We consider continuous time risk processes in which the claim sizes are dependent and non-identically distributed phase-type distributions. The class of distributions we propose is easy to characterize and allows to incorporate the dependence between claims in a simple and intuitive way. It is also designed to facilitate the study of the risk processes by using a Markov-modulated fluid embedding technique. Using this technique, we obtain simple recursive procedures to determine the joint distribution of the time of ruin, the deficit at ruin and the number of claims before the ruin. We also obtain some bounds for the ultimate ruin probability. Finally, we provide a few examples of multivariate phase-type distributions and use them for numerical illustration.
In this paper we propose new iterative algorithm of calculating the joint distribution of the Parisian ruin time and the number of claims until Parisian ruin for the classical risk model. Examples are provided when the generic claim size is exponentially distributed.
We analyse the asymptotics of ruin probabilities of two insurance companies (or two branches of the same company) that divide between them both claims and premia in some specified proportions when the initial reserves of both companies tend to infinity and generic claim size is subexponential.
In this paper, we consider a classical risk model refracted at given level. We give an explicit expression for the joint density of the ruin time and the cumulative number of claims counted up to ruin time. The proof is based on solving some integro-differential equations and employing the Lagrange's Expansion Theorem.
We derive a closed-form (infinite series) representation for the distribution of the ruin time for the Sparre Andersen model with exponentially distributed claims. This extends a recent result of Dickson et al. (2005) for such processes with Erlang inter-claim times. We illustrate our result in the cases of gamma and mixed exponential inter-claim time distributions.
We investigate the probability that an insurance portfolio gets ruined within a finite time period under the assumption that the r largest claims are (partly) reinsured. We show that for regularly varying claim sizes the probability of ruin after reinsurance is also regularly varying in terms of the initial capital, and derive an explicit asymptotic expression for the latter. We establish this result by leveraging recent developments on sample-path large deviations for heavy tails. Our results allow, on the asymptotic level, for an explicit comparison between two well-known large-claim reinsur…
We analyse the ruin probabilities for a renewal insurance risk process with inter-arrival time distributions depending on the claims that arrived within a fixed (past) time window. This dependence could be explained through a regenerative structure. The main inspiration of the model comes from the Bonus-Malus feature. We discuss first asymptotic results of ruin probabilities for different regimes of claim distributions. For numerical results, we recognise an embedded Markov additive process. Via an appropriate change of measure, ruin probabilities could be computed to a closed form formulae. A…
The discrete time risk model with two seasons and dependent claims is considered. An algorithm is created for computing the values of the ultimate ruin probability. Theoretical results are illustrated with numerical examples.
Parisian ruin probability in the classical Brownian risk model, unlike the standard ruin probability can not be explicitly calculated even in one-dimensional setup. Resorting on asymptotic theory, we derive in this contribution an asymptotic approximations of both Parisian and cumulative Parisian ruin probability and simultaneous ruin time for the two-dimensional Brownian risk model when the initial capital increases to infinity.
In this paper we derive the exact asymptotics of the probability of Parisian ruin for self-similar Gaussian risk processes. Additionally, we obtain the normal approximation of the Parisian ruin time and derive an asymptotic relation between the Parisian and the classical ruin times.
Lundberg-type inequalities for ruin probabilities of non-homogeneous risk models are presented in this paper. By employing martingale method, the upper bounds of ruin probabilities are obtained for the general risk models under weak assumptions. In addition, several risk models, including the newly defined united risk model and quasi-periodic risk model with interest rate, are studied.
In this short note, we derive explicit formulas for the joint densities of the time to ruin and the number of claims until ruin in perturbed classical risk models, by constructing several auxiliary random processes.
In this paper we give few expressions and asymptotics of ruin probabilities for a Markov modulated risk process for various regimes of a time horizon, initial reserves and a claim size distribution. We also consider few versions of the ruin time.
This paper obtains an asymptotic formula for the finite-time ruin probability of the compound nonhomogeneous Poisson risk model with a constant interest force, in which the claims are conditionally independent random variables with a common subexponential distribution. The paper also obtains some asymptotic relations of randomly weighted sums $\sum_{i=1}^n θ_iX_i$, in which the weights $θ_i$ $i=1,2,\cdots, n$ are positive random variables which are bounded above and the primary random variables $X_i$, $i=1,2,\cdots,n$ are conditionally independent and follow subexponential distributions.
In this paper we investigate the Parisian ruin probability for an integrated Gaussian process. Under certain assumptions, we find the Parisian ruin probability and the classical ruin probability are on the log-scale asymptotically the same. Moreover, for any small interval required by the risk process staying below level zero, the Parisian ruin probability and the classical one are the same also in the premise asymptotic behavior. Furthermore, we derive an approximation of the conditional ruin time.
We analyze the classical Brownian risk models discussing the approximation of ruin probabilities (classical, γ-reflected, Parisian and cumulative Parisian) for the case that ruin can occur only on specific discrete grids. A practical and natural grid of points is for instance G(1) = {0,1,2,...}, which allows us to study the probability of the ruin on the first day, second day, and so one. For such a discrete setting, there are no explicit formulas for the ruin probabilities mentioned above. In this contribution we derive accurate approximations of ruin probabilities for uniform grids by lettin…
In this paper we consider the Parisian ruin probabilities for the dual risk model in a discrete-time setting. By exploiting the strong Markov property of the risk process we derive a recursive expression for the fnite-time Parisian ruin probability, in terms of classic discrete-time dual ruin probabilities. Moreover, we obtain an explicit expression for the corresponding infnite-time Parisian ruin probability as a limiting case. In order to obtain more analytic results, we employ a conditioning argument and derive a new expression for the classic infinite-time ruin probability in the dual risk…
We study the asymptotic behavior of ruin probabilities, as the initial reserve goes to infinity, for a reserve process model where claims arrive according to a renewal process, while between the claim times the process has the dynamics of geometric Brownian motion-type Itô processes with time-dependent random coefficients. These coefficients are ``reset" after each claim time, switching to new values independent of the past history of the process. We use the implicit renewal theory to obtain power-function bounds for the eventual ruin probability. In the special case when the random drift and …
In this paper we consider some generalizations of the classical d-dimensional Brownian risk model. This contribution derives some non-asymptotic bounds for simultaneous ruin probabilities of interest. In addition, we obtain non-asymptotic bounds also for the case of general trend functions and convolutions of our original risk model.
The ruin probability in the classical Brownian risk model can be explicitly calculated for both finite and infinite-time horizon. This is not the case for the simultaneous ruin probability in two-dimensional Brownian risk model. Resorting on asymptotic theory, we derive in this contribution approximations of both simultaneous ruin probability and simultaneous ruin time for the two-dimensional Brownian risk model when the initial capital increases to infinity. Given the interest in proportional reinsurance, we consider in some details the case where the correlation is 1. This model is tractable…
This paper studies risk balancing features in an insurance market by evaluating ruin probabilities for single and multiple components of a multivariate compound Poisson risk process. The dependence of the components of the process is induced by a random bipartite network. In analogy with the non-network scenario, a network ruin parameter is introduced. This random parameter, which depends on the bipartite network, is crucial for the ruin probabilities. Under certain conditions on the network and for light-tailed claim size distributions we obtain Lundberg bounds and, for exponential claim size…
We derive formulas for the moments of the ruin time in a Lévy risk model and use these to determine the asymptotic behavior of the moments of the ruin time as the initial capital tends to infinity. In the special case of the perturbed Cramér-Lundberg model with phase-type or exponentially distributed claims, we explicitly compute the first two moments of the ruin time. All our considerations distinguish between the profitable and the unprofitable setting.
We consider the classical Cramér-Lundberg risk model with claim sizes that are mixtures of phase-type and subexponential variables. Exploiting a specific geometric compound representation, we propose control variate techniques to efficiently simulate the ruin probability in this situation. The resulting estimators perform well for both small and large initial capital. We quantify the variance reduction as well as the efficiency gain of our method over another fast standard technique based on the classical Pollaczek-Khinchine formula. We provide a numerical example to illustrate the performance…
In this note we consider the two-dimensional risk model introduced in Avram et al. \cite{APP08} with constant interest rate. We derive the integral-differential equations of the Laplace transforms, and asymptotic expressions for the finite time ruin probabilities with respect to the joint ruin times $T_{\rm max}(u_1,u_2)$ and $T_{\rm min}(u_1,u_2)$ respectively.
We consider a generalization of the classical risk model when the premium intensity depends on the current surplus of an insurance company. All surplus is invested in the risky asset, the price of which follows a geometric Brownian motion. We get an exponential bound for the infinite-horizon ruin probability. To this end, we allow the surplus process to explode and investigate the question concerning the probability of explosion of the surplus process between claim arrivals.
In the setting of a Lévy insurance risk process, we present some results regarding the Parisian ruin problem which concerns the occurrence of an excursion below zero of duration bigger than a given threshold $r$. First, we give the joint Laplace transform of ruin-time and ruin-position (possibly killed at the first-passage time above a fixed level $b$), which generalises known results concerning Parisian ruin. This identity can be used to compute the expected discounted penalty function via Laplace inversion. Second, we obtain the $q$-potential measure of the process killed at Parisian ruin. T…
Let $(W_1(s), W_2(t)), s,t\ge 0$ be a bivariate Brownian motion with standard Brownian motion marginals and constant correlation $ρ\in (-1,1).$ Parisian ruin is defined as a classical ruin that happens over an extended period of time, the so-called time-in-red. We derive exact asymptotics for the non-simultaneous Parisian ruin of the company conditioned on the event of non-simultaneous ruin happening. We are interested in finding asymptotics of such problem as $u \to \infty$ and with the length of time-in-red being of order $\frac{1}{u^2},$ where $u$ represents initial capital for the companie…
We explicitly find the rate of exponential long-term convergence for the ruin probability in a level-dependent Lévy-driven risk model, as time goes to infinity. Siegmund duality allows to reduce the pro blem to long-term convergence of a reflected jump-diffusion to its stationary distribution, which is handled via Lyapunov functions.
We apply the theory of linear recurrence sequences to find an expression for the ultimate ruin probability in a discrete-time risk process. We assume the claims follow an arbitrary distribution with support $\{0,1,\ldots,m\}$, for some integer $m\ge2$. The method requires to find the zeroes of an $m$ degree polynomial and to solve a system of $m$ linear equations. An approximation is derived from the exact ruin formula and several numerical results and plots are provided as examples.
We study the probability of ruin before time $t$ for the family of tempered stable Lévy insurance risk processes, which includes the spectrally positive inverse Gaussian processes. Numerical approximations of the ruin time distribution are derived via the Laplace transform of the asymptotic ruin time distribution, for which we have an explicit expression. These are benchmarked against simulations based on importance sampling using stable processes. Theoretical consequences of the asymptotic formulae are found to indicate some potential drawbacks to the use of the inverse Gaussian process as a …
We investigate, focusing on the ruin probability, an adaptation of the Cramer-Lundberg model for the surplus process of an insurance company, in which, conditionally on their intensities, the two mixed Poisson processes governing the arrival times of the premiums and of the claims respectively, are independent. Such a model exhibits a stochastic dependence between the aggregate premium and claim amount processes. An explicit expression for the ruin probability is obtained when the claim and premium sizes are exponentially distributed.
In this paper we study the joint ruin problem for two insurance companies that divide between them both claims and premia in some specified proportions (modeling two branches of the same insurance company or an insurance and re-insurance company). Modeling the risk processes of the insurance companies by Cramér-Lundberg processes we obtain the Laplace transform in space of the probability that either of the insurance companies is ruined in finite time. Subsequently, for exponentially distributed claims, we derive an explicit analytical expression for this joint ruin probability by explicitly i…
Based on a discrete version of the Pollaczeck-Khinchine formula, a general method to calculate the ultimate ruin probability in the Gerber-Dickson risk model is provided when claims follow a negative binomial mixture distribution. The result is then extended for claims with a mixed Poisson distribution. The formula obtained allows for some approximation procedures. Several examples are provided along with the numerical evidence of the accuracy of the approximations.
In this paper, we consider the perturbed renewal risk process. Systems of integro-differential equations for the Gerber-Shiu functions at ruin caused by a claim and oscillation are established, respectively. The explicit Laplase transforms of Gerber-Shiu functions are obtained, while the closed form expressions for the Gerber-Shiu functions are derived when the claim amount distribution is from the rational family. Finally, we present numerical examples intended to illustrate the main results.
We investigate a new natural class $\mathcal{J}$ of probability distributions modeling large claim sizes, motivated by the `principle of one big jump'. Though significantly more general than the (sub-)class of subexponential distributions $\mathcal{S}$, many important and desirable structural properties can still be derived. We establish relations to many other important large claim distribution classes (such as $\mathcal{D}$, $\mathcal{S}$, $\mathcal{L}$, $\mathcal {K}$, $\mathcal{OS}$ and $\mathcal{OL}$), discuss the stability of $\mathcal{J}$ under tail-equivalence, convolution, convolution…
In this paper, we extend an existing scheme for numerically calculating the probability of ruin of a classical Cramér--Lundberg reserve process having absolutely continuous but otherwise general claim size distributions. We employ a dense class of distributions that we denominate Erlangized scale mixtures (ESM) and correspond to nonnegative and absolutely continuous distributions which can be written as a Mellin--Stieltjes convolution $Π\star G$ of a nonnegative distribution $Π$ with an Erlang distribution $G$. A distinctive feature of such a class is that it contains heavy-tailed distribution…
We study the discrete time risk process modelled by the skip-free random walk and we derive the results connected to the ruin probability, such as crossing the fixed level, for this kind of process. We use the method relying on the classical ballot theorems to derive these results and compare them to the results obtained for the continuous time version of the risk process. We further generalize this model by adding the perturbation and, still relying on the skip-free structure of that process, we generalize the previous results on crossing the fixed level for the generalized discrete time risk…
Let $B(t), t\in \mathbb{R}$ be a standard Brownian motion. In this paper, we derive the exact asymptotics of the probability of Parisian ruin on infinite time horizon for the following risk process \begin{align}\label{Rudef} R_u^δ(t)=e^{δt}\left(u+c\int^{t}_{0}e^{-δv}d v-σ\int_{0}^{t}e^{-δv}d B(v)\right),\quad t\geq0, \end{align} where $u\geq 0$ is the initial reserve, $δ\geq0$ is the force of interest, $c>0$ is the rate of premium and $σ>0$ is a volatility factor. Further, we show the asymptotics of the Parisian ruin time of this risk process.
This paper deals with the discrete-time risk model with nonidentically distributed claims. We suppose that the claims repeat with time periods of three units, that is, claim distributions coincide at times $\{1,4,7,\ldots\}$, at times $\{2,5,8,\ldots\}$, and at times $\{3,6,9,\ldots\}$. We present the recursive formulas to calculate the finite-time and ultimate ruin probabilities. We illustrate the theoretical results by several numerical examples.
In this paper we consider a compound Poisson risk model with regularly varying claim sizes. For this model in [1] an asymptotic formula for the finite time ruin probability is provided when the time is scaled by the mean excess function. In this paper we derive the rate of convergence for this finite time ruin probability when the claims have a finite second moment. [1] S. Asmussen and C. Klüppelberg. Large deviations results for subexponential tails, with applications to insurance risk. Stochastic Process. Appl., 64(1):103-125, 1996.
In this paper, we build on the techniques developed in Albrecher et al. (2013), to generate initial-boundary value problems for ruin probabilities of surplus-dependent premium risk processes, under a renewal case scenario, Erlang (2) claim arrivals, and an exponential claims scenario, Erlang (2) claim sizes. Applying the approximation theory of solutions of linear ordinary differential equations developed in Fedoryuk (1993), we derive the asymptotics of the ruin probabilities when the initial reserve tends to infinity. When considering premiums that are {\it linearly} dependent on reserves, re…
We study a general perturbed risk process with cumulative claims modelled by a subordinator with finite expectation, with the perturbation being a spectrally negative Levy process with zero expectation. We derive a Pollaczek-Hinchin type formula for the survival probability of that risk process, and give an interpretation of the formula based on the decomposition of the dual risk process at modified ladder epochs.
We study the rough asymptotic behaviour of a general economic risk model in a discrete setting. Both financial and insurance risks are taken into account. Loss during the first $n$ years is modelled as a random variable $B_1+A_1B_2+\ldots+A_1\ldots A_{n-1}B_n$, where $A_i$ corresponds to the financial risk of the year $i$ and $B_i$ represents the insurance risk respectively. Risks of the same year $i$ are not assumed to be independent. The main result shows that ruin probabilities exhibit power law decay under general assumptions. Our objective is to give a complete characterisation of the rel…
We investigate the Levy insurance risk model with tax under Cramér's condition. A direct analogue of Cramér's estimate for the probability of ruin in this model is obtained, together with the asymptotic distribution, conditional on ruin occurring, of several variables of interest related to ruin including the surplus immediately prior to ruin (undershoot) and shortfall at ruin (overshoot). We also compute the present value of all tax paid conditional on ruin occurring. The proof involves first transferring results from the model with no tax to the reflected process, and from there to the model…
In this paper we study the asymptotic decay of finite time ruin probabilities for an insurance company that faces heavy-tailed claims, uses predictable investment strategies and makes investments in risky assets whose prices evolve according to quite general semimartingales. We show that the ruin problem corresponds to determining hitting probabilities for the solution to a randomly perturbed stochastic integral equation. We derive a large deviation result for the hitting probabilities that holds uniformly over a family of semimartingales and show that this result gives the asymptotic decay of…
Consider a surplus process which both of collected premium and payed claim size are two independent compound Poisson processes. This article derives two approximated formulas for the ruin probability of such surplus process, say double stochastic compound poisson process. More precisely, it provides two mixture exponential approximations for ruin probability of such double stochastic compound poisson process. Applications to long_term Bonus_Malus systems and a heavy-tiled claim size distribution have been given. Improvement of our findings compared to the Cramer- Lundberg upper bound has been …
We consider a dual risk model with constant expense rate and i.i.d. exponentially distributed gains $C_i$ ($i=1,2,\dots$) that arrive according to a renewal process with general interarrival times. We add to this classical dual risk model the proportional gain feature, that is, if the surplus process just before the $i$th arrival is at level $u$, then for $a>0$ the capital jumps up to the level $(1+a)u+C_i$. The ruin probability and the distribution of the time to ruin are determined. We furthermore identify the value of discounted cumulative dividend payments, for the case of a Poisson arriva…
We study the asymptotic of the ruin probability for a process which is the solution of linear SDE defined by a pair of independent Lévy processes. Our main interest is the model describing the evolution of the capital reserve of an insurance company selling annuities and investing in a risky asset. Let $β>0$ be the root of the cumulant-generating function $H$ of the increment of the log price process $V$. We show that the ruin probability admits the exact asymptotic $Cu^{-β}$ as the initial capital $u\to\infty$ assuming only that the law of $V_T$ is non-arithmetic without any further assumptio…
Let $B(t), t\in \mathbb{R}$ be a standard Brownian motion. Define a risk process \label{Rudef} R_u^δ(t)=e^{δt}\left(u+c\int^{t}_{0}e^{-δs}d s-σ\int_{0}^{t}e^{-δs}d B(s)\right), t\geq0, where $u\geq 0$ is the initial reserve, $δ\geq0$ is the force of interest, $c>0$ is the rate of premium and $σ>0$ is a volatility factor. In this contribution we obtain an approximation of the Parisian ruin probability \mathcal{K}_S^δ(u,T_u):=\mathbb{P}\left\{\inf_{t\in[0,S]} \sup_{s\in[t,t+T_u]} R_u^δ(s)<0\right\}, S\ge 0, as $u\rightarrow\infty$ where $T_u$ is a bounded function. Further, we show that the Pari…
This paper develops asymptotics and approximations for ruin probabilities in a multivariate risk setting. We consider a model in which the individual reserve processes are driven by a common Markovian environmental process. We subsequently consider a regime in which the claim arrival intensity and transition rates of the environmental process are jointly sped up, and one in which there is (with overwhelming probability) maximally one transition of the environmental process in the time interval considered. The approximations are extensively tested in a series of numerical experiments.
We deal with a generalization of the classical risk model when an insurance company gets additional funds whenever a claim arrives and consider some practical approaches to the estimation of the ruin probability. In particular, we get an upper exponential bound and construct an analogue to the De Vylder approximation for the ruin probability. We compare results of these approaches with statistical estimates obtained by the Monte Carlo method for selected distributions of claim sizes and additional funds.
