We consider the global well-posedness of weak energy conservative solution to a general quasilinear wave equation through variational principle, where the solution may form finite time cusp singularity, when energy concentrates. As a main result in this paper, we construct a Finsler type optimal transport metric, then prove that the solution flow is Lipschitz under this metric. We also prove a generic regularity result by applying Thom's transversality theorem, then find piecewise smooth transportation paths among a dense set of solutions. The results in this paper are for large data solutions, without restriction on the size of solutions.
In this paper we derive the Pohozaev identity for quasilinear equations \begin{equation}\tag{$E$}\label{eq:p} -\operatorname{div}(B'(H(\nabla u))\nabla H(\nabla u))=g(x, u) \quad \text {in}\,\, Ω, \end{equation} involving the anisotropic Finsler operator $-\operatorname{div}(B'(H(\nabla u))\nabla H(\nabla u))$. In particular, by means of fine regularity results on the vectorial field $B'(H(\nabla u))\nabla H(\nabla u)$, we prove the identity for weak solutions and in a direct way.
We bound the modulus of continuity of solutions to quasilinear parabolic equations in one space variable in terms of the initial modulus of continuity and elapsed time. In particular we characterize those equations for which the Lipschitz constants of solutions can be bounded in terms of their initial oscillation and elapsed time.
The goal of this article is to establish local Lipschitz continuity of weak solutions for a class of degenerated elliptic equations of divergence form, in the Heisenberg Group. The considered hypothesis for the growth and ellipticity condition is a natural generalization of the p-Laplace equation and more general quasilinear elliptic equations with polynomial or exponential type growth.
We prove Hölder continuity up to the boundary for solutions of quasi-linear degenerate elliptic problems in divergence form, not necessarily of variational type, on Lipschitz domains with Neumann and Robin boundary conditions. This includes the $p$-Laplace operator for all $p \in (1,\infty)$, but also operators with unbounded coefficients. Based on the elliptic result we show that the corresponding parabolic problem is well-posed in the space $C(\barΩ)$ provided that the coefficients satisfy a mild monotonicity condition. More precisely, we show that the realization of the elliptic operator in…
We establish a Lipschitz stability inequality for the problem of determining the nonlinear term in a quasilinear elliptic equation by boundary measurements. We give a proof based on a linearization procedure together with special solutions constructed from the fundamental solution of the linearized problem.
We prove the global regularity of weak solutions to the conormal derivative boundary value problem for quasilinear elliptic equations in divergence form on Lipschitz domains under the controlled growth conditions on the low order terms. The leading coefficients are in the class of BMO functions with small mean oscillations.
Let Ωbe a bounded connected, open set of \R^n with Lipschitz boundary. Let F be a suitable norm in \R^n and let Δ_F u be the so-colled Finsler Laplacian. In this paper we prove two inequalities for the first eigenvalue of Δ_F with Robin boundary conditions involving a positive function β. As a consequence of our result we obtain the asymptotic behavior of this eigenvalue when βis a positive constant which goes to zero.
We establish global regularity for weak solutions to quasilinear divergence form elliptic and parabolic equations over Lipschitz domains with controlled growth conditions on low order terms. The leading coefficients belong to the class of BMO functions with small mean oscillations with respect to $x$.
We consider a class of abstract quasilinear parabolic problems with lower--order terms exhibiting a prescribed singular structure. We prove well--posedness and Lipschitz continuity of associated semiflows. Moreover, we investigate global existence of solutions and we extend the generalized principle of linearized stability to settings with initial values in critical spaces. These general results are applied to the surface diffusion flow in various settings.
In this paper study the regularity of continuous casting problem \begin{equation} \hbox{div}(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u-{\bf v} β(u))=0\tag{$\sharp$} \end{equation} for prescribed constant velocity $\bf v$ and enthalpy $β(u)$ with jump discontinuity at $u=0$. We establish the following estimates: local log-Lipschitz $p>2$ for $u$ (and BMO for $\nabla u$) for two phase, Lipschitz $p>1$ for one phase and linear growth up-to boundary near the contact points. We also prove that the free boundary is continuous curve in the direction of $\bf v$ in two spatial dimensions. The proof is based on a delica…
We establish a comprehensive local wellposedness theory for the quasilinear Maxwell system with interfaces in the space of piecewise $H^m$-functions for $m \geq 3$. The system is equipped with instantaneous and piecewise regular material laws and perfectly conducting interfaces and boundaries. We also provide a blow-up criterion in the Lipschitz norm and prove the continuous dependence on the data. The proof relies on precise a priori estimates and the regularity theory for the corresponding linear problem also shown here.
We consider the optimization problem of minimizing $\int_Ω|\nabla u|^p dx$ with a constrain on the volume of $\{u>0\}$. We consider a penalization problem, and we prove that for small values of the penalization parameter, the constrained volume is attained. In this way we prove that every solution $u$ is locally Lipschitz continuous and that the free boundary, $\partial\{u>0\}\cap Ω$, is smooth.
In a previous paper we considered a class of infinitely degenerate quasilinear equations and derived a priori bounds for high order derivatives of solutions in terms of the Lipschitz norm. We now show that it is possible to obtain bounds just in terms of the supremum norm for a further subclass of such equations, and we apply the resulting estimates to prove that continuous weak solutions are necessarily smooth. We also obtain existence, uniqueness and interior regularity of solutions for the Dirichlet problem with continuous boundary data.
We investigate the regularity of semi-stable, radially symmetric, and decreasing solutions for a class of quasilinear reaction-diffusion equations in the inhomogeneous context of Riemannian manifolds. We prove uniform boundedness, Lebesgue and Sobolev estimates for this class of solutions for equations involving the p-Laplace Beltrami operator and locally Lipschitz non-linearity. We emphasize that our results do not depend on the boundary conditions and the specific form of the non-linearities and metric. Moreover, as an application, we establish regularity of the extremal solutions for equati…
In this paper, we study some potential theoretic aspects of the eikonal and infinity Laplace operator on a Finsler manifold $M$. Our main result shows that the forward completeness of $M$ can be detected in terms of Liouville properties and maximum principles at infinity for subsolutions of suitable inequalities, including $Δ^N_\infty u \ge g(u)$. Also, an $\infty$-capacity criterion and a viscosity version of Ekeland principle are proved to be equivalent to the forward completeness of $M$. Part of the proof hinges on a new boundary-to-interior Lipschitz estimate for solutions of $Δ^N_\infty u…
In this article we provide a local wellposedness theory for quasilinear Maxwell equations with absorbing boundary conditions in $\mathcal{H}^m$ for $m \geq 3$. The Maxwell equations are equipped with instantaneous nonlinear material laws leading to a quasilinear symmetric hyperbolic first order system. We consider both linear and nonlinear absorbing boundary conditions. We show existence and uniqueness of a local solution, provide a blow-up criterion in the Lipschitz norm, and prove the continuous dependence on the data. In the case of nonlinear boundary conditions we need a smallness assumpti…
We consider the Lipschitz continuous dependence of solutions for the Novikov equation with respect to the initial data. In particular, we construct a Finsler type optimal transport metric which renders the solution map Lipschitz continuous on bounded set of $H^1(R)\cap W^{1,4}(R)$, although it is not Lipschitz continuous under the natural Sobolev metric from energy law due to the finite time gradient blowup. By an application of Thom's transversality Theorem, we also prove that when the initial data are in an open dense set of $H^1(R)\cap W^{1,4}(R)$, the solution is piecewise smooth. This gen…
We study quasilinear elliptic equations of the form $\text{div} \mathbf{A}(x,u,\nabla u) = \text{div}\mathbf{F} $ in bounded domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 1$. The vector field $\mathbf{A}$ is allowed to be discontinuous in $x$, Lipschitz continuous in $u$ and its growth in the gradient variable is like the $p$-Laplace operator with $1<p<\infty$. We establish interior $W^{1,q}$-estimates for locally bounded weak solutions to the equations for every $q>p$, and we show that similar results also hold true in the setting of {\it Orlicz} spaces. Our regularity estimates extend results which are …
The concept of subdifferentiability is studied in the context of $C^1$ Finsler manifolds (modeled on a Banach space with a Lipschitz $C^1$ bump function). A class of Hamilton-Jacobi equations defined on $C^1$ Finsler manifolds is studied and several results related to the existence and uniqueness of viscosity solutions are obtained.
We prove boundary higher integrability for the (spatial) gradient of \emph{very weak} solutions of quasilinear parabolic equations of the form $$u_t - \text{div}\,\mathcal{A}(x,t, \nabla u)=0 \quad \text{on} \ Ω\times \mathbb{R},$$ where the non-linear structure $\text{div}\,\mathcal{A}(x, t,\nabla u)$ is modelled after the $p$-Laplace operator. To this end, we prove that the gradients satisfy a reverse Hölder inequality near the boundary. In order to do this, we construct a suitable test function which is Lipschitz continuous and preserves the boundary values. \emph{These results are new even…
We develop a higher regularity theory for general quasilinear elliptic equations and systems in divergence form with random coefficients. The main result is a large-scale $L^\infty$-type estimate for the gradient of a solution. The estimate is proved with optimal stochastic integrability under a one-parameter family of mixing assumptions, allowing for very weak mixing with non-integrable correlations to very strong mixing (e.g., finite range of dependence). We also prove a quenched $L^2$ estimate for the error in homogenization of Dirichlet problems. The approach is based on subadditive argume…
We consider the inverse problem of determining some class of nonlinear terms appearing in an elliptic equation from boundary measurements. More precisely, we study the stability issue for this class of inverse problems. Under suitable assumptions, we prove a Lipschitz and a Hölder stability estimate associated with the determination of quasilinear and semilinear terms appearing in this class of elliptic equations from measurements restricted to an arbitrary parts of the boundary of the domain. Besides their mathematical interest, our stability estimates can be useful for improving numerical re…
In this text, we shall give an outline of some recent results (see \ccite{bahourichemin2} \ccite{bahourichemin3} and \ccite{bahourichemin4}) of local wellposedness for two types of quasilinear wave equations for initial data less regular than what is required by the energy method. To go below the regularity prescribed by the classical theory of strictly hyperbolic equations, we have to use the particular properties of the wave equation. The result concerning the first kind of equations must be understood as a Strichartz estimate for wave operators whose coefficients are only Lipschitz while th…
The nonlinear wave equation $u_{tt}-c(u)(c(u)u_x)_x=0$ determines a flow of conservative solutions taking values in the space $H^1(\mathbb{R})$. However, this flow is not continuous w.r.t. the natural $H^1$ distance. Aim of this paper is to construct a new metric which renders the flow uniformly Lipschitz continuous on bounded subsets of $H^1(\mathbb{R})$. For this purpose, $H^1$ is given the structure of a Finsler manifold, where the norm of tangent vectors is defined in terms of an optimal transportation problem. For paths of piecewise smooth solutions, one can carefully estimate how the wei…
This paper is concerned with the nodal set of weak solutions to a broken quasilinear partial differential equation, \begin{equation*} \mbox{div} (a_+ \nabla u^+ - a_- \nabla u^-) = \mbox{div} f, \end{equation*} where $a_+$ and $a_-$ are uniformly elliptic, Dini continuous coefficient matrices, subject to a strong correlation that $a_+$ and $a_-$ are a multiple of some scalar function to each other. Under such a structural condition, we develop an iteration argument to achieve higher-order approximation of solutions at a singular point, which is also new for standard elliptic PDEs below Hölder …
In this paper, we study quasilinear parabolic equations with the nonlinearity structure modeled after the $p(x,t)$-Laplacian on nonsmooth domains. The main goal is to obtain end point Calderón-Zygmund type estimates in the variable exponent setting. In a recent work \cite{byun2016nonlinear}, the estimates obtained were strictly above the natural exponent $p(x,t)$ and hence there was a gap between the natural energy estimates and the estimates above $p(x,t)$ (see \eqref{energy} and \eqref{byunok}). Here, we bridge this gap to obtain the end point case of the estimates obtained in \cite{byun2016…
We consider a quasilinear degenerate parabolic equation driven by the orthotropic $p-$Laplacian. We prove that local weak solutions are locally Lipschitz continuous in the spatial variable, uniformly in time.
In this paper, we obtain weighted norm inequalities for the spatial gradients of weak solutions to quasilinear parabolic equations with weights in the Muckenhoupt class $A_{\frac{q}{p}}(\mathbb{R}^{n+1})$ for $q\geq p$ on non-smooth domains. Here the quasilinear nonlinearity is modelled after the standard $p$-Laplacian operator. Until now, all the weighted estimates for the gradient were obtained only for exponents $q>p$. The results for exponents $q>p$ used the full complicated machinery of the Calderón-Zygmund theory developed over the past few decades, but the constants blow up as $q \right…
We give a proof of existence and uniqueness of viscosity solutions to parabolic quasilinear equations for a fairly general class of nonconvex Hamiltonians with superlinear growth in the gradient variable. The approach is mainly based on classical techniques for uniformly parabolic quasilinear equations and on the Lipschitz estimates proved in [S.N. Armstrong and H.V. Tran, Viscosity solutions of general viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations, Math. Ann., 361 (2015)], as well as on viscosity solution arguments.
This paper is devoted to investigate an interpolation inequality between the Brezis-Vázquez and Poincaré inequalities (shortly, BPV inequality) on nonnegatively curved spaces. As a model case, we first prove that the BPV inequality holds on any Minkowski space, by fully characterizing the existence and shape of its extremals. We then prove that if a complete Finsler manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature supports the BPV inequality, then its flag curvature is identically zero. In particular, we deduce that a Berwald space of nonnegative Ricci curvature supports the BPV inequality if and onl…
We consider the problem of uniqueness of positive solutions to boundary value problems containing the equation: -Δ_p u =K(|x|)f(u), p>1. f is positive, is locally Lipschitz and satisfies some superlinear growth condition after u_0, a zero of f before which it is non positive and not identically 0. We show that the Sturmnian theory arguments used by Coffman and Kwong are valid for the equation containing the p-Laplacian operator, even though they were thought to be unextendable beyond the semilinear equation. We obtain a monotone separation result which finally yields the desired uniqueness res…

We consider in this article the system of gravity-capillary waves in all dimensions and under the Zakharov/Craig-Sulem formulation. Using a paradifferential approach introduced by Alazard-Burq-Zuily, we symmetrize this system into a quasilinear dispersive equation whose principal part is of order $3/2$. The main novelty, compared to earlier studies, is that this reduction is performed at the Sobolev regularity of quasilinear pdes: $H^s(R^d)$ with $s\textgreater{}3/2+d/2$, $d$ being the dimension of the free surface. From this reduction, we deduce a blow-up criterion involving solely the Lipsch…
In this article we develop the local wellposedness theory for quasilinear Maxwell equations in $H^m$ for all $m \geq 3$ on domains with perfectly conducting boundary conditions. The macroscopic Maxwell equations with instantaneous material laws for the polarization and the magnetization lead to a quasilinear first order hyperbolic system whose wellposedness in $H^3$ is not covered by the available results in this case. We prove the existence and uniqueness of local solutions in $H^m$ with $m \geq 3$ of the corresponding initial boundary value problem if the material laws and the data are accor…
We prove boundary higher integrability for the (spatial) gradient of \emph{very weak} solutions of quasilinear parabolic equations of the form $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} u_t - div \mathcal{A}(x,t,\nabla u) = 0 &\quad \text{on} \ Ω\times (-T,T), \\ u = 0 &\quad \text{on} \ \partial Ω\times (-T,T), \end{array} \right. $$ where the non-linear structure $\mathcal{A}(x, t,\nabla u)$ is modelled after the variable exponent $p(x,t)$-Laplace operator given by $|\nabla u|^{p(x,t)-2} \nabla u$. To this end, we prove that the gradients satisfy a reverse Hölder inequality near the boundary by constructi…

In this paper we consider a quasilinear elliptic PDE, $\text{div} (A(x,u) \nabla u) =0$, where the underlying physical problem gives rise to a jump for the conductivity $A(x,u)$, across a level surface for $u$. Our analysis concerns Lipschitz regularity for the solution $u$, and the regularity of the level surfaces, where $A(x,u)$ has a jump and the solution $u$ does not degenerate. In proving Lipschitz regularity of solutions, we introduce a new and unexpected type of ACF-monotonicity formula with two different operators, that might be of independent interest, and surely can be applied in oth…
