We study the effect of oxygen-doping on the critical temperature, Tc, the vortex matter phase diagram and the nature of the coupling mechanism between the Cu-O layers in the three-layer Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+delta (Bi-2223) compound. Contrary to previous reports, in the overdoped (OD) regime we do find a variation of Tc with increasing the oxygen partial-pressure of the post-annealing treatment. This variation is less significant than in the bi-layer parental compound Bi-2212 and does not follow the universal Tc vs.delta relation. Magnetic measurements reveal that increasing delta enlarges the field and temperature stability of the Bragg glass phase. These findings imply that the interlayer coupling between Cu-O layers enhances with delta. The anisotropy parameter estimated from directional first-penetration field measurements monotonously decreases from 50 in the underdoped (UD) to 15 in the OD regimes. However, the in-plane penetration depth presents a boomerang-like behaviour with $δ$, reaching its minimum value close to optimal doping. These two facts lead to a crossover from a Josephson(OD) to electromagnetic(UD)-dominated coupling of adjacent Cu-O layers in the vicinity of optimal doping.
We comment on the work by Moler, et al., [Science 279, 1193 (1998)] concerning determination of the c-axis penetration depth in the single-layer compound Tl-2201 through measuring the magnetic flux due to isolated interlayer Josephson vortices.
The supercurrent transport in metallic Josephson tunnel junctions with an additional interlayer made up by chromium, being an itinerant antiferromagnet, was studied. Uniform Josephson coupling was observed as a function of the magnetic field. The supercurrent shows a weak dependence on the interlayer thickness for thin chromium layers and decays exponentially for thicker films. The diffusion constant and the coherence length in the antiferromagnet were estimated. The antiferromagnetic state of the barrier was indirectly verified using reference samples. Our results are compared to macroscopic …
The Josephson effect can be regarded as a striking manifestation of exciton condensation. It has been suggested to tune the condensate phase of bilayer excitons by applying interlayer tunneling current. A poorly-understood phenomenon observed by Huang {\it et al} [Phys. Rev. Lett. $\bf 109$, 156802 (2012)] demonstrates that the critical values of the interlayer tunneling current at either edge can be controlled by passing a second interlayer tunneling current at the other edge. We successfully attribute this novel coupling to excitonic Josephson effect induced by tunneling-current generated re…
We calculate the dependence of the interlayer quasiparticle conductivity, $σ_q$, in a Josephson coupled d-wave superconductor on the magnetic field B||c and the temperature T. We consider a clean superconductor with resonant impurity scattering and a dominant coherent interlayer tunneling. When pancake vortices in adjacent layers are weakly correlated at low T the conductivity increases sharply with B before reaching an extended region of slow linear growth, while at high T it initially decreases and then reaches the same linear regime. For correlated pancakes $σ_q$ increases much more strongl…
The ground state of interlayer Josephson vortex systems is investigated on the basis of a simplified Lawrence-Doniach model in which spatial dependence of the gauge field and the amplitude of superconducting order parameter is not taken into account. Energy landscape is drawn with respect to the in-plane field, the period of insulating layers including Josephson vortices, and the shift from the aligned vortex lattice. The energy landscape has a multi-valley structure and ground-state configurations correspond to bifurcation points of the valleys. In the high-field region, the shear modulus bec…
We investigate superconductor/insulator/ferromagnet/superconductor (SIFS) tunnel Josephson junctions in the dirty limit, using the quasiclassical theory. We formulate a quantitative model describing the oscillations of critical current as a function of thickness of the ferromagnetic layer and use this model to fit recent experimental data. We also calculate quantitatively the density of states (DOS) in this type of junctions and compare DOS oscillations with those of the critical current.
We study the Josephson plasma resonance (JPR) in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+y}$ (BSCCO) with spatially dependent interlayer-phase coherence (IPC). The half-irradiated BSCCO (HI-BSCCO), in which columnar defects are introduced only in a half of the sample, shows several resonance peaks, which are not simple superposition of the peaks in irradiated- and pristine-parts. JPR in HI-BSCCO changes its character from irradiated- to pristine-type at a crossover frequency ($ω_{cr}$). We demonstrate that the one-dimensional \LSGE, which takes into account the spatial dependence of IPC, can reproduce most …
The dependence of the critical current density j_c on the ferromagnetic interlayer thickness d_F was determined for Nb/Al_2O_3/Cu/Ni/Nb Josephson tunnel junctions with ferromagnetic \Ni interlayer from very thin film thicknesses (\sim 1 nm) upwards and classified into F-layer thickness regimes showing a dead magnetic layer, exchange, exchange + anisotropy and total suppression of j_c. The Josephson coupling changes from 0 to pi as function of d_F, and -very close to the crossover thickness- as function of temperature. The strong suppression of the supercurrent in comparison to non-magnetic \Nb…
Josephson plasma frequency is computed within the interlayer tunneling theory and compared against the experimental results in Tl_2Ba_2CuO_y and La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4. It is shown that the theoretical estimates are fully consistent with the recent experiments.
We find systematic signatures suggesting a different superconducting nature for a triple-layered cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ with respect to a double-layer through the properties of intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs). Our measurements on the current-voltage characteristics reveal that the $c$-axis maximum Josephson current density is sensitive to the superfluid density in outer planes while the critical temperature and the superconducting gap remain unaffected. Switching dynamics of stacked IJJs exhibit that the fluctuation in gauge-invariant phase difference of an IJJ implies…
Motivated by recent pump-probe experiments indicating enhanced coherent $c$-axis transport in underdoped YBCO, we study Josephson junctions periodically driven by optical pulses. We propose a mechanism for this observation by demonstrating that a parametrically driven Josephson junction shows an enhanced imaginary part of the low-frequency conductivity when the driving frequency is above the plasma frequency, implying an effectively enhanced Josephson coupling. We generalize this analysis to a bilayer system of Josephson junctions modeling YBCO. Again, the Josephson coupling is enhanced when t…
A critical value in the product of the anisotropy parameter and the magnetic field is observed in interlayer Josephson-vortex systems by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. Below/above this critical value the thermodynamic phase transition between the normal and the superconducting states upon temperature sweeping is first/second order. The origin is the intrinsic pinning effect of the layered structure of high-Tc superconductors.
We show that the dc Josephson current through superconductor-antiferromagnet-superconductor (S/AF/S) junctions manifests a remarkable atomic scale dependence on the interlayer thickness. At low temperatures the junction is either a 0- or pi-junction depending on whether the AF interlayer consists of an even or odd number of atomic layers. This is associated with different symmetries of the AF interlayers in the two cases. In the junction with odd AF interlayers an additional pi-0 transition can take place as a function of temperature. This originates from the interplay of spin-split Andreev bo…
We calculate the dc supercurrent through a Josephson tunnel junction consisting of an antiferromagnetic (AF) interlayer sandwiched between two d-wave superconductors (d). Such d/AF/d junctions exhibit a rich dependence of the Josephson current on the interlayer parameters, including the possibility of 0-pi transitions with varying temperature or interlayer thickness. Furthermore, we study d/I/d junctions when the dSC leads include subdominant magnetic correlations. In this case induced magnetism near the interface can strongly diminish the critical current for 110 oriented junctions whereas no…
The lengthscale over which supercurrent from conventional BCS, $s$-wave, superconductors ($S$) can penetrate an adjacent ferromagnetic ($F$) layer depends on the ability to convert singlet Cooper pairs into triplet Cooper pairs. Spin aligned triplet Cooper pairs are not dephased by the ferromagnetic exchange interaction, and can thus penetrate an $F$ layer over much longer distances than singlet Cooper pairs. These triplet Cooper pairs carry a dissipationless spin current and are the fundamental building block for the fledgling field of superspintronics. Singlet-triplet conversion by inhomogen…
We measured the Josephson vortex flow resistance as a function of magnetic field applied parallel to the ab-planes using annealed Y1Ba2Cu3Ox intrinsic Josephson junctions having high anisotropy (around 40) by oxygen content reduction. Periodic oscillations were observed in magnetic fields above 45-58 kOe, corresponding to dense-dilute boundary for Josephson vortex lattice. The observed period of oscillations, agrees well with the increase of one fluxon per two junctions ($H_{p}$\textit{=$Φ$}$_{0}$\textit{/2Ls}), may correspond to formation of a triangular lattice of Josephson vortices as has b…
We consider dynamics of Josephson vortex lattice in layered superconductors with magnetic, charge (electrostatic) and charge-imbalance (quasiparticle) interactions between interlayer Josephson junctions taken into account. The macroscopic dynamical equations for interlayer Josephson phase differences, intralayer charge and electron-hole imbalance are obtained and used for numerical simulations. Different transformations of the vortex lattice structure are observed. It is shown that the additional dissipation due to the charge imbalance relaxation leads to the stability of triangular lattice.
We report measurements of the critical current vs. Co thickness in Nb/Cu/Co/Ru/Co/Cu/Nb Josephson junctions, where the inner Co/Ru/Co trilayer is a "synthetic antiferromagnet" with the magnetizations of the two Co layers coupled antiparallel to each other via the 0.6 nm-thick Ru layer. Due to the antiparallel magnetization alignment, the net intrinsic magnetic flux in the junction is nearly zero, and such junctions exhibit excellent Fraunhofer patterns in the critical current vs. applied magnetic field, even with total Co thicknesses as large as 23 nm. There are no apparent oscillations in the…
We report on an investigation of the redistribution of interlayer coherence in the trilayer cuprate Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10. The experiment is performed under the same apical-oxygen phonon excitation discussed in the past for the bilayer cuprate YBa2Cu3O6.5. In Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10, we observe a similar spectral weight loss at the transverse plasma mode resonance seen in YBa2Cu3O6.5. However, this feature is not accompanied by light-enhanced interlayer coherence that was seen in YBa2Cu3O6+x, for which the transverse plasma mode is observed at equilibrium even in the normal state. These new observations off…
It has been suggested by theoretical works that equal spin-triplet Cooper pairs can be generated in Josephson junctions containing both a ferromagnet and a source of spin-orbit coupling. Our recent experimental work suggested that spin-triplet Cooper pairs were not generated by a Pt spin-orbit coupling layer when the ferromagnetic weak link had entirely in-plane anisotropy (N. Satchell and N.O. Birge, Phys. Rev. B 97, 214509 (2018)). Here, we revisit the experiment using Pt again as a source for spin-orbit coupling and a [Co(0.4 nm)/Ni(0.4 nm)]$_{\times8}$/Co(0.4 nm) ferromagnetic weak link wi…
We investigate the charge transport property of superconductor (S) /normal metal (N) / ferromagnet insulator (FI) /(normal metal) N' and S/N/FI/N'/S Josephson junctions on a three-dimensional topological insulator surface. We find asymmetric local density of states (LDOSs) in a S/N/FI/N' junction and show that the finite length of the N interlayer gives rise to subgap resonant spikes in the differential conductance and LDOSs. In a S/N/FI/N'/S junction, the Josephson current shows a non-sinusoidal current-phase relation and the N (or N') interlayer decreases the magnitude of the critical curren…
The anomalous ground state phase shift in S/AF/S Josephson junctions in the presence of the Rashba SO-coupling is predicted and numerically investigated. It is found to be a consequence of the uncompensated magnetic moment at the S/AF interfaces. The anomalous phase shift exhibits a strong dependence on the value of the SO-coupling and the sublattice magnetization with the simultaneous existence of stable and metastable branches. It depends strongly on the orientation of the Neel vector with respect to the S/AF interfaces via the dependence on the orientation of the interface uncompensated mag…
We report on observations of thickness dependent Josephson coupling and multiple Andreev reflections (MAR) in vertically stacked molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) - molybdenum rhenium (MoRe) Josephson junctions. MoRe, a chemically inert superconductor, allows for oxide free fabrication of high transparency vertical MoS2 devices. Single and bilayer MoS2 junctions display relatively large critical currents (up to 2.5 uA) and the appearance of sub-gap structure given by MAR. In three and four layer thick devices we observe orders of magnitude lower critical currents (sub-nA) and reduced quasiparticle g…
Observed violations of the $c$-axis optical sum rule can give important information on deviations from in-plane Fermi liquid behavior and on the nature of interlayer coupling between adjacent copper oxide planes. Application of a magnetic field perpendicular to these planes is another way to probe in-plane dynamics. We find that the optical sum rule is considerably modified in the presence of the $c$-axis magnetic field. Interlayer correlation of pancake vortices is involved in the sum rule modification; however, details of the vortex distribution in the plane are less important.
We present a quantitative study of the current-voltage characteristics (CVC) of SFIFS Josephson junctions (S denotes bulk superconductor, F - metallic ferromagnet, I - insulating barrier) with weak ferromagnetic interlayers in the diffusive limit. The problem is solved in the framework of the nonlinear Usadel equations. We consider the case of a strong tunnel barrier such that the left SF and the right FS bilayers are decoupled. We calculate the density of states (DOS) in SF bilayers using a self-consistent numerical method. Then we obtain the CVC of corresponding SFIFS junctions, and discuss …
Non-linear interactions between collective modes play a definitive role in far out of equilibrium dynamics of strongly correlated electron systems. Understanding and utilizing these interactions is crucial to photo-control of quantum many-body states. One of the most surprising examples of strong mode coupling is the interaction between apical oxygen phonons and Josephson plasmons in bilayer YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ superconductors. Experiments by Hu et al (2014). and Kaiser et al. (2014) showed that below Tc, photo-excitation of phonons leads to enhancement and frequency shifts of Josephson pla…
We investigate Magnetic Josephson Junction (MJJ) - a superconducting device with ferromagnetic barrier for a scalable high-density cryogenic memory compatible with energy-efficient single flux quantum (SFQ) circuits. The superconductor-insulator-superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor (SIS'FS) MJJs are analyzed both experimentally and theoretically. We found that the properties of SIS'FS junctions fall into two distinct classes based on the thickness of S' layer. We fabricate Nb-Al/AlOx-Nb-PdFe-Nb SIS'FS MJJs using a co-processing approach with a combination of HYPRES and ISSP fabrication pr…
Huang's experiment [Phys. Rev. Lett. $\bf 109$, 156802 (2012)] found, in the quantum Hall bilayer of the Corbino geometry, the interlayer tunneling currents at two edges are coupled to each other and one of two tunneling currents is referred to as the compensating current of the other. Our another work[arXiv:2006.15329] has explained this exotic coupling phenomenon as a result of excitonic Josephson effect induced by interlayer tunneling current. In this paper, we study the same setup -- excitonic Josephson junction -- but in the weak Josephson coupling regime, which occurs for large junction …
We show that disruption of charge-density-wave (stripe) order by charge transfer excitation, enhances the superconducting phase rigidity in La_{1.885}Ba_{0.115}CuO_4 (LBCO). Time-Resolved Resonant Soft X-Ray Diffraction demonstrates that charge order melting is prompt following near-infrared photoexcitation whereas the crystal structure remains intact for moderate fluences. THz time-domain spectroscopy reveals that, for the first 2 ps following photoexcitation, a new Josephson Plasma Resonance edge, at higher frequency with respect to the equilibrium edge, is induced indicating enhanced superc…
Using a high-sensitivity cavity perturbation technique (40 to 180 GHz), we have probed the angle dependent interlayer magneto-electrodynamic response within the vortex state of the extreme two-dimensional organic superconductor k-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2. A previously reported Josephson plasma resonance [M. Mola et al., Phys. Rev. B 62, 5965 (2000)] exhibits a dramatic re-entrant behavior for fields very close (<1 degree) to alignment with the layers. In this same narrow angle range, a new resonant mode develops which appears to be associated with the non-equilibrium critical state. Fits to the ang…
Recent pump-probe experiments reported an enhancement of superconducting transport along the $c$-axis of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ (YBCO), induced by a mid-infrared optical pump pulse tuned to a specific lattice vibration. To understand this transient non-equilibrium state, we develop a pump-probe formalism for a stack of Josephson junctions, and we consider the tunneling strengths in presence of modulation with an ultrashort optical pulse. We demonstrate that a transient enhancement of the Josephson coupling can be obtained for pulsed excitation and that this can be even larger than i…
Vortex matter phases and phase transitions are investigated by means of Josephson plasma resonance in under-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ single crystals in a microwave frequency range between 19 and 70 GHz. Accompanied by the vortex lattice melting transition, a jump of the interlayer phase coherence extracted from the field dependence of the plasma frequency was observed. In the solid phase, the interlayer coherence little depends on field at a temperature region well below $T_c$ while it gradually decreases as field increases toward the melting line up to just below $T_c$. As a result…
We calculate the current phase relation of a planar Josephson junction with a ferromagnetic weak link located on top of a thin normal metal film. Following experimental observations we assume transparent superconductor-ferromagnet interfaces. This provides the best interlayer coupling and a low suppression of the superconducting correlations penetrating from the superconducting electrodes into the ferromagnetic layer. We show that this Josephson junction is a promising candidate for an experimental ϕ junction realization.
A microwave cavity perturbation technique is used to probe the interlayer electrodynamics within the vortex state of the organic superconductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2. A Josephson plasma mode is observed which is extremely sensitive to correlations in the locations of vortices in adjacent layers and may, therefore, be used to gauge collective effects between vortices and crystal pinning sites in the title compound. Our previous investigations [M. M. Mola et al., Phys. Rev. B 62 (2000) 5965] revealed a transformation from a correlated quasi-two-dimensional pinned vortex phase, to either a de…
We theoretically show that terahertz pulses with controlled amplitude and frequency can be used to switch between stable transport modes in layered superconductors, modelled as stacks of Josephson junctions. We find pulse shapes that deterministically switch the transport mode between superconducting, resistive and solitonic states. We develop a simple model that explains the switching mechanism as a destablization of the centre of mass excitation of the Josephson phase, made possible by the highly non-linear nature of the light-matter coupling.
A more extended low density region of coexisting uniform antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity has been reported in multilayer cuprates, when compared to single or bilayer cuprates. This coexistence could be due to the enhanced screening of random potential modulations in inner layers or to the interlayer Heisenberg and Josephson couplings. A theoretical analysis using a renormalized mean field theory, favors the former explanation. The potential for an improved determination of the antiferromagnetic and superconducting order parameters in an ideal single layer from zero field NMR an…
We present a quantitative study of the current-voltage characteristics (CVC) of diffusive superconductor/ insulator/ ferromagnet/ superconductor (SIFS) tunnel Josephson junctions. In order to obtain the CVC we calculate the density of states (DOS) in the F/S bilayer for arbitrary length of the ferromagnetic layer, using quasiclassical theory. For a ferromagnetic layer thickness larger than the characteristic penetration depth of the superconducting condensate into the F layer, we find an analytical expression which agrees with the DOS obtained from a self-consistent numerical method. We discus…
Static and dynamic transport measurements on stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta single crystals, near to optimal doping, are presented. The zero bias minimum in dynamic conductance is consistent with a normal state pseudo-gap. At Tc, a critical current develops simultaneously with new features consistent with a gap in the superconducting density states at an already well-established energy. The lack of thermal broadening and the small scale of the features force us to conclude a high degree of coherent interlayer tunneling in both the superconducting and normal stat…
The Josephson current is investigated in a superconducting graphene bilayer where pristine graphene sheets can make in-plane or out-of-plane displacements with respect to each other. The superconductivity can be of an intrinsic nature, or due to a proximity effect. The results demonstrate that the supercurrent responds qualitatively differently to relative displacement if the superconductivity is due to either intralayer or interlayer spin-singlet electron-electron pairing, thus providing a tool to distinguish between the two mechanisms. Specifically, both the AA and AB stacking orders are stu…
From study of the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii (KTB) transition in the superfluid density, n_s(T), of ultrathin c-axis oriented YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ} (YBCO) films, we find that interlayer coupling is unexpectedly strong. The KTB transition occurs at a high temperature, as if the films were isotropic rather than quasi-two-dimensional. This result agrees with a comparison of the superfluid density of YBCO with Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8} and with numerical simulations of Josephson junction arrays, and challenges the thermal phase fluctuation interpretation of critical behavior near T_c in YBCO.

The Josephson current flowing through weak links containing ferromagnetic elements is studied theoretically under the condition that the quasiparticle distribution over energy states in the interlayer is spin-dependent. It is shown that the interplay between the spin-dependent quasiparticle distribution and the triplet superconducting correlations induced by the proximity effect between the superconducting leads and ferromagnetic elements of the interlayer, leads to the appearence of an additional contribution to the Josephson current. This additional contribution $j_t$ can be extracted from t…
Motivated by recent resistance data in high $T_c$ superconductors in fields {\it parallel} to the CuO layers, we address two issues on the Josephson-vortex phase diagram, the appearances of structural transitions on the observed first order transition (FOT) curve in intermediate fields and of a lower critical point of the FOT line. It is found that some rotated pinned solids are more stable than the ordinary rhombic pinned solids with vacant interlayer spacings and that, due to the vertical portion in higher fields of the FOT line, the FOT tends to be destroyed by creating a lower critical poi…
For a two layer system in a weak coupling BCS formalism any interlayer interaction, regardless of its sign, enhances the critical temperature. The sign has an effect upon the relative phase of the order parameter in each of the two planes but not upon its magnitude. When one of the planes has a dispersion consistent with CuO chains and no intrinsic pairing interaction there is both an enhancement of the critical temperature and an s+d mixing in both layers as the interlayer interaction is increased. The magnetic penetration depth, c-axis Josephson tunneling, density of states and Knight shift …
We theoretically investigate an opportunity to implement a source of highly spin-polarized ac current on the basis of superconductor/weak ferromagnet/superconductor (SFS) voltage-biased junction in the regime of essential proximity effect and calculate the current flowing through the probe electrode tunnel coupled to the ferromagnetic interlayer region. It is shown that while the polarization of the dc current component is generally small in case of weak exchange field of the ferromagnet, there is an ac component of the current in the system. This ac current is highly spin-polarized and entire…
One of the key problems facing superconducting qubits and other Josephson junction devices is the decohering effects of bi-stable material defects. Although a variety of phenomenological models exist, the true microscopic origin of these defects remains elusive. For the first time we show that these defects may arise from delocalisation of the atomic position of the oxygen in the oxide forming the Josephson junction barrier. Using a microscopic model, we compute experimentally observable parameters for phase qubits. Such defects are charge neutral but have non-zero response to both applied ele…
A subharmonic structure in Josephson junctions appears due to Andreev reflections within the junction. Here we report on experimental observation of a subharmonic half-gap singularity in interlayer tunneling characteristics of a layered high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d. The singularity is most pronounced in optimally doped crystals and vanishes with decreasing doping. It indicates existence of non-vanishing electronic density of states and certain metallic properties in the intermediate BiO layers, which grows stronger with increasing doping. This provides an additional coherent…
We obtain self-consistent macroscopic equations describing interlayer Josephson effect and intralayer disequilibrium in one-dimensional array of Josephson coupled layers. We show that ``nonequilibrium coupling'' can lead to effective spatial and time synchronization and formation of coherent dynamic resistive state (collective Josephson effect) in Nb-AlO-Nb stacked junctions and HTSC (intrinsic Josephson effect). We propose it to be the origin of collective switching phenomena observed in PbBiSrCaCuO.
We review some previous studies concerning the intra-bilayer Josephson plasmons and present new ellipsometric data of the c-axis infrared response of almost optimally doped Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8}. The c-axis conductivity of this compound exhibits the same kind of anomalies as that of underdoped YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-delta}. We analyze these anomalies in detail and show that they can be explained within a model involving the intra-bilayer Josephson effect and variations of the electric field inside the unit cell. The Josephson coupling energies of different bilayer compounds obtained from the op…
We show that in electron-hole bilayers with excitonic order arising from conduction and valence bands formed by atomic orbitals that have different parities, nonzero interlayer tunneling leads to a second order Josephson effect. This means the interlayer electrical current is related to the phase of the excitonic order parameter as $J = J_c \sin2θ$ instead of $J = J_c \sin θ$, and that the system has two degenerate ground states at $θ=0, π$ that can be switched by an interlayer voltage pulse. When generalized to a three dimensional stack of alternating electron-hole planes or a two dimensional…
Conductivity mechanism in the regime of the intrinsic Josephson effect in layered superconductors with singlet d-wave pairing is studied theoretically. The cases of coherent and incoherent interlayer tunneling of electrons are considered. The theory with coherent tunneling describes main qualitative features of the effect observed in highly anisotropic high-T$_c$ superconductors at voltages smaller than the amplitude of the superconducting gap, mechanism of the resistivity being related to excitations of the quasiparticles via the d-wave gap. At voltages of the order of the gap amplitude and l…
We investigated transient optical responses in an optimally-doped high-Tc superconductor La2-xSrxCuO4 (x=0.15) by using 800-nm optical pump and terahertz probe spectroscopy. With increasing the photoexcitation intensities, the Josephson plasma resonance shows a gradual redshift, indicating the suppression of superconductivity by the photoexcitation. With further increasing the photoexcitation intensities, a new longitudinal mode in the loss function spectrum appears and grows from the high energy side, accompanied by a new transverse mode as manifested in the conductivity spectrum. The observe…
Environmental two-level systems (TLS) have been identified as significant decoherence sources in Josephson junction (JJ) based circuits. For such quantum devices to be functional, the removal or control of the TLS is a necessity. Understanding the microscopic origins of the 'strongly coupled' TLS type is one current path of investigation to that end. The delocalized oxygen model suggests the atomic position of an oxygen atom is spatially delocalized in the oxide forming the JJ barrier. In this report we extend this model from its previous 2+1D construction to a complete 3D description using a …
