We consider anti-plane shear deformations of an incompressible elastic solid whose reference configuration is an infinite cylinder with a cross section that is unbounded in one direction. For a class of generalized neo-Hookean strain energy densities and live body forces, we construct unbounded curves of front-type solutions using global bifurcation theory. Some of these curves contain solutions with deformations of arbitrarily large magnitude.
We study Hopf bifurcation from traveling-front solutions in the Cahn-Hilliard equation. The primary front is induced by a moving source term. Models of this form have been used to study a variety of physical phenomena, including pattern formation in chemical deposition and precipitation processes. Technically, we study bifurcation in the presence of essential spectrum. We contribute a simple and direct functional analytic method and determine bifurcation coefficients explicitly. Our approach uses exponential weights to recover Fredholm properties and spectral flow ideas to compute Fredholm ind…
We investigate a specific reaction-diffusion system that admits a monostable pulled front propagating at constant critical speed. When a small parameter changes sign, the stable equilibrium behind the front destabilizes, due to essential spectrum crossing the imaginary axis, causing a Turing bifurcation. Despite both equilibrium states are unstable, the front continues to exist, and is shown to be asymptotically stable, against suitably-localized perturbations, with algebraic temporal decay rate $t^{-3/2}$. To obtain such decay, we rely on point-wise semigroup estimates, and show that the Turi…
This manuscript extends the analysis of a much studied singularly perturbed three-component reaction-diffusion system for front dynamics in the regime where the essential spectrum is close to the origin. We confirm a conjecture from a preceding paper by proving that the triple multiplicity of the zero eigenvalue gives a Jordan chain of length three. Moreover, we simplify the center manifold reduction and computation of the normal form coefficients by using the Evans function for the eigenvalues. Finally, we prove the unfolding of a Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation with symmetry in the model. This l…
We study invasion fronts and spreading speeds in two component reaction-diffusion systems. Using a variation of Lin's method, we construct traveling front solutions and show the existence of a bifurcation to locked fronts where both components invade at the same speed. Expansions of the wave speed as a function of the diffusion constant of one species are obtained. The bifurcation can be sub or super-critical depending on whether the locked fronts exist for parameter values above or below the bifurcation value. Interestingly, in the sub-critical case numerical simulations reveal that the sprea…
It is proved that for the 2-dimensional case with random shear flow of the G-equation model with strain term, the strain term reduces the front propagation. Also an improvement of the main result by Armstrong-Souganidis is provided.
We establish the variational principle of Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piskunov (KPP) front speeds in temporally random shear flows inside an infinite cylinder, under suitable assumptions of the shear field. A key quantity in the variational principle is the almost sure Lyapunov exponent of a heat operator with random potential. The variational principle then allows us to bound and compute the front speeds. We show the linear and quadratic laws of speed enhancement as well as a resonance-like dependence of front speed on the temporal shear correlation length. To prove the variational principle, we use…
We prove the existence of reaction-diffusion traveling fronts in mean zero space-time periodic shear flows for nonnegative reactions including the classical KPP (Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piskunov) nonlinearity. For the KPP nonlinearity, the minimal front speed is characterized by a variational principle involving the principal eigenvalue of a space-time periodic parabolic operator. Analysis of the variational principle shows that adding a mean-zero space time periodic shear flow to an existing mean zero space-periodic shear flow leads to speed enhancement. Computation of KPP minimal speeds is perf…
This paper is concerned with the analysis of speed-up of reaction-diffusion-advection traveling fronts in infinite cylinders with periodic boundary conditions. The advection is a shear flow with a large amplitude and the reaction is nonnegative, with either positive or zero ignition temperature. The unique or minimal speeds of the traveling fronts are proved to be asymptotically linear in the flow amplitude as the latter goes to infinity, solving an open problem from \cite{b}. The asymptotic growth rate is characterized explicitly as the unique or minimal speed of traveling fronts for a limiti…
This paper is devoted to the study of travelling fronts of reaction-diffusion equations with periodic advection in the whole plane $\mathbb R^2$. We are interested in curved fronts satisfying some "conical" conditions at infinity. We prove that there is a minimal speed $c^*$ such that curved fronts with speed $c$ exist if and only if $c\geq c^*$. Moreover, we show that such curved fronts are decreasing in the direction of propagation, that is they are increasing in time. We also give some results about the asymptotic behaviors of the speed with respect to the advection, diffusion and reaction …
Variational principle for Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piskunov (KPP) minimal front speeds provides an efficient tool for statistical speed analysis, as well as a fast and accurate method for speed computation. A variational principle based analysis is carried out on the ensemble of KPP speeds through spatially stationary random shear flows inside infinite channel domains. In the regime of small root mean square (rms) shear amplitude, the enhancement of the ensemble averaged KPP front speeds is proved to obey the quadratic law under certain shear moment conditions. Similarly, in the large rms amplitud…
We develop a global bifurcation theory for two classes of nonlinear elastic materials. It is supposed that they are subjected to anti-plane shear deformation and occupy an infinite cylinder in the reference configuration. Curves of solutions to the corresponding elastostatic problem are constructed using analytic global bifurcation theory. The curve associated with first class is shown to exhibit broadening behavior, while for the second we find that the governing equation undergoes a loss ellipticity in the limit. A sequence of solutions undergoes broadening when their effective supports grow…
We consider a nonlocal generalization of the Fisher-KPP equation in one spatial dimension. As a parameter is varied the system undergoes a Turing bifurcation. We study the dynamics near this Turing bifurcation. Our results are two-fold. First, we prove the existence of a two-parameter family of bifurcating stationary periodic solutions and derive a rigorous asymptotic approximation of these solutions. We also study the spectral stability of the bifurcating stationary periodic solutions with respect to almost co-periodic perturbations. Secondly, we restrict to a specific class of exponential ke…
Speed ensemble of bistable (combustion) fronts in mean zero stationary Gaussian shear flows inside two and three dimensional channels is studied with a min-max variational principle. In the small root mean square regime of shear flows, a new class of multi-scale test functions are found to yield speed asymptotics. The quadratic speed enhancement law holds with probability arbitrarily close to one under the almost sure continuity (dimension two) and mean square Hölder regularity (dimension three) of the shear flows. Remarks are made on the conditions for the linear growth of front speed expecta…
This work studies front formation in the Allen-Cahn equation with a parameter heterogeneity which slowly varies in space. In particular, we consider a heterogeneity which mediates the local stability of the zero state and subsequent pitchfork bifurcation to a non-trivial state. For slowly-varying ramps which are either rigidly propagating in time or stationary, we rigorously establish existence and stability of positive, monotone fronts and give leading order expansions for their interface location. For non-zero ramp speeds, and sufficiently small ramp slopes, the front location is determined …
We prove the existence and uniqueness, up to a shift in time, of curved traveling fronts for a reaction-advection-diffusion equation with a combustion-type nonlinearity. The advection is through a shear flow $q$. This analyzes, for instance, the shape of flames produced by a Bunsen burner in the presence of advection. We also give a formula for the speed of propagation of these conical fronts in terms of the well-known speed of planar pulsating traveling waves.
When the steady states at infinity become unstable through a pattern forming bifurcation, a travelling wave may bifurcate into a modulated front which is time-periodic in a moving frame. This scenario has been studied by B.Sandstede and A.Scheel for a class of reaction-diffusion systems on the real line. Under general assumptions, they showed that the modulated fronts exist and are spectrally stable near the bifurcation point. Here we consider a model problem for which we can prove the nonlinear stability of these solutions with respect to small localized perturbations. This result does not fo…
We consider the one-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation coupled to a conservation law. As a parameter increases the system undergoes a Turing bifurcation. We study the dynamics near this bifurcation. First, we show that stationary, periodic solutions bifurcate from a homogeneous ground state. Second, we construct modulating traveling fronts which model an invasion of the unstable ground state by the periodic solutions. This provides a mechanism of pattern formation for the studied system. The existence proof uses center manifold theory for a reduction to a finite-dimensional problem. This is …
G-equations are well-known front propagation models in turbulent combustion and describe the front motion law in the form of local normal velocity equal to a constant (laminar speed) plus the normal projection of fluid velocity. In level set formulation, G-equations are Hamilton-Jacobi equations with convex ($L^1$ type) but non-coercive Hamiltonians. Viscous G-equations arise from either numerical approximations or regularizations by small diffusion. The nonlinear eigenvalue $\bar H$ from the cell problem of the viscous G-equation can be viewed as an approximation of the inviscid turbulent fla…
We analyze the transition between pulled and pushed fronts both analytically and numerically from a model-independent perspective. Based on minimal conceptual assumptions, we show that pushed fronts bifurcate from a branch of pulled fronts with an effective speed correction that scales quadratically in the bifurcation parameter. Strikingly, we find that in this general context without assumptions on comparison principles, the pulled front loses stability and gives way to a pushed front when monotonicity in the leading edge is lost. Our methods rely on far-field core decompositions that identif…
