We study a general perturbed risk process with cumulative claims modelled by a subordinator with finite expectation, with the perturbation being a spectrally negative Levy process with zero expectation. We derive a
Pollaczek-Hinchin type formula for the survival probability of that risk process, and give an interpretation of the formula based on the decomposition of the dual risk process at modified ladder epochs.
In this short note, we derive explicit formulas for the joint densities of the time to ruin and the number of claims until ruin in perturbed classical risk models, by constructing several auxiliary random processes.
In this paper, we consider the perturbed renewal risk process. Systems of integro-differential equations for the Gerber-Shiu functions at ruin caused by a claim and oscillation are established, respectively. The explicit Laplase transforms of Gerber-Shiu functions are obtained, while the closed form expressions for the Gerber-Shiu functions are derived when the claim amount distribution is from the rational family. Finally, we present numerical examples intended to illustrate the main results.
In this paper we give few expressions and asymptotics of ruin probabilities for a Markov modulated risk process for various regimes of a time horizon, initial reserves and a claim size distribution. We also consider few versions of the ruin time.
We investigate the asymptotic of ruin probabilities when the company combines the life- and non-life insurance businesses and invests its reserve into a risky asset with stochastic volatility and drift driven by a two-state Markov process. Using the technique of the implicit renewal theory we obtain the rate of convergence to zero of the ruin probabilities.
Lundberg-type inequalities for ruin probabilities of non-homogeneous risk models are presented in this paper. By employing martingale method, the upper bounds of ruin probabilities are obtained for the general risk models under weak assumptions. In addition, several risk models, including the newly defined united risk model and quasi-periodic risk model with interest rate, are studied.
This article studies asymptotic approximations of ruin probabilities of multivariate random walks with heavy-tailed increments. Under our assumptions, the distributions of the increments are closely connected to multivariate subexponentiality and admit dependence between components. Keywords: subexponential distribution, ruin probability, multivariate random walk
This paper studies risk balancing features in an insurance market by evaluating ruin probabilities for single and multiple components of a multivariate compound Poisson risk process. The dependence of the components of the process is induced by a random bipartite network. In analogy with the non-network scenario, a network ruin parameter is introduced. This random parameter, which depends on the bipartite network, is crucial for the ruin probabilities. Under certain conditions on the network and for light-tailed claim size distributions we obtain Lundberg bounds and, for exponential claim size…
In this note we consider the two-dimensional risk model introduced in Avram et al. \cite{APP08} with constant interest rate. We derive the integral-differential equations of the Laplace transforms, and asymptotic expressions for the finite time ruin probabilities with respect to the joint ruin times $T_{\rm max}(u_1,u_2)$ and $T_{\rm min}(u_1,u_2)$ respectively.
The classical Cramér-Lundberg risk process models the ruin probability of an insurance company experiencing an incoming cash flow - the premium income, and an outgoing cash flow - the claims. From a system's viewpoint, the web of insurance agents and risk objects can be represented by a bipartite network. In such a bipartite network setting, it has been shown that joint ruin of a group of agents may be avoided even if individual agents would experience ruin in the classical Cramér-Lundberg model. This paper describes and examines a phase transition phenomenon for these ruin probabilities.
We study the asymptotics of the ruin probability in the Cramér-Lundberg model with a modified notion of ruin. The modification is as follows. If the portfolio becomes negative, the asset is not immediately declared ruined but may survive due to certain mechanisms. Under a rather general assumption on the mechanism - satisfied by most such modified models from the literature - we study the relation of the asymptotics of the modified ruin probability to the classical ruin probability. This is done under the Cramér condition as well as for subexponential integrated claim sizes.
We investigate the asymptotic of ruin probabilities when the company invests its reserve in a risky asset with a switching regime price. We assume that the asset price is a conditional geometric Brownian motion with parameters modulated by a Markov process with a finite number of states. Using the technique of the implicit renewal theory we obtain the rate of convergence to zero of the ruin probabilities as the initial capital tends to infinity.
We analyse the ruin probabilities for a renewal insurance risk process with inter-arrival time distributions depending on the claims that arrived within a fixed (past) time window. This dependence could be explained through a regenerative structure. The main inspiration of the model comes from the Bonus-Malus feature. We discuss first asymptotic results of ruin probabilities for different regimes of claim distributions. For numerical results, we recognise an embedded Markov additive process. Via an appropriate change of measure, ruin probabilities could be computed to a closed form formulae. A…
In this paper, we unify two popular approaches for the definition of actuarial ruin with implementation delays, also known as Parisian ruin. Our new definition of ruin includes both deterministic delays and exponentially distributed delays: ruin is declared the first time an excursion in the red zone lasts longer than an implementation delay with a deterministic and a stochastic component. For this Parisian ruin with mixed delays, we identify the joint distribution of the time of ruin and the deficit at ruin, therefore providing generalizations of many results previously obtained, such as in \…
We analyze the classical Brownian risk models discussing the approximation of ruin probabilities (classical, γ-reflected, Parisian and cumulative Parisian) for the case that ruin can occur only on specific discrete grids. A practical and natural grid of points is for instance G(1) = {0,1,2,...}, which allows us to study the probability of the ruin on the first day, second day, and so one. For such a discrete setting, there are no explicit formulas for the ruin probabilities mentioned above. In this contribution we derive accurate approximations of ruin probabilities for uniform grids by lettin…
We explicitly find the rate of exponential long-term convergence for the ruin probability in a level-dependent Lévy-driven risk model, as time goes to infinity. Siegmund duality allows to reduce the pro blem to long-term convergence of a reflected jump-diffusion to its stationary distribution, which is handled via Lyapunov functions.
We apply the theory of linear recurrence sequences to find an expression for the ultimate ruin probability in a discrete-time risk process. We assume the claims follow an arbitrary distribution with support $\{0,1,\ldots,m\}$, for some integer $m\ge2$. The method requires to find the zeroes of an $m$ degree polynomial and to solve a system of $m$ linear equations. An approximation is derived from the exact ruin formula and several numerical results and plots are provided as examples.
We study a Sparre Andersen model in which the business activity of the company is described by a compound renewal process with drift assuming that the capital reserves are invested in a risky asset. The price of the latter is assumed to evolve according to a geometric Lévy process. We prove that the asymptotic behavior of the ruin probability depends to a large extent only on the properties of the price process.
We study the probability of ruin before time $t$ for the family of tempered stable Lévy insurance risk processes, which includes the spectrally positive inverse Gaussian processes. Numerical approximations of the ruin time distribution are derived via the Laplace transform of the asymptotic ruin time distribution, for which we have an explicit expression. These are benchmarked against simulations based on importance sampling using stable processes. Theoretical consequences of the asymptotic formulae are found to indicate some potential drawbacks to the use of the inverse Gaussian process as a …
We study the asymptotic behavior of ruin probabilities, as the initial reserve goes to infinity, for a reserve process model where claims arrive according to a renewal process, while between the claim times the process has the dynamics of geometric Brownian motion-type Itô processes with time-dependent random coefficients. These coefficients are ``reset" after each claim time, switching to new values independent of the past history of the process. We use the implicit renewal theory to obtain power-function bounds for the eventual ruin probability. In the special case when the random drift and …
This paper develops asymptotics and approximations for ruin probabilities in a multivariate risk setting. We consider a model in which the individual reserve processes are driven by a common Markovian environmental process. We subsequently consider a regime in which the claim arrival intensity and transition rates of the environmental process are jointly sped up, and one in which there is (with overwhelming probability) maximally one transition of the environmental process in the time interval considered. The approximations are extensively tested in a series of numerical experiments.
We consider a risk model with a counting process whose intensity is a Markovian shot-noise process, to resolve one of the disadvantages of the Cramér-Lundberg model, namely the constant jump intensity of the Poisson process. Due to this structure, we can apply the theory of PDMPs on a multivariate process containing the intensity and the reserve process, which allows us to identify a family of martingales. Eventually, we use change of measure techniques to derive an upper bound for the ruin probability in this model. Exploiting a recurrent structure of the shot-noise process, even the asymptot…

The study deals with the ruin problem when an insurance company having two business branches, life insurance and non-life insurance, invests its reserve into a risky asset with the price dynamics given by a geometric Brownian motion. We prove a result on smoothness of the ruin probability as a function of the initial capital and obtain for it an integro-differential equation understood in the classical sense. For the case of exponentially distributed jumps we show that the survival probability is a solution of an ordinary differential equation of the 4th order. Asymptotic analysis of the latte…
We investigate the probability that an insurance portfolio gets ruined within a finite time period under the assumption that the r largest claims are (partly) reinsured. We show that for regularly varying claim sizes the probability of ruin after reinsurance is also regularly varying in terms of the initial capital, and derive an explicit asymptotic expression for the latter. We establish this result by leveraging recent developments on sample-path large deviations for heavy tails. Our results allow, on the asymptotic level, for an explicit comparison between two well-known large-claim reinsur…
In this paper we evaluate the probability of the discrete time Parisian ruin that occurs when surplus process stays below or at zero at least for some fixed duration of time $d>0$. We identify expressions for the ruin probabilities within finite and infinite-time horizon. We also find their light and heavy-tailed asymptotics when initial reserves approach infinity. Finally, we calculate these probabilities for a few explicit examples.
We study the rough asymptotic behaviour of a general economic risk model in a discrete setting. Both financial and insurance risks are taken into account. Loss during the first $n$ years is modelled as a random variable $B_1+A_1B_2+\ldots+A_1\ldots A_{n-1}B_n$, where $A_i$ corresponds to the financial risk of the year $i$ and $B_i$ represents the insurance risk respectively. Risks of the same year $i$ are not assumed to be independent. The main result shows that ruin probabilities exhibit power law decay under general assumptions. Our objective is to give a complete characterisation of the rel…
In this paper, we build on the techniques developed in Albrecher et al. (2013), to generate initial-boundary value problems for ruin probabilities of surplus-dependent premium risk processes, under a renewal case scenario, Erlang (2) claim arrivals, and an exponential claims scenario, Erlang (2) claim sizes. Applying the approximation theory of solutions of linear ordinary differential equations developed in Fedoryuk (1993), we derive the asymptotics of the ruin probabilities when the initial reserve tends to infinity. When considering premiums that are {\it linearly} dependent on reserves, re…
We consider the classical Cramér-Lundberg risk model with claim sizes that are mixtures of phase-type and subexponential variables. Exploiting a specific geometric compound representation, we propose control variate techniques to efficiently simulate the ruin probability in this situation. The resulting estimators perform well for both small and large initial capital. We quantify the variance reduction as well as the efficiency gain of our method over another fast standard technique based on the classical Pollaczek-Khinchine formula. We provide a numerical example to illustrate the performance…
In this paper we study the asymptotic decay of finite time ruin probabilities for an insurance company that faces heavy-tailed claims, uses predictable investment strategies and makes investments in risky assets whose prices evolve according to quite general semimartingales. We show that the ruin problem corresponds to determining hitting probabilities for the solution to a randomly perturbed stochastic integral equation. We derive a large deviation result for the hitting probabilities that holds uniformly over a family of semimartingales and show that this result gives the asymptotic decay of…
We formulate the insurance risk process in a general Levy process setting, and give general theorems for the ruin probability and the asymptotic distribution of the overshoot of the process above a high level, when the process drifts to -\infty a.s. and the positive tail of the Levy measure, or of the ladder height measure, is subexponential or, more generally, convolution equivalent. Results of Asmussen and Kluppelberg [Stochastic Process. Appl. 64 (1996) 103-125] and Bertoin and Doney [Adv. in Appl. Probab. 28 (1996) 207-226] for ruin probabilities and the overshoot in random walk and compou…
In this paper we consider the Parisian ruin probabilities for the dual risk model in a discrete-time setting. By exploiting the strong Markov property of the risk process we derive a recursive expression for the fnite-time Parisian ruin probability, in terms of classic discrete-time dual ruin probabilities. Moreover, we obtain an explicit expression for the corresponding infnite-time Parisian ruin probability as a limiting case. In order to obtain more analytic results, we employ a conditioning argument and derive a new expression for the classic infinite-time ruin probability in the dual risk…
We obtain absorption probabilities and expected time until absorption for different stopping strategies in gambler's ruin problem using the concept of multiple function barriers
In this paper, we extend an existing scheme for numerically calculating the probability of ruin of a classical Cramér--Lundberg reserve process having absolutely continuous but otherwise general claim size distributions. We employ a dense class of distributions that we denominate Erlangized scale mixtures (ESM) and correspond to nonnegative and absolutely continuous distributions which can be written as a Mellin--Stieltjes convolution $Π\star G$ of a nonnegative distribution $Π$ with an Erlang distribution $G$. A distinctive feature of such a class is that it contains heavy-tailed distribution…
We give explicit formulas for ruin probabilities in a multidimensional Generalized Gambler's ruin problem. The generalization is best interpreted as a game of one player against $d$ other players, allowing arbitrary winning and losing probabilities (including ties) depending on the current fortune with particular player. It includes many previous other generalizations as special cases. Instead of usually utilized first-step-like analysis we involve dualities between Markov chains. We give general procedure for solving ruin-like problems utilizing Siegmund duality in Markov chains for partially…
In this paper we consider a classical risk process perturbed by a Brownian motion. We analyze the value function describing the mean of the cumulative discounted dividend payments paid up to Parisian ruin time and further discounted by the number of claims appeared up to this ruin time. We identify this value function for the barrier strategy and find the sufficient conditions for this strategy to be optimal. We also consider few particular examples.
We derive formulas for the moments of the ruin time in a Lévy risk model and use these to determine the asymptotic behavior of the moments of the ruin time as the initial capital tends to infinity. In the special case of the perturbed Cramér-Lundberg model with phase-type or exponentially distributed claims, we explicitly compute the first two moments of the ruin time. All our considerations distinguish between the profitable and the unprofitable setting.
We study multidimensional Cramér-Lundberg risk processes where agents, located on a large sparse network, receive losses form their neighbors. To reduce the dimensionality of the problem, we introduce classification of agents according to an arbitrary countable set of types. The ruin of any agent triggers losses for all of its neighbours. We consider the case when the loss arrival process induced by the ensemble of ruined agents follows a Poisson process with general intensity function that scales with the network size. When the size of the network goes to infinity, we provide explicit ruin pr…
In this paper we consider some generalizations of the classical d-dimensional Brownian risk model. This contribution derives some non-asymptotic bounds for simultaneous ruin probabilities of interest. In addition, we obtain non-asymptotic bounds also for the case of general trend functions and convolutions of our original risk model.
In this note we find a formula for the supremum distribution of spectrally positive or negative Lévy processes with a broken linear drift. This gives formulas for ruin probabilities in the case when two insurance companies (or two branches of the same company) divide between them both claims and premia in some specified proportions. As an example we consider gamma Lévy process, $α$-stable Lévy process and Brownian motion. Moreover we obtain identities for Laplace transform of the distribution for the supremum of Lévy processes with randomly broken drift and on random intervals.
We analyse the asymptotics of ruin probabilities of two insurance companies (or two branches of the same company) that divide between them both claims and premia in some specified proportions when the initial reserves of both companies tend to infinity and generic claim size is subexponential.
In this paper we provide formulas for the expectation of a conditional game duration in a finite state-space one-dimensional gambler's ruin problem with arbitrary winning $p(n)$ and losing $q(n)$ probabilities (i.e., they depend on the current fortune). The formulas are stated in terms of the parameters of the system. Beyer and Waterman [Mathematics Magazine, 50(1), 1977] showed that for the classical gambler's ruin problem the distribution of a conditional absorption time is symmetric in $p$ and $q$. Our formulas imply that for non-constant winning/losing probabilities the expectation of a co…
Our work aims to study the tail behaviour of weighted sums of the form $\sum_{i=1}^{\infty} X_{i} \prod_{j=1}^{i}Y_{j}$, where $(X_{i}, Y_{i})$ are independent and identically distributed, with common joint distribution bivariate Sarmanov. Such quantities naturally arise in financial risk models. Each $X_{i}$ has a regularly varying tail. With sufficient conditions similar to those used by Denisov and Zwart (2007) imposed on these two sequences, and with certain suitably summable bounds similar to those proposed by Hazra and Maulik (2012), we explore the tail distribution of the random variabl…
Motivated by applications to insurance mathematics, we prove some heavy-traffic limit theorems for processes which encompass the fractionally differentiated random walk as well as some FARIMA processes, when the innovations are in the domain of attraction of a nonGaussian stable distribution.
Motivated by applications to insurance mathematics, we prove some heavy-traffic limit theorems for process which encompass the fractionally integrated random walk as well as some FARIMA processes, when the innovations are in the domain of attraction of a nonGaussian stable distribution.
We consider in this paper a risk reserve process where the claims and gains arrive according to two independent Poisson processes. While the gain sizes are phase-type distributed, we assume instead that the claim sizes are phase-type perturbed by a heavy-tailed component; that is, the claim size distribution is formally chosen to be phase-type with large probability $1-ε$ and heavy-tailed with small probability $ε$. We analyze the seminal Gerber-Shiu function coding the joint distribution of the time to ruin, the surplus immediately before ruin, and the deficit at ruin. We derive its value as …
The ruin probability in the classical Brownian risk model can be explicitly calculated for both finite and infinite-time horizon. This is not the case for the simultaneous ruin probability in two-dimensional Brownian risk model. Resorting on asymptotic theory, we derive in this contribution approximations of both simultaneous ruin probability and simultaneous ruin time for the two-dimensional Brownian risk model when the initial capital increases to infinity. Given the interest in proportional reinsurance, we consider in some details the case where the correlation is 1. This model is tractable…
Let {X_n,n\geq0} be a Markov chain on a general state space X with transition probability P and stationary probability π. Suppose an additive component S_n takes values in the real line R and is adjoined to the chain such that {(X_n,S_n),n\geq0} is a Markov random walk. In this paper, we prove a uniform Markov renewal theorem with an estimate on the rate of convergence. This result is applied to boundary crossing problems for {(X_n,S_n),n\geq0}. To be more precise, for given b\geq0, define the stopping time τ=τ(b)=inf{n:S_n>b}. When a drift μof the random walk S_n is 0, we derive a one-term Ed…
We investigate models of the life annuity insurance when the company invests its reserve into a risky asset with price following a geometric Brownian motion. Our main result is an exact asymptotic of the ruin probabilities for the case of exponentially distributed benefits. As in the case of non-life insurance with exponential claims, the ruin probabilities are either decreasing with a rate given by a power function (the case of small volatility) or equal to unit identically (the case of large volatility). The result allows us to quantify the share of reserve to invest into such a risky asset …
In this paper, we obtain the finite-horizon and infinite-horizon ruin probability asymptotics for risk processes with claims of subexponential tails for non-stationary arrival processes that satisfy a large deviation principle. As a result, the arrival process can be dependent, non-stationary and non-renewal. We give three examples of non-stationary and non-renewal point processes: Hawkes process, Cox process with shot noise intensity and self-correcting point process. We also show some aggregate claims results for these three examples.
Consider gambler's ruin with three players, 1, 2, and 3, having initial capitals $A$, $B$, and $C$ units. At each round a pair of players is chosen (uniformly at random) and a fair coin flip is made resulting in the transfer of one unit between these two players. Eventually, one of the players is eliminated and play continues with the remaining two. Let $σ\in S_3$ be the elimination order (e.g., $σ=132$ means player 1 is eliminated first and player 3 is eliminated second, leaving player 2 with $A+B+C$ units). We seek approximations (and exact formulas) for the elimination order probabilities $…
We study the ruin problem over a risk process described by a discrete-time Markov model. In contrast to previous studies that focused on the asymptotic behaviour of ruin probabilities for large values of the initial capital, we provide a new technique to compute the quantity of interest for any initial value, and with any given precision. Rather than focusing on a particular model for risk processes, we give a general characterization of the ruin probability by providing corresponding recursions and fixpoint equations. Since such equations for the ruin probability are ill-posed in the sense th…
Let $\left\{\sum_{i=1}^n λ_i X_i(t), t\in [0,T]\right\}$ be an aggregate Gaussian risk process with $X_i, i\leq n$ independent Gaussian processes satisfying Piterbarg conditions and $λ_i$'s given positive weights. In this paper we derive exact asymptotics of the finite-time ruin probability given by $$\mathbb{P}\left(\sup_{t\in[0,T]}\left(\sum_{i=1}^n λ_i X_i(t)- g(t) \right)>u\right)$$ as $u\to\infty$ for some general trend function $g$. Further, we derive asymptotic results for the finite-time ruin probabilities of risk processes perturbed by an aggregate Gaussian process.
