We provide a new foundation for combinatorial commutative algebra and Stanley-Reisner theory using the partition complex introduced in [Adi18]. One of the main advantages is that it is entirely self-contained, using only a minimal knowledge of algebra and topology. On the other hand, we also develop new techniques and results using this approach. In particular, we provide
- A novel, self-contained method of establishing Reisner's theorem and Schenzel's formula for Buchsbaum complexes.
- A simple new way to establish Poincaré duality for face rings of manifolds, in much greater generality and precision than previous treatments.
- A "master-theorem" to generalize several previous results concerning the Lefschetz theorem on subdivisions.
- Proof for a conjecture of Kühnel concerning triangulated manifolds with boundary.
We apply down operators in the affine nilCoxeter algebra to yield explicit combinatorial expansions for certain families of non-commutative k-Schur functions. This yields a combinatorial interpretation for a new family of k-Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.
We introduce the notion of a combinatorial inverse system in non-commutative variables. We present two important examples, some conjectures and results. These conjectures and results were suggested and supported by computer investigations.
We propose several constructions of commutative or cocommutative Hopf algebras based on various combinatorial structures, and investigate the relations between them. A commutative Hopf algebra of permutations is obtained by a general construction based on graphs, and its non-commutative dual is realized in three different ways, in particular as the Grossman-Larson algebra of heap ordered trees. Extensions to endofunctions, parking functions, set compositions, set partitions, planar binary trees and rooted forests are discussed. Finally, we introduce one-parameter families interpolating between…
A non-commutative, planar, Hopf algebra of rooted trees was proposed in L. Foissy, Bull. Sci. Math. 126 (2002) 193-239. In this paper we propose such a non-commutative Hopf algebra for graphs. In order to define a non-commutative product we use a quantum field theoretical (QFT) idea, namely the one of introducing discrete scales on each edge of the graph (which, within the QFT framework, corresponds to energy scales of the associated propagators).
In this paper, we introduce a notion of quantum discrepancy, a non-commutative version of combinatorial discrepancy which is defined for projection systems, i.e. finite sets of orthogonal projections, as non-commutative counterparts of set systems. We show that besides its natural algebraic formulation, quantum discrepancy, when restricted to set systems, has a probabilistic interpretation in terms of determinantal processes. Determinantal processes are a family of point processes with a rich algebraic structure. A common feature of this family is the local repulsive behavior of points. Alisha…
We give a proof of a recent combinatorial conjecture due to the first author, which was discovered in the framework of commutative algebra. This result gives rise to new companions to the famous Andrews-Gordon identities. Our tools involve graded quotient rings, Durfee squares and rectangles for integer partitions, and $q$-series identities.

For a given graph $G$, we construct an associated commutative algebra, whose dimension is equal to the number of $t$-labeled forests of $G$. We show that the dimension of the $k$-th graded component of this algebra also has a combinatorial meaning and that its Hilbert polynomial can be expressed through the Tutte polynomial of $G$.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with unity and $Z(R)$ and ${\rm Reg}(R)$ be the set of zero-divisors and non-zero zero-divisors of $R$, respectively. We denote by $T(Γ(R))$, the total graph of $R$, a simple graph with the vertex set $R$ and two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if and only if $x+y\in Z(R)$. The induced subgraphs on $Z(R)$ and ${\rm Reg}(R)$ are denoted by $Z(Γ(R))$ and $Reg(Γ(R))$, respectively. These graphs were first introduced by D.F. Anderson and A. Badawi in 2008. In this paper, we prove the following result: let $R$ be a finite ring and one of the following condit…
We give a constructive proof, to all orders, that each member of the non-commutative potential Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy is a Fredholm Grassmannian flow and is therefore linearisable. Indeed we prove this for any linear combination of fields from this hierarchy. That each member of the hierarchy is linearisable, and integrable in this sense, means that the time evolving solution can be generated from the solution to the corresponding linear dispersion equation in the hierarchy, combined with solving an associated linear Fredholm equation representing the Marchenko equation. Further, we show …
We study properties of the realizations of groups as the combinatorial automorphism group of a convex polytope. We show that for any non-abelian group $G$ with a central involution there is a centrally symmetric polytope with $G$ as its combinatorial automorphisms. We show that for each integer $n$, there are groups that cannot be realized as the combinatorial automorphisms of convex polytopes of dimension at most $n$. We also give an optimal lower bound for the dimension of the realization of a group as the group of isometries that preserves a convex polytope.
We present several non-commutative extensions of the MacMahon Master Theorem, further extending the results of Cartier-Foata and Garoufalidis-Le-Zeilberger. The proofs are combinatorial and new even in the classical cases. We also give applications to the $β$-extension and Krattenthaler-Schlosser's $q$-analogue.
We review a class of problems on the borders of topology of torus actions, commutative homological algebra and combinatorial geometry, which is currently being investigated by Victor Buchstaber and the author. The text builds on the lectures delivered on the transformation group courses in Osaka City University and Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. We start with discussing several well-known results and problems on combinatorial geometry of polytopes and simplicial complexes, and then move gradually towards investigating the combinatorial structures associated with spaces acted on by the toru…
We briefly review the rôle played by algebraic structures like combinatorial Hopf algebras in the renormalizability of (noncommutative) quantum field theory. After sketching the commutative case, we analyze the noncommutative Grosse-Wulkenhaar model.
There is a very natural and well-behaved Hopf algebra morphism from quasisymmetric functions to peak algebra, which we call it Theta map. This paper focuses on generalizing the peak algebra by constructing generalized Theta maps for an arbitrary combinatorial Hopf algebra. The image of Theta maps lies in the odd Hopf subalgebras, so we present a strategy to find odd Hopf subalgebra of any combinatorial Hopf algebra. We also give a combinatorial description of a family of Theta maps for Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations $\operatorname{\mathsf{\mathfrak{S}Sym}}$ whose images are …
In this short survey we present the appearance of some combinatorial notions in quantum field theory. We first focus on topological graph polynomials (the Tutte polynomial and its multivariate version) and their relation with the parametric representation of the commutative $Φ^4$ field theory. We then generalize this to ribbon graphs and present the relation of the Bollobás-Riordan polynomial with the parametric representation of some $Φ^4$ field theory on the non-commutative Moyal space. We also review the rôle played by the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra as the combinatorial backbone of the ren…
We extend the usual notion of fully commutative elements from the Coxeter groups to the complex reflection groups. Then we decompose the sets of fully commutative elements into natural subsets according to their combinatorial properties, and investigate the structure of these decompositions. As a consequence, we enumerate and describe the form of these elements in the complex reflection groups.
This manuscript stands at the interface between combinatorial Hopf algebra theory and renormalization theory. Its plan is as follows: Section 1 is the introduction, and contains as well an elementary invitation to the subject. The rest of part I, comprising Sections 2-6, is devoted to the basics of Hopf algebra theory and examples, in ascending level of complexity. Part II turns around the all-important Faa di Bruno Hopf algebra. Section 7 contains a first, direct approach to it. Section 8 gives applications of the Faa di Bruno algebra to quantum field theory and Lagrange reversion. Section 9 …
We investigate quasisymmetric functions coming from combinatorial Hopf monoids. We show that these invariants arise naturally in Ehrhart theory, and that some of their specializations are Hilbert functions for relative simplicial complexes. This class of complexes, called forbidden composition complexes, also forms a Hopf monoid, thus demonstrating a link between Hopf algebras, Ehrhart theory, and commutative algebra. We also study various specializations of quasisymmetric functions.
Let X be a simplicial complex with the ground set V. Define its Alexander dual as a simplicial complex X* = {A \subset V: V \setminus A \notin X}. The combinatorial Alexander duality states that the i-th reduced homology group of X is isomorphic to the (|V|-i-3)-th reduced cohomology group of X* (over a given commutative ring R). We give a self-contained proof.
In this work a combinatorial description is provided of a Faa di Bruno type Hopf algebra which naturally appears in the context of Fliess operators in nonlinear feedback control theory. It is a connected graded commutative and non-cocommutative Hopf algebra defined on rooted circle trees. A cancellation free forest formula for its antipode is given.
Let $R$ be an arbitrary subset of a commutative ring. We introduce a combinatorial model for the set of tame frieze patterns with entries in $R$ based on a notion of irreducibility of frieze patterns. When $R$ is a ring, then a frieze pattern is reducible if and only if it contains an entry (not on the border) which is $1$ or $-1$. To my knowledge, this model generalizes simultaneously all previously presented models for tame frieze patterns bounded by $0$'s and $1$'s.
The Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of rooted trees, its dual, and the Foissy Hopf algebra of of planar rooted trees are related to each other and to the well-known Hopf algebras of symmetric and quasi-symmetric functions via a pair of commutative diagrams. We show how this point of view can simplify computations in the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra and its dual, particularly for combinatorial Dyson-Schwinger equations.
This is a study on pattern Hopf algebras in combinatorial structures. We introduce the notion of combinatorial presheaf, by adapting the algebraic framework of species to the study of substructures in combinatorics. Afterwards, we consider functions that count the number of patterns of objects and endow the linear span of these functions with a product and a coproduct. In this way, any well behaved family of combinatorial objects that admits a notion of substructure generates a Hopf algebra, and this association is functorial. For example, the Hopf algebra on permutations studied by Vargas in …
Boolean, free and monotone cumulants as well as relations among them, have proven to be important in the study of non-commutative probability theory. Quite notably, Boolean cumulants were successfully used to study free infinite divisibility via the Boolean Bercovici--Pata bijection. On the other hand, in recent years the concept of infinitesimal non-commutative probability has been developed, together with the notion of infinitesimal cumulants which can be useful in the context of combinatorial questions. In this paper, we show that the known relations among free, Boolean and monotone cumulan…
A purely combinatorial construction of the quantum cohomology ring of the flag manifold $G/B$ is presented. We show that the ring we construct is commutative, associative and satisfies the usual grading condition. By using results of two of our previous papers, we obtain a presentation of this ring in terms of generators and relations, as well as formulas for quantum Giambelli polynomials. We show that these polynomials satisfy a certain orthogonality property, which - for G=SL_n(C) - was proved previously by Fomin, Gelfand and Postnikov.
We construct the affine version of the Fomin-Kirillov algebra, called the affine FK algebra, to investigate the combinatorics of affine Schubert calculus for type $A$. We introduce Murnaghan-Nakayama elements and Dunkl elements in the affine FK algebra. We show that they are commutative as Bruhat operators, and the commutative algebra generated by these operators is isomorphic to the cohomology of the affine flag variety. We show that the cohomology of the affine flag variety is product of the cohomology of an affine Grassmannian and a flag variety, which are generated by MN elements and Dunkl…
The paper surveys some new results and open problems connected with such fundamental combinatorial concepts as polytopes, simplicial complexes, cubical complexes, and subspace arrangements. Particular attention is paid to the case of simplicial and cubical subdivisions of manifolds and, especially, spheres. We describe important constructions which allow to study all these combinatorial objects by means of methods of commutative and homological algebra. The proposed approach to combinatorial problems relies on the theory of moment-angle complexes, currently being developed by the authors. The …
This paper introduces a new structure of commutative semiring, generalizing the tropical semiring, and having an arithmetic that modifies the standard tropical operations, i.e. summation and maximum. Although our framework is combinatorial, notions of regularity and invertibility arise naturally for matrices over this semiring; we show that a tropical matrix is invertible if and only if it is regular.
The commutative and homological algebra of modules over posets is developed, as closely parallel as possible to the algebra of finitely generated modules over noetherian commutative rings, in the direction of finite presentations, primary decompositions, and resolutions. Interpreting this finiteness in the language of derived categories of subanalytically constructible sheaves proves two conjectures due to Kashiwara and Schapira concerning sheaves with microsupport in a given cone. The motivating case is persistent homology of arbitrary filtered topological spaces, especially the case of multi…
Let V be a complex vector space with basis {x_1,x_2,...,x_n} and G be a finite subgroup of GL(V). The tensor algebra T(V) over the complex is isomorphic to the polynomials in the non-commutative variables x_1, x_2,..., x_n with complex coefficients. We want to give a combinatorial interpretation for the decomposition of T(V) into simple G-modules. In particular, we want to study the graded space of invariants in T(V) with respect to the action of G. We give a general method for decomposing the space T(V) into simple modules in terms of words in a Cayley graph of the group G. To apply the metho…
We show that combinatorial objects called row-strict composition tableaux, introduced by Mason and Remmel in 2014 and closely related to the quasi-symmetric Schur functions of Haglund-Luoto-Mason-van Willigenburg, form a basis for Schur functors of finite free modules over arbitrary commutative rings. When the ring is the complex numbers, this produces a new basis for the irreducible polynomial representations of $\operatorname{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$. Moreover, in this case it also produces new basis for the Plücker algebra, a subalgebra of the polynomial ring over $\mathbb{C}$ in $n^2$ variables…
Using the combinatorial species setting, we propose two new operad structures on multigraphs and on pointed oriented multigraphs. The former can be considered as a canonical operad on multigraphs, directly generalizing the Kontsevich-Willwacher operad, and has many interesting suboperads. The latter is a natural extension of the pre-Lie operad in a sense developed here and related to the multigraph operad. We study some of the finitely generated suboperads of the multigraph operad and establish links between them and the commutative operad and the commutative magmatic operad.
A combinatorial Hopf algebra is a graded connected Hopf algebra over a field $F$ equipped with a character (multiplicative linear functional) $ζ:H\to F$. We show that the terminal object in the category of combinatorial Hopf algebras is the algebra $QSym$ of quasi-symmetric functions; this explains the ubiquity of quasi-symmetric functions as generating functions in combinatorics. We illustrate this with several examples. We prove that every character decomposes uniquely as a product of an even character and an odd character. Correspondingly, every combinatorial Hopf algebra $(H,ζ)$ possesses …
With a compact PL manifold X we associate a category T(X). The objects of T(X) are all combinatorial manifolds of type X, and morphisms are combinatorial assemblies. We prove that the homotopy equivalence BT (X) \approx BPL(X) holds, where PL(X) is the simplicial group of PL-homeomorphisms. Thus the space BT(X) is a canonical countable (as a CW-complex) model of BPL(X). As a result, we obtain functorial pure combinatorial models for PL fiber bundles with fiber X and a PL polyhedron B as the base. Such a model looks like a T(X)-coloring of some triangulation K of B. The vertices of K are colore…
The theory of cumulants is revisited in the "Rota way", that is, by following a combinatorial Hopf algebra approach. Monotone, free, and boolean cumulants are considered as infinitesimal characters over a particular combinatorial Hopf algebra. The latter is neither commutative nor cocommutative, and has an underlying unshuffle bialgebra structure which gives rise to a shuffle product on its graded dual. The moment-cumulant relations are encoded in terms of shuffle and half-shuffle exponentials. It is then shown how to express concisely monotone, free, and boolean cumulants in terms of each oth…
We study some algebraic and combinatorial features of two algebras that arise as quotients of Temperley-Lieb algebras of type $\tilde{C}$, namely, the two-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra and the symplectic blob algebra. We provide a monomial basis for both algebras. The elements of these bases are parameterized by certain subsets of fully commutative elements. We enumerate these elements according to their affine length.
