Erbium-doped ZBLAN is the most commonly used glass for mid-infrared fiber lasers. In this paper we quantify the energy dynamics of the erbium ions which is important for improving the performance of mid infrared fiber lasers. Previous studies have found a discrepancy between the strength of inter-ion energy transfer measured in bulk Er:ZBLAN and the strength required to explain current fiber laser performance. We have measured the energy transfer of the 4I13/2 + 4I13/2 -> 4I15/2 + 4I9/2 energy transfer process directly in a range of fibers for the first time.
We demonstrate the broadband supercontinuum (SC) generation in photonic crystal fiber (PCF), highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) and ZBLAN (ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF) fiber with a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL). The passively mode-locked EDFL incorporates a CNT-based saturable absorber and has achieved a pulse width of 620 fs with a pulse repetition rate of 18 MHz. The spectral broadening phenomena inside each fiber has been observed with respect to the variation in seed pulse power. The SC spectrum bandwidth of 1050 nm, 1400 nm, and 2000 nm has been achieved using PCF, HNLF, an…
We report on a long wavelength emitting rare earth doped fiber laser with emission centered at 3.5 μm and tunable across 450 nm. The longest wavelength emission was 3.78 μm, which is the longest emission from a fiber laser operating at room temperature. In a simple optical arrangement employing dielectric mirrors for feedback, the laser was capable of emitting 1.45 W of near diffraction limited output power at 3.47 μm. These emission characteristics compliment the emission from quantum cascade lasers and demonstrate how all infrared dual wavelength pumping can be used to access high lying rare…
Mid-infrared saturable absorber mirror is successfully fabricated by transferring the mechanically exfoliated black phosphorus onto the gold-coated mirror. With the as-prepared black phosphorus saturable absorber mirror, a continuous-wave passively mode-locked Er:ZBLAN fiber laser is demonstrated at the wavelength of 2.8 um, which delivers a maximum average output power of 613 mW, a repetition rate of 24 MHz and a pulse duration of 42 ps. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to demonstrate black phosphorus mode-locked laser at 2.8 um wavelength. Our results demonstrate the feasib…
We demonstrate a mid-infrared dysprosium-doped fluoride fiber laser with a continuously tunable output range of 573 nm, pumped by a 1.7 μm Raman fiber laser. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the largest tuning range achieved to date from any rare-earth-doped fiber laser and, critically, spans the 2.8-3.4 μm spectral region, which contains absorption resonances of many important functional groups and is uncovered by other rare-earth ions. Output powers up to 170 mW are achieved, with 21% slope efficiency. We also discuss the relative merits of the 1.7 μm pump scheme, including poss…
Recent advances in power scaling of fiber lasers are hindered by the thermal issues, which deteriorate the beam quality. Anti-Stokes fluorescence cooling has been suggested as a viable method to balance the heat generated by the quantum defect and background absorption. Such radiation-balanced configurations rely on the availability of cooling-grade rare-earth-doped gain materials. Herein, we perform a series of tests on a ytterbium-doped ZBLAN optical fiber to extract its laser cooling-related parameters and show that it is a viable laser cooling medium for radiation-balancing. In particular,…
Soliton operation and soliton wavelength tuning of erbium-doped fiber lasers mode locked with atomic layer graphene was experimentally investigated under various cavity dispersion conditions. It was shown that not only wide range soliton wavelength tuning but also soltion pulse width variation could be obtained in the fiber lasers. Our results show that the graphene mode locked erbium-doped fiber lasers provide a compact, user friendly and low cost wavelength tunable ultrahsort pulse source.
Stimulated emission of sensitized Erbium atoms is reported in silicon-rich silicon nitride waveguides. Visible pump and infrared probe measurements are carried out in waveguides fabricated from erbium-doped silicon rich silicon nitride. A decrease in the photoinduced absorption of the probe in the wavelength range of the erbium emission is observed and is attributed to stimulated emission from erbium atoms excited indirectly via the silicon excess in an SiNx matrix. A near 50% decrease in absorption is measured, corresponding to an 8% fraction of inverted erbium atoms. This fraction is an orde…
We demonstrate a 7-core erbium doped fiber amplifier employing side pumping using tapered multimode fiber. The amplifier has multicore inputs and outputs which can be readily spliced to multicore transmission fiber for amplifying space division multiplexed signals. Gain over 25dB was obtained in each of the cores over a 40-nm bandwidth covering C-band.
We report on an ytterbium-free erbium-doped aluminophosphosilicate all-fiber laser, producing an output power of 25 W at a wavelength of 1584 nm with a slope efficiency of 30% with respect to the 976 nm absorbed pump power. The simple cavity design proposed takes advantage of fiber Bragg gratings written directly in the gain fiber. The single-mode erbium-doped aluminophosphosilicate fiber was fabricated in-house and was doped with 0.06 mol.% of Er2O3, 1.77 mol.% of Al2O3 and 1.04 mol.% of P2O5. The incorporation of aluminium and phosphorus into the fiber core allowed for an increased concentra…
An efficient method to fabricate transparent glass ceramic fibers containing in-situ grown Er3+-doped oxide nanoparticles is presented. Characterization of the drawn fibers exhibits low loss (0.4 dB/m) and broadened Er3+ emission spectrum. This attractive method offers new scopes for fiber amplifiers.
An erbium doped micro-laser is demonstrated utilizing $\mathrm{SiO_{2}}$ microdisk resonators on a silicon chip. Passive microdisk resonators exhibit whispering gallery type (WGM) modes with intrinsic optical quality factors of up to $6\times{10^{7}}$ and were doped with trivalent erbium ions (peak concentration $\mathrm{\sim3.8\times{10^{20}cm^{-3})}}$ using MeV ion implantation. Coupling to the fundamental WGM of the microdisk resonator was achieved by using a tapered optical fiber. Upon pumping of the $^{4}% I_{15/2}\longrightarrow$ $^{4}I_{13/2}$ erbium transition at 1450 nm, a gradual tra…
In rare-earth-doped silica optical fibres, the homogeneous distribution of amplifying ions and part of their spectroscopic properties are usually improved by adding selected elements, such as phosphorus or aluminum, as structural modifier. In erbium ion (Er3+) doped fibres, phosphorus preferentially coordinates to Er3+ ions to form regular cages around it. However, the crystalline structures described in literature never gave particular spectroscopic signature. In this article, we report emission and excitation spectra of Er3+ in a transparent phosphorus-doped silica fibre preform. The observe…
Optical emission from rare-earth-doped fluoride fibers has thus far been limited to less than 4 μm. We extend emission beyond this limit by employing an indium fluoride (InF3) glass fiber as the host, which exhibits an increased infrared transparency over commonly used zirconium fluoride (ZBLAN). Near-infrared pumping of a dysprosium-doped InF3 fiber results in broad emission centered around 4.3 μm, representing the longest emission yet achieved from a fluoride fiber. The first laser emission in an InF3 fiber is also demonstrated from the 3 μm dysprosium transition. Finally, a frequency domain…
Optical fiber tapers are used to collect photoluminescence emission at ~1.5 um from photonic crystal cavities fabricated in erbium doped silicon nitride on silicon. Photoluminescence collection via fiber taper is enhanced 2.5 times relative to free space, with a total taper collection efficiency of 53%. By varying the fiber taper offset from the cavity, a broad tuning range of coupling strength is obtained. This material system combined with fiber taper collection is promising for building on-chip optical amplifiers.

This model is a much needed tool for optimizing and understanding the performance of these laser systems. Comparisons between simulation and experimental results for three different systems are presented.
Black phosphorus, a newly emerged two-dimensional material, has attracted wide attention as novel photonic material. Here, multi-layer black phosphorus is successfully fabricated by liquid phase exfoliation method. By employing black phosphorus as saturable absorber, we demonstrate a passively Q-switched Er-doped ZBLAN fiber laser at the wavelength of 2.8 μm. The modulation depth and saturation fluence of the black phosphorus saturable absorber are measured to be 15% and 9 μJ/cm2, respectively. The Q-switched fiber laser delivers a maximum average power of 485 mW with corresponding pulse energ…
Plasmonic gratings and nano-particle arrays in a metal-insulator-metal structures are fabricated on an erbium doped silicon nitride layer. This material system enables simple fabrication of the structure, since the active nitride layer can be directly grown on metal. Enhancement of collected emission of up to 12 is observed on resonance, while broad off-resonant enhancement is also present. The output polarization behavior of the gratings and nano-particle arrays is investigated and matched to plasmonic resonances, and the behavior of coupled modes as a function of inter-particle distance is a…
In this paper, we report an experimental study of noise features of polarized and unpolarized amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) with narrow optical bandwidth, registered from a conventional low-doped erbium fiber. We demonstrate that ASE noise can be considered as train of Gaussian-like pulses with random magnitudes, widths, and inter- pulse intervals. The statistical properties of these three parameters of noise pulsing are analyzed. We also present the results on the influence of ASE noise upon optical spectrum broadening, produced by self-phase modulation at propagating along communicati…
We demonstrate wavelength-wavelength correlations of classical broad-band amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) photons emitted by an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) in a wavelength regime around 1530nm. We then apply these classical correlated photons in the framework of a real-world ghost spectroscopy experiment at a wavelength of 1533nm to acetylene (C2H2) reproducing the characteristic absorption features of the C-H stretch and rotational bands. This proof-of-principle experiment confirms the generalization of an ASE source concept offering an attractive light source for classical ghost…
Developing of new rare-earth (RE)-doped optical fibres for power amplifiers and lasers requires continuous improvements in the fibre spectroscopic properties (like shape and width of the gain curve, optical quantum efficiency, resistance to spectral hole burning and photodarkening...). Silica glass as a host material for fibres has proved to be very attractive. However, some potential applications of RE-doped fibres suffer from limitations in terms of spectroscopic properties resulting from clustering or inappropriate local environment when doped into silica. To this aim, we present a new rout…
A tunable and switchable multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on a new type tunable comb filter is proposed and demonstrated. By adjusting the polarization controllers, dual-function operation of the channel spacing tunability and the wavelength switching (interleaving) can be readily achieved. Up to 29 stable lasing lines with 0.4 nm spacing and 14 lasing wavelengths with 0.8 nm spacing in 3 dB bandwidth were obtained at room temperature. In addition, the lasing output, including the number of the lasing lines, the lasing evenness and the lasing locations, can also be flexibly…
We report on the observation of puzzling nonuniform, but ordered, frequency combs in erbium-doped fiber lasers at low temperatures, between 3 K and 14 K. At ~14 K the combs disappear. The combs contain ~240 lines and have nonuniform frequency spacings that starts from ~25 GHz at ~1540.5 nm and decreases, almost monotonically, to ~100 MHz within (1.8-2) nm. We discuss possibilities that they result from enlarged regular mode-comb spacings, from prime numbers-based solitary waves free of four-wave mixing or result from gain gratings. However, we think that the combs originate from multi-lasing l…
In this work, we show that the application of a sol-gel coating renders a microbubble whispering gallery resonator into an active device. During the fabrication of the resonator, a thin layer of erbium-doped sol-gel is applied to a tapered microcapillary, then a microbubble with a wall thickness of 1.3 $μ$m is formed with the rare earth diffused into its walls. The doped microbubble is pumped at 980 nm and lasing in the emission band of the Er$^{3+}$ ions with a wavelength of 1535 nm is observed. The laser wavelength can be tuned by aerostatic pressure tuning of the whispering gallery modes of…
The erbium-doped Lithium niobate on insulator (Er:LNOI) platform has great promise in the application of telecommunication, microwave photonics, and quantum photonics due to its excellent electro-optic, piezo-electric, nonlinear nature as well as the gain characteristics in the telecommunication C-band. Here, we report a single-frequency Er:LNOI integrated laser based on dual-cavity structure. Facilitated by the Vernier effect and gain competition, the single-frequency laser can operate stably at 1531-nm wavelength with a 1484-nm pump laser. The output laser has a power of 0.31 uW, a linewidth…
Space-division multiplexing (SDM), whereby multiple spatial channels in multimode and multicore optical fibers are used to increase the total transmission capacity per fiber, is being investigated to avert a data capacity crunch and reduce the cost per transmitted bit. With the number of channels employed in SDM transmission experiments continuing to rise, there is a requirement for integrated SDM components that are scalable. Here, we demonstrate a cladding-pumped SDM erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) that consists of six uncoupled multimode erbium-doped cores. Each core supports three spat…
One-dimensional nanobeam photonic crystal cavities are fabricated in an Er-doped amorphous silicon nitride layer. Photoluminescence from the cavities around 1.54 um is studied at cryogenic and room temperatures at different optical pump powers. The resonators demonstrate Purcell enhanced absorption and emission rates, also confirmed by time-resolved measurements. Resonances exhibit linewidth narrowing with pump power, signifying absorption bleaching and the onset of stimulated emission in the material at both 5.5 K and room temperature. We estimate from the cavity linewidths that Er has been p…
The dynamics of dissipative solitons (DSs) are explored in a high repetition rate normal-dispersion erbium-doped fiber laser for the first time. Despite of the high fundamental repetition rate of 129 MHz and thus the low pulse energy, a DS train with a dechirped pulse width of 418 fs, period-doubling of single and dual DSs, as well as 258 MHz 2nd-order harmonic mode-locking of DSs can be observed in the fiber laser with increasing pump power and appropriate settings. A transmitted semiconductor saturable absorber and a wavelength division multiplexer/isolator/tap hybrid module are employed to …
We experimentally quantify the contribution of magnetic dipole (MD) transitions to the near-infrared light emission from trivalent erbium-doped yttrium oxide (Er$^{3+}$:Y$_2$O$_3$). Using energy-momentum spectroscopy, we demonstrate that the $^4$I$_{13/2}{\to}^4$I$_{15/2}$ emission near 1.5 $μ$m originates from nearly equal contributions of electric dipole (ED) and MD transitions that exhibit distinct emission spectra. We then show how these distinct spectra, together with the differing local density of optical states (LDOS) for ED and MD transitions, can be leveraged to control Er$^{3+}$ emis…
We report high-energy mid-infrared pulse generation by Q-switching of dysprosium-doped fiber lasers for the first time. Two different modulation techniques are demonstrated. Firstly, using active acousto-optic modulation, pulses are produced with up to 12 μJ energy and durations as short as 270 ns, with variable repetition rates from 100 Hz to 20 kHz and central wavelengths tunable from 2.97 to 3.23 μm. Experiments are supported by numerical modeling, identifying routes for improved pulse energies and to avoid multi-pulsing by careful choice of modulator parameters. Secondly, we demonstrate pa…
The analogue of the paramagnetic to spin-glass phase transition in disordered magnetic systems, leading to the phenomenon of replica symmetry breaking, has been recently demonstrated in a two-dimensional random laser consisting of an organic-based amorphous solid-state thin film. We report here the first demonstration of replica symmetry breaking in a one-dimensional photonic system consisting of an erbium-doped random fiber laser operating in the continuous-wave regime based on a unique random fiber grating system, which plays the role of the random scatterers and operates in the Anderson loc…
We proposed a narrow spectral bandwidth Erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser Q-switched by a homemade saturable dynamic induced grating (SDIG) which is introduced via reforming the structure of a fiber saturable absorbers FSA with a piece of EDF and a fiber Bragg grating. The SDIG integrates both saturable absorption and spectral filtering effect simultaneously, which was confirmed through theoretical analysis and experimental results for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Further study verified that the spectral width of the Q-switched emissions is decided by the length of the SDIG and t…

We demonstrate an optical unstable phase for a laser driven erbium ion ensemble. The transmitted light through an erbium-doped yttrium orthosillicate crystal becomes dynamically unstable when illuminated by a strong continuous-wave laser. Transient net gain was recorded if the light passes the sample twice. The experimental results are understood in the framework of a many-body system interacting with a classical field, where the ion-ion interaction becomes significant as a result of the high erbium concentration. A Bloch-equation model that includes the excitation-induced frequency-shift is i…
We report on large energy pulse generation in an erbium-doped fiber laser passively mode-locked with atomic layer graphene. Stable mode locked pulses with single pulse energy up to 7.3 nJ and pulse width of 415 fs have been directly generated from the laser. Our results show that atomic layer graphene could be a promising saturable absorber for large energy mode locking.
This work reports optical functionality contained in, as well as and produced by, thin film coatings. A sol-gel process, formulated with precursor active ingredients of erbium oxide and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), was used for spin-coating thin (~130 nm) erbium-doped (~6 at. %) silica films on single-crystal silicon. Annealed films produce infrared emission in the 1.5-micron band from erbium ions in the film, as well as greatly enhancing (~100X) band-gap emission from the underlying silicon. The distinctly different mechanisms for the two modes of optical activities are interpreted in term…
A theoretical model for laser cooled continuous-wave fiber amplifier is presented. The amplification process takes place in the Tm3+-doped core of the fluoride ZBLAN (ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF) glass fiber. The cooling process takes place in the Yb3+:ZBLAN fiber cladding. It is shown that for each value of the pump power and the amplified signal there is a distribution of the concentration of the Tm3+ along the length of the fiber amplifier, which provides its athermal operation. The influence of a small deviation in the value of the amplified signal on the temperature of the fiber with the fixe…
A high-performance S-band single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) erbium-doped fiber (EDF) ring cavity laser based on a depressed cladding EDF is investigated and experimentally demonstrated. We combine a double-ring passive resonator (DR-PR) and a length of unpumped polarization maintaining (PM) EDF in the laser cavity to achieve the SLM lasing without mode hopping. The DR-PR, composed of two efficient dual-coupler fiber rings, is utilized to expand the free spectral range of the EDF ring cavity laser and to eliminate the dense longitudinal modes greatly. The PM EDF, insusceptible to random change ind…

Microdisks and microstadium resonators were fabricated on erbium doped amorphous hydrogenated silicon (a-Si:H<Er>) layers sandwiched in air and native SiO2 on Si substrates. Annealing condition is optimized to allow large emission at 1550 nm for samples with erbium concentrations as high as 1.02x10^20 atoms/cm3. Near field scanning optical microscopy shows evidences of the simultaneous presence of bow-tie and diamond scars. These modes indicate the high quality of the resonators and the potentiality for achieving amorphous silicon microcavity lasers.

Rare earth (RE) doped silica-based optical fibers with transparent glass ceramic (TGC) core was fabricated through the well-known modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD) process without going through the commonly used stage of post-ceramming. The main characteristics of the RE-doped oxyde nanoparticles namely, their density and mean diameter in the fibers are dictated by the concentration of alkaline earth element used as phase separating agent. Magnesium and erbium co-doped fibers were fabricated. Optical transmission in term of loss due to scattering as well as some spectroscopic character…
Upconversion of infrared photons is a promising possibility to enhance solar cell efficiency by producing electricity from otherwise unused sub-band-gap photons. The input parameters for the model are experimentally determined for the material system β-NaEr0.2Y0.8F4. The determination of the transition probabilities, also known as the Einstein coef…
We overcome the difficulty in realizing a monolithic waveguide-coupled microring laser integrated on erbium-doped thin film lithium niobate (Er: TFLN) using photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching (PLACE) technique. We demonstrate an integrated single-frequency microring laser operating around 1531 nm wavelength. The PLACE technique, enabling integrated Er: TFLN photonics with low propagation loss, can thus be used to realize low cost mass production of monolithic on-chip microlasers with applications ranging from optical communication and photonic integrated circuit (PIC) to precis…
