Suppose that $\{u(t\,, x)\}_{t >0, x \in\mathbb{R}^d}$ is the solution to a $d$-dimensional stochastic heat equation driven by a Gaussian noise that is white in time and has a spatially homogeneous covariance that satisfies Dalang's condition. The purpose of this paper is to establish quantitative central limit theorems for spatial averages of the form $N^{-d} \int_{[0,N]^d} g(u(t\,,x))\, \mathrm{d} x$, as $N\rightarrow\infty$, where $g$ is a Lipschitz-continuous function or belongs to a class of locally-Lipschitz functions, using a combination of the Malliavin calculus and Stein's method for normal approximations. Our results include a central limit theorem for the {\it Hopf-Cole} solution to KPZ equation. We also establish a functional central limit theorem for these spatial averages.
Initiated around the year 2007, the Malliavin-Stein approach to probabilistic approximations combines Stein's method with infinite-dimensional integration by parts formulae based on the use of Malliavin-type operators. In the last decade, Malliavin-Stein techniques have allowed researchers to establish new quantitative limit theorems in a variety of domains of theoretical and applied stochastic analysis. The aim of this survey is to illustrate some of the latest developments of the Malliavin-Stein method, with specific emphasis on extensions and generalisations in the framework of Markov semig…
In this paper, we give an upper bound for a probabilistic distance between a Gaussian vector and a vector of U-statistics of Poisson point processes by applying Malliavin-Stein inequality on the Poisson space.
The fourth moment theorem provides error bounds of the order $\sqrt{{\mathbb E}(F^4) - 3}$ in the central limit theorem for elements $F$ of Wiener chaos of any order such that ${\mathbb E}(F^2) = 1$. It was proved by Nourdin and Peccati (2009) using Stein's method and the Malliavin calculus. It was also proved by Azmoodeh, Campese and Poly (2014) using Stein's method and Dirichlet forms. This paper is an exposition on the connections between Stein's method and the Malliavin calculus and between Stein's method and Dirichlet forms, and on how these connections are exploited in proving the fourth…
The Stein's method is a popular method used to derive upper-bounds of distances between probability distributions. It can be viewed, in certain of its formulations, as an avatar of the semi-group or of the smart-path method used commonly in Gaussian analysis. We show how this procedure can be enriched by Malliavin calculus leading to a functional approach valid in infinite dimensional spaces.
In this paper, following Nourdin-Peccati's methodology, we combine the Malliavin calculus and Stein's method to provide general bounds on the Wasserstein distance between functionals of a compound Hawkes process and a given Gaussian density. To achieve this, we rely on the Poisson embedding representation of an Hawkes process to provide a Malliavin calculus for the Hawkes processes, and more generally for compound Hawkes processes. As an application, we close a gap in the literature by providing the first Berry-Esséen bounds associated to Central Limit Theorems for the compound Hawkes process.
Given a random variable $F$ regular enough in the sense of the Malliavin calculus, we are able to measure the distance between its law and almost any continuous probability law on the real line. The bounds are given in terms of the Malliavin derivative of $F$. Our approach is based on the theory of Itô diffusions and the stochastic calculus of variations. Several examples are considered in order to illustrate our general results.
In this paper, we provide upper bounds on the d2 distance between a large class of functionals of a multivariate compound Hawkes process and a given Gaussian vector. This is proven using Malliavin's calculus defined on an underlying Poisson embedding. The upper bound is then used to infer the speed of convergence of Central Limit Theorems for the multivariate compound Hawkes process with exponential kernels as the observation time T goes to infinity.
We combine Stein's method with Malliavin calculus in order to obtain explicit bounds in the multidimensional normal approximation (in the Wasserstein distance) of functionals of Gaussian fields. Our results generalize and refine the main findings by Peccati and Tudor (2005), Nualart and Ortiz-Latorre (2007), Peccati (2007) and Nourdin and Peccati (2007b, 2008); in particular, they apply to approximations by means of Gaussian vectors with an arbitrary, positive definite covariance matrix. Among several examples, we provide an application to a functional version of the Breuer-Major CLT for field…
New bounds on the total variation distance between the law of integer valued functionals of possibly non-symmetric and non-homogeneous infinite Rademacher sequences and the Poisson distribution are established. They are based on a combination of the Chen-Stein method and a discrete version of Malliavin calculus. We give some applications to shifted discrete multiple stochastic integrals.
We combine Malliavin calculus with Stein's method to derive bounds for the Variance-Gamma approximation of functionals of isonormal Gaussian processes, in particular of random variables living inside a fixed Wiener chaos induced by such a process. The bounds are presented in terms of Malliavin operators and norms of contractions. We show that a sequence of distributions of random variables in the second Wiener chaos converges to a Variance-Gamma distribution if and only if their moments of order two to six converge to that of a Variance-Gamma distributed random variable (six moment theorem). M…
We provide an overview of some recent techniques involving the Malliavin calculus of variations and the so-called ``Stein's method'' for the Gaussian approximations of probability distributions. Special attention is devoted to establishing explicit connections with the classic method of moments: in particular, we use interpolation techniques in order to deduce some new estimates for the moments of random variables belonging to a fixed Wiener chaos. As an illustration, a class of central limit theorems associated with the quadratic variation of a fractional Brownian motion is studied in detail.
Stein's method is a method of probability approximation which hinges on the solution of a functional equation. For normal approximation the functional equation is a first order differential equation. Malliavin calculus is an infinite-dimensional differential calculus whose operators act on functionals of general Gaussian processes. Nourdin and Peccati (2009) established a fundamental connection between Stein's method for normal approximation and Malliavin calculus through integration by parts. This connection is exploited to obtain error bounds in total variation in central limit theorems for …
We investigate Stein-Malliavin approximations for nonlinear functionals of geometric interest of Gaussian random eigenfunctions on the unit $d$ -dimensional sphere ${\mathbb{S}}^{d},$ $d\geq 2.$ All our results are established in the high energy limit, i.e. for eigenfunctions corresponding to growing eigenvalues. More precisely, we provide an asymptotic analysis for the variance of random eigenfunctions, and also establish rates of convergence for various probability metrics for Hermite subordinated processes, arbitrary polynomials of finite order and square integral nonlinear transforms; the …
A new Berry-Esseen bound for non-linear functionals of non-symmetric and non-homogeneous infinite Rademacher sequences is established. It is based on a discrete version of the Malliavin-Stein method and an analysis of the discrete Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup. The result is applied to sub-graph counts and to the number of vertices having a prescribed degree in the Erdős-Renyi random graph. A further application deals with a percolation problem on trees.
Following a strategy recently developed by Ivan Nourdin and Giovanni Peccati, we provide a general technique to compare the tail of a given random variable to that of a reference distribution. This enables us to give concrete conditions to ensure upper and/or lower bounds on the random variable's tail of various power or exponential types. The Nourdin-Peccati strategy analyzes the relation between Stein's method and the Malliavin calculus, and is adapted to dealing with comparisons to the Gaussian law. By studying the behavior of the solution to general Stein equations in detail, we show that …
On any denumerable product of probability spaces, we construct a Malliavin gradient and then a divergence and a number operator. This yields a Dirichlet structure which can be shown to approach the usual structures for Poisson and Brownian processes. We obtain versions of almost all the classical functional inequalities in discrete settings which show that the Efron-Stein inequality can be interpreted as a Poincar{é} inequality or that Hoeffding decomposition of U-statistics can be interpreted as a chaos decomposition. We obtain a version of the Lyapounov central limit theorem for independent …
In a seminal paper of 2005, Nualart and Peccati discovered a surprising central limit theorem (called the "Fourth Moment Theorem" in the sequel) for sequences of multiple stochastic integrals of a fixed order: in this context, convergence in distribution to the standard normal law is equivalent to convergence of just the fourth moment. Shortly afterwards, Peccati and Tudor gave a multidimensional version of this characterization. Since the publication of these two beautiful papers, many improvements and developments on this theme have been considered. Among them is the work by Nualart and Orti…
We combine the notion of free Stein kernel and the free Malliavin calculus to provide quantitative bounds under the free (quadratic) Wasserstein distance in the multivariate semicircular approximations for self-adjoint vector-valued multiple Wigner integrals. On the way, we deduce an HSI inequality for a modified non-microstates free entropy with respect to the potential associated with these semicircular families in the case of non-degeneracy of the covariance matrix. The strategy of the proofs is based on functional inequalities involving the free Stein discrepancy. We obtain a bound which d…
In this paper we establish a framework for normal approximation for white noise functionals by Stein's method and Hida calculus. Our work is inspired by that of Nourdin and Peccati (Probab. Theory Relat. Fields 145, 75-118, 2009), who combined Stein's method and Malliavin calculus for normal approximation for functionals of Gaussian processes.
We consider a random variable X satisfying almost-sure conditions involving G:=<DX,-DL^{-1}X> where DX is X's Malliavin derivative and L^{-1} is the inverse Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator. A lower- (resp. upper-) bound condition on G is proved to imply a Gaussian-type lower (resp. upper) bound on the tail P[X>z]. Bounds of other natures are also given. A key ingredient is the use of Stein's lemma, including the explicit form of the solution of Stein's equation relative to the function 1_{x>z}, and its relation to G. Another set of comparable results is established, without the use of Stein's lemm…
We combine Stein's method with a version of Malliavin calculus on the Poisson space. As a result, we obtain explicit Berry-Esséen bounds in Central Limit Theorems (CLTs) involving multiple Wiener-Itô integrals with respect to a general Poisson measure. We provide several applications to CLTs related to Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Lévy processes.
We develop the asymptotic expansion theory for vector-valued sequences (F N) N $\ge$1 of random variables in terms of the convergence of the Stein-Malliavin matrix associated to the sequence F N. Our approach combines the classical Fourier approach and the recent theory on Stein method and Malliavin calculus. We find the second order term of the asymptotic expansion of the density of F N and we illustrate our results by several examples. 2010 AMS Classification Numbers: 62M09, 60F05, 62H12
We obtain Stein approximation bounds for stochastic integrals with respect to a Poisson random measure over ${\Bbb R}^d$, $d\geq 2$. This approach relies on third cumulant Edgeworth-type expansions based on derivation operators defined by the Malliavin calculus for Poisson random measures. The use of third cumulants can exhibit faster convergence rates than the standard Berry-Esseen rate for some sequences of Poisson stochastic integrals.
In this article, we give some existence and smoothness results for the law of the solution to a stochastic heat equation driven by a finite dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H>1/2$. Our results rely on recent tools of Young integration for convolutional integrals combined with stochastic analysis methods for the study of laws of random variables defined on a Wiener space.
In [14], Nourdin and Peccati combined the Malliavin calculus and Stein's method of normal approximation to associate a rate of convergence to the celebrated fourth moment theorem [19] of Nualart and Peccati. Their analysis, known as the Malliavin-Stein method nowadays, has found many applications towards stochastic geometry, statistical physics and zeros of random polynomials, to name a few. In this article, we further explore the relation between these two fields of mathematics. In particular, we construct exchangeable pairs of Brownian motions and we discover a natural link between Malliavin…
Stein's method has been widely used for probability approximations. However, in the multi-dimensional setting, most of the results are for multivariate normal approximation or for test functions with bounded second- or higher-order derivatives. For a class of multivariate limiting distributions, we use Bismut's formula in Malliavin calculus to control the derivatives of the Stein equation solutions by the first derivative of the test function. Combined with Stein's exchangeable pair approach, we obtain a general theorem for multivariate approximations with near optimal error bounds on the Wass…
In this article, we consider a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) driven by a Lévy white noise, with Lipschitz multiplicative term $σ$. We prove that under some conditions, this equation has a unique random field solution. These conditions are verified by the stochastic heat and wave equations. We introduce the basic elements of Malliavin calculus with respect to the compensated Poisson random measure associated with the Lévy white noise. If $σ$ is affine, we prove that the solution is Malliavin differentiable and its Malliavin derivative satisfies a stochastic integral equation.
In this paper we prove an estimate for the total variation distance, in the framework of the Breuer-Major theorem, using the Malliavin-Stein method, assuming the underlying function $g$ to be once weakly differentiable with $g$ and $g'$ having finite moments of order four with respect to the standard Gaussian density. This result is proved by a combination of Gebelein's inequality and some novel estimates involving Malliavin operators.
We establish a general inequality on the Poisson space, yielding an upper bound for the distance in total variation between the law of a regular random variable with values in the integers and a Poisson distribution. Several applications are provided, in particular: (i) to deduce a set of sufficient conditions implying that a sequence of (suitably shifted) multiple Wiener-Itô integrals converges in distribution to a Poisson random variable, and (ii) to compute explicit rates of convergence for the Poisson approximation of statistics associated with geometric random graphs with sparse connectio…
We compute explicit bounds in the Gaussian approximation of functionals of infinite Rademacher sequences. Our tools involve Stein's method, as well as the use of appropriate discrete Malliavin operators. Although our approach does not require the classical use of exchangeable pairs, we employ a chaos expansion in order to construct an explicit exchangeable pair vector for any random variable which depends on a finite set of Rademacher variables. Among several examples, which include random variables which depend on infinitely many Rademacher variables, we provide three main applications: (i) t…
In this paper, we consider the one-dimensional stochastic heat equation driven by a space time white noise. In two different scenarios: {\it (i)} initial condition $u_0=1$ and general nonlinear coefficient $σ$ and {\it (ii)}: initial condition $u_0=δ_0$ and $σ(x)=x$ (Parabolic Anderson Model), we establish rates of convergence for the uniform distance between the density of (renormalized) spatial averages and the standard normal density. These results are based on the combination of Stein method for normal approximations and Malliavin calculus techniques. A key ingredient in Case (i) is a new …
We consider functionals which are weighted averages of the avoidance function of a Poisson process. Using the approach to Stein's method based on Malliavin calculus for Poisson functionals we provide explicit bounds for the Wasserstein distance between these standardized functionals and the standard normal distribution. Our approach relies on closed-form expressions for the action of some Malliavin type operators on avoidance functionals of Poisson processes. As a result we provide Berry-Esseen bounds in the CLT for the volume of the union of balls of a fixed radius around random Poisson cente…
We analyze the generalized $k$-variations for the solution to the wave equation driven by an additive Gaussian noise which behaves as a fractional Brownian with Hurst parameter $H>\frac{1}{2}$ in time and which is white in space. The $k$-variations are defined along {\it filters} of any order $p\geq 1$ and of any length. We show that the sequence of generalized $k$-variation satisfies a Central Limit Theorem when $p> H+\frac{1}{4}$ and we estimate the rate of convergence for it via the Stein-Malliavin calculus. The results are applied to the estimation of the Hurst index. We construct several …
We establish a sharp estimate on the negative moments of the smallest eigenvalue of the Malliavin matrix $γ_Z$ of $Z := (u(s, y), u(t, x) - u(s, y))$, where $u$ is the solution to system of $d$ non-linear stochastic heat equations in spatial dimension $k \geq 1$. We also obtain the optimal exponents for the $L^p$-modulus of continuity of the increments of the solution and of its Malliavin derivatives. These lead to optimal lower bounds on hitting probabilities of the process $\{u(t, x): (t, x) \in [0, \infty[ \times \mathbb{R}\}$ in the non-Gaussian case in terms of Newtonian capacity, and imp…
In this paper, we present a rate of convergence in the uniform norm for the densities of spatial averages of the solution to the d-dimensional parabolic Anderson model driven by a Gaussian multiplicative noise, which is white in time and has a spatial covariance given by the Riesz kernel. The proof is based on the combination of Malliavin calculus techniques and the Stein's method for normal approximations.
The aim of this paper is to control the rate of convergence for central limit theorems of sojourn times of Gaussian fields in both cases: the fixed and the moving level. Our main tools are the Malliavin calculus and the Stein's method, developed by Nualart, Peccati and Nourdin. We also extend some results of Berman to the multidimensional case.
We study the smoothness of the density of a semilinear heat equation with multiplicative spacetime white noise. Using Malliavin calculus, we reduce the problem to a question of negative moments of solutions of a linear heat equation with multiplicative white noise. Then we settle this question by proving that solutions to the linear equation have negative moments of all orders.
We obtain a new probabilistic representation for the solution of the heat equation in terms of a product for smooth random variables which is introduced and studied in this paper. This multiplication, expressed in terms of the Hida-Malliavin derivatives of the random variables involved, exhibits many useful properties which are to some extents opposite to some peculiar features of the Wick product.
In this paper, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence and regularity of the density of the solution to a semilinear stochastic (fractional) heat equation with measure-valued initial conditions. Under a mild cone condition for the diffusion coefficient, we establish the smooth joint density at multiple points. The tool we use is Malliavin calculus. The main ingredient is to prove that the solutions to a related stochastic partial differential equation have negative moments of all orders. Because we cannot prove $u(t,x)\in \mathbb{D}^\infty$ for measure-valued initia…
We study the smoothness of the density of the solution to the nonlinear heat equation u_t=Lu(t,x)+σ(u(t,x))W on a torus with a periodic boundary condition, where L is the generator of a Levy process on the torus, and W is white noise. We use Malliavin calculus techniques to show that the law of the solution has a density with respect to the Lebesgue measure for all t >0 and x in R.
Berry-Esseen bounds for non-linear functionals of infinite Rademacher sequences are derived by means of the Malliavin-Stein method. Moreover, multivariate extensions for vectors of Rademacher functionals are shown. The results establish a connection to small-ball probabilities and shed new light onto the relation between central limit theorems on the Rademacher chaos and norms of contraction operators. Applications concern infinite weighted 2-runs, a combinatorial central limit theorem and traces of Bernoulli random matrices.

In this work, we study the normal approximation and almost sure central limit theorems for some functionals of an independent sequence of Rademacher random variables. In particular, we provide a new chain rule that improves the one derived by Nourdin, Peccati and Reinert(2010) and then we deduce the bound on Wasserstein distance for normal approximation using the (discrete) Malliavin-Stein approach. Besides, we are able to give the almost sure central limit theorem for a sequence of random variables inside a fixed Rademacher chaos using the Ibragimov-Lifshits criterion.
In this paper, we establish a version of the Feynman-Kac formula for multidimensional stochastic heat equation driven by a general semimartingale. This Feynman-Kac formula is then applied to study some nonlinear stochastic heat equations driven by nonhomogenous Gaussian noise: First, it is obtained an explicit expression for the Malliavin derivatives of the solutions. Based on the representation we obtain the smooth property of the density of the law of the solution. On the other hand, we also obtain the Hölder continuity of the solutions.
Using Stein's method and the Malliavin calculus of variations, we derive explicit estimates for the Gamma approximation of functionals of a Poisson measure. In particular, conditions are presented under which the distribution of a sequence of multiple Wiener-Ito stochastic integrals with respect to a compensated Poisson measure converges to a Gamma distribution. As an illustration, we present a quantitative version and a non-central extension of a classical theorem by de Jong in the case of degenerate U-statistics of order two. Several multidimensional extensions, in particular allowing for mi…
