We study the peculiarities in current-phase relations (CPR) of the SIsFS junction in the region of $0$ to $π$ transition. These CPR consist of two independent branches corresponding to $0-$ and $π-$ states of the contact. We have found that depending on the transparency of the SIs tunnel barrier the decrease of the s-layer thickness leads to transformation of the CPR shape going in the two possible ways: either one of the branches exists only in discrete intervals of the phase difference $φ$ or both branches are sinusoidal but differ in the magnitude of their critical currents. We demonstrate that the difference can be as large as $10\%$ under maintaining superconductivity in the s layer. An applicability of these phenomena for memory and logic application is discussed.
We study the density of states (DOS) inside superconducting Josephson SIsFS junctions with complex interlayer consisting of a thin superconducting spacer 's' between insulator I and a ferromagnetic metal F. The consideration is focused on the local density of states in the vicinity of a tunnel barrier, and it permits to estimate the current-voltage characteristics in the resistive state of such junctions. We study the influence of the proximity effect and Zeeman splitting on the properties of the system, and we find significant sub-gap regions with non-vanishing DOS. We also find manifestation…
We propose a picture for the magnetic properties of superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) heterostructures based on Nb and permalloy (Py: Fe_{20}Ni_{80}). By measuring the magnetic moment as a function of the temperature in S/F/S trilayers for different thicknesses of the middle F layer, we give evidence of the presence of a magnetic stray field of the F layer. For values of F-layer thickness below a threshold, we establish a correlation between the magnetic measurements of the S/F/S trilayers and the anomalous magnetic dependence of the critical current in S/insulator/thin superconducting film/F/S…

Coherence of superconducting qubits can be improved by implementing designs that protect the parity of Cooper pairs on superconducting islands. Here, we introduce a parity-protected qubit based on voltage-controlled semiconductor nanowire Josephson junctions, taking advantage of the higher harmonic content in the energy-phase relation of few-channel junctions. A symmetric interferometer formed by two such junctions, gate-tuned into balance and frustrated by a half-quantum of applied flux, yields a cos(2ϕ) Josephson element, reflecting coherent transport of pairs of Cooper pairs. We demonstrate…
Topological materials which possess topologically protected surface states have attracted much attention in recent years. In this work, we study the critical current of superconductor/inversion symmetry breaking topological material/superconductor junctions. We found surprisingly that, in topological materials with broken inversion symmetry, the magnitude of the critical Josephson currents $|I^{+}_c(B)|$ at fixed magnetic field $B$ is not the same for critical currents $|I^{-}_c(B)|$ flowing in the opposite direction. Moreover, the critical currents violate the $| I_{c}^{\pm}(B)| = |I_{c}^{\pm…
Weyl nodal loop semimetals (WNLs) host a closed nodal line loop Fermi surface in the bulk, protected zero-energy flat band, or drumhead, surface states, and strong spin-polarization. The large density of states of the drumhead states makes WNL semimetals exceedingly prone to electronic ordering. At the same time, the spin-polarization naively prevents conventional superconductivity due to its spin-singlet nature. Here we show the complete opposite: WNLs are extremely promising materials for superconducting Josephson junctions, entirely due to odd-frequency superconductivity. By sandwiching a W…
The rise of topological phases of matter is strongly connected to their potential to host Majorana bound states, a powerful ingredient in the search for a robust, topologically protected, quantum information processing. In order to produce such states, a method of choice is to induce superconductivity in topological insulators. The engineering of the interplay between superconductivity and the electronic properties of a topological insulator is a challenging task and it is consequently very important to understand the physics of simple superconducting devices such as Josephson junctions, in wh…
The $π$-ring qubit array is described using quasiclassical approaches that are shown to be accurate and give clarity to the complex energy landscape of connected vortex qubits. Using the techniques, large arrays of Josephson junction systems can be designed, including phase shift devices. Herein, connected arrays of loops containing $π$ junctions are described. These techniques are useful for design of quantum computers based on superconducting technologies, hybrid quantum technologies and quantum networks.
Influence of Topological Edge States on the Properties of Al/Bi2Se3/Al Hybrid Josephson Devices
True to their unconventional nature, multi-band alkaline Fe-selenides and, more recently, the heavy-fermion CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ have shown signatures of fully-gapped but sign-changing superconductivity (SC). A two-orbital pairing state, called $sτ_{3}$, with non-trivial matrix structure, was proposed as a candidate able to reconcile the seemingly contradictory properties of these SC's. Motivated by the non-trivial orbital structure of the proposed $sτ_{3}$ state, which has orbital-selective pairing structure, we study prototypical Josephson junctions where at least one of the leads is in a SC s…
We propose a new protected logic qubit called pokemon, which is derived from the 0-$π$ qubit by harnessing one capacitively shunted inductor and two capacitively shunted Josephson junctions embedded in a superconducting loop. Similar to the 0-$π$ qubit, the two basis states of the proposed qubit are separated by a high barrier, but their wave functions are highly localized along both axis directions of the two-dimensional parameter space, instead of the highly localized wave functions along only one axis direction in the 0-$π$ qubit. This makes the pokemon qubit more protected. For instance, t…

We study the thermodynamic properties of topological Josephson junctions using a quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator-based junction as an example. In particular, we propose that phase-dependent measurements of the heat capacity offer an alternative to Josephson-current measurements to demonstrate key topological features. Even in an equilibrium situation, where the fermion parity is not conserved, the heat capacity exhibits a pronounced double peak in its phase dependence as a signature of the protected zero-energy crossing in the Andreev spectrum. This double-peak feature is robust against chan…
Symmetry considerations are key towards our understanding of the fundamental laws of Nature. The presence of a symmetry implies that a physical system is invariant under specific transformations and this invariance may have deep consequences. For instance, symmetry arguments state that a system will remain in its initial state if incentives to actions are equally balanced. Here, we apply this principle to a chain of qubits and show that it is possible to engineer the symmetries of its Hamiltonian in order to keep quantum information intrinsically protected from both relaxation and decoherence.…
Josephson junctions with three or more superconducting leads have been predicted to exhibit topological effects in the presence of few conducting modes within the interstitial normal material. Such behavior, of relevance for topologically-protected quantum bits, would lead to specific transport features measured between terminals, with topological phase transitions occurring as a function of phase and voltage bias. Although conventional, two-terminal Josephson junctions have been studied extensively, multi-terminal devices have received relatively little attention to date. Motivated in part by…
We experimentally study lateral electron transport between two 5~$μ$m spaced superconducting indium leads on a top of magnetic Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$. For the disordered magnetic state of Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ crystal, we only observe the Andreev reflection in the proximity of each of the leads, which is indicative of highly transparent In-Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ interfaces. If the sample is homogeneously magnetized, it demonstrates well-developed anomalous Hall effect state. In this regime we find the Josephson current that takes place even for 5~$μ$m long junctions and shows the unusual magn…
In a standard Josephson junction the current is zero when the phase difference between the superconducting leads is zero. This condition is protected by parity and time-reversal symmetries. However, the combined presence of spin-orbit coupling and magnetic field breaks these symmetries and can lead to a finite supercurrent even when the phase difference is zero. This is the so called anomalous Josephson effect -- the hallmark effect of superconducting spintronics --and can be characterized by the corresponding anomalous phase shift ($ϕ_0$). We report the observation of a tunable anomalous Jose…
Topological transconductance quantization in a four-terminal Josephson junction
Superconducting materials with non-centrosymmetric lattices lacking the space inversion symmetry are known to exhibit a variety of interesting parity-breaking phenomena, including the anomalous Josephson effect. Here we consider a Josephson junction consisting of two non-centrosymmetric superconductors (NCSs) connected by a uniaxial ferromagnet, and demonstrate that it exhibits a direct analog of the Chiral Magnetic Effect observed in Dirac and Weyl semimetals. We propose to use this "Chiral Magnetic Josephson junction" (CMJ junction) as an element of a qubit with a Hamiltonian tunable by the …
We study the Josephson effect in the multiterminal junction of topological superconductors. We use the symmetry-constrained scattering matrix approach to derive band dispersions of emergent sub-gap Andreev bound states in a multidimensional parameter space of superconducting phase differences. We find distinct topologically protected band crossings that serve as monopoles of finite Berry curvature. Particularly, in a four-terminal junction the admixture of $2π$ and $4π$ periodic levels leads to the appearance of finite energy Majorana-Weyl nodes. This topological regime in the junction can be …
