The level density of quantum states in statistical mesoscopic systems is a critical input for various fields of physics, including nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics, atomic physics and their applications. In atomic nuclei, the level density is a fundamental measure of their complex structure at relatively high energies. Here we present the first model-independent measurement of the absolute partial nuclear level density for a short-lived unstable nucleus. For this purpose, we introduce the ``Shape method'' to extract the shape of the $γ$-ray strength function. Combining the Shape method with the existing $β$-Oslo technique allows the extraction of the nuclear level density without the need for theoretical input. We benchmark the Shape method using results for the stable $^{76}$Ge nucleus, finding an excellent agreement to previous experimental results. We apply the Shape method to new experimental data on the short-lived $^{88}$Kr nucleus. Our method opens the door for measurements of the nuclear level density and $γ$-ray strength function far away from stability, a pivotal input required to understand the role of exotic nuclei in forming the cosmos.
The most important systematical errors in determination of level density and radiative strength functions for deformed nuclei have been estimated from the gamma-ray spectra in nuclear reactions like the stripping or pickup reactions.
The scandium isotopes 44,45Sc have been studied with the 45Sc(3He,alpha gamma)44Sc and 45Sc(3He,3He' gamma)45Sc reactions, respectively. The nuclear level densities and gamma-ray strength functions have been extracted using the Oslo method. The experimental level densities are compared to calculated level densities obtained from a microscopic model based on BCS quasiparticles within the Nilsson level scheme. This model also gives information about the parity distribution and the number of broken Cooper pairs as a function of excitation energy. The experimental gamma-ray strength functions are …
We present the first global extraction of the jet transport coefficient ($\hat q$) for cold nuclear matter within the framework of higher-twist expansion. The analysis takes into account the world data on transverse momentum broadening in semi-inclusive $e$-A deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and in Drell-Yan dilepton and heavy quarkonium production in $p$-A collisions, as well as the nuclear modification of the structure functions in DIS. The results of this work provide the first quantitative evidence for the universality and non-trivial scale dependence of the medium transport property, simil…
We propose a new method for extracting neutron structure functions from inclusive structure functions of nuclei. Unlike earlier approaches, the new method is applicable to both spin-averaged and spin-dependent structure functions. We test the reliability of the method on unpolarized F_2 and polarized g_1 structure functions of the deuteron in both the nucleon resonance and deep inelastic regions. The new method is able to reproduce known input functions of almost arbitrary shape to very good accuracy with only several iterations.
A method to extract primary $γ$-ray spectra from particle-$γ$ coincidences at excitation energies up to the neutron binding energy is described. From these spectra, the level density and $γ$-ray strength function can be determined. From the level density, several thermodynamical quantities are obtained within the microcanonical and canonical ensemble. Also models for the $γ$-ray strength function are discussed.
The energy spectrum of two short-range interacting particles in a harmonic potential trap has previously been related to free-space scattering phase shifts. But the existing formula for this purpose is exact only in the limit of an infinitely shallow trap. Here we provide a systematically improved formula---describing the low-energy dynamics---that enables the use of finite traps. This paves the way for extracting nuclear scattering phase shifts from {\it ab initio} nuclear many-body structure calculations, a long-sought goal in nuclear physics. The derivation establishes effective field theor…
The space-averaged phase-space density and entropy per particle are both fundamental observables which can be extracted from the two-particle correlation functions measured in heavy-ion collisions. Two techniques have been proposed to extract the densities from correlation data: either by using the radius parameters from Gaussian fits to meson correlations or by using source imaging, which may be applied to any like pair correlation. We show that the imaging and Gaussian fits give the same result in the case of meson interferometry. We discuss the concept of an equivalent instantaneous source …
Methods of extraction of the symmetry energy (or enthalpy) coefficient to temperature ratio from isobaric and isotopic yields of fragments produced in Fermi-energy heavy-ion collisions are discussed. We show that the methods are consistent when the hot fragmenting source is well characterized and its excitation energy and isotopic composition are properly taken into account. The results are independent of the mass number of the detected fragments, which suggests that their fate is decided very early in the reaction.

Nuclear caloric curves have been analyzed using an expanding Fermi gas hypothesis to extract average nuclear densities. In this approach the observed flattening of the caloric curves reflects progressively increasing expansion with increasing excitation energy. This expansion results in a corresponding decrease in the density and Fermi energy of the excited system. For nuclei of medium to heavy mass apparent densities ~ 0.4 rho_0 are reached at the higher excitation energies.
Pairing correlations have a strong influence on nuclear level densities. Empirical descriptions and theoretical models have been developed to take these effects into account. The present article discusses cases, where descriptions of nuclear level densities are inconsistent or in conflict with the present understanding of nuclear properties. Phenomenological approaches consider a back-shift parameter. However, the absolute magnitude of the back-shift, which actually corresponds to the pairing condensation energy, is generally not compatible with the observation that stable pairing correlations…
This report is presented the level densities and gamma strength function which is extracted from primary gamma transitions of (n,2g) measurement on the Dalat Nuclear Research Reactor (DNRR). The comparisons with others results and model calculations, there are outside the scope of uncertainty. These research results are showed that having of complement research for deformed nucleus in order to evaluate nuclear structure models.
The nuclear symmetry energy determines the birth of neutron stars and the elementary nucleosynthesis in the universe. To constrain the nuclear symmetry energy, besides the studies in astrophysics, many terrestrial nuclear experiments are being carried out using a wide variety of advanced new facilities. In this paper, by cross-checking two unrelated experimental measurements using the newly updated transport model, we obtained a slightly soft symmetry energy at supra-saturation nuclear densities. While extrapolating to low nuclear densities, this result is compatible with the recent finding by…
Understanding the evolution of level densities in the crossover from spherical to well-deformed nuclei has been a long-standing problem in nuclear physics. We measure nuclear level densities for a chain of neodymium isotopes $^{142,144-151}$Nd which exhibit such a crossover. These results represent to date the most complete data set of nuclear level densities for an isotopic chain between neutron shell-closure and towards mid-shell. We observe a strong increase of the level densities along the chain with an overall increase by a factor of $\approx 170$ at an excitation energy of 7.5 MeV and sa…
Understanding the equation of state of dense QCD matter remains a major challenge in both nuclear physics and astrophysics. Neutron star observations from electromagnetic and gravitational wave spectra provide critical insights into the behavior of dense neutron-rich matter. The next generation of telescopes and gravitational wave observatories will offer even more detailed observations of neutron stars. Utilizing deep learning techniques to map neutron star mass and radius observations to the equation of state allows for its accurate and reliable determination. This work demonstrates the feas…
This note elaborates the procedures involved in the derivation of breakup densities in nuclear fragmentation. It is stressed that the formalism employed in the analysis served only as a spectral fitting function and does not imply any specific reaction mechanism.
We investigated the transverse charge densities in the nucleon in nuclear matter within the framework of the in-medium modified Skyrme model. The medium modification of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors are first discussed. The results show that the form factors in nuclear matter fall off faster than those in free space, as the momentum transfer increases. As a result, the charge radii of the nucleon become larger, as the nuclear matter density increases. The transverse charge densities in the nucleon indicate that the size of the nucleon tends to bulge out in nuclear matter. This salie…
Particle-$γ$ coincidence experiments were performed at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory with the $^{181}$Ta(d,X) and $^{181}$Ta($^{3}$He,X) reactions, to measure the nuclear level densities (NLDs) and $γ$-ray strength functions ($γ$SFs) of $^{180, 181, 182}$Ta using the Oslo method. The Back-shifted Fermi-Gas, Constant Temperature plus Fermi Gas, and Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov plus Combinatorial models where used for the absolute normalisations of the experimental NLDs at the neutron separation energies. The NLDs and $γ$SFs are used to calculate the corresponding $^{181}$Ta(n,$γ$) cross sections and…
Within the interacting Fermi gas model for isospin asymmetric nuclear matter, effects of the in-medium three-body interaction and the two-body short-range tensor force due to the $ρ$ meson exchange as well as the short-range nucleon correlation on the high-density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy are demonstrated respectively in a transparent way. Possible physics origins of the extremely uncertain nuclear symmetry energy at supra-saturation densities are discussed.
We extract the mass-dependent symmetry energy coefficients $a_{\text{sym}}({A})$ with the nuclear mass differences reducing the uncertainties as far as possible. The estimated $a_{\text{sym}}({A})$ of $^{208}\text{Pb}$ is $22.4\pm 0.3 $ MeV, which is further used to analyze the density-dependent nuclear matter symmetry energy at subsaturation densities. The slope parameter of the symmetry energy at the saturation density $ρ_{0}$ is $L=50.0\pm15.5$ MeV. Furthermore, it is found that, at the density of $ρ=0.69ρ_{0}=0.11$fm$^{-3}$, the symmetry energy $S(ρ=0.11\text{fm}^{-3})=25.98\pm0.01$ MeV an…
Some recent progress and open questions in extracting and understanding the new physics underlying the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy from laboratory experiments are discussed.
The Glauber model analysis of the elastic $^{6,8}$He+$p$ scattering data at energies around 700 MeV/nucleon, measured in two separate experiments at GSI-Darmstadt, has been done using several phenomenological parametrizations of the nuclear matter density. By taking into account the new data points measured at the high momentum transfer, the nuclear matter radii of $^{6,8}$He were accurately determined from the Glauber model analysis of the data, with the spin-orbital interaction explicitly taken into account. The well-known geometry for the core and dineutron halo has been used with the new p…
We derive the free energy for fermions and bosons from fragmentation data. Inspired by the symmetry and pairing energy of the Weizsacker mass formula we obtain the free energy of fermions (nucleons) and bosons (alphas and deuterons) using Landau's free energy approach. We confirm previously obtained results for fermions and show that the free energy for alpha particles is negative and very close to the free energy for ideal Bose gases. Deuterons behave more similarly to fermions (positive free energy) rather than bosons. This is due to their low binding energy, which makes them very 'fragile',…
The gamma-strength functions and level densities in the quasi-continuum of 147;149Sm isotopes have been extracted from particle-coincidences using the Oslo method. The nuclei of interest were populated via (p,d) reactions on pure 148;150Sm targets and the reaction products were recorded by the Hyperion array. An upbend in the low-energy region of the gSF has been observed. The systematic analysis of the gSF for a range of Sm isotopes highlights the interplay between scissors mode and the upbend. Shell-model calculations show reasonable agreement with the experimental gSFs and confirm the corre…
Using a transport model coupled with a phase-space coalescence after-burner we study the triton-$^3$He ratio, relative and differential transverse flows in semi-central $^{132}Sn+^{124}Sn$ reactions at a beam energy of 400 MeV/A. The neutron-proton ratio, relative and differential flows are also discussed as a reference. We find that similar to the neutron-proton pairs the triton-$^3$He pairs also carry interesting information about the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. Moreover, the nuclear symmetry energy affects more strongly the t-$^3$He relative and differential flows tha…
A microscopic method for calculating nuclear level densities (NLD) is developed, based on the framework of energy density functionals. Intrinsic level densities are computed from single-quasiparticle spectra obtained in a finite-temperature self-consistent mean-field (SCMF) calculation that takes into account nuclear deformation, and is specified by the choice of the energy density functional (EDF) and pairing interaction. The total level density is calculated by convoluting the intrinsic density with the corresponding collective level density, determined by the eigenstates of a five-dimension…
Nuclear level densities are crucial for estimating statistical nuclear reaction rates. The shell model Monte Carlo method is a powerful approach for microscopic calculation of state densities in very large model spaces. However, these state densities include the spin degeneracy of each energy level, whereas experiments often measure level densities in which each level is counted just once. To enable the direct comparison of theory with experiments, we introduce a method to calculate directly the level density in the shell model Monte Carlo approach. The method employs a projection on the minim…
According to the Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem, the symmetry energy and its density slope can be decomposed uniquely in terms of the single-nucleon potential in asymmetric nuclear matter which, at normal density, can be constrained by the nucleon optical model potential extracted from analyzing the nucleon-nucleus scattering data. To more accurately extract information on the symmetry energy and its density slope at normal density from neutron-nucleus scattering data, going beyond the well-known Lane potential, we include consistently the second order terms in isospin asymmetry in both the optic…
We show that the enhancement of the saturation scale in large nuclei relative to the proton is significantly influenced by the effects of quantum evolution and the impact parameter dependence of dipole cross sections in high energy QCD. We demonstrate that there is a strong A dependence in diffractive deeply inelastic scattering and discuss its sensitivity to the measurement of the recoil nucleus.
Equilibrium constants for Hydrogen and Helium isotopes as a function of density and temperature are measured in the framework of the study made by Qin et al. [Qin L et al 2012 Phys. Rev. Lett. 108 172701]. We review and comment on all stages of the analysis and conclude that our measurements are not inconsistent with Qin et al. results. Improvements are being made to the initial analysis and we raise the issue of the binding energies which has to be clarified.
Within an isospin- and momentum-dependent hadronic transport model it is shown that the recent FOPI data on the $π^-/π^+$ ratio in central heavy-ion collisions at SIS/GSI energies (Willy Reisdorf {\it et al.}, NPA {\bf 781}, 459 (2007)) provide circumstantial evidence suggesting a rather soft nuclear symmetry energy \esym at $ρ\geq 2ρ_0$ compared to the Akmal-Pandharipande-Ravenhall prediction. Some astrophysical implications and the need for further experimental confirmations are discussed.
Double strangeness $Ξ^{-}$ production in Au+Au collisions at 2, 4, and 6 GeV/nucleon incident beam energies is studied with the pure hadron cascade version of a multi-phase transport model. It is found that due to larger nuclear compression, the model with the soft equation of state (EoS) gives larger yields of both single strangeness ($K^{+}$ and $Λ+Σ^{0}$) and double strangeness $Ξ^{-}$. The sensitivity of the double strangeness $Ξ^{-}$ to the EoS is evidently larger than that of $K^{+}$ or $Λ+Σ^{0}$ since the phase-space distribution of produced $Ξ^{-}$ is more compact compared to those of …
The density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy governs important aspects of very neutron rich systems such as heavy nuclei and their collisions, neutron stars and their mergers. Many analyses of experimental data have generated constraints on the symmetry energy and its first derivative at saturation density, rho_0 ~ 2.7xE14 g/cm3. We show that each analysis does not accurately constrain the symmetry energy at rho_0, but rather at a lower density, rho_s, that is most sensitively probed by that analysis. Using published constraints on the symmetry energy and its first derivative at rho_0…
By directly inverting several neutron star observables in the three-dimensional parameter space for the Equation of State of super-dense neutron-rich nuclear matter, we show that the lower radius limit for PSR J0740+6620 of mass $2.08\pm 0.07~M_{\odot}$ from Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER)'s very recent observation sets a much tighter lower boundary than previously known for nuclear symmetry energy in the density range of $(1.0\sim 3.0)$ times the saturation density $ρ_0$ of nuclear matter. The super-soft symmetry energy leading to the formation of proton polarons in this de…
We propose a new method to determine the spatially or impact-parameter dependent nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) using the double parton scattering (DPS) processes in high-energy heavy-ion (proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus) collisions. We derive a simple generic DPS formula in nuclear collisions by accommodating both the nuclear collision geometry and the spatially dependent nuclear modification effect, under the assumption that the impact-parameter dependence of nPDFs is only related to the nuclear thickness function. While the geometric effect is widely adopted, the impact of…

We construct the QCD equation of state at finite chemical potentials including net baryon, electric charge, and strangeness, based on the conserved charge susceptibilities determined from lattice QCD simulations and the equation of state of the hadron resonance gas model. For the application to relativistic heavy ion collisions we consider the situation of strangeness neutrality and matter with a fixed electric charge-to-baryon ratio, resembling that of heavy nuclei. The importance of finite electric charge and strangeness chemical potentials for particle production in heavy ion collisions is …
The beam energy dependence of $v_4$ (the quadrupole moment of the transverse radial flow) is sensitive to the nuclear equation of state (EoS) in mid-central Au + Au collisions at the energy range of $3 < \sqrt{s_{NN}} < 30$ GeV, which is investigated within the hadronic transport model JAM. Different equations of state, namely, a free hadron gas, a first-order phase transition and a crossover are compared. An enhancement of $v_4$ at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}\approx 6$ GeV is predicted for an EoS with a first-order phase transition. This enhanced $v_4$ flow is driven by both the enhancement of $v_2$ as we…
Nuclear structure observables usually most effectively probe the properties of nuclear matter at subsaturation densities rather than at saturation density. We demonstrate that the electric dipole polarizibility $α_ {\text{D}}$ in $^{208}$Pb is sensitive to both the magnitude $E_{\text{sym}}(ρ_{\text{c}})$ and density slope $L(ρ_{\text{c}})$ of the symmetry energy at a subsaturation cross density $ρ_{\text{c}} = 0.11$ fm$^{-3}$. Using the experimental data of $α_ {\text{D}}$ in $^{208}$Pb from RCNP and the recent accurate constraint of $E_{\text{sym}}(ρ_{\text{c}})$ from the binding energy diff…
Within the newly updated version of the Ultra-relativistic quantum molecular dynamics (UrQMD) model in which the Skyrme potential energy-density functional is introduced, the yield ratio between $^3$H and $^3$He clusters emitted from central $^{40}$Ca+$^{40}$Ca, $^{96}$Zr+$^{96}$Zr, $^{96}$Ru+$^{96}$Ru, and $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions in the beam energy range from 0.12 to 1 GeV$/$nucleon is studied. The recent FOPI data for the $^3$H$/$$^3$He ratio are compared with UrQMD calculations using 13 Skyrme interactions (all exhibiting similar values of iso-scalar incompressibility but very diff…
An extension of the generalized relativistic mean-field (gRMF) model with density dependent couplings is introduced in order to describe thermodynamical properties and the composition of dense nuclear matter for astrophysical applications. Bound states of light nuclei and two-nucleon scattering correlations are considered as explicit degrees of freedom in the thermodynamical potential. They are represented by quasiparticles with medium-dependent properties. The model describes the correct low-density limit given by the virial equation of state (VEoS) and reproduces RMF results around nuclear s…
Experimental studies of hypernuclear dynamics, besides being essential for the understanding of strong interactions in the strange sector, have important astrophysical implications. The observation of neutron stars with masses exceeding two solar masses poses a serious challenge to the models of hyperon dynamics in dense nuclear matter, many of which predict a maximum mass incompatible with the data. In this article, it is argued that valuable new insight may be gained extending the experimental studies of kaon electro production from nuclei to include the $\isotope[208][]{\rm Pb}(e,e^\prime K…
Using relativistic Hartree-Fock (RHF) approximation, we study the effect of Fock terms on the nuclear properties not only around the saturation density, $ρ_{0}$, but also at higher densities. In particular, we investigate how the momentum dependence due to the exchange contribution affects the nuclear symmetry energy and its slope parameter, using the Lorentz-covariant decomposition of nucleon self-energies in an extended version of the RHF model, in which the exchange terms are adjusted so as to reproduce the single-nucleon potential at $ρ_{0}$. We find that the Fock contribution suppresses t…
The nuclear mass dependence of the number of short-range correlated (SRC) proton-proton (pp) and proton-neutron (pn) pairs in nuclei is a sensitive probe of the dynamics of short-range pairs in the ground state of atomic nuclei. This work presents an analysis of electroinduced single-proton and two-proton knockout measurements off 12C, 27Al, 56Fe, and 208Pb in kinematics dominated by scattering off SRC pairs. The nuclear mass dependence of the observed A(e,e'pp)/12C(e,e'pp) cross-section ratios and the extracted number of pp- and pn-SRC pairs are much softer than the mass dependence of the tot…
We reexamine effects of the $ρ-ω$ meson mixing mediated by nucleon polarizations on the symmetry energy in isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter. Taking into account the rearrangement term neglected in previous studies by others, we evaluate the $ρ-ω$ mixing angle in a novel way within the Relativistic Mean-Field Models with and without chiral limits. It is found that the symmetry energy is significantly softened at high densities contrary to the finding in earlier studies. As the first step of going beyond the lowest-order calculations, we also solve the RPA equation for the $ρ-ω$ mixing. In this…
Using in-medium hadron properties according to the Brown-Rho scaling due to the chiral symmetry restoration at high densities and considering naturalness of the coupling constants, we have newly constructed several relativistic mean-field Lagrangians with chiral limits. The model parameters are adjusted such that the symmetric part of the resulting equation of state at supra-normal densities is consistent with that required by the collective flow data from high energy heavy-ion reactions, while the resulting density dependence of the symmetry energy at sub-saturation densities agrees with that…
We construct the QCD equation of state at finite chemical potentials including net baryon, electric charge, and strangeness based on the results of lattice QCD simulations and the hadron resonance gas model. The situation of strangeness neutrality and a fixed charge-to-baryon ratio, which resembles that of heavy nuclei, is considered for the application to relativistic heavy-ion collisions. This increases the values of baryon chemical potential compared to the case of vanishing strangeness and electric charge chemical potentials, modifying the fireball trajectory in the phase diagram. We perfo…
Realistic nuclear level densities (NLDs) obtained within the spectral distribution method (SDM) are employed to study nuclear processes of astrophysical interest. The merit of SDM lies in the fact that the NLDs corresponding to many body shell model Hamiltonian consisting of residual interaction can be obtained for the full configurational space without recourse to the exact diagnolization of huge matrices. We calculate NLDs and s-wave neutron resonance spacings which agree reasonably well with the available experimental data. By employing these NLDs, we compute reaction cross-sections and ast…
We report on an analysis of the impact of available experimental data on hard processes in proton-lead collisions during Run I at the Large Hadron Collider on nuclear modifications of parton distribution functions. Our analysis is restricted to the EPS09 and DSSZ global fits. The measurements that we consider comprise production of massive gauge bosons, jets, charged hadrons and pions. This is the first time a study of nuclear PDFs includes this number of different observables. The goal of the paper is twofold: i) checking the description of the data by nPDFs, as well as the relevance of these…
We point out similarity of thermodynamic conditions reached in intermediate energy nuclear collisions and in supernova explosions. We show that a statistical approach, which has been previously applied for nuclear multifragmentation reactions, can be very useful for description of electro-neutral stellar matter. Then properties of hot unstable nuclei extracted from analysis of multifragmentation data can be used for construction of a realistic equation of state of supernova matter.
By numerically inverting the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov (TOV) equation using an explicitly isospin-dependent parametric Equation of State (EOS) of dense neutron-rich nucleonic matter, a restricted EOS parameter space is established using observational constraints on the radius, maximum mass, tidal polarizability and causality condition of neutron stars (NSs). The constraining band obtained for the pressure as a function of energy (baryon) density is in good agreement with that extracted recently by the LIGO+Virgo Collaborations from their improved analyses of the NS tidal polarizability in GW17…
We update our previous studies of nuclear-matter effects on J/Psi production in proton-nucleus for the recent LHC pPb runs at sqrt(s_NN)=5 TeV. We have analysed the effects of the modification of the gluon PDFs in nucleus, using an exact kinematics for a 2->2 process, namely g+g->J/Psi+g as expected from LO pQCD. This allows to constrain the transverse-momentum while computing the nuclear modification factor for different rapidities, unlike with the usual simplified kinematics. Owing to the absence of measurement in pp collisions at the same sqrt(s_NN) and owing to the expected significant unc…
