We prove general equidistribution statements (both conditional and unconditional) relating to the Fourier coefficients of arithmetically normalized holomorphic Hecke cusp forms $f_1,\ldots,f_k$ without complex multiplication, of equal weight, (possibly different) squarefree level and trivial nebentypus. As a first application, we show that for the Ramanujan $τ$ function and any admissible $k$-tuple of distinct non-negative integers $a_1,\ldots,a_k$ the set $$ \{n \in \mathbb{N} : |τ(n+a_1)| < \cdots < |τ(n+a_k)|\} $$ has positive natural density. This result improves upon recent work of Bilu, Deshouillers, Gun and Luca [Compos. Math. (2018), no. 11, 2441-2461]. Secondly, we make progress towards understanding the signed version by showing that $$ \{n \in \mathbb{N} : τ(n+a_1) < τ(n+a_2) < τ(n+a_3)\} $$ has positive relative upper density at least $1/6$ for any admissible triple of distinct non-negative integers $(a_1,a_2,a_3).$ More generally, for such chains of inequalities of length $k > 3$ we show that under the assumption of Elliott's conjecture on correlations of multiplicative functions, the relative natural density of this set is $1/k!.$ Previously results of such type were known for $k\le 2$ as consequences of works by Serre and by Matomäki and Radziwill. Our results rely crucially on several key ingredients: i) a multivariate Erdős-Kac type theorem for the function $n \mapsto \log|τ(n)|$, conditioned on $n$ belonging to the set of non-vanishing of $τ$, generalizing work of Luca, Radziwill and Shparlinski; ii) the recent breakthrough of Newton and Thorne on the functoriality of symmetric power $L$-functions for $\text{GL}(n)$ for all $n \geq 2$ and its application to quantitative forms of the Sato-Tate conjecture; and iii) the work of Tao and Teräväinen on the logarithmic Elliott conjecture.
This work contains a proof of a non-trivial explicit quantitative bound in the eigenvalue aspect for the sup-norm of a SL(3,Z) Hecke-Maass cusp form restricted to a compact set.
Let $F$ and $G$ be Siegel cusp forms for $\Sp_4(\Z)$ and weights $k_1, k_2$ respectively. Also let $F$ and $G$ be Hecke eigenforms lying in distinct eigen spaces. Further suppose that neither $F$ nor $G$ is a Saito-Kurokawa lift. In this article, we study simultaneous arithmetic behaviour of Hecke eigenvalues of these Hecke eigenforms.
In this paper, we study the Drinfeld cusp forms for $Γ_1(T)$ and $Γ(T)$ using Teitelbaum's interpretation as harmonic cocycles. We obtain explicit eigenvalues of Hecke operators associated to degree one prime ideals acting on the cusp forms for $Γ_1(T)$ of small weights and conclude that these Hecke operators are simultaneously diagonalizable. We also show that the Hecke operators are not diagonalizable in general for $Γ_1(T)$ of large weights, and not for $Γ(T)$ even of small weights. The Hecke eigenvalues on cusp forms for $Γ(T)$ with small weights are determined and the eigenspaces characte…
We introduce a new trace formula of Kuznetsov type involving the central standard L-values and the Whittaker periods of cuspidal automorphic representations of PGL_n(Q) which are spherical at the archimedean place. As an application, we show a simultaneous non-vanishing of standard L-values at n-1 points on the critical strip for infinitely many Hecke-Maass cuspidal newforms.
In this paper, we show that half of non-zero coefficients of the spinor zeta function of a Siegel cusp form of genus 2 are positive and half are negative.
This note is concerned with the zeros of holomorphic Hecke cusp forms of large weight on the modular surface. The zeros of such forms are symmetric about three geodesic segments and we call those zeros that lie on these segments, real. Our main results give estimates for the number of real zeros as the weight goes to infinity.
We prove that the fourth moment of holomorphic Hecke cusp forms is bounded provided that the Riemann Hypothesis holds for an appropriate degree 8 L-function. We accomplish this using Watson's formula, which translates the question in hand into a moment problem for L-functions which is amenable to the techniques of Soundararajan and Harper on obtaining sharp bounds for moments of the Riemann zeta function.
In this article, the authors give a lower bound on the number of sign changes of Fourier coefficients of a non-zero degree two Siegel cusp form of even integral weight on a Hecke congruence subgroup. They also provide an explicit upper bound for the first sign change of Fourier coefficients of such Siegel cusp forms. Explicit upper bound on the first sign change of Fourier coefficients of a non-zero Siegel cusp form of even integral weight on the Siegel modular group for arbitrary genus were dealt in an earlier work of Choie, the first author and Kohnen.
We prove that the "naive" convolution Dirichlet series D_2(s) attached to a degree 2 Siegel Hecke cusp form F, has a pole at s=1. As an application, we write down the asymptotic formula for the partial sums of the squares of the eigenvalues of $F$ with an explicit error term. Further, as a corollary, we are able to show that the abscissa of absolute convergence of the (normalized) spinor zeta function attached to F is s = 1.
We consider sign changes of Fourier coefficients of Hecke-Maass cusp forms for the group $\mathrm{SL}_3(\mathbb Z)$. When the underlying form is self-dual, we show that there are $\gg_\varepsilon X^{5/6-\varepsilon}$ sign changes among the coefficients $\{A(m,1)\}_{m\leq X}$ and that there is a positive proportion of sign changes for many self-dual forms. Similar result concerning the positive proportion of sign changes also hold for the real-valued coefficients $A(m,m)$ for generic $\mathrm{GL}_3$ cusp forms, a result which is based on a new effective Sato-Tate type theorem for a family of $\…
Let F in S_k(Sp(2g, Z)) be a cuspidal Siegel eigenform of genus g with normalized Hecke eigenvalues mu_F(n). Suppose that the associated automorphic representation pi_F is locally tempered everywhere. For each c>0 we consider the set of primes p for which |mu_F(p)| >= c and we provide an explicit upper bound on the density of this set. In the case g=2, we also provide an explicit upper bound on the density of the set of primes p for which mu_F(p) >= c.
There are various reasons why a naive analog of the Maeda conjecture has to fail for Drinfeld cusp forms. Focussing on double cusp forms and using the link found by Teitelbaum between Drinfeld cusp forms and certain harmonic cochains, we observed a while ago that all obvious counterexamples disappear for certain Hecke-invariant subquotients of spaces of Drinfeld cusp forms of fixed weight, which can be defined naturally via representation theory. The present work extends Teitelbaum's isomorphism to an adelic setting and to arbitrary levels, it makes precise the impact of representation theory,…
In the literature, the standard approach to finding bases of spaces of modular forms is via modular symbols and the homology of modular curves. By using the Eichler-Shimura isomorphism, a work by Wang shows how one can use a cohomological viewpoint to determine bases of spaces of cusp forms on $Γ_0(N)$ of weight $k \geq 2$ and character $χ$. It is interesting to look at the complexity of this alternative approach, and we do this for an explicit implementation of the algorithm suggested by Wang.
Let $ψ$ be a function such that $ψ(x) \rightarrow \infty$ as $x \rightarrow \infty.$ Let $λ_{f}(n)$ be the $n$-th Hecke eigenvalue of a fixed holomorphic cusp form $f$ for $SL(2,\mathbb{Z}).$ We show that for any real valued function $h(x)$ such that $(\log X)^{2-2α} \ll h(X) =o(X),$ $$\sum_{n=x}^{x+h(X)} |λ_{f}(n)| \ll_{f} h(X)ψ(X)(\log X)^{α-1}$$ for all but $O_{f}( Xψ(X)^{-2})$ many integers $x\in [X,2X-h(X)],$ in which $α$ is the average value of $|λ_{f}(p)|$ over primes. We generalize this for $|λ_{f}(n)|^{2^{k}}$ for $k \in \mathbb{Z^{+}}.$
In this paper, we consider three problems about signs of the Fourier coefficients of a cusp form $\mathfrak{f}$ with half-integral weight:\begin{itemize}\item[--]The first negative coefficient of the sequence $\{\mathfrak{a}\_{\mathfrak{f}}(tn^2)\}\_{n\in \N}$,\item[--]The number of coefficients $\mathfrak{a}\_{\mathfrak{f}}(tn^2)$ of same signs,\item[--]Non-vanishing of coefficients $\mathfrak{a}\_{\mathfrak{f}}(tn^2)$ in short intervals and in arithmetic progressions,\end{itemize}where $\mathfrak{a}\_{\mathfrak{f}}(n)$ is the $n$-th Fourier coefficient of $\mathfrak{f}$ and $t$ is a square-f…
We investigate some key analytic properties of Fourier coefficients and Hecke eigenvalues attached to scalar-valued Siegel cusp forms $F$ of degree 2, weight $k$ and level $N$. First, assuming that $F$ is a Hecke eigenform that is not of Saito-Kurokawa type, we prove an improved bound in the $k$-aspect for the smallest prime at which its Hecke eigenvalue is negative. Secondly, we show that there are infinitely many sign changes among the Hecke eigenvalues of $F$ at primes lying in an arithmetic progression. Third, we show that there are infinitely many positive as well as infinitely many negat…
Let $f$ be a Hecke cusp form of weight $k$ for the full modular group, and let $\{λ_f(n)\}_{n\geq 1}$ be the sequence of its normalized Fourier coefficients. Motivated by the problem of the first sign change of $λ_f(n)$, we investigate the range of $x$ (in terms of $k$) for which there are cancellations in the sum $S_f(x)=\sum_{n\leq x} λ_f(n)$. We first show that $S_f(x)=o(x\log x)$ implies that $λ_f(n)<0$ for some $n\leq x$. We also prove that $S_f(x)=o(x\log x)$ in the range $\log x/\log\log k\to \infty$ assuming the Riemann hypothesis for $L(s, f)$, and furthermore that this range is best …
Matrix representations of Hecke operators on classical holomorphical cusp forms and corresponding period polynomials are well known. In this article we define Hecke operators on period functions and show that they correspond to the Hecke operators on Maass cusp forms. Moreover we give an explicite general compatibility criterion for formal sums of matrices to represent Hecke operators ob period functions. An explicite example with only nonnegative entries in the matrices is constructed.
In this paper we consider the question of when the set of Hecke eigenvalues of a cusp form on $GL_n(A_F)$ is contained in the set of Hecke eigenvalues of a cusp form on $GL_m(A_F)$ for $n \leq m$.This question is closely related to a question about finite dimensional representations of an abstract group, which also we consider in this work.
In this paper we express the multiple Hecke $L$-function in terms of a linear combination of iterated period integrals associated with elliptic cusp forms, which is introduced by Manin around 2004. This expression generalizes the classical formula of Hecke $L$-function obtained by the Mellin transformation of a cusp form. Also the expression gives a way of the analytic continuation of the multipleHecke $L$-function.
The standard realization of the Hecke algebra on classical holomorphic cusp forms and the corresponding period polynomials is well known. In this article we consider a nonstandard realization of the Hecke algebra on Maass cusp forms for the Hecke congruence subgroups Gamma_0(n). We show that the vector valued period functions derived recently by Hilgert, Mayer and Movasati as special eigenfunctions of the transfer operator for Gamma_0(n) are indeed related to the Maass cusp forms for these groups. This leads also to a simple interpretation of the ``Hecke like'' operators of these authors in te…

We consider the Fourier expansion of a Hecke (resp.\ Hecke--Maaß) cusp form of general level $N$ at the various cusps of $Γ_{0}(N)\bs\Hb$. We explain how to compute these coefficients via the local theory of $p$-adic Whittaker functions and establish a classical Voronoï summation formula allowing an arbitrary additive twist. Our discussion has applications to bounding sums of Fourier coefficients and understanding the (generalised) Atkin--Lehner relations.
Let S_{w+2} be the vector space of cusp forms of weight w+2 on the full modular group, and let S_{w+2}^* denote its dual space. Periods of cusp forms can be regarded as elements of S_{w+2}^*. The Eichler-Shimura isomorphism theorem asserts that odd (or even) periods span S_{w+2}^*. However, periods are not linearly independent; in fact, they satisfy the Eichler-Shimura relations. This leads to a natural question: which periods would form a basis of S_{w+2}^*. First we give an answer to this question. Passing to the dual space S_{w+2}, we will determine a new basis for S_{w+2}. The even period …
We prove, in respect of an arbitrary Hecke congruence subgroup Γ=Γ_0(q_0) of the group SL(2,Z[i]), some new upper bounds (or `spectral large sieve inequalities') for sums involving Fourier coefficients of Γ-automorphic cusp forms on SL(2,C). The Fourier coefficients in question may arise from the Fourier expansion at any given cusp c of Γ: our results are not limited to the case in which c is the cusp at infinity. For this reason, our proof is reliant upon an extension, to arbitrary cusps, of the spectral-Kloosterman sum formula for Γ\SL(2,C) obtained by Hristina Lokvenec-Guleska in her doctor…
Let F be a real quadratic field with ring of integers O and with class number 1. Let Gamma be a congruence subgroup of GL_2 (O). We describe a technique to compute the action of the Hecke operators on the cohomology H^3 (Gamma; C). For F real quadratic this cohomology group contains the cuspidal cohomology corresponding to cuspidal Hilbert modular forms of parallel weight 2. Hence this technique gives a way to compute the Hecke action on these Hilbert modular forms.
Matrix representations of Hecke operators on classical holomorphical cusp forms and the corresponding period polynomials are well known. In this article we derive representations of Hecke operators for vector valued period functions for the congruence subgroups $Γ_0(n)$. For this we use an integral transform from the space of vector valued cusp forms to the space of vector valued period functions.
In 1997, Serre proved that the eigenvalues of normalised $p$-th Hecke operator $T^{'}_p$ acting on the space of cusp forms of weight $k$ and level $N$ are equidistributed in $[-2,2]$ with respect to a measure that converge to the Sato-Tate measure, whenever $N+k \to \infty$. In 2009, Murty and Sinha proved the effective version of Serre's theorem. In 2011, using Kuznetsov trace formula, Lau and Wang derived the effective joint distribution of eigenvalues of normalized Hecke operators acting on the space of primitive cusp forms of weight $k$ and level $1$. In this paper, we extend the result of…
We show that the systems of Hecke eigenvalues occurring in the spaces of Siegel modular forms (mod p) of fixed dimension g, fixed level N, and varying weight, are the same as the systems occurring in the spaces of Siegel cusp forms with the same parameters and varying weight. In particular, in the case g=1, this says that the Hecke eigensystems (mod p) coming from classical modular forms are the same as those coming from cusp forms. The proof uses restriction to the superspecial locus. We also give a comparison of cusp forms on the Satake compactification versus the toroidal compactifications …
A well-known observation of Serre and Tate is that the Hecke algebra acts locally nilpotently on modular forms mod 2 on $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. We give an algorithm for calculating the degree of Hecke nilpotency for cusp forms, and we obtain a formula for the total number of cusp forms mod 2 of any given degree of nilpotency. Using these results, we find that the degrees of Hecke nilpotency in spaces $M_k$ have no limiting distribution as $k \rightarrow \infty$. As an application, we study the parity of the partition function using Hecke nilpotency.
We prove for L-function attached to an automorphic cusp form for the Hecke congruence group $Γ_0(D)$, which is also an eigenfunction of all the Hecke operators, that a positive proportion of its non-trivial zeros lie on the critical line. This result extends the work of J.L. Hafner of 1983 where the case of the full modular group is considered.
Let $η>0$ be a fixed positive number, let $N$ be a sufficiently large number. In this paper, we study the second moment of the sum of Hecke eigenvalues over primes in short intervals (whose length is $η\log N$) on average (with some weights) over the family of weight $k$ holomorphic Hecke cusp forms. We also generalize the above result to Hecke-Maass cusp forms for $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ and $SL(3,\mathbb{Z}).$ By applying the Hardy-Littlewood prime 2-tuples conjecture, we calculate the exact values of the mean values.
For certain algebraic Hecke characters chi of an imaginary quadratic field F we define an Eisenstein ideal in a p-adic Hecke algebra acting on cuspidal automorphic forms of GL_2/F. By finding congruences between Eisenstein cohomology classes (in the sense of G. Harder) and cuspidal classes we prove a lower bound for the index of the Eisenstein ideal in the Hecke algebra in terms of the special L-value L(0,chi). We further prove that its index is bounded from above by the order of the Selmer group of the p-adic Galois character associated to chi^{-1}. This uses the work of R. Taylor et al. on a…
A Hecke action on the space of periods of cusp forms, which is compatible with that on the space of cusp forms, was first computed using continued fraction and an explicit algebraic formula of Hecke operators acting on the space of period functions of modular forms was derived by studying the rational period functions. As an application an elementary proof of the Eichler-Selberg trace formula was derived. Similar modification has been applied to period space of Maass cusp forms with spectral parameter $s$. In this paper we study the space of period functions of Jacobi forms by means of Jacobi …
In this article, we derive a sub convexity estimate of Hecke eigen cusp forms associated to certain cocompact arithmetic subgroups of SL(2,R). The main result can be considered as the holomorphic version of the estimate of Hecke eigen Maass forms, derived in a famous paper of Iwaniec and Sarnak. A stronger estimate was derived by Khayutin and Steiner in arXiv:2009.07194. However, techniques used in both the papers are very different.
We compute the quantum variance of holomorphic cusp forms on the vertical geodesic for smooth, compactly supported test functions. The variance is related to an averaged shifted-convolution problem that we evaluate asymptotically. We encounter an off-diagonal term that matches exactly with a certain diagonal term, a feature reminiscent of moments of $L$-functions.
The Galois representations associated to weight $1$ newforms over $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p$ are remarkable in that they are unramified at $p$, but the computation of weight $1$ modular forms has proven to be difficult. One complication in this setting is that a weight $1$ cusp form over $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p$ need not arise from reducing a weight $1$ cusp form over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$. In this article we propose a unified "Hecke stability method" for computing spaces of weight $1$ modular forms of a given level in all characteristics simultaneously. Our main theorems outline conditions under which a f…
We explicitly construct cusp forms on the orthogonal group of signature $(1,8n+1)$ for an arbitrary natural number $n$ as liftings from Maass cusp forms of level one. In our previous works, the fundamental tool to show the automorphy of the lifting was the converse theorem by Maass. In this paper, we use the Fourier expansion of the theta lifts by Borcherds instead. We also study cuspidal representations generated by such cusp forms and show that they are irreducible and that all of their non-archimedean local components are non-tempered while the archimedean component is tempered, if the Maas…
We show that the image of repeated differentiation on weak cusp forms is precisely the subspace which is orthogonal to the space of weakly holomorphic modular forms. This gives a new interpretation of the weakly holomorphic Hecke eigenforms.
Cusp forms for the full modular group can be written as linear combination of double Eisenstein series introduced by Gangl, Kaneko and Zagier. We give an explicit formula for decomposing a Hecke eigenform into double Eisenstein series.
