This paper introduces a new structure of commutative semiring, generalizing the tropical semiring, and having an arithmetic that modifies the standard tropical operations, i.e. summation and maximum. Although our framework is combinatorial, notions of regularity and invertibility arise naturally for matrices over this semiring; we show that a tropical matrix is invertible if and only if it is regular.
We give a description of the tropical variety of univariate polynomials of degree n having two double roots. As a set, it is given as the union of three types of maximal cones of dimension n-1, where only cones of two of these types are cones of the secondary fan of {0,...,n}. Through Kapranov's theorem, this goal is achieved by a careful study of the possible valuations of the elementary symmetric functions of the roots of a polynomial with two double root. Despite its apparent simplicity, the computation of the tropical Severi variety has both combinatorial and arithmetic ingredients.
We study tropical commuting matrices from two viewpoints: linear algebra and algebraic geometry. In classical linear algebra, there exist various criteria to test whether two square matrices commute. We ask for similar criteria in the realm of tropical linear algebra, giving conditions for two tropical matrices that are polytropes to commute. From the algebro-geometric perspective, we explicitly compute the tropicalization of the classical variety of commuting matrices in dimension 2 and 3.
In this note, we propose a novel technique to reduce the algorithmic complexity of neural network training by using matrices of tropical real numbers instead of matrices of real numbers. Since the tropical arithmetics replaces multiplication with addition, and addition with max, we theoretically achieve several order of magnitude better constant factors in time complexities in the training phase. The fact that we replace the field of real numbers with the tropical semiring of real numbers and yet achieve the same classification results via neural networks come from deep results in topology and…
This is a foundational paper in tropical linear algebra, which is linear algebra over the min-plus semiring. We introduce and compare three natural definitions of the rank of a matrix, called the Barvinok rank, the Kapranov rank and the tropical rank. We demonstrate how these notions arise naturally in polyhedral and algebraic geometry, and we show that they differ in general. Realizability of matroids plays a crucial role here. Connections to optimization are also discussed.
We introduce a tropical geometric framework that allows us to define $ψ$ classes for moduli spaces of tropical curves of arbitrary genus. We prove correspondence theorems between algebraic and tropical $ψ$ classes for some one-dimensional families of genus-one tropical curves.
We show that the number of combinatorial types of clusters of type $D_4$ modulo reflection-rotation is exactly equal to the number of combinatorial types of tropical planes in $\mathbb{TP}^5$. This follows from a result of Sturmfels and Speyer which classifies these tropical planes into seven combinatorial classes using a detailed study of the tropical Grassmannian $\operatorname{Gr}(3,6)$. Speyer and Williams show that the positive part $\operatorname{Gr}^+(3,6)$ of this tropical Grassmannian is combinatorially equivalent to a small coarsening of the cluster fan of type $D_4$. We provide a st…
We show that the non-commutative geometric approach to the Riemann zeta function has an algebraic geometric incarnation: the "Arithmetic Site". This site involves the tropical semiring viewed as a sheaf on the topos which is the dual of the multiplicative semigroup of positive integers. We prove that the set of points of the arithmetic site over the maximal compact subring of the tropical semifield is the non-commutative space quotient of the adele class space of Q by the action of the maximal compact subgroup of the idele class group. We realize the Frobenius correspondences in the square of …
This paper introduces the foundations of the polynomial algebra and basic structures for algebraic geometry over the extended tropical semiring. Our development, which includes the tropical version for the fundamental theorem of algebra, leads to the reduced polynomial semiring -- a structure that provides a basis for developing a tropical analogue to the classical theory of commutative algebra. The use of the new notion of tropical algebraic com-sets, built upon the complements of tropical algebraic sets, eventually yields the tropical algebraic Nullstellensatz.
Tropical algebraic geometry is the geometry of the tropical semiring $(\mathbb{R},\min,+)$. Its objects are polyhedral cell complexes which behave like complex algebraic varieties. We give an introduction to this theory, with an emphasis on plane curves and linear spaces. New results include a complete description of the families of quadrics through four points in the tropical projective plane and a counterexample to the incidence version of Pappus' Theorem.
We introduce an idempotent analogue of the exterior algebra for which the theory of tropical linear spaces (and valuated matroids) can be seen in close analogy with the classical Grassmann algebra formalism for linear spaces. The top wedge power of a tropical linear space is its Plucker vector, which we view as a tensor, and a tropical linear space is recovered from its Plucker vector as the kernel of the corresponding wedge multiplication map. We prove that an arbitrary d-tensor satisfies the tropical Plucker relations (valuated exchange axiom) if and only if the d-th wedge power of the kerne…
We introduce algebraic structures on the polyvector fields of an algebraic torus that serve to compute multiplicities in tropical and log Gromov-Witten theory while also connecting to the mirror symmetry dual deformation theory of complex structures. Most notably these structures include a tropical quantum field theory and an $L_{\infty}$-structure. The latter is an instance of Getzler's gravity algebra, and the $l_2$-bracket is a restriction of the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket. We explain the relationship to string topology in the appendix (thanks to Janko Latschev).
We study the generic tropical initial ideals of a positively graded Cohen-Macaulay algebra $R$ over an algebraically closed field $\mathbf{k}$. Building on work of Römer and Schmitz, we give a formula for each initial ideal, and we express the associated quasivaluations in terms of certain $I$-adic filtrations. As a corollary, we show that in the case that $R$ is a domain, every initial ideal coming from the codimension-$1$ skeleton of the tropical variety is prime, so "generic presentations of Cohen-Macaulay domains are well-poised in codimension-$1$."
The tropical semifield, i.e., the real numbers enhanced by the operations of addition and maximum, serves as a base of tropical mathematics. Addition is an abelian group operation, whereas the maximum defines an idempotent semigroup structure. We address the question of the geometry of idempotent semigroups, in particular, tropical algebraic sets carrying the structure of a commutative idempotent semigroup. We show that commutative idempotent semigroups are contractible, that systems of tropical polynomials, formed from univariate monomials, define subsemigroups with respect to coordinate-wise…
We continue, in this second article, the study of the the algebraic tools which play a role in tropical algebra. We especially examine here the polynomial algebras over idempotent semi-fields. this work is motivated by the development of tropical geometry which appears to be the algebraic geometry of tropical algebra. In fact, the most interesting object is the image of a polynomial algebra in its semi-field of fractions. We can thus obtain, over good semi-fields, the analog of classical correpondences between polynomials, and varieties of zeros... For example, we show that the algebras of pol…
Tropical Differential Algebraic Geometry considers difficult or even intractable problems in Differential Equations and tries to extract information on their solutions from a restricted structure of the input. The Fundamental Theorem of Tropical Differential Algebraic Geometry states that the support of solutions of systems of ordinary differential equations with formal power series coefficients over an uncountable algebraically closed field of characteristic zero can be obtained by solving a so-called tropicalized differential system. Tropicalized differential equations work on a completely d…
First, we define phase tropical hypersurfaces in terms of a degeneration data of smooth complex algebraic hypersurfaces in $(\mathbb{C}^*)^n$. Next, we prove that complex hyperplanes are diffeomorphic to their degeneration called phase tropical hyperplanes. More generally, using Mikhalkin's decomposition into pairs-of-pants of smooth algebraic hypersurfaces, we show that phase tropical hypersurfaces with smooth tropicalization, possess naturally a smooth differentiable structure. Moreover, we prove that phase tropical hypersurfaces possess a natural symplectic structure.
We construct polyhedral families of valuations on the branching algebra of a morphism of reductive groups. This establishes a connection between the combinatorial rules for studying a branching problem and the tropical geometry of the branching algebra. In the special case when the branching problem comes from the inclusion of a Levi subgroup or a diagonal subgroup, we use the dual canonical basis of Lusztig and Kashiwara to build toric deformations of the branching algebra.
We introduce the Arithmetic Site: an algebraic geometric space deeply related to the non-commutative geometric approach to the Riemann Hypothesis. We prove that the non-commutative space quotient of the adele class space of the field of rational numbers by the maximal compact subgroup of the idele class group, which we had previously shown to yield the correct counting function to obtain the complete Riemann zeta function as Hasse-Weil zeta function, is the set of geometric points of the arithmetic site over the semifield of tropical real numbers. The action of the multiplicative group of posi…
We show that the algebraic invariants multiplicity and depth of a graded ideal in the polynomial ring are closely connected to the fan structure of its generic tropical variety in the constant coefficient case. Generically the multiplicity of the ideal is shown to correspond directly to a natural definition of multiplicity of cones of tropical varieties. Moreover, we can recover information on the depth of the ideal from the fan structure of the generic tropical variety if the depth is known to be greater than 0. In particular, in this case we can see if the ideal is Cohen-Macaulay or almost-C…
The algebraic foundation of tropical polynomial algebra provides the framework for the geometric construction of the supplement and the reversal of tropical varieties, thereby inducing a duality of reduced tropical varieties; for classes of tropical hypersurfaces the corresponding point symmetry is obtained for their Newton polytopes and lattice polytopes.
We investigate the semi-ringed topos obtained by extension of scalars from the arithmetic site of our previous work, by replacing the smallest Boolean semifield by the tropical semifield of real numbers with the max-plus operations. The obtained site is the semi-direct product of the Euclidean half-line by the action of the monoid of positive integers by multiplication. Its points are the same as the points of the arithmetic site over the tropical semifield of real numbers, and coincide with the quotient of the adele class space of Q by the action of the maximal compact subgroup of the idele c…
In this paper we present two intrinsic algebraic definitions of tropical variety motivated by the classical Zariski correspondence, one utilizing the algebraic structure of the coordinate semiring of an affine supertropical algebraic set, and the second based on the layered structure. We tie them to tropical geometry, especially in connection with the dimension of an affine variety.

We prove that a semiring isomorphism between the rational function semifields of two tropical curves induces an expansive map between those tropical curves. This semiring isomorphism and the expansive map respect zeros and poles of rational functions with their degrees. As a corollary, we show that the automorphism group of a tropical curve is isomorphic to the $\boldsymbol{T}$-algebra automorphism group of its rational function semifield, where $\boldsymbol{T} := (\boldsymbol{R} \cup \{ -\infty \}, \operatorname{max}, +)$ is the tropical semifield. Finally, we describe all semiring automorphi…
We develop some algebraic structure notions such as composition series and convexity degree, along with some notions holding a geometric interpretation, like reducibility and hyperdimension, with the main objective being a tropical Krull-Schmidt theorem.
A tropical (or min-plus) semiring is a set $\mathbb{Z}$ (or $\mathbb{Z \cup \{\infty\}}$) endowed with two operations: $\oplus$, which is just usual minimum, and $\odot$, which is usual addition. In tropical algebra the vector $x$ is a solution to a polynomial $g_1(x) \oplus g_2(x) \oplus...\oplus g_k(x)$, where $g_i(x)$'s are tropical monomials, if the minimum in $\min_i(g_{i}(x))$ is attained at least twice. In min-plus algebra solutions of systems of equations of the form $g_1(x)\oplus...\oplus g_k(x) = h_1(x)\oplus...\oplus h_l(x)$ are studied. In this paper we consider computational probl…
In this thesis we study toric degenerations of projective varieties. We compare different constructions to understand how and why they are related as s first step towards developing a global framework. In focus are toric degenerations obtained from representation theory, tropical geometry and cluster algebras. Often those rely on valuations and the theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies. Toric degenerations can be seen as a combinatorial shadow of the original objects. The goal is therefore to understand why the different theories are so closely related, by understanding the toric degenerations they…

The concepts of tropical-semiring and tropical hypersurface, are extended for an arbitrary ordered group. Then, we define the tropicalization of a polynomial with coefficients in a Krull-valued field. After a close study of the properties of the operator "tropicalization" we conclude with an extension of Kapranov's theorem to algebraically closed fields together with a valuation over an ordered group.
Our objective in this project is three-fold, the first two covered in this paper. In tropical mathematics, as well as other mathematical theories involving semirings, when trying to formulate the tropical versions of classical algebraic concepts for which the negative is a crucial ingredient, such as determinants, Grassmann algebras, Lie algebras, Lie superalgebras, and Poisson algebras, one often is challenged by the lack of negation. Following an idea originating in work of Gaubert and the Max-Plus group and brought to fruition by Akian, Gaubert, and Guterman, we study algebraic structures w…
We introduce in this paper the concept of tropical mirror hypersurfaces and we prove a complex tropical localization Theorem which is a version of Kapranov's Theorem \cite{K-00} in tropical geometry. We give a geometric and a topological equivalence between coamoebas of complex algebraic hypersurfaces defined by a maximally sparse polynomial and coamoebas of maximally sparse complex tropical hypersurfaces.
Exploded layered tropical (ELT) algebra is an extension of tropical algebra with a structure of layers. These layers allow us to use classical algebraic results in order to easily prove analogous tropical results. Specifically we study the connection between the ELT determinant and linear dependency, and use a generalized version of Kapranov Theorem proved in [7] (called the Fundamental Theorem). In this paper we prove that an ELT matrix is singular if and only if its rows are linearly dependent and that the row rank and submatrix rank of an ELT matrix are equal. We also define an ELT rank for…
This paper is a continuation of [arXiv:1603.02204]. Exploded layered tropical (ELT) algebra is an extension of tropical algebra with a structure of layers. These layers allow us to use classical algebraic results in order to easily prove analogous tropical results. Specifically we prove and use an ELT version of the transfer principal presented in [2]. In this paper we use the transfer principle to prove an ELT version of Cayley-Hamilton Theorem, and study the multiplicity of the ELT determinant, ELT adjoint matrices and quasi-invertible matrices. We also define a new notion of trace -- the es…
We study the relation between the integer tropical points of a cluster variety (satisfying the full Fock-Goncharov conjecture) and the totally positive part of the tropicalization of an ideal presenting the corresponding cluster algebra. Suppose we are given a presentation of the cluster algebra by a Khovanskii basis for a collection of ${\bf g}$-vector valuations associated with several seeds related by mutations. In presence of a full rank fully extended exchange matrix we construct the rays of a subfan of the totally positive part of the tropicalization of the ideal that coincides combinato…
