We present a quantitative study of the current-voltage characteristics (CVC) of SFIFS Josephson junctions (S denotes bulk superconductor, F - metallic ferromagnet, I - insulating barrier) with weak ferromagnetic interlayers in the diffusive limit. The problem is solved in the framework of the nonlinear Usadel equations. We consider the case of a strong tunnel barrier such that the left SF and the right FS bilayers are decoupled. We calculate the density of states (DOS) in SF bilayers using a self-consistent numerical method. Then we obtain the CVC of corresponding SFIFS junctions, and discuss their properties for different set of parameters including the thicknesses of ferromagnetic layers, the exchange field, and the magnetic scattering time. We observe the anomalous nonmonotonic CVC behavior in case of weak ferromagnetic interlayers, which we ascribe by DOS energy dependencies in case of small exchange fields in F layers.
Quantitative theory of the Josephson effect in SFIFS junctions (S denotes bulk superconductor, F - metallic ferromagnet, I - insulating barrier) is presented in the dirty limit. Fully self-consistent numerical procedure is employed to solve the Usadel equations at arbitrary values of the F-layers thicknesses, magnetizations, and interface parameters. In the case of antiparallel ferromagnets' magnetizations the effect of the critical current enhancement by the exchange field is observed, while in the case of parallel magnetizations the junction exhibits the transition to the pi-state. In the li…
We report experimental results on characteristics of SFIFS junctions and multi-terminal SFIFSIS devices (where S, I, and F denote a superconductor (Nb), an insulator (AlOx), and a ferromagnetic material (Ni), respectively). The SFIFS junctions serve as injectors in the SFIFSIS devices which have transistor-like properties; for this reason we call them Superconducting-Ferromagnetic Transistors (SFTs). We have found the F (Ni) thickness at which the SFIFS current-voltage characteristic (CVC) becomes linear. Furthermore, we investigated the DC and AC characteristics of SFTs of two types: ordinary…
The spin-orbit scattering effect on critical current through superconductor/ferromagnet (SF) bilayers separated by an insulator (SFIFS tunnel junction) have been investigated for the case of absence of the superconducting order parameter oscillations (thin F layers). The analysis is based on a microscopic theory for proximity coupled SF bilayer for different bilayer parameters (boundary transparency, proximity effect strength, relative orientation and value of the F layers exchange field). We find that the spin-orbit scattering considerably modifies dc Josephson current in SFIFS tunnel junctio…
The $J(ϕ)$ relation in SFIFS, SNINS and SIS tunnel junctions is studied. The method for analytical solution of linearized Usadel equations has been developed and applied to these structures. It is shown that the Josephson current across the structure has the sum of $\sin ϕ$ and $\sin 2ϕ$ components. Two different physical mechanisms are responsible for the sign of $\sin 2ϕ$. The first one is the depairing by current which contributes positively to the $\sin 2ϕ$ term, while the second one is the finite transparency of SF or SN interfaces which provides the negative contribution. In SFIFS juncti…
We show that the dc Josephson current through superconductor-antiferromagnet-superconductor (S/AF/S) junctions manifests a remarkable atomic scale dependence on the interlayer thickness. At low temperatures the junction is either a 0- or pi-junction depending on whether the AF interlayer consists of an even or odd number of atomic layers. This is associated with different symmetries of the AF interlayers in the two cases. In the junction with odd AF interlayers an additional pi-0 transition can take place as a function of temperature. This originates from the interplay of spin-split Andreev bo…
We calculate the dc supercurrent through a Josephson tunnel junction consisting of an antiferromagnetic (AF) interlayer sandwiched between two d-wave superconductors (d). Such d/AF/d junctions exhibit a rich dependence of the Josephson current on the interlayer parameters, including the possibility of 0-pi transitions with varying temperature or interlayer thickness. Furthermore, we study d/I/d junctions when the dSC leads include subdominant magnetic correlations. In this case induced magnetism near the interface can strongly diminish the critical current for 110 oriented junctions whereas no…
The anomalous ground state phase shift in S/AF/S Josephson junctions in the presence of the Rashba SO-coupling is predicted and numerically investigated. It is found to be a consequence of the uncompensated magnetic moment at the S/AF interfaces. The anomalous phase shift exhibits a strong dependence on the value of the SO-coupling and the sublattice magnetization with the simultaneous existence of stable and metastable branches. It depends strongly on the orientation of the Neel vector with respect to the S/AF interfaces via the dependence on the orientation of the interface uncompensated mag…
We report on observations of thickness dependent Josephson coupling and multiple Andreev reflections (MAR) in vertically stacked molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) - molybdenum rhenium (MoRe) Josephson junctions. MoRe, a chemically inert superconductor, allows for oxide free fabrication of high transparency vertical MoS2 devices. Single and bilayer MoS2 junctions display relatively large critical currents (up to 2.5 uA) and the appearance of sub-gap structure given by MAR. In three and four layer thick devices we observe orders of magnitude lower critical currents (sub-nA) and reduced quasiparticle g…
We comment on the work by Moler, et al., [Science 279, 1193 (1998)] concerning determination of the c-axis penetration depth in the single-layer compound Tl-2201 through measuring the magnetic flux due to isolated interlayer Josephson vortices.
The supercurrent transport in metallic Josephson tunnel junctions with an additional interlayer made up by chromium, being an itinerant antiferromagnet, was studied. Uniform Josephson coupling was observed as a function of the magnetic field. The supercurrent shows a weak dependence on the interlayer thickness for thin chromium layers and decays exponentially for thicker films. The diffusion constant and the coherence length in the antiferromagnet were estimated. The antiferromagnetic state of the barrier was indirectly verified using reference samples. Our results are compared to macroscopic …
Josephson plasma frequency is computed within the interlayer tunneling theory and compared against the experimental results in Tl_2Ba_2CuO_y and La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4. It is shown that the theoretical estimates are fully consistent with the recent experiments.
The Josephson effect can be regarded as a striking manifestation of exciton condensation. It has been suggested to tune the condensate phase of bilayer excitons by applying interlayer tunneling current. A poorly-understood phenomenon observed by Huang {\it et al} [Phys. Rev. Lett. $\bf 109$, 156802 (2012)] demonstrates that the critical values of the interlayer tunneling current at either edge can be controlled by passing a second interlayer tunneling current at the other edge. We successfully attribute this novel coupling to excitonic Josephson effect induced by tunneling-current generated re…
We calculate the dependence of the interlayer quasiparticle conductivity, $σ_q$, in a Josephson coupled d-wave superconductor on the magnetic field B||c and the temperature T. We consider a clean superconductor with resonant impurity scattering and a dominant coherent interlayer tunneling. When pancake vortices in adjacent layers are weakly correlated at low T the conductivity increases sharply with B before reaching an extended region of slow linear growth, while at high T it initially decreases and then reaches the same linear regime. For correlated pancakes $σ_q$ increases much more strongl…
The ground state of interlayer Josephson vortex systems is investigated on the basis of a simplified Lawrence-Doniach model in which spatial dependence of the gauge field and the amplitude of superconducting order parameter is not taken into account. Energy landscape is drawn with respect to the in-plane field, the period of insulating layers including Josephson vortices, and the shift from the aligned vortex lattice. The energy landscape has a multi-valley structure and ground-state configurations correspond to bifurcation points of the valleys. In the high-field region, the shear modulus bec…
We investigate superconductor/insulator/ferromagnet/superconductor (SIFS) tunnel Josephson junctions in the dirty limit, using the quasiclassical theory. We formulate a quantitative model describing the oscillations of critical current as a function of thickness of the ferromagnetic layer and use this model to fit recent experimental data. We also calculate quantitatively the density of states (DOS) in this type of junctions and compare DOS oscillations with those of the critical current.
A critical value in the product of the anisotropy parameter and the magnetic field is observed in interlayer Josephson-vortex systems by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. Below/above this critical value the thermodynamic phase transition between the normal and the superconducting states upon temperature sweeping is first/second order. The origin is the intrinsic pinning effect of the layered structure of high-Tc superconductors.
We present a quantitative study of the current-voltage characteristics (CVC) of diffusive superconductor/ insulator/ ferromagnet/ superconductor (SIFS) tunnel Josephson junctions. In order to obtain the CVC we calculate the density of states (DOS) in the F/S bilayer for arbitrary length of the ferromagnetic layer, using quasiclassical theory. For a ferromagnetic layer thickness larger than the characteristic penetration depth of the superconducting condensate into the F layer, we find an analytical expression which agrees with the DOS obtained from a self-consistent numerical method. We discus…
We study the Josephson plasma resonance (JPR) in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+y}$ (BSCCO) with spatially dependent interlayer-phase coherence (IPC). The half-irradiated BSCCO (HI-BSCCO), in which columnar defects are introduced only in a half of the sample, shows several resonance peaks, which are not simple superposition of the peaks in irradiated- and pristine-parts. JPR in HI-BSCCO changes its character from irradiated- to pristine-type at a crossover frequency ($ω_{cr}$). We demonstrate that the one-dimensional \LSGE, which takes into account the spatial dependence of IPC, can reproduce most …
We study the dynamics of Josephson junctions with a thin ferromagnetic layer F [superconductor-ferromagnet-insulator-ferromagnet-superconductor (SFIFS) junctions]. In such junctions, the phase difference $ϕ$ of the superconductors and magnetization $M$ in the F layer are two dynamic parameters coupled to each other. We derive equations describing the dynamics of these two parameters and formulate the conditions of validity. The coupled Josephson plasma waves and oscillations of the magnetization $M$ affect the form of the current-voltage ($I$-$V$) characteristics in the presence of a weak magn…
The Josephson current flowing through weak links containing ferromagnetic elements is studied theoretically under the condition that the quasiparticle distribution over energy states in the interlayer is spin-dependent. It is shown that the interplay between the spin-dependent quasiparticle distribution and the triplet superconducting correlations induced by the proximity effect between the superconducting leads and ferromagnetic elements of the interlayer, leads to the appearence of an additional contribution to the Josephson current. This additional contribution $j_t$ can be extracted from t…
The dependence of the critical current density j_c on the ferromagnetic interlayer thickness d_F was determined for Nb/Al_2O_3/Cu/Ni/Nb Josephson tunnel junctions with ferromagnetic \Ni interlayer from very thin film thicknesses (\sim 1 nm) upwards and classified into F-layer thickness regimes showing a dead magnetic layer, exchange, exchange + anisotropy and total suppression of j_c. The Josephson coupling changes from 0 to pi as function of d_F, and -very close to the crossover thickness- as function of temperature. The strong suppression of the supercurrent in comparison to non-magnetic \Nb…
We theoretically investigate an opportunity to implement a source of highly spin-polarized ac current on the basis of superconductor/weak ferromagnet/superconductor (SFS) voltage-biased junction in the regime of essential proximity effect and calculate the current flowing through the probe electrode tunnel coupled to the ferromagnetic interlayer region. It is shown that while the polarization of the dc current component is generally small in case of weak exchange field of the ferromagnet, there is an ac component of the current in the system. This ac current is highly spin-polarized and entire…
We find systematic signatures suggesting a different superconducting nature for a triple-layered cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ with respect to a double-layer through the properties of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs). Our measurements on the current-voltage characteristics reveal that the $c$-axis maximum Josephson current density is sensitive to the superfluid density in outer planes while the critical temperature and the superconducting gap remain unaffected. Switching dynamics of stacked IJJs exhibit that the fluctuation in gauge-invariant phase difference of an IJJ implies…
Motivated by recent pump-probe experiments indicating enhanced coherent $c$-axis transport in underdoped YBCO, we study Josephson junctions periodically driven by optical pulses. We propose a mechanism for this observation by demonstrating that a parametrically driven Josephson junction shows an enhanced imaginary part of the low-frequency conductivity when the driving frequency is above the plasma frequency, implying an effectively enhanced Josephson coupling. We generalize this analysis to a bilayer system of Josephson junctions modeling YBCO. Again, the Josephson coupling is enhanced when t…
The general solution for ballistic electronic transport through double-barrier Josephson junctions is derived. We show the existence of a regime of phase-coherent transport in which the supercurrent is proportional to the single barrier transparency and the way in which this coherence is destroyed for increasing interlayer thickness. The quasiparticle dc current at arbitrary voltage is determined.
Quantum-phase transitions in two layers of ultrasmall Josephson junctions, coupled capacitively with each other, are investigated. As the interlayer capacitance is increased, the system at zero temperature is found to exhibit an insulator-to-superconductor transition. It is shown that, unlike one-dimensional arrays with a similar coupling configuration, the transition cannot be accounted for exclusively by particle-hole pairs.
The lengthscale over which supercurrent from conventional BCS, $s$-wave, superconductors ($S$) can penetrate an adjacent ferromagnetic ($F$) layer depends on the ability to convert singlet Cooper pairs into triplet Cooper pairs. Spin aligned triplet Cooper pairs are not dephased by the ferromagnetic exchange interaction, and can thus penetrate an $F$ layer over much longer distances than singlet Cooper pairs. These triplet Cooper pairs carry a dissipationless spin current and are the fundamental building block for the fledgling field of superspintronics. Singlet-triplet conversion by inhomogen…
We consider dynamics of Josephson vortex lattice in layered superconductors with magnetic, charge (electrostatic) and charge-imbalance (quasiparticle) interactions between interlayer Josephson junctions taken into account. The macroscopic dynamical equations for interlayer Josephson phase differences, intralayer charge and electron-hole imbalance are obtained and used for numerical simulations. Different transformations of the vortex lattice structure are observed. It is shown that the additional dissipation due to the charge imbalance relaxation leads to the stability of triangular lattice.
The decrease of the barrier transparency in superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) Josephson junctions leads to the deviations of the current-phase relation from the sinusoidal form. The sign of second harmonics is important for many applications, in particular in junctions with a more complex structure like SNINS or SFIFS, where N is a normal metal and F is a weak metallic ferromagnet. In our work we study the static magnetic flux distributions in long Josephson junctions taking into account the higher harmonics in the Fourier-decomposition of the Josephson current. Stability analysis …
We study the effect of oxygen-doping on the critical temperature, Tc, the vortex matter phase diagram and the nature of the coupling mechanism between the Cu-O layers in the three-layer Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+delta (Bi-2223) compound. Contrary to previous reports, in the overdoped (OD) regime we do find a variation of Tc with increasing the oxygen partial-pressure of the post-annealing treatment. This variation is less significant than in the bi-layer parental compound Bi-2212 and does not follow the universal Tc vs.delta relation. Magnetic measurements reveal that increasing delta enlarges the field…
We show that disruption of charge-density-wave (stripe) order by charge transfer excitation, enhances the superconducting phase rigidity in La_{1.885}Ba_{0.115}CuO_4 (LBCO). Time-Resolved Resonant Soft X-Ray Diffraction demonstrates that charge order melting is prompt following near-infrared photoexcitation whereas the crystal structure remains intact for moderate fluences. THz time-domain spectroscopy reveals that, for the first 2 ps following photoexcitation, a new Josephson Plasma Resonance edge, at higher frequency with respect to the equilibrium edge, is induced indicating enhanced superc…
We report measurements of the critical current vs. Co thickness in Nb/Cu/Co/Ru/Co/Cu/Nb Josephson junctions, where the inner Co/Ru/Co trilayer is a "synthetic antiferromagnet" with the magnetizations of the two Co layers coupled antiparallel to each other via the 0.6 nm-thick Ru layer. Due to the antiparallel magnetization alignment, the net intrinsic magnetic flux in the junction is nearly zero, and such junctions exhibit excellent Fraunhofer patterns in the critical current vs. applied magnetic field, even with total Co thicknesses as large as 23 nm. There are no apparent oscillations in the…
Spectra and spin structures of Andreev interface states and the Josephson current are investigated theoretically in junctions between clean superconductors (SC) with ordered interlayers. The Josephson current through the ferromagnet-insulator-ferromagnet interlayer can exhibit a nonmonotonic dependence on the misorientation angle. The characteristic behavior takes place if the pi state is the equilibrium state of the junction in the particular case of parallel magnetizations. We find a novel channel of quasiparticle reflection (Q reflection) from the simplest two-sublattice antiferromagnet (AF…
We report on an investigation of the redistribution of interlayer coherence in the trilayer cuprate Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10. The experiment is performed under the same apical-oxygen phonon excitation discussed in the past for the bilayer cuprate YBa2Cu3O6.5. In Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10, we observe a similar spectral weight loss at the transverse plasma mode resonance seen in YBa2Cu3O6.5. However, this feature is not accompanied by light-enhanced interlayer coherence that was seen in YBa2Cu3O6+x, for which the transverse plasma mode is observed at equilibrium even in the normal state. These new observations off…
The Josephson current is investigated in a superconducting graphene bilayer where pristine graphene sheets can make in-plane or out-of-plane displacements with respect to each other. The superconductivity can be of an intrinsic nature, or due to a proximity effect. The results demonstrate that the supercurrent responds qualitatively differently to relative displacement if the superconductivity is due to either intralayer or interlayer spin-singlet electron-electron pairing, thus providing a tool to distinguish between the two mechanisms. Specifically, both the AA and AB stacking orders are stu…
It has been suggested by theoretical works that equal spin-triplet Cooper pairs can be generated in Josephson junctions containing both a ferromagnet and a source of spin-orbit coupling. Our recent experimental work suggested that spin-triplet Cooper pairs were not generated by a Pt spin-orbit coupling layer when the ferromagnetic weak link had entirely in-plane anisotropy (N. Satchell and N.O. Birge, Phys. Rev. B 97, 214509 (2018)). Here, we revisit the experiment using Pt again as a source for spin-orbit coupling and a [Co(0.4 nm)/Ni(0.4 nm)]$_{\times8}$/Co(0.4 nm) ferromagnetic weak link wi…
Various types of the current-phase relation I(phi) in superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor (SFS) point contacts and planar double-barrier junctions are studied within the quasiclassical theory in the limit of thin diffusive ferromagnetic interlayers. The physical mechanisms leading to highly nontrivial I(phi) dependence are identified by studying the spectral supercurrent density. These mechanisms are also responsible for the 0-pi transition in SFS Josephson junctions.
We investigate the charge transport property of superconductor (S) /normal metal (N) / ferromagnet insulator (FI) /(normal metal) N' and S/N/FI/N'/S Josephson junctions on a three-dimensional topological insulator surface. We find asymmetric local density of states (LDOSs) in a S/N/FI/N' junction and show that the finite length of the N interlayer gives rise to subgap resonant spikes in the differential conductance and LDOSs. In a S/N/FI/N'/S junction, the Josephson current shows a non-sinusoidal current-phase relation and the N (or N') interlayer decreases the magnitude of the critical curren…
We show that in electron-hole bilayers with excitonic order arising from conduction and valence bands formed by atomic orbitals that have different parities, nonzero interlayer tunneling leads to a second order Josephson effect. This means the interlayer electrical current is related to the phase of the excitonic order parameter as $J = J_c \sin2θ$ instead of $J = J_c \sin θ$, and that the system has two degenerate ground states at $θ=0, π$ that can be switched by an interlayer voltage pulse. When generalized to a three dimensional stack of alternating electron-hole planes or a two dimensional…

We report on the fabrication of Nb/AlO_x/Pd_{0.82}Ni_{0.18}/Nb superconductor/insulator/ferromagnetic metal/superconductor (SIFS) Josephson junctions with high critical current densities, large normal resistance times area products, high quality factors, and very good spatial uniformity. For these junctions a transition from 0- to π-coupling is observed for a thickness d_F ~ 6 nm of the ferromagnetic Pd_{0.82}Ni_{0.18} interlayer. The magnetic field dependence of the π-coupled junctions demonstrates good spatial homogeneity of the tunneling barrier and ferromagnetic interlayer. Magnetic charac…
IIt is shown that in a bilayer excitonic superconductor dissipative losses emerge under transmission of the current from the source to the load. These losses are proportional to the square of the interlayer tunneling amplitude and independent on the value of the input current. The case of quantum Hall bilayer is considered. The bilayer may work as a transmission line if the input current exceeds certain critical value. The input current higher than critical one induces Josephson vortices in the bilayer. The difference of electrochemical potentials is required to feed the load and it forces Jos…
Observed violations of the $c$-axis optical sum rule can give important information on deviations from in-plane Fermi liquid behavior and on the nature of interlayer coupling between adjacent copper oxide planes. Application of a magnetic field perpendicular to these planes is another way to probe in-plane dynamics. We find that the optical sum rule is considerably modified in the presence of the $c$-axis magnetic field. Interlayer correlation of pancake vortices is involved in the sum rule modification; however, details of the vortex distribution in the plane are less important.
Non-linear interactions between collective modes play a definitive role in far out of equilibrium dynamics of strongly correlated electron systems. Understanding and utilizing these interactions is crucial to photo-control of quantum many-body states. One of the most surprising examples of strong mode coupling is the interaction between apical oxygen phonons and Josephson plasmons in bilayer YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ superconductors. Experiments by Hu et al (2014). and Kaiser et al. (2014) showed that below Tc, photo-excitation of phonons leads to enhancement and frequency shifts of Josephson pla…
In this work, we generalize the theory of localized surface plasmons to the case of high-Tc cuprate superconductors, spatially confined in the form of small spherical particles. At variance from ordinary metals, cuprate superconductors are characterized by a low-energy bulk excitation known as the Josephson plasma wave (JPW), arising from interlayer tunneling of the condensate along the c-axis. The effect of the JPW is revealed in a characteristic spectrum of surface excitations, which we call Josephson surface plasmons. Our results, which apply to any material with a strongly anisotropic elec…
The Josephson current through a long s-wave superconductor/weak ferromagnet/s-wave superconductor weak link is studied theoretically in the regime of nonequilibrium spin-dependent occupation of electron states in the ferromagnetic intelayer. While under the considered nonequilibrium condition the standard supercurrent, carried by the singlet part of current-carrying density of states, is not modified, the additional supercurrent flowing via the triplet part of the current-carrying density of states appears. Depending on voltage, controlling the particular form of spin-dependent nonequilibrium …
The review is devoted to the fundamental aspects and characteristic features of the magnetoelectric effects, reported in the literature on Josephson junctions (JJs). The main focus of the review is on the manifestations of the direct and inverse magnetoelectric effects in various types of Josephson systems. They provide a coupling of the magnetization in superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor JJs to the Josephson current. The direct magnetoelectric effect is a driving force of spin torques acting on the ferromagnet inside the JJ. Therefore it is of key importance for the electrical control …
We investigate Magnetic Josephson Junction (MJJ) - a superconducting device with ferromagnetic barrier for a scalable high-density cryogenic memory compatible with energy-efficient single flux quantum (SFQ) circuits. The superconductor-insulator-superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor (SIS'FS) MJJs are analyzed both experimentally and theoretically. We found that the properties of SIS'FS junctions fall into two distinct classes based on the thickness of S' layer. We fabricate Nb-Al/AlOx-Nb-PdFe-Nb SIS'FS MJJs using a co-processing approach with a combination of HYPRES and ISSP fabrication pr…
We report the observation of a current-phase relation dominated by the second Josephson harmonic in superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor junctions. The exotic current-phase relation is realized in the vicinity of a temperature-controlled 0-to-$π$ junction transition, at which the first Josephson harmonic vanishes. Direct current-phase relation measurements, as well as Josephson interferometry, non-vanishing supercurrent and half-integer Shapiro steps at the 0-$π$ transition self-consistently point to an intrinsic second harmonic term, making it possible to rule out common alternative orig…
One of the consequences of Cooper pairs having a finite momentum in the interlayer of a Josephson junction, is $π$-junction behavior. The finite momentum can either be due to an exchange field in ferromagnetic Josephson junctions, or due to the Zeeman effect. Here, we report the observation of Zeeman effect induced 0-$π$ transitions in Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$, 3D Dirac semimetal-based Josephson junctions. The large g-factor of the Zeeman effect from a magnetic field applied in the plane of the junction allows tuning of the Josephson junctions from 0- to $π$- regimes. This is revealed by sign changes …
Huang's experiment [Phys. Rev. Lett. $\bf 109$, 156802 (2012)] found, in the quantum Hall bilayer of the Corbino geometry, the interlayer tunneling currents at two edges are coupled to each other and one of two tunneling currents is referred to as the compensating current of the other. Our another work[arXiv:2006.15329] has explained this exotic coupling phenomenon as a result of excitonic Josephson effect induced by interlayer tunneling current. In this paper, we study the same setup -- excitonic Josephson junction -- but in the weak Josephson coupling regime, which occurs for large junction …
We theoretically show that terahertz pulses with controlled amplitude and frequency can be used to switch between stable transport modes in layered superconductors, modelled as stacks of Josephson junctions. We find pulse shapes that deterministically switch the transport mode between superconducting, resistive and solitonic states. We develop a simple model that explains the switching mechanism as a destablization of the centre of mass excitation of the Josephson phase, made possible by the highly non-linear nature of the light-matter coupling.
Magnetotransport measurements were done on $\Nb/\Al_2Ø_3/\Cu/\Ni/\Nb$ superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson tunnel junctions. Depending on ferromagnetic $\Ni$ interlayer thickness and geometry the standard (1d) magnetic field dependence of critical current deviates from the text-book model for Josephson junctions. The results are qualitatively explained by a short Josephson junction model based on anisotropy and 2d remanent magnetization.
Strong dependence of the Josephson energy on the magnetization orientation in Josephson junctions with ferromagnetic interlayers and spin-orbit coupling opens a way to control magnetization by Josephson current or Josephson phase. Here we investigate the perspectives of magnetization control in superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor (S/F/S) Josephson junctions on the surface of a 3D topological insulator hosting Dirac quasiparticles. Due to the spin-momentum locking of these Dirac quasiparticles a strong dependence of the Josephson current-phase relation on the magnetization orientation is …
A more extended low density region of coexisting uniform antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity has been reported in multilayer cuprates, when compared to single or bilayer cuprates. This coexistence could be due to the enhanced screening of random potential modulations in inner layers or to the interlayer Heisenberg and Josephson couplings. A theoretical analysis using a renormalized mean field theory, favors the former explanation. The potential for an improved determination of the antiferromagnetic and superconducting order parameters in an ideal single layer from zero field NMR an…
