Cosmological correlators are very important objects in cosmology as they offer us a huge amount of information of the early universe. They reside on the future boundary of a de Sitter space and can be calculated by two methods. First method involves our old Lagrangian picture where we evaluate the bulk time integrals to find the correlator at the future boundary. The other method which is our main topic of interest is to find the correlators by imposing constraints from symmetries and singularities on the future boundary. Particularly, we obtain the differential equation satisfied by the correlator by imposing de Sitter isometries which act on the future boundary just like the conformal symmetry. Then we analytically solve this differential equation by imposing boundary conditions coming from the correct normalization of the physical singularities and absence of the unphysical ones. In the process we see emergence of the effects of time dependent background like particle production and also obtain their observable signatures in the correlators. Finally we compare our analytical solution with the numerical ones.
We analyze the singularities of the two-point function in a conformal field theory at finite temperature. In a free theory, the only singularity is along the boundary light cone. In the holographic limit, a new class of singularities emerges since two boundary points can be connected by a nontrivial null geodesic in the bulk, encircling the photon sphere of the black hole. We show that these new singularities are resolved by tidal effects due to the black hole curvature, by solving the string worldsheet theory in the Penrose limit. Singularities in the asymptotically flat black hole geometry a…
We give a procedure for deriving certain bulk S-matrix elements from corresponding boundary correlators. These are computed in the plane wave limit, via an explicit construction of certain boundary sources that give bulk wavepackets. A critical role is played by a specific singular behavior of the lorentzian boundary correlators. It is shown in examples how correlators derived from the bulk supergravity exhibit the appropriate singular structure, and reproduce the corresponding S-matrix elements. This construction thus provides a nontrivial test for whether a given boundary conformal field the…
Much of the structure of cosmological correlators is controlled by their singularities, which in turn are fixed in terms of flat-space scattering amplitudes. An important challenge is to interpolate between the singular limits to determine the full correlators at arbitrary kinematics. This is particularly relevant because the singularities of correlators are not directly observable, but can only be accessed by analytic continuation. In this paper, we study rational correlators, including those of gauge fields, gravitons, and the inflaton, whose only singularities at tree level are poles and wh…
We calculate the threshold singularities in one-dimensional models using the universal low-energy formfactors obtained in the framework of the non-linear Luttinger liquid model. We find the reason why the simplified picture of the impurity moving in the Luttinger liquid leads to the correct results. We obtain the prefactors of the singularities including their $k$- dependence at small $k<<p_F$.
We consider a gauge/gravity dual model of thermalization which consists of a collapsing thin matter shell in asymptotically Anti-de Sitter space. A central aspect of our model is to consider a shell moving at finite velocity as determined by its equation of motion, rather than a quasi-static approximation as considered previously in the literature. By applying a divergence matching method, we obtain the evolution of singularities in the retarded unequal time correlator $G^R(t,t')$, which probes different stages of the thermalization. We find that the number of singularities decreases from a fi…
The stress tensor sector of a heavy-heavy-light-light scalar correlator in CFTs with a large central charge and a large gap is defined by the exchange of multi-stress tensor operators. The Regge limit of this correlator is determined by the phase shift of a highly energetic particle propagating in a dual black hole background. Assuming Einstein gravity in the bulk, the phase shift is known perturbatively to all orders in the ratio of the heavy scaling dimension over the central charge. In the CFT, the order counts the number of stress tensors in the multi-stress tensor operator. By Fourier tra…

Recent work has revealed intriguing connections between a Belinsky-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz-type analysis of spacelike singularities in General Relativity and certain infinite dimensional Lie algebras, and in particular the `maximally extended' hyperbolic Kac--Moody algebra E10. In this essay we argue that these results may lead to an entirely new understanding of the (quantum) nature of space(-time) at the Planck scale, and hence -- via an effective `de-emergence' of space near a singularity -- to a novel mechanism for achieving background independence in quantum gravity.
We obtain a basis of diagonal free field multi-matrix 2-point correlators in a theory with global symmetry group G. The operators fall into irreducible representations of G. This applies for gauge group U(N) at finite N. For composites made of n fundamental fields, this is expressed in terms of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients for the decomposition of the n-fold tensor products of the fundamental field representation in terms of G \times S_n representations. We use this general construction in the case of the SL(2) sector of \cN=4 SYM. In this case, by using oscillator constructions, we reduce the …
Within AdS/CFT, we establish a general procedure for obtaining the leading singularity of two-point correlators involving operator insertions at different times. The procedure obtained is applied to operators dual to a scalar field which satisfies Dirichlet boundary conditions on an arbitrary time-like surface in the bulk. We determine how the Dirichlet boundary conditions influence the singularity structure of the field theory correlation functions. New singularities appear at boundary points connected by null geodesics bouncing between the Dirichlet surface and the boundary. We propose that …

Using ``Tate's algorithm,'' we identify loci in the moduli of F-theory compactifications corresponding to enhanced gauge symmetry. We apply this to test the proposed F-theory/heterotic dualities in six dimensions. We recover the perturbative gauge symmetry enhancements of the heterotic side and the physics of small $SO(32)$ instantons, and discover new mixed perturbative/non-perturbative gauge symmetry enhancements. Upon further toroidal compactification to 4 dimensions, we derive the chain of Calabi-Yau threefolds dual to various Coulomb branches of heterotic strings.
We study the multifield inflationary models where the cosmological perturbation is sourced by light scalar fields other than the inflaton. We exploit the operator product expansion and partly the symmetries present during the de Sitter epoch to characterize the non-Gaussian four-point correlator in the squeezed limit. We point out that the contribution to it from the intrinsic non-Gaussianity of the light fields at horizon crossing can be larger than the usually studied contribution arising on superhorizon scales and it comes with a different shape. Our findings indicate that particular attent…
Scattering amplitudes at weak coupling are highly constrained by Lorentz invariance, locality and unitarity, and depend on model details only through coupling constants and particle content. In this paper, we develop an understanding of inflationary correlators which parallels that of flat-space scattering amplitudes. Specifically, we study slow-roll inflation with weak couplings to extra massive particles, for which all correlators are controlled by an approximate conformal symmetry on the boundary of the spacetime. After classifying all possible contact terms in de Sitter space, we derive an…
Based on a complete set of $J = 0$ and $J=1$ spatial isovector correlation functions calculated with $N_F = 2$ domain wall fermions we identify an intermediate temperature regime of $T \sim 220 - 500$ MeV ($1.2T_c$--$2.8T_c$), where chiral symmetry is restored but the correlators are not yet compatible with a simple free quark behavior. More specifically, in the temperature range $T \sim 220 - 500$ MeV we identify a multiplet structure of spatial correlators that suggests emergent $SU(2)_{CS}$ and $SU(4)$ symmetries, which are not symmetries of the free Dirac action. The symmetry breaking effe…
We discuss information loss from black hole physics in AdS$_3$, focusing on two sharp signatures infecting CFT$_2$ correlators at large central charge $c$: 'forbidden singularities' arising from Euclidean-time periodicity due to the effective Hawking temperature, and late-time exponential decay in the Lorentzian region. We study an infinite class of examples where forbidden singularities can be resolved by non-perturbative effects at finite $c$, and we show that the resolution has certain universal features that also apply in the general case. Analytically continuing to the Lorentzian regime, …
Energy Correlators measure the energy deposited in multiple detectors as a function of the angles between the detectors. In this paper, we analytically compute the three particle correlator in the collinear limit in QCD for quark and gluon jets, and also in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. We find an intriguing duality between the integrals for the energy correlators and infrared finite Feynman parameter integrals, which maps the angles of the correlators to dual momentum variables. In $\mathcal{N}=4$, we use this duality to express our result as a rational sum of simple Feynman integr…
We probe the contraction from $2d$ relativistic CFTs to theories with Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) symmetries, or equivalently Conformal Carroll symmetries, using diagnostics of quantum chaos. Starting from an Ultrarelativistic limit on a relativistic scalar field theory and following through at the quantum level using an oscillator representation of states, one can show the CFT$_2$ vacuum evolves smoothly into a BMS$_3$ vacuum in the form of a squeezed state. Computing circuit complexity of this transmutation using the covariance matrix approach shows clear divergences when the BMS point is hit …
In this paper we use conformal field theory techniques to constrain the form of the correlations functions of an inflationary scalar-vector model described by the interaction term $f_1(ϕ)F_{μν}F^{μν} + f_2(ϕ)\tilde{F}_{μν}F^{μν}$. We use the fact that the conformal group is the relevant symmetry group acting on super horizon scales in an inflationary de Sitter background. As a result, we find that super horizon conformal symmetry, constraints the form of the coupling functions $f_1, f_2$ to be homogeneous functions of the same degree. We derive the general form of the correlators involving sca…
We study local mirror symmetry on non-compact Calabi-Yau manifolds (conifold type of singularities) in the presence of D3 brane probes. Using an intermediate brane setup of NS 5-branes `probed' by D4 resp. D5 branes, we can explicitly T-dualize three isometry directions to relate a non-compact Calabi-Yau manifold to its local mirror. The intermediate brane setup is the one that is best suited to read off the gauge theory on the probe. Both intervals and boxes of NS 5-branes appear as brane setups. Going from one to the other is equivalent to performing a conifold transition in the dual geometr…
We extend the cosmological bootstrap to correlators involving massless particles with spin. In de Sitter space, these correlators are constrained both by symmetries and by locality. In particular, the de Sitter isometries become conformal symmetries on the future boundary of the spacetime, which are reflected in a set of Ward identities that the boundary correlators must satisfy. We solve these Ward identities by acting with weight-shifting operators on scalar seed solutions. Using this weight-shifting approach, we derive three- and four-point correlators of massless spin-1 and spin-2 fields w…
We study a simple class of correlators with two heavy and two light operators both in the D1D5 CFT and in the dual AdS$_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ description. On the CFT side we focus on the free orbifold point and discuss how these correlators decompose in terms of conformal blocks, showing that they are determined by protected quantities. On the gravity side, the heavy states are described by regular, asymptotically AdS$_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ solutions and the correlators are obtained by studying the wave equation in these backgrounds. We find that the CFT and the gravity results agree and…
We use the identification between null singularities of correlators in the bulk with time singularities in the boundary correlators to study the analytic structure of time-dependent thermal Green functions using the eikonal approximation for classical solutions in the AdS black hole background. We show that the location of singularities in complex time can be understood in terms of null rays bouncing on the boundaries and singularities of the eternal black hole, giving the picture of a `reflecting cavity'. We can then extract the general analytic expression for the asymptotic values of the fre…
The temperature of the chiral restoration phase transition at 130 MeV as well as the temperature of the center symmetry ("deconfinement") phase transition in a pure glue theory at 300 MeV are two independent temperatures and their interplay determines a structure of different regimes of hot QCD. Given a chiral spin symmetry of the color charge and of the chromoelectric interaction we can conclude from observed symmetries of spatial and temporal correlators of N_F=2 QCD with domain wall Dirac operator at physical quark masses that above the chiral symmetry restoration crossover around T_pc but …
To gain insight in the quantum nature of cosmological singularities, we study anisotropic Kasner solutions in gauge/gravity duality. The dual description of the bulk evolution towards the singularity involves N = 4 super Yang-Mills on the expanding branch of deformed de Sitter space and is well defined. We compute two-point correlators of Yang-Mills operators of large dimensions using spacelike geodesics anchored on the boundary. The correlators show a strong signature of the singularity around horizon scales and decay at large boundary separation at different rates in different directions. Mo…
The space of inflationary models is vast, containing wide varieties of mechanisms, symmetries, and spectra of particles. Consequently, the space of observational signatures is similarly complex. Hence, it is natural to look for boundaries of the space of models and their signatures. In this paper, we explore the possible symmetries associated with the primordial cosmological perturbations and their correlators in the asymptotic future. Assuming the observed homogeneity, isotropy and (approximate) scale invariance, we prove three main results. First, correlation functions of scalar metric fluct…
Half BPS correlators in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory are key quantities both in the AdS/CFT correspondence as well as in scattering amplitudes research. They are dual at strong coupling to quantum gravity amplitudes. At weak coupling on the other hand they contain all N=4 SYM amplitudes. They have been found to possess a number of hidden symmetries, for example non-trivial permutation symmetry of perturbative four-point integrands and a higher dimensional conformal symmetry. Their study has enjoyed continuous progress since the discovery of AdS/CFT and they are now some of the best understood q…

Parameter-space and function-space provide two different duality frames in which to study neural networks. We demonstrate that symmetries of network densities may be determined via dual computations of network correlation functions, even when the density is unknown and the network is not equivariant. Symmetry-via-duality relies on invariance properties of the correlation functions, which stem from the choice of network parameter distributions. Input and output symmetries of neural network densities are determined, which recover known Gaussian process results in the infinite width limit. The me…
We study codimension-two BPS defects in 2d N=(2,2) supersymmetric gauge theories, focusing especially on those characterized by vortex-like singularities in the dynamical or non-dynamical gauge field. We classify possible SUSY-preserving boundary conditions on charged matter fields around the vortex defects, and derive a formula for defect correlators on the squashed sphere. We also prove an equivalence relation between vortex defects and 0d-2d coupled systems. Our defect correlators are shown to be consistent with the mirror symmetry duality between Abelian gauged linear sigma models and Land…
All correlation functions of conserved currents of the CFT that is dual to unbroken Vasiliev theory are found as invariants of higher-spin symmetry in the bulk of AdS. The conformal and higher-spin symmetry of the correlators as well as the conservation of currents are manifest, which also provides a direct link between the Maldacena-Zhiboedov result and higher-spin symmetries. Our method is in the spirit of AdS/CFT, though we never take any boundary limit or compute any bulk integrals. Boundary-to-bulk propagators are shown to exhibit an algebraic structure, living at the boundary of SpH(4), …
We consider the D1-D5 CFT near the orbifold point, specifically the computation of correlators involving twist sector fields using covering surface techniques. As is well known, certain twists introduce spin fields on the cover. Here we consider the bosonization of fermions to facilitate computations involving the spin fields. We find a set of cocycle operators that satisfy constraints coming from various $SU(2)$ symmetries, including the $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ R-symmetry. Using these cocycles, we consider the correlator of four spin fields on the cover, and show that it is invariant under al…
The classical gravity approximation is often employed in AdS/CFT to study the dual field theory, as it allows for many computations. A drawback is however the generic presence of singularities in classical gravity, which limits the applicability of AdS/CFT to regimes where the singularities are avoided by bulk probes, or some other form of regularisation is applicable. At the same time, quantum gravity is expected to resolve those singularities and thus to extend the range of applicability of AdS/CFT also in classically singular regimes. This paper exemplifies such a computation. We use an eff…
We derive soft theorems for theories in which time symmetries -- symmetries that involve the transformation of time, an example of which are Lorentz boosts -- are spontaneously broken. The soft theorems involve unequal-time correlation functions with the insertion of a soft Goldstone in the far past. Explicit checks are provided for several examples, including the effective theory of a relativistic superfluid and the effective field theory of inflation. We discuss how in certain cases these unequal-time identities capture information at the level of observables that cannot be seen purely in te…
The observation of primordial correlators by cosmological surveys is a very promising avenue to probe high energies and the perturbative regime of quantum gravity. Hence, it is imperative that we understand how these observables are shaped by the pillars of fundamental physics, namely unitarity, locality and symmetries. To this end, we study the three-point correlators of gravitons and scalar curvature perturbations around a quasi de Sitter spacetime. We identify a set of Bootstrap Rules that fully fix the form of these correlators in the asymptotic future, i.e. at the boundary, and make no re…
We show that the geometry of K3 surfaces with singularities of type A-D-E contains enough information to reconstruct a copy of the Lie algebra associated to the given Dynkin diagram. We apply this construction to explain the enhancement of symmetry in F and IIA theories compactified on singular K3's.
A common strategy to investigate the fate of gravitational singularities in asymptotically AdS spacetimes is to translate the question from the gravitational side to a dual field theory using the gauge/gravity correspondence and to do a field theory computation. Given recent progress in singularity resolution via non-perturbative quantum gravity, it is natural to now turn the question around and to ask about field theory signatures of resolved singularities. An investigation along this line has been initiated in a companion paper, where a finite-distance pole exhibited by the two-point correla…
We determine all the correlators of the H3+ model on a disc with AdS2-brane boundary conditions in terms of correlators of Liouville theory on a disc with FZZT-brane boundary conditions. We argue that the Cardy-Lewellen constraints are weaker in the H3+ model than in rational conformal field theories due to extra singularities of the correlators, but strong enough to uniquely determine the bulk two-point function on a disc. We confirm our results by detailed analyses of the bulk-boundary two-point function and of the boundary two-point function. In particular we find that, although the target …
We review the intimate connection between (super-)gravity close to a spacelike singularity (the "BKL-limit") and the theory of Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebras. We show that in this limit the gravitational theory can be reformulated in terms of billiard motion in a region of hyperbolic space, revealing that the dynamics is completely determined by a (possibly infinite) sequence of reflections, which are elements of a Lorentzian Coxeter group. Such Coxeter groups are the Weyl groups of infinite-dimensional Kac-Moody algebras, suggesting that these algebras yield symmetries of gravitational theorie…
We consider the simplest possible setting of non abelian twist fields which corresponds to $SU(2)$ monodromies. We first review the theory of hypergeometric function and of the solutions of the most general Fuchsian second order equation with three singularities. Then we solve the problem of writing the general solution with prescribed $U(2)$ monodromies. We use this result to compute the classical string solution corresponding to three $D2$ branes in $R^4$. Despite the fact the configuration is supersymmetric the classical string solution is not holomorphic. Using the equation of motion and n…
The matrix model formulation of two dimensional string theory has been shown to admit time dependent classical solutions whose closed string duals are geodesically incomplete space-times with space-like boundaries. We investigate some aspects of the dynamics of fermions in one such background. We show that even though the background solution appears pathological, the time evolution of the system is smooth in terms of open string degrees of freedom, viz. the fermions. In particular, an initial state of fermions evolves smoothly into a well defined final state over an infinite open string time i…
