A purely combinatorial construction of the quantum cohomology ring of the flag manifold $G/B$ is presented. We show that the ring we construct is commutative, associative and satisfies the usual grading condition. By using results of two of our previous papers, we obtain a presentation of this ring in terms of generators and relations, as well as formulas for quantum Giambelli polynomials. We show that these polynomials satisfy a certain orthogonality property, which - for G=SL_n(C) - was proved previously by Fomin, Gelfand and Postnikov.
For a Specht module S^λfor the symmetric group Σ_d, the cohomology H^i(Σ_d, S^λ) is known only in degree i=0. We give a combinatorial criterion equivalent to the nonvanishing of the degree i=1 cohomology, valid in odd characteristic. Our condition generalizes James' solution in degree zero. We apply this combinatorial description to give some computations of Specht module cohomology, together with an explicit description of the corresponding modules. Finally we suggest some general conjectures that might be particularly amenable to proof using this description.
Using purely combinatorial methods we calculate the first degree cohomology of Specht modules indexed by two part partitions over fields of characteristic $p\ge 3$. These combinatorial methods also allow us to obtain an explicit description of all of the non-split extensions of the Specht module, $S^λ$, by the trivial module. Applying this work to partitions with more than two parts we are able to give an entirely combinatorial proof of the bound on the dimension of the first degree cohomology given by work of Donkin and Geranios. We also obtain as a corollary a result of Weber giving a far re…
In the computation of the intersection cohomology of Shimura varieties, or of the $L^2$ cohomology of equal rank locally symmetric spaces, combinatorial identities involving averaged discrete series characters of real reductive groups play a large technical role. These identities can become very complicated and are not always well-understood (see for example the appendix of [8]). We propose a geometric approach to these identities in the case of Siegel modular varieties using the combinatorial properties of the Coxeter complex of the symmetric group. Apart from some introductory remarks about …
We study local cohomology of rings of global sections of sheafs on the Alexandrov space of a partially ordered set. We give a criterion for a splitting of the local cohomology groups into summands determined by the cohomology of the poset and the local cohomology of the stalks. The face ring of a rational pointed fan can be considered as the ring of global sections of a flasque sheaf on the face poset of the fan. Thus we obtain a decomposition of the local cohomology of such face rings. Since the Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex is the face ring of a rational pointed fan, our main …
Motivated by definitions in mixed Hodge theory, we define the weight filtration and the monodromy weight filtration on the combinatorial intersection cohomology of a fan. These filtrations give a natural definition of the multivariable invariants of subdivisions of polytopes, lattice polytopes and fans, namely the mixed $h$-polynomial, the refined limit mixed $h^*$-polynomial, and the mixed $cd$-index, defined by Katz--Stapledon and Dornian--Katz--Tsang. Previously, only the refined limit mixed $h^*$-polynomial had a geometric interpretation, which came from filtrations on the cohomology of a …
The main result of this note gives an explicit presentation of the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring of the $(n-k,k)$ Springer variety (in type $A$) as a quotient of a polynomial ring by an ideal $I$, in the spirit of the well-known Borel presentation of the cohomology of the flag variety.
We review the theory of combinatorial intersection cohomology of fans developed by Barthel-Brasselet-Fieseler-Kaup, Bressler-Lunts, and Karu. This theory gives a substitute for the intersection cohomology of toric varieties which has all the expected formal properties but makes sense even for non-rational fans, which do not define a toric variety. As a result, a number of interesting results on the toric $g$ and $h$ polynomials have been extended from rational polytopes to general polytopes. We present explicit complexes computing the combinatorial IH in degrees one and two; the degree two com…
We use a Mayer-Vietoris-like spectral sequence to establish vanishing results for the cohomology of complements of linear and elliptic hyperplane arrangements, as part of a more general framework involving duality and abelian duality properties of spaces and groups. In the process, we consider cohomology of local systems with a general, Cohen-Macaulay-type condition. As a result, we recover known vanishing theorems for rank-1 local systems as well as group ring coefficients, and obtain new generalizations.
We give a combinatorial description of local cohomology modules of a graded module over a semigroup ring, with support at the graded maximal ideal. This combinatorial framework yields Hochster-type formulas for the Hilbert series of such local cohomology modules in terms of the homology of finitely many polyhedral cell complexes. A Cohen--Macaulay criterion immediately follows. We also provide an alternative proof of a result of [18] characterizing Cohen--Macaulay affine semigroup rings.
In this paper we study a relation between the cohomology ring of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety and Schubert polynomials. To describe an explicit presentation of the cohomology ring of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety, polynomials $f_{i,j}$ were introduced by Abe-Harada-Horiguchi-Masuda. We show that every polynomial $f_{i,j}$ is an alternating sum of certain Schubert polynomials.
Suppose a compact torus $T$ acts on a closed smooth manifold $M$. Under certain conditions, Guillemin and Zara associate to $(M, T)$ a labeled graph $\mG_M$ where the labels lie in $H^2(BT)$. They also define the subring $H_T^*(\mG_M)$ of $\bigoplus_{v\in V(\mG_M)}H^*(BT)$, where $V(\mG_M)$ is the set of vertices of $\mG_M$ and we call $H_T^*(\mG_M)$ the "graph cohomology" ring of $\mG_M$. It is known that the equivariant cohomology ring of $M$ can be described by using combinatorial data of the labeled graph. The main result of this paper is to determine the ring structure of equivariant coho…
We characterize the toric face rings that are normal (respectively seminormal). Extending results about local cohomology of Brun, Bruns, Ichim, Li and Römer of seminormal monoid rings and Stanley toric face rings, we prove the vanishing of certain graded parts of local cohomology of seminormal toric face rings. The combinatorial formula we obtain generalizes Hochster's formula. We also characterize all (necessarily seminormal) toric face rings that are $F$-pure or $F$-split over a field of characteristic $p>0$. An example is given to show that $F$-injectivity does not behave well with respect …
The celebrated BKK Theorem expresses the number of roots of a system of generic Laurent polynomials in terms of the mixed volume of the corresponding system of Newton polytopes.Pukhlikov and the second author noticed that the cohomology ring of smooth projective toric varieties over $\mathbb{C}$ can be computed via the BKK Theorem. This complemented the known descriptions of the cohomology ring of toric varieties, like the one in terms of Stanley-Reisner algebras. Sankaran and Uma generalized the "Stanley-Reisner description" to the case of toric bundles, i.e. equivariant compactifications of …
We use a theorem of Tolman and Weitsman to find explicit formulæfor the rational cohomology rings of the symplectic reduction of flag varieties in C^n, or generic coadjoint orbits of SU(n), by (maximal) torus actions. We also calculate the cohomology ring of the moduli space of $n$ points in CP^k, which is isomorphic to the Grassmannian of k-planes in C^n, by realizing it as a degenerate coadjoint orbit.
Matroid bundles, introduced by MacPherson, are combinatorial analogues of real vector bundles. This paper sets up the foundations of matroid bundles, and defines a natural transformation from isomorphism classes of real vector bundles to isomorphism classes of matroid bundles, as well as a transformation from matroid bundles to spherical quasifibrations. The poset of oriented matroids of a fixed rank classifies matroid bundles, and the above transformations give a splitting from topology to combinatorics back to topology. This shows the mod 2 cohomology of the poset of rank k oriented matroids…
Some projective wonderful models for the complement of a toric arrangement in a n-dimensional algebraic torus T were constructed in [3]. In this paper we describe their integer cohomology rings by generators and relations.
