Using purely combinatorial methods we calculate the first degree cohomology of Specht modules indexed by two part partitions over fields of characteristic $p\ge 3$. These combinatorial methods also allow us to obtain an explicit description of all of the non-split extensions of the Specht module, $S^λ$, by the trivial module. Applying this work to partitions with more than two parts we are able to give an entirely combinatorial proof of the bound on the dimension of the first degree cohomology given by work of Donkin and Geranios. We also obtain as a corollary a result of Weber giving a far reaching condition determining partitions for which the first cohomology of the Specht module is trivial.
For a Specht module S^λfor the symmetric group Σ_d, the cohomology H^i(Σ_d, S^λ) is known only in degree i=0. We give a combinatorial criterion equivalent to the nonvanishing of the degree i=1 cohomology, valid in odd characteristic. Our condition generalizes James' solution in degree zero. We apply this combinatorial description to give some computations of Specht module cohomology, together with an explicit description of the corresponding modules. Finally we suggest some general conjectures that might be particularly amenable to proof using this description.
Cohomology of Specht modules for the symmetric group can be equated in low degrees with corresponding cohomology for the Borel subgroup B of the general linear group GL_d(k), but this has never been exploited to prove new symmetric group results. Using work of Doty on the submodule structure of symmetric powers of the natural GL_d(k) module together with work of Andersen on cohomology for B and its Frobenius kernels, we prove new results about H^i(Σ_d, S^λ). We recover work of James in the case i=0. Then we prove two stability theorems, one of which is a "generic cohomology" result for Specht …
We aim to construct an element satisfying Hemmer's combinatorial criterion for $H^1(\mathfrak{S}_n, S^λ)$ to be non-vanishing. In the process, we discover an unexpected and surprising link between the combinatorial theory of integral designs and the representation theory of the symmetric groups.
The Murnaghan--Nakayama rule is a combinatorial rule for the character values of symmetric groups. We give a new combinatorial proof by explicitly finding the trace of the representing matrices in the standard basis of Specht modules. This gives an essentially bijective proof of the rule. A key lemma is an extension of a straightening result proved by the second author to skew-tableaux. Our module theoretic methods also give short proofs of Pieri's rule and Young's rule.
We give a combinatorial description for when the Specht module of an arbitrary diagram admits a (complete) branching rule. This description, given in terms of the maximal rectangles of the diagram, generalizes all previously known branching rules for Specht modules, such as those given by Reiner and Shimozono for northwest diagrams and by the present author for forest diagrams.
We prove that the dimension of the Specht module of a forest $G$ is the same as the normalized volume of the matching polytope of $G$. We also associate to $G$ a symmetric function $s_G$ (analogous to the Schur symmetric function $s_λ$ for a partition $λ$) and investigate its combinatorial and representation-theoretic properties in relation to the Specht module and Schur module of $G$. We then use this to define notions of standard and semistandard tableaux for forests.
Let $Σ_d$ denote the symmetric group of degree $d$ and let $K$ be a field of positive characteristic $p$. For $p>2$ we give an explicit description of the first cohomology group $H^1(Σ_d,{\rm{Sp}}(λ))$, of the Specht module ${\rm{Sp}}(λ)$ over $K$, labelled by a partition $λ$ of $d$. We also give a sufficient condition for the cohomology to be non-zero for $p=2$ and we find a lower bound for the dimension. Our method is to proceed by comparison with the cohomology for the general linear group $G(n)$ over $K$ and then to reduce to the calculation of ${\rm{Ext}}^1_{B(n)}(S^d E,K_λ)$, where $B(n)…
We compare two important bases of an irreducible representation of the symmetric group: the web basis and the Specht basis. The web basis has its roots in the Temperley-Lieb algebra and knot-theoretic considerations. The Specht basis is a classic algebraic and combinatorial construction of symmetric group representations which arises in this context through the geometry of varieties called Springer fibers. We describe a graph that encapsulates combinatorial relations between each of these bases, prove that there is a unique way (up to scaling) to map the Specht basis into the web representatio…
Regarding the Specht modules associated to the two-row partition $(n,n)$, we provide a combinatorial path model to study the transitioning matrix from the tableau basis to the $A_1$-web basis (i.e. cup diagrams), and prove that the entries in this matrix are positive in the upper-triangular portion with respect to a certain partial order.
We review a class of modules for the wreath product S(m) wr S(n) of two symmetric groups which are analogous to the Specht modules of the symmetric group, and prove a pair of branching rules for this family of modules. These branching rules describe the behaviour of these wreath product Specht modules under restriction to the wreath products S(m-1) wr S(n) and S(m) wr S(n-1). In particular, we see that these restrictions of wreath product Specht modules have Specht module filtrations, and we obtain combinatorial interpretations of the multiplicities in these filtrations.
Let n geq 1, let lambda be a partition of n, let mu be a partition arising from lambda by a downwards shift of two boxes situated at the bottom of a column. We give a formula for a ZS_n-linear morphism of order m between the corresponding Specht modules over Z/(m), where m is the box shift length (divided by two in certain combinatorially specified cases). Reformulated, this yields an extension of the corresponding Specht modules over Z of order m in Ext^1.
The author and Nakano recently proved that multiplicities in a Specht filtration of a symmetric group module are well-defined precisely when the characteristic is at least five. This result suggested the possibility of a symmetric group theory analogous to that of good filtrations and tilting modules for $GL_n(k)$. This paper is an initial attempt at such a theory. We obtain two sufficient conditions that ensure a module has a Specht filtration, and a formula for the filtration multiplicities. We then study the categories of modules that satisfy the conditions, in the process obtaining a new r…
In [Boltje,Hartmann: Permutation resolutions for Specht modules, J. Algebraic Combin. 34 (2011), 141-162], a chain complex was constructed in a combinatorial way which conjecturally is a resolution of the (dual of the) integral Specht module for the symmetric group in terms of permutation modules. In this paper we extend the definition of the chain complex to the integral Iwahori Hecke algebra and prove the same partial exactness results that were proved in the symmetric group case. A complete proof of the exactness conjecture in the symmetric group case was recently given by Santana and Yudin…
This paper studies the vertices, in the sense defined by J. A. Green, of Specht modules for symmetric groups. The main theorem gives, for each indecomposable non-projective Specht module, a large subgroup contained in one of its vertices. A corollary of this theorem is a new way to determine the defect groups of symmetric groups. We also use it to find the Green correspondents of a particular family of simple Specht modules; as a corollary, we get a new proof of the Brauer correspondence for blocks of the symmetric group. The proof of the main theorem uses the Brauer homomorphism on modules, a…
For any convex preorder on the set of positive roots of affine type A, we classify and construct all associated cuspidal and semicuspidal skew shapes. These combinatorial objects correspond to cuspidal and semicuspidal skew Specht modules for the Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebra of affine type A. Cuspidal skew shapes are ribbons, and we show that every skew shape has a unique ordered tiling by cuspidal ribbons. This tiling data provides an upper bound, in the bilexicographic order on Kostant partitions, for labels of simple factors of Specht modules.
Over fields of characteristic zero, there are well known constructions of the irreducible representations, due to A Young, and of irreducible modules, called Specht modules, due to W Specht, for the symmetric groups $S_{n}$ which are based on elegant combinatorial concepts connected with Young tableaux etc.(see, e.g.{\bf [13]}). James {\bf [12]} extended these ideas to construct irreducible representations and modules over arbitrary field. Al-Aamily, Morris and Peel {\bf [1]} showed how this construction could be extended cover the Weyl groups of type $B_{n}$. In {\bf [14]} Morris described a …
Over fields of characteristic zero, there are well known construction of the irreducible representations and of irreducible modules, called Specht modules for the symmetric groups $S_{n}$ which are based on elegant combinatorial concepts connected with Young tableaux etc.(see, e.g.[10]). James [8] extended these ideas to construct irreducible representations and modules over arbitrary field. Al-Aamily, Morris and Peel [ 1 ] showed how this construction could be extended to deal with the Weyl groups of type $B_{n}$. In [11] the second author described a possible extension of James' work for Wey…
The following thesis contains results on the combinatorial representation theory of the finite Hecke algebra $H_n(q)$. In Chapter 2 simple combinatorial descriptions are given which determine when a Specht module corresponding to a partition $λ$ is irreducible. This is done by extending the results of James and Mathas. These descriptions depend on the crystal of the basic representation of the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_\ell}$. In Chapter 3 these results are extended to determine which irreducible modules have a realization as a Specht module. To do this, a new condition of irr…
For the general linear group $GL_n(k)$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p$, there are two types of "twisting" operations that arise naturally on partitions. These are of the form $λ\rightarrow pλ$ and $λ\rightarrow λ+ p^rτ$ The first comes from the Frobenius twist, and the second arises in various tensor product situations, often from tensoring with the Steinberg module. This paper surveys and adds to an intriguing series of seemingly unrelated symmetric group results where this partition combinatorics arises, but with no structural explanation for it. This includes co…
We construct a new family of homomorphisms from Specht modules into Foulkes modules for the symmetric group. These homomorphisms are used to give a combinatorial description of the minimal partitions (in the dominance order) which label irreducible characters appearing as summands of the characters of Foulkes modules. The homomorphisms are defined using certain families of subsets of the natural numbers. These families are of independent interest; we prove a number of combinatorial results concerning them.
We identify the ring of odd symmetric functions introduced by Ellis and Khovanov as the space of skew polynomials fixed by a natural action of the Hecke algebra at q=-1. This allows us to define graded modules over the Hecke algebra at q=-1 that are `odd' analogs of the cohomology of type A Springer varieties. The graded module associated to the full flag variety corresponds to the quotient of the skew polynomial ring by the left ideal of nonconstant odd symmetric functions. The top degree component of the odd cohomology of Springer varieties is identified with the corresponding Specht module …
In the computation of the intersection cohomology of Shimura varieties, or of the $L^2$ cohomology of equal rank locally symmetric spaces, combinatorial identities involving averaged discrete series characters of real reductive groups play a large technical role. These identities can become very complicated and are not always well-understood (see for example the appendix of [8]). We propose a geometric approach to these identities in the case of Siegel modular varieties using the combinatorial properties of the Coxeter complex of the symmetric group. Apart from some introductory remarks about …
A purely combinatorial construction of the quantum cohomology ring of the flag manifold $G/B$ is presented. We show that the ring we construct is commutative, associative and satisfies the usual grading condition. By using results of two of our previous papers, we obtain a presentation of this ring in terms of generators and relations, as well as formulas for quantum Giambelli polynomials. We show that these polynomials satisfy a certain orthogonality property, which - for G=SL_n(C) - was proved previously by Fomin, Gelfand and Postnikov.
The irreducible representations of symmetric groups can be realized as certain graded pieces of invariant rings, equivalently as global sections of line bundles on partial flag varieties. There are various ways to choose useful bases of such Specht modules $S^λ$. Particularly powerful are web bases, which make important connections with cluster algebras and quantum link invariants. Unfortunately, web bases are only known in very special cases -- essentially, only the cases $λ=(d,d)$ and $λ=(d,d,d)$. Building on work of B. Rhoades (2017), we construct an apparent web basis of invariant polynomi…
We show that $\bigoplus_{n \ge 0} {\mathrm H}^t({\bf GL}_n({\bf F}_q), {\bf F}_\ell)$ canonically admits the structure of a module over the $q$-divided power algebra (assuming $q$ is invertible in ${\bf F}_{\ell}$), and that, as such, it is free and (for $q \neq 2$) generated in degrees $\le t$. As a corollary, we show that the cohomology of a finitely generated ${\bf VI}$-module in non-describing characteristic is eventually periodic in $n$. We apply this to obtain a new result on the cohomology of unipotent Specht modules.
A sequence of $S_n$-representations $\{V_n\}$ is said to be uniformly representation stable if the decomposition of $V_n = \bigoplus_μ c_{μ,n} V(μ)_n$ into irreducible representations is independent of $n$ for each $μ$---that is, the multiplicities $c_{μ,n}$ are eventually independent of $n$ for each $μ$. Church-Ellenberg-Farb proved that the cohomology of flag varieties (the so-called diagonal coinvariant algebra) is uniformly representation stable. We generalize their result from flag varieties to all Springer fibers. More precisely, we show that for any increasing subsequence of Young diagr…
This paper explains the relation between the fusion product of symmetric power sl(n) evaluation modules, as defined by Feigin and Loktev, and the graded coordinate ring R(mu), which describes the cohomology ring of the flag variety Fl(mu) of GL(N). The graded multiplicity spaces appearing in the decomposition of the fusion product into irreducible sl(n)-modules are identified with the multiplicity spaces of the Specht modules in R(mu). This proves that the Kostka polynomial gives the character of the fusion product in this case. In the case of the product of fundamental evaluation modules, we …
Let $SL_2$ be the rank one simple algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. The paper presents a new method for computing the dimension of the cohomology spaces $\text{H}^n(SL_2,V(m))$ for Weyl $SL_2$-modules $V(m)$. We provide a closed formula for $\text{dim}\text{H}^n(SL_2,V(m))$ when $n\le 2p-3$ and show that this dimension is bounded by the $(n+1)$-th Fibonacci number. This formula is then used to compute $\text{dim}\text{H}^n(SL_2, V(m))$ for $n=1, 2,$ or $3$. For $n>2p-3$, an exponential bound, only depending on $n$, is obtained for $\text{di…
We give a combinatorial description (including explicit differential-form bases) for the cohomology groups of the space of n distinct nonzero complex numbers, with coefficients in rank-one local systems which are of finite monodromy around the coordinate hyperplanes and trivial monodromy around all other hyperplanes. In the case where the local system is equivariant for the symmetric group, we write the cohomology groups as direct sums of inductions of one-dimensional characters of subgroups. This relies on an equivariant description of the Orlik-Solomon algebras of full monomial reflection gr…
A famous theorem of Nakaoka asserts that the cohomology of the symmetric group stabilizes. The first author generalized this theorem to non-trivial coefficient systems, in the form of $\mathrm{FI}$-modules over a field, though one now obtains periodicity of the cohomology instead of stability. In this paper, we further refine these results. Our main theorem states that if $M$ is a finitely generated $\mathrm{FI}$-module over a noetherian ring $\mathbf{k}$ then $\bigoplus_{n \ge 0} \mathrm{H}^t(S_n, M_n)$ admits the structure of a $\mathbf{D}$-module, where $\mathbf{D}$ is the divided power alg…
Dendriform coalgebras are the dual notion of dendriform algebras and are splitting of associative coalgebras. In this paper, we define a cohomology theory for dendriform coalgebras based on some combinatorial maps. We show that the cohomology with self coefficients governs the formal deformation of the structure. We also relate this cohomology with the cohomology of dendriform algebras, coHochschild (Cartier) cohomology of associative coalgebras and cohomology of Rota-Baxter coalgebras which we introduce in this paper. Finally, using those combinatorial maps, we introduce homotopy analogue of …
A simple, combinatorial construction of the sl(n)-WZNW fusion ring, also known as Verlinde algebra, is given. As a byproduct of the construction one obtains an isomorphism between the fusion ring and a particular quotient of the small quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian Gr(k,k+n). We explain how our approach naturally fits into known combinatorial descriptions of the quantum cohomology ring, by establishing what one could call a `Boson-Fermion-correspondence' between the two rings. We also present new recursion formulae for the structure constants of both rings, the fusion coefficients…
The parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for Grassmannians can be computed by counting Dyck partitions. We "lift" this combinatorial formula to the corresponding category of singular Soergel bimodules to obtain bases of the Hom spaces between indecomposable objects. In particular, we describe bases of intersection cohomology of Schubert varieties in Grassmannians parametrized by Dyck partitions which extend (after dualizing) the classical Schubert basis of the ordinary cohomology.
In this PhD thesis we will discuss some aspects in Commutative Algebra which have interactions with Algebraic Geometry, Representation Theory and Combinatorics. In particular, in the first chapter we will focus on understanding when certain cohomology modules vanish, a classical problem raised by Grothendieck. In the second chapter we will use local cohomology to study the connectedness behavior during a Groebner deformation and the arithmetical rank of certain varieties. In the third chapter, we will investigate the relations between the minors of a fixed size of a generic matrix by using too…
Let X be a locally symmetric space associated to a reductive algebraic group G defined over Q. L-modules are a combinatorial analogue of constructible sheaves on the reductive Borel-Serre compactification of X; they were introduced in [math.RT/0112251]. That paper also introduced the micro-support of an L-module, a combinatorial invariant that to a great extent characterizes the cohomology of the associated sheaf. The theory has been successfully applied to solve a number of problems concerning the intersection cohomology and weighted cohomology of the reductive Borel-Serre compactification [m…
Using a finite-dimensional Clifford algebra a new combinatorial product formula for the small quantum cohomology ring of the complex Grassmannian is presented. In particular, Gromov-Witten invariants can be expressed through certain elements in the Clifford algebra, this leads to a q-deformation of the Racah-Speiser algorithm allowing for their computation in terms of Kostka numbers. The second main result is a simple and explicit combinatorial formula for projecting product expansions in the quantum cohomology ring onto the sl(n) Verlinde algebra. This projection is non-trivial and amounts to…
We explain an elementary topological construction of the Springer representation on the homology of (topological) Springer fibers of types C and D in the case of nilpotent endomorphisms with two Jordan blocks. The Weyl group and component group actions admit a diagrammatic description in terms of cup diagrams which appear in the definition of arc algebras of types B and D. We determine the decomposition of the representations into irreducibles and relate our construction to classical Springer theory. As an application we obtain presentations of the cohomology rings of all two-block Springer fi…
