The Hairer-Kelly map has been introduced for establishing a correspondence between geometric and non-geometric rough paths. Recently, a new renormalisation on rough paths has been proposed in (arxiv 1810.12179), built on this map and the Lyons-Victoir extension theorem. In this work, we compare this renormalisation with the existing ones such as BPHZ and the local products renormalisations. We prove that they commute in a certain sense with the Hairer-Kelly map and exhibit an explicit formula in the framework of (arxiv 1810.12179). We also see how the renormalisation behaves in the alternative approach in ( arXiv:1712.01965) for moving from non-geometric to geometric rough paths.
The objective of this work is to compare several approaches to the process of renormalisation in the context of rough differential equations using the substitution bialgebra on rooted trees known from backward error analysis of $B$-series. For this purpose, we present a so-called arborification of the Hoffman--Ihara theory of quasi-shuffle algebra automorphisms. The latter are induced by formal power series, which can be seen to be special cases of the cointeraction of two Hopf algebra structures on rooted forests. In particular, the arborification of Hoffman's exponential map, which defines a…
We demonstrate two examples of stochastic processes whose lifts to geometric rough paths require a renormalisation procedure to obtain convergence in rough path topologies. Our first example involves a physical Brownian motion subject to a magnetic force which dominates over the friction forces in the small mass limit. Our second example involves a lead-lag process of discretised fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H \in (1/4,1/2)$, in which the stochastic area captures the quadratic variation of the process. In both examples, a renormalisation of the second iterated integral is n…
In this article we consider rough differential equations (RDEs) driven by non-geometric rough paths, using the concept of branched rough paths introduced in Gubinelli (2004). We first show that branched rough paths can equivalently be defined as $γ$-Hölder continuous paths in some Lie group, akin to geometric rough paths. We then show that every branched rough path can be encoded in a geometric rough path. More precisely, for every branched rough path $\mathbf{X}$ lying above a path $X$, there exists a geometric rough path $\bar{\mathbf{X}}$ lying above an extended path $\bar X$, such that $\b…
We define a characteristic function for probability measures on the signatures of geometric rough paths. We determine sufficient conditions under which a random variable is uniquely determined by its expected signature, thus partially solving the analogue of the moment problem. We furthermore study analyticity properties of the characteristic function and prove a method of moments for weak convergence of random variables. We apply our results to signature arising from Lévy, Gaussian and Markovian rough paths.
Similar to ordinary differential equations, rough paths and rough differential equations can be formulated in a Banach space setting. For $α\in (1/3,1/2)$, we give criteria for when we can approximate Banach space-valued weakly geometric $α$-rough paths by signatures of curves of bounded variation, given some tuning of the Hölder parameter. We show that these criteria are satisfied for weakly geometric rough paths on Hilbert spaces. As an application, we obtain Wong-Zakai type result for function space valued martingales using the notion of (unbounded) rough drivers.
Starting from the construction of a geometric rough path associated with a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H\in]{1/4}, {1/2}[$ given by Coutin and Qian (2002), we prove a large deviation principle in the space of geometric rough paths, extending classical results on Gaussian processes. As a by-product, geometric rough paths associated to elements of the reproducing kernel Hilbert space of the fractional Brownian motion are obtained and an explicit integral representation is given.
We prove existence of global solutions for differential equations driven by a geometric rough path under the condition that the vector fields have linear growth. We show by an explicit counter-example that the linear growth condition is not sufficient if the driving rough path is not geometric. This settle a long-standing open question in the theory of rough paths. So in the geometric setting we recover the usual sufficient condition for differential equation. The proof rely on a simple mapping of the differential equation from the Euclidean space to a manifold to obtain a rough differential e…

We use simple sub-Riemannian techniques to prove that an arbitrary geometric p-rough path in the sense of Lyons (98) is the limit in sup-norm of a sequence of canonically lifted smooth paths, which are uniformly bounded in p-variation, clarifying the two different definitions of a geometric p-rough path, Lyons (98), Lyons/Qian (02). Our proofs are based on fine estimates in terms of control functions and are sufficiently general to include the case of Hoelder- and modulus-type regularity, Friz/Victoir (03). This allows us to extend a few classical results on Hoelder-spaces (Ciesielski, Musiela…
A solution of the heat equation with a distribution-valued potential is constructed by regularization. When the potential is the generalized derivative of a Hölder continuous function, regularity of the resulting solution is in line with the standard parabolic theory.
We exhibit an explicit natural isomorphism between spaces of branched and geometric rough paths. This provides a multi-level generalisation of the isomorphism of Lejay-Victoir (2006) as well as a canonical version of the Itô-Stratonovich correction formula of Hairer-Kelly (2015). Our construction is elementary and uses the property that the Grossman-Larson algebra is isomorphic to a tensor algebra. We apply this isomorphism to study signatures of branched rough paths. Namely, we show that the signature of a branched rough path is trivial if and only if the path is tree-like, and construct a no…
In this paper we consider rough differential equations on a smooth manifold $\left( M\right) .$ The main result of this paper gives sufficient conditions on the driving vector-fields so that the rough ODE's have global (in time) solutions. The sufficient conditions involve the existence of a complete Riemannian metric $\left( g\right) $ on $M$ such that the covariant derivatives of the driving fields and their commutators to a certain order (depending on the roughness of the driving path) are bounded. Many of the results of this paper are generalizations to manifolds of the fundamental results…
Whenever an Itô-Wentsel type of formula holds for composition of flows of a certain differential dynamics, there exists locally a decomposition of the corresponding flow according to complementary distributions (or foliations, in the case of integrability of these distributions). Many examples have been proved in distinct context of dynamics: Stratonovich stochastic equations, Lévy driven noise, low regularity $α$-Hölder control functions ($ α\in (1/2,1]$), see e.g. [6], [7], [20], [21]. Here we present the proof of this categorical property: we illustrate with the $α$-Hölder rough path, $α\in…
We extend the recently developed rough path theory for Volterra equations from (Harang and Tindel, 2019) to the case of more rough noise and/or more singular Volterra kernels. It was already observed in (Harang and Tindel, 2019) that the Volterra rough path introduced there did not satisfy any geometric relation, similar to that observed in classical rough path theory. Thus, an extension of the theory to more irregular driving signals requires a deeper understanding of the specific algebraic structure arising in the Volterra rough path. Inspired by the elements of "non-geometric rough paths" d…
We consider a geometric rough path associated with a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H\in]{1/4}, {1/2}[$. We give an approximation result in a modulus type distance, up to the second order, by means of a sequence of rough paths lying above elements of the reproducing kernel Hilbert space.
This paper is devoted to the study of numerical approximation schemes for a class of parabolic equations on (0, 1) perturbed by a non-linear rough signal. It is the continuation of [8, 7], where the existence and uniqueness of a solution has been established. The approach combines rough paths methods with standard considerations on discretizing stochastic PDEs. The results apply to a geometric 2-rough path, which covers the case of the multidimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index H \textgreater{} 1/3.
In rough stochastic PDE theory of Hairer type, rough path lifts with respect to the space variable of two-parameter continuous Gaussian processes play a main role. A prominent example of such processes is the solution of the stochastic heat equation under the periodic condition. The main objective of this paper is to show that the law of the spatial lift of this process satisfies a Schilder type large deviation principle on the continuous path space over a geometric rough path space.
In this paper, we obtain the existence of random attractors for a class of evolution equations driven by a geometric fractional Brownian rough path with Hurst index $H\in(\frac{1}{3},\frac{1}{2}]$ and establish the upper semi-continuity of random attractors $\mathcal{A}_η$ for the approximated systems of the evolution equations.
We prove some results, which are used in arXiv:1406.7871, about weakly geometric rough paths that are well-known in finite dimensions, but need proof in the infinite dimensional setting.
We construct a quasi-sure version (in the sense of Malliavin) of geometric rough paths associated with a Gaussian process with long-time memory. As an application we establish a large deviation principle (LDP) for capacities for such Gaussian rough paths. Together with Lyons' universal limit theorem, our results yield immediately the corresponding results for pathwise solutions to stochastic differential equations driven by such Gaussian process in the sense of rough paths. Moreover, our LDP result implies the result of Yoshida on the LDP for capacities over the abstract Wiener space associate…
We show in this note how the machinery of C^1-approximate flows devised in the work "Flows driven by rough paths", and applied there to reprove and extend most of the results on Banach space-valued rough differential equations driven by a finite dimensional rough path, can be used to deal with rough differential equations driven by an infinite dimensional Banach space-valued weak geometric Holder p-rough paths, for any p>2, giving back Lyons' theory in its full force in a simple way.
We study Donsker-Watanabe's delta functions associated with strongly hypoelliptic diffusion processes indexed by a small parameter. They are finite Borel measures on the Wiener space and admit a rough path lift. Our main result is a large deviation principle of Schilder type for the lifted measures on the geometric rough path space as the scale parameter tends to zero. As a corollary, we obtain a large deviation principle conjectured by Takanobu and Watanabe, which is a generalization of a large deviation principle of Freidlin-Wentzell type for pinned diffusion processes.
This paper introduces the path derivatives, in the spirit of Dupire's functional Itô calculus, for the controlled paths in the rough path theory with possibly non-geometric rough paths. The theory allows us to deal with rough integration and rough PDEs in the same manner as standard stochastic calculus. We next study rough PDEs with coefficients depending on the rough path itself, which corresponds to stochastic PDEs with random coefficients. Such coefficients is less regular in the time variable and is not covered in the existing literature. The results are useful for studying viscosity solut…
We construct an explicit transitive free action of a Banach space of Hölder functions on the space of branched rough paths, which yields in particular a bijection between theses two spaces. This endows the space of branched rough paths with the structure of a principal homogeneous space over a Banach space and allows to characterize its automorphisms. The construction is based on the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula, on a constructive version of the Lyons-Victoir extension theorem and on the Hairer-Kelly map, which allows to describe branched rough paths in terms of anisotropic geometric rough…
Lyon's rough paths give an algebraic and analytic framework for Stieltjes integrals in a regime of low regularity where the usual Riemann-Stieltjes integral does not converge. Before we may rigorously define rough paths, we start with the introduction of some basic algebraic terminology. Among them are algebras and coalgebras, two notions which are in some sense dual to each other. As a combination of these notions we obtain bialgebras, and as a special case of them then Hopf algebras, which play a central role in this thesis. After further algebraic preliminaries, we give the examples of Hopf…
We show in this work how the machinery of C^1-approximate flows introduced in our previous work "Flows driven by rough paths", provides a very efficient tool for proving well-posedness results for path-dependent rough differential equations on flows of the form dϕ= V h(dt) + F X(dt), for smooth enough path-dependent vector fields V,F = (V_1,...,V_\ell), any Holder weak geometric p-rough path X and any a-Holder path h, with a+1/p>1.
In this paper, we build the foundation for a theory of controlled rough paths on manifolds. A number of natural candidates for the definition of manifold valued controlled rough paths are developed and shown to be equivalent. The theory of controlled rough one-forms along such a controlled path and their resulting integrals are then defined. This general integration theory does require the introduction of an additional geometric structure on the manifold which we refer to as a "parallelism." The transformation properties of the theory under change of parallelisms is explored. Using these trans…
In this paper, we introduce a new framework for parametrization schemes (PS) in GFD. Using the theory of controlled rough paths, we derive a class of rough geophysical fluid dynamics (RGFD) models as critical points of rough action functionals. These RGFD models characterize Lagrangian trajectories in fluid dynamics as geometric rough paths (GRP) on the manifold of diffeomorphic maps. Three constrained variational approaches are formulated for the derivation of these models. The first is the Clebsch formulation, in which the constraints are imposed as rough advection laws. The second is the Ha…
We establish two results concerning a class of geometric rough paths $\mathbf{X}$ which arise as Markov processes associated to uniformly subelliptic Dirichlet forms. The first is a support theorem for $\mathbf{X}$ in $α$-Hölder rough path topology for all $α\in (0,1/2)$, which answers in the positive a conjecture of Friz-Victoir (2010). The second is a Hörmander-type theorem for the existence of a density of a rough differential equation driven by $\mathbf{X}$, the proof of which is based on analysis of (non-symmetric) Dirichlet forms on manifolds.
The present paper aims to establish the local well-posedness of Euler's fluid equations on geometric rough paths. In particular, we consider the Euler equations for the incompressible flow of an ideal fluid whose Lagrangian transport velocity possesses an additional rough-in-time, divergence-free vector field. In recent work, we have demonstrated that this system can be derived from Clebsch and Hamilton-Pontryagin variational principles that possess a perturbative geometric rough path Lie-advection constraint. In this paper, we prove the local well-posedness of the system in $L^2$-Sobolev spac…
This paper is devoted to the smooth and stationary Wong-Zakai approximations for a class of rough differential equations driven by a geometric fractional Brownian rough path $\boldsymbolω$ with Hurst index $H\in(\frac{1}{3},\frac{1}{2}]$. We first construct the approximation $\boldsymbolω_δ$ of $\boldsymbolω$ by probabilistic arguments, and then using the rough path theory to obtain the Wong-Zakai approximation for the solution on any finite interval. Finally, both the original system and approximative system generate a continuous random dynamical systems $φ$ and $φ^δ$. As a consequence of the…
We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of stochastic scalar conservation laws with joint space-time transport noise and affine-linear noise driven by a geometric p-rough path. In particular, stability of the solutions with respect to the driving rough path is obtained, leading to a robust approach to stochastic scalar conservation laws. As immediate corollaries we obtain support theorems, large deviation results and the generation of a random dynamical system.
This work focuses on the Laplace approximation for the rough differential equation (RDE) driven by mixed rough path with as . Firstly, based on geometric rough path lifted from mixed fractional Brownian motion (fBm), the Schilder-type large deviation principle (LDP) for the law of the first level path of the solution to the RDE is given. Due to the particularity of mixed rough path, the main difficulty in carrying out the Laplace approximation is to prove the Hilbert-Schmidt property for the Hessian matrix of the Itô map restricted on the Cameron-Martin space of the mixed fBm. To this end, we …
We construct in this article an explicit geometric rough path over arbitrary $d$-dimensional paths with finite $1/α$-variation for any $α\in(0,1)$. The method may be coined as 'Fourier normal ordering', since it consists in a regularization obtained after permuting the order of integration in iterated integrals so that innermost integrals have highest Fourier frequencies. In doing so, there appear non-trivial tree combinatorics, which are best understood by using the structure of the Hopf algebra of decorated rooted trees (in connection with the Chen or multiplicative property) and of the Hopf…
We devise in this work a simple mechanism for constructing flows on a Banach space from approximate flows, and show how it can be used in a simple way to reprove from scratch and extend the main existence and well-posedness results for rough differential equations, in the context of dynamics on a Banach space driven by a finite dimensional Holder weak geometric p-rough path, for any 2<p; the explosion question under linear growth conditions on the vector fields, Taylor expansion and convergence rates for Euler estimates are also dealt with. We illustrate our approach by proving an existence an…
We introduce a differential structure for the space of weakly geometric p rough paths over a Banach space V for 2<p<3. We begin by considering a certain natural family of smooth rough paths and differentiating in the truncated tensor series. The resulting object has a clear interpretation, even for non-smooth rough paths, which we take to be an element of the tangent space. We can associate it uniquely to an equivalence class of curves, with equivalence defined by our differential structure. Thus, for a functional on rough path space, we can define the derivative in a tangent direction analogo…
Iterated integrals of paths arise frequently in the study of the Taylor's expansion for controlled differential equations. We will prove a factorial decay estimate, conjectured by M. Gubinelli, for the iterated integrals of non-geometric rough paths. We will explain, with a counter example, why the conventional approach of using the neoclassical inequality fails. Our proof involves a concavity estimate for sums over rooted trees and a non-trivial extension of T. Lyons' proof in 1994 for the factorial decay of iterated Young's integrals.
We study a class of linear first and second order partial differential equations driven by weak geometric $p$-rough paths, and prove the existence of a unique solution for these equations. This solution depends continuously on the driving rough path. This allows a robust approach to stochastic partial differential equations. In particular, we may replace Brownian motion by more general Gaussian and Markovian noise. Support theorems and large deviation statements all became easy corollaries of the corresponding statements of the driving process. In the case of first order equations with Gaussia…
