We introduce and study two natural generalizations of the Connected VertexCover (VC) problem: the $p$-Edge-Connected and $p$-Vertex-Connected VC problem (where $p \geq 2$ is a fixed integer). Like Connected VC, both new VC problems are FPT, but do not admit a polynomial kernel unless $NP \subseteq coNP/poly$, which is highly unlikely. We prove however that both problems admit time efficient polynomial sized approximate kernelization schemes. We obtain an $O(2^{O(pk)}n^{O(1)})$-time algorithm for the $p$-Edge-Connected VC and an $O(2^{O(k^2)}n^{O(1)})$-time algorithm for the $p$-Vertex-Connected VC. Finally, we describe a $2(p+1)$-approximation algorithm for the $p$-Edge-Connected VC. The proofs for the new VC problems require more sophisticated arguments than for Connected VC. In particular, for the approximation algorithm we use Gomory-Hu trees and for the approximate kernels a result on small-size spanning $p$-vertex/edge-connected subgraph of a $p$-vertex/edge-connected graph obtained independently by Nishizeki and Poljak (1994) and Nagamochi and Ibaraki (1992).
A 3-path vertex cover in a graph is a vertex subset $C$ such that every path of three vertices contains at least one vertex from $C$. The parameterized 3-path vertex cover problem asks whether a graph has a 3-path vertex cover of size at most $k$. In this paper, we give a kernel of $5k$ vertices and an $O^*(1.7485^k)$-time and polynomial-space algorithm for this problem, both new results improve previous known bounds.
In the 3-path vertex cover problem, the input is an undirected graph $G$ and an integer $k$. The goal is to decide whether there is a set of vertices $S$ of size at most $k$ such that every path with 3 vertices in $G$ contains at least one vertex of $S$. In this paper we give parameterized algorithm for 3-path cover whose time complexity is $O^*(1.713^k)$. Our algorithm is faster than previous algorithms for this problem.
In the Cluster Vertex Deletion problem the input is a graph $G$ and an integer $k$. The goal is to decide whether there is a set of vertices $S$ of size at most $k$ such that the deletion of the vertices of $S$ from $G$ results a graph in which every connected component is a clique. We give an algorithm for Cluster Vertex Deletion whose running time is $O^*(1.811^k)$.
A directed graph $G$ is called a pumpkin if $G$ is a union of induced paths with a common start vertex $s$ and a common end vertex $t$, and the internal vertices of every two paths are disjoint. We give an algorithm that given a directed graph $G$ and an integer $k$, decides whether a pumpkin can be obtained from $G$ by deleting at most $k$ vertices. The algorithm runs in $O^*(2^k)$ time.
Feedback Vertex Set is a classic combinatorial optimization problem that asks for a minimum set of vertices in a given graph whose deletion makes the graph acyclic. From the point of view of parameterized algorithms and fixed-parameter tractability, Feedback Vertex Set is one of the landmark problems: a long line of study resulted in multiple algorithmic approaches and deep understanding of the combinatorics of the problem. Because of its central role in parameterized complexity, the first edition of the Parameterized Algorithms and Computational Experiments Challenge (PACE) in 2016 featured F…
In this paper we study a maximization version of the classical Feedback Vertex Set (FVS) problem, namely, the Max Min FVS problem, in the realm of parameterized complexity. In this problem, given an undirected graph $G$, a positive integer $k$, the question is to check whether $G$ has a minimal feedback vertex set of size at least $k$. We obtain following results for Max Min FVS. 1) We first design a fixed parameter tractable (FPT) algorithm for Max Min FVS running in time $10^kn^{\mathcal{O}(1)}$. 2) Next, we consider the problem parameterized by the vertex cover number of the input graph (de…
The $d$-bounded-degree vertex deletion problem, to delete at most $k$ vertices in a given graph to make the maximum degree of the remaining graph at most $d$, finds applications in computational biology, social network analysis and some others. It can be regarded as a special case of the $(d+2)$-hitting set problem and generates the famous vertex cover problem. The $d$-bounded-degree vertex deletion problem is NP-hard for each fixed $d\geq 0$. In terms of parameterized complexity, the problem parameterized by $k$ is W[2]-hard for unbounded $d$ and fixed-parameter tractable for each fixed $d\ge…
A cactus is a connected graph that does not contain $K_4 - e$ as a minor. Given a graph $G = (V, E)$ and integer $k \ge 0$, Cactus Vertex Deletion (also known as Diamond Hitting Set) is the problem of deciding whether $G$ has a vertex set of size at most $k$ whose removal leaves a forest of cacti. The current best deterministic parameterized algorithm for this problem was due to Bonnet et al. [WG 2016], which runs in time $26^kn^{O(1)}$, where $n$ is the number of vertices of $G$. In this paper, we design a deterministic algorithm for Cactus Vertex Deletion, which runs in time $17.64^kn^{O(1)}…
The Directed Feedback Vertex Set (DFVS) problem takes as input a directed graph~$G$ and seeks a smallest vertex set~$S$ that hits all cycles in $G$. This is one of Karp's 21 $\mathsf{NP}$-complete problems. Resolving the parameterized complexity status of DFVS was a long-standing open problem until Chen et al. [STOC 2008, J. ACM 2008] showed its fixed-parameter tractability via a $4^kk! n^{\mathcal{O}(1)}$-time algorithm, where $k = |S|$. Here we show fixed-parameter tractability of two generalizations of DFVS: - Find a smallest vertex set $S$ such that every strong component of $G - S$ has si…
In this paper, we study the conflict-free coloring of graphs induced by neighborhoods. A coloring of a graph is conflict-free if every vertex has a uniquely colored vertex in its neighborhood. The conflict-free coloring problem is to color the vertices of a graph using the minimum number of colors such that the coloring is conflict-free. We consider both closed neighborhoods, where the neighborhood of a vertex includes itself, and open neighborhoods, where a vertex does not included in its neighborhood. We study the parameterized complexity of conflict-free closed neighborhood coloring and con…
A vertex set $S$ of a graph $G$ is geodetic if every vertex of $G$ lies on a shortest path between two vertices in $S$. Given a graph $G$ and $k \in \mathbb N$, the NP-hard Geodetic Set problem asks whether there is a geodetic set of size at most $k$. Complementing various works on Geodetic Set restricted to special graph classes, we initiate a parameterized complexity study of Geodetic Set and show, on the negative side, that Geodetic Set is W[1]-hard when parameterized by feedback vertex number, path-width, and solution size, combined. On the positive side, we develop fixed-parameter algorit…
Vertex Cover Problem Parameterized Above and Below Tight Bounds
\textproc{Weighted Vertex Cover} is a variation of an extensively studied NP-complete problem, \textproc{Vertex Cover}, in which we are given a graph, $G = (V,E,w)$, where function $w:V \rightarrow \mathbb{Q}^{+}$ and a parameter $k$. The objective is to determine if there exists a vertex cover, $S$, such that $\sum_{v \in S}w(v) \leq k$. In our work, we first study the hardness of \textproc{Weighted Vertex Cover} and then examine this problem under parameterization by $l$ and $k$, where $l$ is the number of vertices with fractional weights. Then, we study the \textproc{Red-Blue Weighted Verte…

We study the problem of Imbalance parameterized by the twin cover of a graph. We show that Imbalance is XP parameterized by twin cover, and FPT when parameterized by the twin cover and the size of the largest clique outside the twin cover. In contrast, we introduce a notion of succinct representations of graphs in terms of their twin cover and demonstrate that Imbalance is NP-hard in the setting of succinct representations, even for graphs that have a twin cover of size one.
We show that there is no $2^{o(k^2)} n^{O(1)}$ time algorithm for Independent Set on $n$-vertex graphs with rank-width $k$, unless the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH) fails. Our lower bound matches the $2^{O(k^2)} n^{O(1)}$ time algorithm given by Bui-Xuan, Telle, and Vatshelle [Discret. Appl. Math., 2010] and it answers the open question of Bergougnoux and Kanté [SIAM J. Discret. Math., 2021]. We also show that the known $2^{O(k^2)} n^{O(1)}$ time algorithms for Weighted Dominating Set, Maximum Induced Matching and Feedback Vertex Set parameterized by rank-width $k$ are optimal assuming ETH…
Consider a graph $G = (V,E)$ and a coloring $c$ of vertices with colors from $[\ell]$. A vertex $v$ is said to be happy with respect to $c$ if $c(v) = c(u)$ for all neighbors $u$ of $v$. Further, an edge $(u,v)$ is happy if $c(u) = c(v)$. Given a partial coloring $c$ of $V$, the Maximum Happy Vertex (Edge) problem asks for a total coloring of $V$ extending $c$ to all vertices of $V$ that maximises the number of happy vertices (edges). Both problems are known to be NP-hard in general even when $\ell = 3$, and is polynomially solvable when $\ell = 2$. In [IWOCA 2016] it was shown that both probl…
In the Directed Feedback Vertex Set (DFVS) problem, the input is a directed graph $D$ on $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, and an integer $k$. The objective is to determine whether there exists a set of at most $k$ vertices intersecting every directed cycle of $D$. Whether or not DFVS admits a fixed parameter tractable (FPT) algorithm was considered the most important open problem in parameterized complexity until Chen, Liu, Lu, O'Sullivan and Razgon [JACM 2008] answered the question in the affirmative. They gave an algorithm for the problem with running time $O(k!4^kk^4nm)$. Since then, no faster a…
Vertex integrity is a graph parameter that measures the connectivity of a graph. Informally, its meaning is that a graph has small vertex integrity if it has a small separator whose removal disconnects the graph into connected components which are themselves also small. Graphs with low vertex integrity are extremely structured; this renders many hard problems tractable and has recently attracted interest in this notion from the parameterized complexity community. In this paper we revisit the NP-complete problem of computing the vertex integrity of a given graph from the point of view of struct…
We show that a graph with $n$ vertices and vertex cover of size $k$ has at most $4^k + n$ potential maximal cliques. We also show that for each positive integer $k$, there exists a graph with vertex cover of size $k$, $O(k^2)$ vertices, and $Ω(4^k)$ potential maximal cliques. Our results extend the results of Fomin, Liedloff, Montealegre, and Todinca [Algorithmica, 80(4):1146--1169, 2018], who proved an upper bound of $poly(n) 4^k$, but left the lower bound as an open problem.
For intractable problems on graphs of bounded treewidth, two graph parameters treedepth and vertex cover number have been used to obtain fine-grained complexity results. Although the studies in this direction are successful, we still need a systematic way for further investigations because the graphs of bounded vertex cover number form a rather small subclass of the graphs of bounded treedepth. To fill this gap, we use vertex integrity, which is placed between the two parameters mentioned above. For several graph problems, we generalize fixed-parameter tractability results parameterized by ver…
We complement the recent algorithmic result that Feedback Vertex Set is XP-time solvable parameterized by the mim-width of a given branch decomposition of the input graph [3] by showing that the problem is W[1]-hard in this parameterization. The hardness holds even for linear mim-width, as well as for H-graphs, where the parameter is the number of edges in H. To obtain this result, we adapt a reduction due to Fomin, Golovach and Raymond [2], following the same line of reasoning but adding a new gadget.
We study the parameterized complexity of various classic vertex-deletion problems such as Odd cycle transversal, Vertex planarization, and Chordal vertex deletion under hybrid parameterizations. Existing FPT algorithms for these problems either focus on the parameterization by solution size, detecting solutions of size $k$ in time $f(k) \cdot n^{O(1)}$, or width parameterizations, finding arbitrarily large optimal solutions in time $f(w) \cdot n^{O(1)}$ for some width measure $w$ like treewidth. We unify these lines of research by presenting FPT algorithms for parameterizations that can simult…
Streaming is a model where an input graph is provided one edge at a time, instead of being able to inspect it at will. In this work, we take a parameterized approach by assuming a vertex cover of the graph is given, building on work of Bishnu et al. [COCOON 2020]. We show the further potency of combining this parameter with the Adjacency List streaming model to obtain results for vertex deletion problems. This includes kernels, parameterized algorithms, and lower bounds for the problems of Pi-free Deletion, H-free Deletion, and the more specific forms of Cluster Vertex Deletion and Odd Cycle T…
For two integers $r, \ell \geq 0$, a graph $G = (V, E)$ is an $(r,\ell)$-graph if $V$ can be partitioned into $r$ independent sets and $\ell$ cliques. In the parameterized $(r,\ell)$-Vertex Deletion problem, given a graph $G$ and an integer $k$, one has to decide whether at most $k$ vertices can be removed from $G$ to obtain an $(r,\ell)$-graph. This problem is NP-hard if $r+\ell \geq 1$ and encompasses several relevant problems such as Vertex Cover and Odd Cycle Transversal. The parameterized complexity of $(r,\ell)$-Vertex Deletion was known for all values of $(r,\ell)$ except for $(2,1)$, $…
A defensive alliance in an undirected graph $G=(V,E)$ is a non-empty set of vertices $S$ satisfying the condition that every vertex $v\in S$ has at least as many neighbours (including itself) in $S$ as it has in $V\setminus S$. We consider the notion of global minimality in this paper. We are interested in globally minimal defensive alliance of maximum size. This problem is known to be NP-hard but its parameterized complexity remains open until now. We enhance our understanding of the problem from the viewpoint of parameterized complexity by showing that the Globally Minimal Defensive Alliance…
We study the Directed Feedback Vertex Set problem parameterized by the treewidth of the input graph. We prove that unless the Exponential Time Hypothesis fails, the problem cannot be solved in time $2^{o(t\log t)}\cdot n^{\mathcal{O}(1)}$ on general directed graphs, where $t$ is the treewidth of the underlying undirected graph. This is matched by a dynamic programming algorithm with running time $2^{\mathcal{O}(t\log t)}\cdot n^{\mathcal{O}(1)}$. On the other hand, we show that if the input digraph is planar, then the running time can be improved to $2^{\mathcal{O}(t)}\cdot n^{\mathcal{O}(1)}$…
We study the problem Symmetric Directed Multicut from a parameterized complexity perspective. In this problem, the input is a digraph $D$, a set of cut requests $C=\{(s_1,t_1),\ldots,(s_\ell,t_\ell)\}$ and an integer $k$, and the task is to find a set $X \subseteq V(D)$ of size at most $k$ such that for every $1 \leq i \leq \ell$, $X$ intersects either all $(s_i,t_i)$-paths or all $(t_i,s_i)$-paths. Equivalently, every strongly connected component of $D-X$ contains at most one vertex out of $s_i$ and $t_i$ for every $i$. This problem is previously known from research in approximation algorithm…
{\sc Directed Feedback Vertex Set (DFVS)} is a fundamental computational problem that has received extensive attention in parameterized complexity. In this paper, we initiate the study of a wide generalization, the {\sc ${\cal H}$-free SCC Deletion} problem. Here, one is given a digraph $D$, an integer $k$ and the objective is to decide whether there is a vertex set of size at most $k$ whose deletion leaves a digraph where every strong component excludes graphs in the fixed finite family ${\cal H}$ as (not necessarily induced) subgraphs. When ${\cal H}$ comprises only the digraph with a single…

We give a parameterized algorithm for weighted vertex cover on graphs with maximum degree 3 whose time complexity is $O^*(1.402^t)$, where $t$ is the minimum size of a vertex cover of the input graph.
