We study the density of states (DOS) inside superconducting Josephson SIsFS junctions with complex interlayer consisting of a thin superconducting spacer 's' between insulator I and a ferromagnetic metal F. The consideration is focused on the local density of states in the vicinity of a tunnel barrier, and it permits to estimate the current-voltage characteristics in the resistive state of such junctions. We study the influence of the proximity effect and Zeeman splitting on the properties of the system, and we find significant sub-gap regions with non-vanishing DOS. We also find manifestations of the 0-$π$ transition in the behavior of DOS in a thin s-layer. These properties lead to appearance of new characteristic features on I-V curves which provide additional information about electronic states inside the junction.
We study the peculiarities in current-phase relations (CPR) of the SIsFS junction in the region of $0$ to $π$ transition. These CPR consist of two independent branches corresponding to $0-$ and $π-$ states of the contact. We have found that depending on the transparency of the SIs tunnel barrier the decrease of the s-layer thickness leads to transformation of the CPR shape going in the two possible ways: either one of the branches exists only in discrete intervals of the phase difference $φ$ or both branches are sinusoidal but differ in the magnitude of their critical currents. We demonstrate …

We study theoretically the large variations of the supercurrent through a normal dot that are induced by a small quasiparticle injection current from normal leads connected to the dot. We find that the supercurrent decomposes into a subgap contribution, which depends on the voltages applied to the normal leads, as well as a contribution with opposite sign from energies outside the gap, which is insensitive to the voltages. As the voltages gradually suppress the subgap contribution, a critical voltage exists above which the contribution from energies outside the gap dominates, leading to a sign…
We study theoretically a short single-channel Josephson junction between superconductors in the trivial and topological phases. The junction is assumed to be biased by a small current and subjected to quasiparticle poisoning. We find that the presence of quasiparticles leads to a voltage signal from the Josephson junction that can be observed both in the trivial and in the topological phase. Quite remarkably, these voltage signatures are sufficiently different in the two phases such that they can serve as means to clearly distinguish between trivial Andreev and topological Majorana bound state…
We develop a theory of current-voltage (I-U) characteristics for superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) junctions. At small voltages and sufficiently low temperatures the I-U characteristics of the junction is controlled by the inelastic relaxation time, τ_{in}. In particular, the linear conductance is proportional to, τ_{in}. In this regime the I-U characteristics can be expressed solely in terms of dependence of the density of states in the normal region, ν(χ), on the phase difference of the order parameter across the the junction. In contrast, at large voltages the I-U characteris…
We study a planar Josephson junction under an applied DC voltage bias in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. Upon tuning the bias voltage across the junction, $V_{\rm J}$, the two ends of the junction are shown to simultaneously host both $0$- and $π$-Majorana modes. These modes can be probed using either a Scanning-Tunneling-Microscopy measurement or through resonant Andreev tunneling from a lead coupled to the junction. While these modes are mostly bound to the junction's ends, they can hybridize with the bulk by absorbing or emitting photons. We analyze this process both numerically…
We calculate the current-voltage (I-V) characteristic of a Josephson junction containing a resonant level in the weakly coupled regime (resonance width small compared to the superconducting gap). The phase $ϕ$ across the junction becomes time dependent in response to a DC current bias. Rabi oscillations in the Andreev levels produce a staircase I-V characteristic. The number of voltage steps counts the number of Rabi oscillations per $2π$ increment of $ϕ$, providing a way to probe the coherence of the qubit in the absence of any external AC driving. The phenomenology is the same as the "Majora…
Deep theoretical understanding of the electrical response of Josephson junctions is indispensable regarding both recent discoveries of new kinds of superconductivity and technological advances such as superconducting quantum computers. Here, we study the microscopic theory of the DC current-biased $I$-$V$ characteristics of Josephson tunnel junctions. We derive an analytical formula of the $I$-$V$ characteristics of generic junctions. We identify subharmonics of the $I$-$V$ characteristics and their underlying mechanism as the feedback effect of intrinsic AC currents generated by voltage pulse…
We propose to characterize Lévy-distributed stochastic fluctuations through the measurement of the average voltage drop across a current-biased Josephson junction. We show that the noise induced switching process in the Josephson washboard potential can be exploited to reveal and characterize Lévy fluctuations, also if embedded in a thermal noisy background. The measurement of the average voltage drop as a function of the noise intensity allows to infer the value of the stability index that characterizes Lévy-distributed fluctuations. An analytical estimate of the average velocity in the case …
Proximity-driven source of highly spin-polarized ac current on the basis of superconductor/weak ferromagnet/superconductor voltage-biased Josephson junction
We simulate the current-voltage relation of short layered superconductors, which we model as stacks of capacitively coupled Josephson junctions. The system is driven by external laser fields, in order to optically control the voltage drop across the junction. We identify parameter regimes in which supercurrents can be stabilised against thermally induced phase slips, thus reducing the effective voltage across the superconductor. Furthermore, single driven Josephson junctions are known to exhibit phase-locked states, where the superconducting phase is locked to the driving field. We numerically…
We present a quantitative study of the current-voltage characteristics (CVC) of SFIFS Josephson junctions (S denotes bulk superconductor, F - metallic ferromagnet, I - insulating barrier) with weak ferromagnetic interlayers in the diffusive limit. The problem is solved in the framework of the nonlinear Usadel equations. We consider the case of a strong tunnel barrier such that the left SF and the right FS bilayers are decoupled. We calculate the density of states (DOS) in SF bilayers using a self-consistent numerical method. Then we obtain the CVC of corresponding SFIFS junctions, and discuss …
