We present our winning submission to the First International Workshop on Bodily Expressed Emotion Understanding (BEEU) challenge. Based on recent literature on the effect of context/environment on emotion, as well as visual representations with semantic meaning using word embeddings, we extend the framework of Temporal Segment Network to accommodate these. Our method is verified on the validation set of the Body Language Dataset (BoLD) and achieves 0.26235 Emotion Recognition Score on the test set, surpassing the previous best result of 0.2530.
We present Wav2Lip-Emotion, a video-to-video translation architecture that modifies facial expressions of emotion in videos of speakers. Previous work modifies emotion in images, uses a single image to produce a video with animated emotion, or puppets facial expressions in videos with landmarks from a reference video. However, many use cases such as modifying an actor's performance in post-production, coaching individuals to be more animated speakers, or touching up emotion in a teleconference require a video-to-video translation approach. We explore a method to maintain speakers' lip movement…

The audio-video based emotion recognition aims to classify a given video into basic emotions. In this paper, we describe our approaches in EmotiW 2019, which mainly explores emotion features and feature fusion strategies for audio and visual modality. For emotion features, we explore audio feature with both speech-spectrogram and Log Mel-spectrogram and evaluate several facial features with different CNN models and different emotion pretrained strategies. For fusion strategies, we explore intra-modal and cross-modal fusion methods, such as designing attention mechanisms to highlights important…

Emotion recognition can provide crucial information about the user in many applications when building human-computer interaction (HCI) systems. Most of current researches on visual emotion recognition are focusing on exploring facial features. However, context information including surrounding environment and human body can also provide extra clues to recognize emotion more accurately. Inspired by "sequence to sequence model" for neural machine translation, which models input and output sequences by an encoder and a decoder in recurrent neural network (RNN) architecture respectively, a novel a…

Despite previous success in generating audio-driven talking heads, most of the previous studies focus on the correlation between speech content and the mouth shape. Facial emotion, which is one of the most important features on natural human faces, is always neglected in their methods. In this work, we present Emotional Video Portraits (EVP), a system for synthesizing high-quality video portraits with vivid emotional dynamics driven by audios. Specifically, we propose the Cross-Reconstructed Emotion Disentanglement technique to decompose speech into two decoupled spaces, i.e., a duration-indep…
With the widespread of user-generated Internet videos, emotion recognition in those videos attracts increasing research efforts. However, most existing works are based on framelevel visual features and/or audio features, which might fail to model the temporal information, e.g. characteristics accumulated along time. In order to capture video temporal information, in this paper, we propose to analyse features in frequency domain transformed by discrete Fourier transform (DFT features). Frame-level features are firstly extract by a pre-trained deep convolutional neural network (CNN). Then, time …

Translating visual data into natural language is essential for machines to understand the world and interact with humans. In this work, a comprehensive study is conducted on video paragraph captioning, with the goal to generate paragraph-level descriptions for a given video. However, current researches mainly focus on detecting objective facts, ignoring the needs to establish the logical associations between sentences and to discover more accurate emotions related to video contents. Such a problem impairs fluent and abundant expressions of predicted captions, which are far below human language…
We consider the task of dimensional emotion recognition on video data using deep learning. While several previous methods have shown the benefits of training temporal neural network models such as recurrent neural networks (RNNs) on hand-crafted features, few works have considered combining convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with RNNs. In this work, we present a system that performs emotion recognition on video data using both CNNs and RNNs, and we also analyze how much each neural network component contributes to the system's overall performance. We present our findings on videos from the A…
This paper presents a methodology to detect personality and basic emotion characteristics of crowds in video sequences. Firstly, individuals are detected and tracked, then groups are recognized and characterized. Such information is then mapped to OCEAN dimensions, used to find out personality and emotion in videos, based on OCC emotion models. Although it is a clear challenge to validate our results with real life experiments, we evaluate our method with the available literature information regarding OCEAN values of different Countries and also emergent Personal distance among people. Hence, …

Understanding human emotions is a crucial ability for intelligent robots to provide better human-robot interactions. The existing works are limited to trimmed video-level emotion classification, failing to locate the temporal window corresponding to the emotion. In this paper, we introduce a new task, named Temporal Emotion Localization in videos~(TEL), which aims to detect human emotions and localize their corresponding temporal boundaries in untrimmed videos with aligned subtitles. TEL presents three unique challenges compared to temporal action localization: 1) The emotions have extremely v…
In this paper we describe a solution to our entry for the emotion recognition challenge EmotiW 2017. We propose an ensemble of several models, which capture spatial and audio features from videos. Spatial features are captured by convolutional neural networks, pretrained on large face recognition datasets. We show that usage of strong industry-level face recognition networks increases the accuracy of emotion recognition. Using our ensemble we improve on the previous best result on the test set by about 1 %, achieving a 60.03 % classification accuracy without any use of visual temporal informat…
Our experiment adapts several popular deep learning methods as well as some traditional methods on the problem of video emotion recognition. In our experiment, we use the CNN-LSTM architecture for visual information extraction and classification and utilize traditional methods such as for audio feature classification. For multimodal fusion, we use the traditional Support Vector Machine. Our experiment yields a good result on the AFEW 6.0 Dataset.
In the latest social networks, more and more people prefer to express their emotions in videos through text, speech, and rich facial expressions. Multimodal video emotion analysis techniques can help understand users' inner world automatically based on human expressions and gestures in images, tones in voices, and recognized natural language. However, in the existing research, the acoustic modality has long been in a marginal position as compared to visual and textual modalities. That is, it tends to be more difficult to improve the contribution of the acoustic modality for the whole multimoda…
Understanding the emotional impact of movies has become important for affective movie analysis, ranking, and indexing. Methods for recognizing evoked emotions are usually trained on human annotated data. Concretely, viewers watch video clips and have to manually annotate the emotions they experienced while watching the videos. Then, the common practice is to aggregate the different annotations, by computing average scores or majority voting, and train and test models on these aggregated annotations. With this procedure a single aggregated evoked emotion annotation is obtained per each video. H…

Group-level emotion recognition (ER) is a growing research area as the demands for assessing crowds of all sizes are becoming an interest in both the security arena as well as social media. This work extends the earlier ER investigations, which focused on either group-level ER on single images or within a video, by fully investigating group-level expression recognition on crowd videos. In this paper, we propose an effective deep feature level fusion mechanism to model the spatial-temporal information in the crowd videos. In our approach, the fusing process is performed on the deep feature doma…
We introduce a new dataset for the emotional artificial intelligence research: identity-free video dataset for Micro-Gesture Understanding and Emotion analysis (iMiGUE). Different from existing public datasets, iMiGUE focuses on nonverbal body gestures without using any identity information, while the predominant researches of emotion analysis concern sensitive biometric data, like face and speech. Most importantly, iMiGUE focuses on micro-gestures, i.e., unintentional behaviors driven by inner feelings, which are different from ordinary scope of gestures from other gesture datasets which are …

Spatial-temporal feature learning is of vital importance for video emotion recognition. Previous deep network structures often focused on macro-motion which extends over long time scales, e.g., on the order of seconds. We believe integrating structures capturing information about both micro- and macro-motion will benefit emotion prediction, because human perceive both micro- and macro-expressions. In this paper, we propose to combine micro- and macro-motion features to improve video emotion recognition with a two-stream recurrent network, named MIMAMO (Micro-Macro-Motion) Net. Specifically, sm…

Emotion is a key element in user-generated videos. However, it is difficult to understand emotions conveyed in such videos due to the complex and unstructured nature of user-generated content and the sparsity of video frames expressing emotion. In this paper, for the first time, we study the problem of transferring knowledge from heterogeneous external sources, including image and textual data, to facilitate three related tasks in understanding video emotion: emotion recognition, emotion attribution and emotion-oriented summarization. Specifically, our framework (1) learns a video encoding fro…

This paper presents an audiovisual-based emotion recognition hybrid network. While most of the previous work focuses either on using deep models or hand-engineered features extracted from images, we explore multiple deep models built on both images and audio signals. Specifically, in addition to convolutional neural networks (CNN) and recurrent neutral networks (RNN) trained on facial images, the hybrid network also contains one SVM classifier trained on holistic acoustic feature vectors, one long short-term memory network (LSTM) trained on short-term feature sequences extracted from segmented…

The portrayal of negative emotions such as anger can vary widely between cultures and contexts, depending on the acceptability of expressing full-blown emotions rather than suppression to maintain harmony. The majority of emotional datasets collect data under the broad label ``anger", but social signals can range from annoyed, contemptuous, angry, furious, hateful, and more. In this work, we curated the first in-the-wild multicultural video dataset of emotions, and deeply explored anger-related emotional expressions by asking culture-fluent annotators to label the videos with 6 labels and 13 e…

There is an increasing scientific interest in automatically analysing and understanding human behavior, with particular reference to the evolution of facial expressions and the recognition of the corresponding emotions. In this paper we propose a technique based on Functional ANOVA to extract significant patterns of face muscles movements, in order to identify the emotions expressed by actors in recorded videos. We determine if there are time-related differences on expressions among emotional groups by using a functional F-test. Such results are the first step towards the construction of a rel…
In this article, the results of our team for the fifth Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW) competition are presented. The usage of the pre-trained convolutional networks from the EmotiEffNet family for frame-level feature extraction is studied. In particular, we propose an ensemble of a multi-layered perceptron and the LightAutoML-based classifier. The post-processing by smoothing the results for sequential frames is implemented. Experimental results for the large-scale Aff-Wild2 database demonstrate that our model achieves a much greater macro-averaged F1-score for facial expressio…
In this work we tackle the task of video-based visual emotion recognition in the wild. Standard methodologies that rely solely on the extraction of bodily and facial features often fall short of accurate emotion prediction in cases where the aforementioned sources of affective information are inaccessible due to head/body orientation, low resolution and poor illumination. We aspire to alleviate this problem by leveraging visual context in the form of scene characteristics and attributes, as part of a broader emotion recognition framework. Temporal Segment Networks (TSN) constitute the backbone…

Several works have developed end-to-end pipelines for generating lip-synced talking faces with various real-world applications, such as teaching and language translation in videos. However, these prior works fail to create realistic-looking videos since they focus little on people's expressions and emotions. Moreover, these methods' effectiveness largely depends on the faces in the training dataset, which means they may not perform well on unseen faces. To mitigate this, we build a talking face generation framework conditioned on a categorical emotion to generate videos with appropriate expres…

User emotion analysis toward videos is to automatically recognize the general emotional status of viewers from the multimedia content embedded in the online video stream. Existing works fall in two categories: 1) visual-based methods, which focus on visual content and extract a specific set of features of videos. However, it is generally hard to learn a mapping function from low-level video pixels to high-level emotion space due to great intra-class variance. 2) textual-based methods, which focus on the investigation of user-generated comments associated with videos. The learned word represent…

The continuous improvement of human-computer interaction technology makes it possible to compute emotions. In this paper, we introduce our submission to the CVPR 2023 Competition on Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW). Sentiment analysis in human-computer interaction should, as far as possible Start with multiple dimensions, fill in the single imperfect emotion channel, and finally determine the emotion tendency by fitting multiple results. Therefore, We exploited multimodal features extracted from video of different lengths from the competition dataset, including audio, pose and im…
