In this paper we study finite element method for three-dimensional incompressible resistive magnetohydrodynamic equations, in which the velocity, the current density, and the magnetic induction are divergence-free. It is desirable that the discrete solutions should also satisfy divergence-free conditions exactly especially for the momentum equations. Inspired by constrained transport method,we devise a new stable mixed finite element method that can achieve the goal. We also prove the well-posedness of the discrete solutions. To solve the resulting linear algebraic equations, we propose a GMRES solver with an augmented Lagrangian block preconditioner. By numerical experiments, we verify the theoretical results and demonstrate the quasi-optimality of the discrete solver with respect to the number of degrees of freedom
We construct finite element methods for the incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) system that precisely preserve magnetic and cross helicity, the energy law and the magnetic Gauss law at the discrete level. The variables are discretized as discrete differential forms in a de Rham complex. We present numerical tests to show the performance of the algorithm.

Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is a continuum level model for conducting fluids subject to external magnetic fields, e.g. plasmas and liquid metals. The efficient and robust solution of the MHD system poses many challenges due to it's nonlinear, non self-adjoint, and highly coupled nature. In this paper, we develop a robust and accurate a posteriori error estimate for the numerical solution of the MHD equations based on the exact penalty method. The error estimate also isolates particular contributions of error in a quantity of interest (QoI) to inform discretization choices to arrive at accurate …

We construct a divergence-free HDG scheme for the Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes phase field model. The scheme is robust in the convection-dominated regime, produce a globally divergence-free velocity approximation, and can be efficiently implemented via static condensation. Two numerical benchmark problems, namely the rising bubble problem, and the Rayleigh-Taylor instability problem are used to show the good performance of the proposed scheme.

A fully discretization, unconditionally energy stable finite element method solving the thermodynamically consistent diffuse interface model for incompressible two-phase MHD flows with large density ratios
In this paper we analyze a pressure-robust method based on divergence-free mixed finite element methods with continuous interior penalty stabilization. The main goal is to prove an $O(h^{k+1/2})$ error estimate for the $L^2$ norm of the velocity in the convection dominated regime. This bound is pressure robust (the error bound of the velocity does not depend on the pressure) and also convection robust (the constants in the error bounds are independent of the Reynolds number).
In this work, we develop a high-order collocation method using radial basis function (RBF) for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation (NSE) on the rotating sphere. The method is based on solving the projection of the NSE on the space of divergence-free functions. For that, we use matrix valued kernel functions which allow an analytically divergence-free approximation of the velocity field. Using kernel functions which lead to rotation-free approximations, the pressure can be recovered by a simple kernel exchange in one of the occurring approximations, without solving an additional Poisson p…

We introduce a new hybridized discontinuous Galerkin method for the incompressible magnetohydrodynamics equations. If particular velocity, pressure, magnetic field, and magnetic pressure spaces are employed for both element and trace solution fields, we arrive at an energy stable method which returns pointwise divergence-free velocity fields and magnetic fields and properly balances linear momentum. We discretize in time using a second-order-in-time generalized-$α$ method, and we present a block iterative method for solving the resulting nonlinear system of equations at each time step. We nume…

We present a scalable block preconditioning strategy for the trace system coming from the high-order hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretization of incompressible resistive magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). We construct the block preconditioner with a least squares commutator (BFBT) approximation for the inverse of the Schur complement that segregates out the pressure unknowns of the trace system. The remaining velocity, magnetic field, and Lagrange multiplier unknowns form a coupled nodal unknown block (the upper block), for which a system algebraic multigrid (AMG) is used for the approx…
We propose a constraint preserving discontinuous Galerkin method for ideal compressible MHD in two dimensions and using Cartesian grids, which automatically maintains the global divergence-free property. The approximation of the magnetic field is achieved using Raviart-Thomas polynomials and the DG scheme is based on evolving certain moments of these polynomials which automatically guarantees divergence-free property. We also develop HLL-type multi-dimensional Riemann solvers to estimate the electric field at vertices which are consistent with the 1-D Riemann solvers. When limiters are used, t…
We consider a stabilization method for divergence-conforming B-spline discretizations of the incompressible Navier--Stokes problem wherein jumps in high-order normal derivatives of the velocity field are penalized across interior mesh facets. We prove that this method is pressure robust, consistent, and energy stable, and we show how to select the stabilization parameter appearing in the method so that excessive numerical dissipation is avoided in both the cross-wind direction and in the diffusion-dominated regime. We examine the efficacy of the method using a suite of numerical experiments, a…
In this work we consider the numerical solution of incompressible flows on two-dimensional manifolds. Whereas the compatibility demands of the velocity and the pressure spaces are known from the flat case one further has to deal with the approximation of a velocity field that lies only in the tangential space of the given geometry. Abandoning $H^1$-conformity allows us to construct finite elements which are -- due to an application of the Piola transformation -- exactly tangential. To reintroduce continuity (in a weak sense) we make use of (hybrid) discontinuous Galerkin techniques. To further…
We construct a structure-preserving finite element method and time-stepping scheme for inhomogeneous, incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). The method preserves energy, cross-helicity (when the fluid density is constant), magnetic helicity, mass, total squared density, pointwise incompressibility, and the constraint $\operatorname{div} B = 0$ to machine precision, both at the spatially and temporally discrete levels.
