRC), describes the one-nucleon momentum distribution n(k_1) and the spectral function P(k_1,E) in terms of a convolution integral involving the relative n_{rel}(k_{rel}) and the center-of-mass n_{c.m.}(K_{c.m.}) momentum distributions of a nucleon-nucleon pair, are illustrated in detail. It is stressed that the model, which stems from the universal property of factorization exhibited by the nuclear wave function at short inter-nucleon distances, is only applicab…
We investigate the effects of chiral NNLO three-nucleon force (3NF) on nucleus-nucleus elastic scattering, using a standard prescription based on the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock method and the g-matrix folding model. The g-matrix calculated in nuclear matter from the chiral N3LO two-nucleon forces (2NF) is close to that from the Bonn-B 2NF. Because the Melbourne group have already developed a practical g-matrix interaction by localizing the nonlocal g-matrix calculated from the Bonn-B 2NF, we consider the effects of chiral 3NF, in this first attempt to study the 3NF effects, by modifying the local …
We show the first results for the elastic scattering of neutrons off oxygen and calcium isotopes obtained from ab initio optical potentials. The potential is derived using self consistent Green's function theory (SCGF) with the saturating chiral interaction NNLO$_{\textrm{sat}}$. Our calculations are compared to available scattering data and show that it is possible to reproduce low energy scattering observables in medium mass nuclei from first principles.
The role played by nucleon-nucleon short-range correlations in photon- and electron-nucleus reactions is analyzed with a model which includes all the diagrams containing a single correlation function. The excitation of low-lying high-spin states, the reactions (e,e'), (e,e'N) and ($γ$,N) and the two-proton emission by both electrons and real photons are investigated. The results obtained for doubly-closed shell nuclei show that ($γ$,pp) appears to be the most adequate process to identify short-range correlations in the clearer way.
We extend the ab initio no-core shell model/resonating-group method to include three-nucleon (3N) interactions for the description of nucleon-nucleus collisions. We outline the formalism, give algebraic expressions for the 3N-force integration kernels, and discuss computational aspects of two alternative implementations. The extended theoretical framework is then applied to nucleon-4He scattering using similarity-renormalization-group (SRG) evolved nucleon-nucleon plus three-nucleon potentials derived from chiral effective field theory. We analyze the convergence properties of the calculated p…
An exact determination of the size of the pseudospin symmetry violating part of the nucleon-nucleus scattering amplitude from scattering observables is presented. The approximation recently used by Ginocchio turns out to underestimate the violation of pseudospin symmetry. Nevertheless the conclusion of a modestly broken pseudospin symmetry in proton-208Pb scattering at EL=800MeV remains valid.
The nonlocality of the microscopic nucleon-nucleus optical potential is commonly localized by the Brieva-Rook approximation. The validity of the localization is tested for the proton+$^{90}$Zr scattering at the incident energies from 65 MeV to 800 MeV. The localization is valid in the wide incident-energy range.
A previous model on inclusive charged-current quasi-elastic nuclear reactions is extended to include neutral- and charged-current nucleon emission reactions. The problem of outgoing nucleon propagation is treated by means of a Monte Carlo simulation.
The sensitivity of nucleon-nucleus elastic scattering observables to the off-shell structure of nucleon-nucleon t-matrices, derived from realistic NN potentials, is investigated within the context of a full-folding model based on the impulse approximation. Our study uses recently developed NN potential models, which describe a subset of the NN data base with a $χ^2$ per datum $\sim$1, which means that the NN t-matrices are essentially on-shell equivalent. We calculate proton-nucleus elastic scattering observables for $^{16}$O, $^{40}$Ca, and $^{208}$Pb between 100 and 200 MeV laboratory energy…
Nucleon total reaction and neutron total cross sections to 300 MeV for 12C and 208Pb, and for 65 MeV spanning the mass range, are predicted using coordinate space optical potentials formed by full folding of effective nucleon-nucleon interactions with realistic nuclear ground state densities. Good to excellent agreement is found with existing data.
The intranuclear cascade model overestimates the multiplicity of produced mesons in nucleus-nucleus interactions without taking into account meson and baryon resonance production. Inclusion of the resonances leads to decreasing multiplicity of mesons, neutrons and protons. In order to overcome the problem, it is proposed to use the FRITIOF model adapted to low energies in a combination with the reggeon theory inspired model of nuclear destruction. It is shown that the combination allows one to reproduce satisfactory the meson and baryon yields in the nucleus-nucleus collisions at the energy of…
We study the effect of bound nucleon form factors on charged-current neutrino-nucleus scattering. The bound nucleon form factors of the vector and axial-vector currents are calculated in the quark-meson coupling model. We compute the inclusive $^{12}$C($ν_μ,μ^-$)$X$ cross sections using a relativistic Fermi gas model with the calculated bound nucleon form factors. The effect of the bound nucleon form factors for this reaction is a reduction of $\sim$8% for the total cross section, relative to that calculated with the free nucleon form factors.
A finite-dimensional matrix model for the nucleon-nucleon cross section operator is used to calculate the dispersive correction to nucleon-nucleus total cross sections, and the leading terms in its expansion in the number of inelastic transitions in the high-energy limit where the longitudnal momentum transfers can be ignored.
We investigate the properties of 7Li with the JISP16 and chiral NNLO_opt nucleon-nucleon interactions and 7Be with the JISP16 interaction in the ab initio no-core full configuration (NCFC) approach. We calculate selected observables that include energy spectra, point proton root-mean-square radii, electromagnetic moments and transitions. We compare our results with experimental results, where available, as well as with results obtained using nucleon-nucleon plus three-nucleon interactions. We obtain reasonable agreement between theory and experiment for low-lying states that are dominated by p…
Within the key issues of hadronic physics one of the interesting issues in nuclear physics is whether there is a transition region between meson-nucleon and quark-gluon degrees of freedom in the NN interaction. This question is relevant for pairs of free nucleons as well as for nucleon pairs immersed in nuclear matter. From NN phase shifts we deduce a dibaryonic scale of 1 GeV for the soft core NN potential strengths at nucleon separation r equal 0.25 to 0.5 fm. A short range intermediate transition, with fusion and fission of the two scattered nucleons into a dibaryon with prevailing quark-gl…
We derive ab initio optical potentials from self-consistent Green's function (SCGF) theory and compute the elastic scattering of neutrons off oxygen and calcium isotopes. The comparison with scattering data is satisfactory at low scattering energies. The method is benchmarked against no-core shell model with continuum (NCSMC) calculations, showing that virtual excitations of the target are crucial to predict proper fragmentation and absorption at higher energies. This is a significant step toward deriving optical potentials for medium mass nuclei and complex many-body systems in general.
We combine a recently developed ab initio many-body approach capable of describing simultaneously both bound and scattering states, the ab initio NCSM/RGM, with an importance truncation scheme for the cluster eigenstate basis and demostrate its applicability to nuclei with mass numbers as high as 17. Using soft similarity renormalization group evolved chiral nucleon-nucleon interactions, we first calculate nucleon-4He phase shifts, cross sections and analyzing power. Next, we investigate nucleon scattering on 7Li, 7Be, 12C and 16O in coupled-channel NCSM/RGM calculations that include low-lying…
Methods of analysis of nucleon-nucleus scattering data have progressed markedly over the past 50 years, yet many analyses of scattering data still use prescriptions specified at various stages of that progress. But the assumptions made or inherent in those analyses are poorly justified and most are no longer necessary to facilitate evaluations. We investigate some of those assumptions and highlight deficiencies and the uncertainties they may make in data analyses.
The neutron rich exotic unbound 7He nucleus has been the subject of many experimental investigations. While the ground-state 3/2- resonance is well established, there is a controversy concerning the excited 1/2- resonance reported in some experiments as low-lying and narrow (E_R ~ 1 MeV, Gamma < 1 MeV) while in others as very broad and located at a higher energy. This issue cannot be addressed by ab initio theoretical calculations based on traditional bound-state methods. We introduce a new unified approach to nuclear bound and continuum states based on the coupling of the no-core shell model,…
Interpretation of current and future neutrino oscillation and electron scattering experiments requires knowledge of lepton-nucleon and lepton-nucleus interactions at the percent level. We study the exchange of photons between charged particles and the nuclear medium for (anti)neutrino-, electron-, and muon-induced reactions inside a large nucleus. While quantum electrodynamics (QED)-medium contributions are formally suppressed by two powers of the electromagnetic coupling constant $α$ when compared to the leading-order cross sections, low-energy modes and the nuclear size enhance the effect by…
An ab-initio calculation scheme for finite nuclei based on self-consistent Green's functions in the Gorkov formalism is developed. It aims at describing properties of doubly-magic and semi-magic nuclei employing state-of-the-art microscopic nuclear interactions and explicitly treating pairing correlations through the breaking of U(1) symmetry associated with particle number conservation. The present paper introduces the formalism, necessary to undertake applications at (self-consistent) second-order using two-nucleon interactions, in a detailed and self-contained fashion. First applications of…
We analyze $^{16}$O-$^{16}$O and $^{12}$C-$^{12}$C scattering with the microscopic coupled-channels method and investigate the coupled-channels and three-nucleon-force (3NF) effects on elastic and inelastic cross sections. In the microscopic coupled-channels calculation, the Melbourne g-matrix interaction modified according to the chiral 3NF effects is used. It is found that the coupled-channels and 3NF effects additively change both the elastic and inelastic cross sections. As a result, the coupled-channels calculation including the 3NF effects significantly improves the agreement between the…
The sensitivity of nucleon-nucleus elastic scattering to the off-shell behavior of realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions is investigated when on-shell equivalent nucleon-nucleon potentials are used. The study is based on applications of the full-folding optical model potential for an explicit treatment of the off-shell behavior of the nucleon-nucleon effective interaction. Applications were made at beam energies between 40 and 500 MeV for proton scattering from 40Ca and 208Pb. We use the momentum-dependent Paris potential and its local on-shell equivalent as obtained with the Gelfand-Levitan …
