We use the identification between null singularities of correlators in the bulk with time singularities in the boundary correlators to study the analytic structure of time-dependent thermal Green functions using the eikonal approximation for classical solutions in the AdS black hole background. We show that the location of singularities in complex time can be understood in terms of null rays bouncing on the boundaries and singularities of the eternal black hole, giving the picture of a `reflecting cavity'. We can then extract the general analytic expression for the asymptotic values of the frequencies of quasinormal modes in large AdS black holes.
We study condensation behaviors of static scalar fields in the regular asymptotically AdS reflecting star spacetime. With analytical methods, we provide upper bounds for the radii of the scalar hairy reflecting stars. Above the bound, there is no scalar hair theorem for the star. Below the bound, we numerically obtain charged scalar hairy reflecting star solutions and in particular, the radii of the hairy stars are discrete, which is similar to known results in other reflecting object backgrounds. For every set of parameters, we search for the largest AdS hairy star radius, study effects of pa…
We study scalar condensations around asymptotically Anti-de Sitter(AdS) regular reflecting shells. We show that the charged scalar field can condense around charged reflecting shells with both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. In particular, the radii of the asymptotically AdS hairy shells are discrete, which is similar to cases in asymptotically flat spacetimes. We also provide upper bounds for the radii of the hairy Dirichlet reflecting shells and above the bound, the scalar field cannot condense around the shell.
Large black holes in an asymptotically AdS spacetime have a dual description in terms of approximately thermal states in the boundary CFT. The reflecting boundary conditions of AdS prevent such black holes from evaporating completely. On the other hand, the formulation of the information paradox becomes more stringent when a black hole is allowed to evaporate. In order to address the information loss problem from the AdS/CFT perspective we then need the boundary to become partially absorptive. We present a simple model that produces the necessary changes on the boundary by coupling a bulk scal…
Recently, studies of the gravitational collapse of a scalar field within spherically symmetric AdS spacetimes was presented in \cite{Bizon:2011gg,Jalmuzna:2011qw} which showed an instability of pure AdS to black hole formation. In particular, the work showed that arbitrarily small initial configurations of scalar field evolved through some number of reflections off the AdS boundary until a black hole forms. We consider this same system, extended to include a complex scalar field, and reproduce this phenomena. We present tests of our numerical code that demonstrate convergence and consistency. …
In this paper, a detailed analysis for superradiant stability of the system composed by a $D$-dimensional Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black hole and a reflecting mirror under charged scalar perturbations are presented in the linear regime. It is found that the stability of the system is heavily affected by the mirror radius as well as the mass of the scalar perturbation, AdS radius and the dimension of space-time. In a higher dimensional space-time, the degree of instability of the superradiant modes will be severely weakened. Nevertheless, the degree of instability can be magni…
We study the worldsheet reflection matrix of a string attached to a D-brane in $AdS_5 \times S^5$. The D-brane corresponds to a maximal giant graviton and it wraps an $S^3$ inside $S^5$. In the gauge theory, the open string is described by a spin chain with boundaries. We study an open string with a large SO(6) charge, which allows us to focus on one boundary at a time and to define an asymptotic boundary reflection matrix. We consider two cases corresponding to two possible relative orientations for the charges of the giant graviton and the open string. Using the symmetries of the problem we …
We consider a system consisting of an atom in the approximation of a harmonic oscillator of frequency $\barω$, coupled to the scalar potential inside a spherical reflecting cavity of radius R. We use {\it dressed} states introduced in a previous publication [Andion, Malbouisson and Matos Neto, J. Phys. A34, 3735 (2001)], which allow a non-perturbative unified description of the atom radiation process, in both cases, of a finite or an arbitrarily large cavity. We perform a study of the energy distribution in a small cavity, with the initial condition that the atom is in the first excited state …
In this thesis we discuss how one can derive the quantum spectral curve for the $η$-deformed AdS$_5 \times S^5$ superstring, an integrable deformation of the AdS$_5 \times $S$^5$ superstring with quantum group symmetry. This model can be viewed as a trigonometric version of the AdS$_5 \times $S$^5$ superstring, like the Heisenberg xxz spin chain is a trigonometric version of the xxx spin chain. Our derivation starts from the ground-state thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations and discusses the construction of both the undeformed and the $η$-deformed quantum spectral curve. We reformulate it firs…
In this paper we discuss the blackhole-string transition of the small Schwarzschild blackhole of $AdS_5 \times S^5$ using the AdS/CFT correspondence at finite temperature. The finite temperature gauge theory effective action, at weak {\it and} strong coupling, can be expressed entirely in terms of constant Polyakov lines which are $SU (N)$ matrices. In showing this we have taken into account that there are no Nambu-Goldstone modes associated with the fact that the 10 dimensional blackhole solution sits at a point in $S^5$. We show that the phase of the gauge theory in which the eigenvalue spec…
The spectral problem for the ${\rm AdS}_5\times {\rm S}^5$ superstring and its dual planar maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory can be efficiently solved through a set of functional equations known as the quantum spectral curve. We discuss how the same concepts apply to the $η$-deformed ${\rm AdS}_5\times {\rm S}^5$ superstring, an integrable deformation of the ${\rm AdS}_5\times {\rm S}^5$ superstring with quantum group symmetry. This model can be viewed as a trigonometric version of the ${\rm AdS}_5\times {\rm S}^5$ superstring, like the relation between the XXZ and XXX spin chains, or…
Surface operators in the 6d (2,0) theory at large $N$ have a holographic description in terms of M2 branes probing the AdS$_7 \times S^4$ M-theory background. The most symmetric, 1/2-BPS, operator is defined over a planar or spherical surface, and it preserves a 2d superconformal group. This includes, in particular, an $SO(2,2)$ subgroup of 2d conformal transformations, so that the surface operator may be viewed as a conformal defect in the 6d theory. The dual M2 brane has an AdS$_3$ induced geometry, reflecting the 2d conformal symmetry. Here we use the holographic description to extract the …
This work resolves a longstanding tension between the physically-expected stability of the microcanonical ensemble for gravitating systems and the fact that the known negative mode of the asymptotically flat Schwarzschild black hole decays too rapidly at infinity to affect the ADM energy boundary term at infinity. The key to our study is that we fix an appropriate {\it off-shell} notion of energy, which we obtain by constructing the microcanonical partition function as an integral transform of the canonical partition function. After applying the rule-of-thumb for Wick rotations from our recent…
The purpose of this paper is to show an unexpected connection between Diophantine approximation and the behavior of waves on black hole interiors with negative cosmological constant $Λ<0$ and explore the consequences of this for the Strong Cosmic Censorship conjecture in general relativity. We study linear scalar perturbations $ψ$ of Kerr-AdS solving $\Box_gψ-\frac{2}{3}Λψ=0$ with reflecting boundary conditions at infinity. Understanding the behavior of $ψ$ at the Cauchy horizon corresponds to a linear analog of the problem of Strong Cosmic Censorship. Our main result shows that if the dimensi…
We revisit the stability of black hole saddles for the Euclidean path integral describing the canonical partition function $Z(β)$ for gravity inside a spherical reflecting cavity. The boundary condition at the cavity wall couples the transverse-traceless (TT) and pure-trace modes that are traditionally used to describe fluctuations about Euclidean Schwarzschild black holes in infinite-volume asymptotically flat and asymototically AdS spacetimes. This coupling obstructs the familiar Gibbons-Hawking-Perry treatment of the conformal factor problem, as Wick rotation of the pure-trace modes would r…

We describe the full nonlinear development of the superradiant instability for a charged massless scalar field, coupled to general relativity and electromagnetism, in the vicinity of a Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black hole. The presence of the negative cosmological constant provides a natural context for considering perfectly reflecting boundary conditions and studying the dynamics as the scalar field interacts repeatedly with the black hole. At early times, small superradiant perturbations grow as expected from linearized studies. Backreaction then causes the black hole to lose charge and mass un…

We show that the meromorphic Jacobi form that counts the quarter-BPS states in N=4 string theories can be canonically decomposed as a sum of a mock Jacobi form and an Appell-Lerch sum. The quantum degeneracies of single-centered black holes are Fourier coefficients of this mock Jacobi form, while the Appell-Lerch sum captures the degeneracies of multi-centered black holes which decay upon wall-crossing. The completion of the mock Jacobi form restores the modular symmetries expected from $AdS_3/CFT_2$ holography but has a holomorphic anomaly reflecting the non-compactness of the microscopic CFT…
