A set $S\subseteq 2^E$ of subsets of a finite set $E$ is \emph{powerful} if, for all $X\subseteq E$, the number of subsets of $X$ in $S$ is a power of 2. Each powerful set is associated with a non-negative integer valued function, which we call the rank function. Powerful sets were introduced by Farr and Wang as a generalisation of binary matroids, as the cocircuit space of a binary matroid gives a powerful set with the corresponding matroid rank function.
In this paper we investigate how structural properties of a powerful set can be characterised in terms of its rank function. Powerful sets have four types of degenerate elements, including loops and coloops. We show that certain evaluations of the rank function of a powerful set determine the degenerate elements. We introduce powerful multisets and prove some fundamental results on them. We show that a powerful set corresponds to a binary matroid if and only if its rank function is subcardinal. This paper answers the two conjectures made by Farr and Wang in the affirmative.
In this paper we investigate connections between linear sets and subspaces of linear maps. We give a geometric interpretation of the results of [18, Section 5] on linear sets on a projective line. We extend this to linear sets in arbitrary dimension, giving the connection between two constructions for linear sets defined in [9]. Finally, we then exploit this connection by using the MacWilliams identities to obtain information about the possible weight distribution of a linear set of rank n on a projective line $PG(1, q^n)$.

We study two possible tropical analogues of Weierstrass semigroups on graphs, called rank and functional Weierstrass sets. We prove that on simple graphs, the first is contained in the second. We completely characterize the subsets of N arising as a functional Weierstrass set of some graph. Finally, we give a sufficient condition for a subset of N to be the rank Weierstrass set of some graph, allowing us to construct examples of rank Weierstrass sets that are not semigroups.
We prove that if a subset of $(\mathbb{F}_q^n)^k$ (with $q$ an odd prime power) avoids a full-rank three-point pattern $\vec{x},\vec{x}+M_1\vec{d},\vec{x}+M_2\vec{d}$ then it is exponentially small, having size at most $3 \cdot c_q^{nk}$ where $0.8414 q \leq c_q \leq 0.9184 q$. This generalizes a theorem of Kovauc and complements results of Berger, Sah, Sawhney and Tidor. As a consequence, we prove that if $3$ is a square in $\mathbb{F}_q$ then subsets of $(\mathbb{F}_q^n)^2$ avoiding equilateral triangles are exponentially small.
度量图是有限图的一种几何实现,通过用实区间标识每条边。度量图$Γ$上的除数是$Γ$上自由阿尔贝群的元素。度量图上因子的秩(英语:rank of a divisor on a metric graph)是一个出现在度量图(或热带曲线)的黎曼-罗奇定理中的概念,由Gathmann和Kerber,以及Mikhalkin和Zharkov提出。
In this extended abstract we announce a proof that, in a Coxeter group of rank 3, low elements are in bijection with small inversion sets. This gives a partial confirmation of Conjecture 2 in [Dyer, Hohlweg '16]. That same article provides the main ingredient: the bipodality of the set of small roots is used to propagate information on the vertices of inversion polytopes.
Linear sets on the projective line have attracted a lot of attention because of their link with blocking sets, KM-arcs and rank-metric codes. In this paper, we study linear sets having two points of complementary weight, that is with two points for which the sum of their weights equals the rank of the linear set. As a special case, we study those linear sets having exactly two points of weight greater than one, by showing new examples and studying their equivalence issue. Also we determine some linearized polynomials defining the linear sets recently introduced by Jena and Van de Voorde (2021)…
The rank of a point-line geometry G is usually defined as the generating rank of G, namely the minimal cardinality of a generating set. However, when the subspace lattice of G satisfies the Exchange Property we can also try a different definition: consider all chains of subspaces of G and take the least upper bound of their lengths as the rank of G. If G is finitely generated then these two definitions yield the same number. On the other hand, as we shall show in this paper, if infinitely many points are needed to generate G then the rank as defined in the latter way is often (perhaps always) …
In this paper, we consider the problem of making skeptical inferences for the multi-label ranking problem. We assume that our uncertainty is described by a convex set of probabilities (i.e. a credal set), defined over the set of labels. Instead of learning a singleton prediction (or, a completed ranking over the labels), we thus seek for skeptical inferences in terms of set-valued predictions consisting of completed rankings.
This work investigates the structure of rank-metric codes in connection with concepts from finite geometry, most notably the $q$-analogues of projective systems and blocking sets. We also illustrate how to associate a classical Hamming-metric code to a rank-metric one, in such a way that various rank-metric properties naturally translate into the homonymous Hamming-metric notions under this correspondence. The most interesting applications of our results lie in the theory of minimal rank-metric codes, which we introduce and study from several angles. Our main contributions are bounds for the p…
Linear set in projective spaces over finite fields plays central roles in the study of blocking sets, semifields, rank-metric codes and etc. A linear set with the largest possible cardinality and the maximum rank is called maximum scattered. Despite two decades of study, there are only a few number of known maximum scattered linear sets in projective lines, including the family constructed by Csajbók, Marino, Polverino and Zanella 2018, and the family constructed by Csajbók, Marino, Zullo 2018 (also Marino, Montanucci, and Zullo 2020). This paper aims to solve the equivalence problem of the li…
The aim of this paper is to investigate the intersection problem between two linear sets in the projective line over a finite field. In particular, we analyze the intersection between two clubs with eventually different maximum fields of linearity. Also, we analyze the intersection between the linear set defined by the polynomial $αx^{q^k}+βx$ and other linear sets having the same rank; this family contains the linear set of pseudoregulus type defined by $x^q$. The strategy relies on the study of certain algebraic curves whose rational points describe the intersection of the two linear sets. A…
Employing two models, we show that various counting functions of a random variable defined by restriction or contraction of a ranked set with multiplicity (e.g., classical and arithmetic matroids) have expectations given by the corresponding multivariate Tutte polynomial. The first model is based on a generalization of a convolution formula of Kung (2010), extending from matroids to ranked sets with multiplicities. This model enables us to compute the expectations of many familiar polynomials, such as the chromatic, flow and Ehrhart polynomials, generalizing the classical results of Welsh (199…
Minimal rank-metric codes or, equivalently, linear cutting blocking sets are characterized in terms of the second generalized rank weight, via their connection with evasiveness properties of the associated $q$-system. Using this result, we provide the first construction of a family of $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$-linear MRD codes of length $2m$ that are not obtained as a direct sum of two smaller MRD codes. In addition, such a family has better parameters, since its codes possess generalized rank weights strictly larger than those of the previously known MRD codes. This shows that not all the MRD codes …
