Direct numerical simulations at Re = 200 have been conducted of the flow past rows of tandem cylinders. Local stability analysis shows that the wakes of two tandem cylinders are characterised by the formation of a region where the mean flow is locally absolutely unstable immediately behind the second cylinder, followed by a long region that is convectively unstable. The location where the flow changes from absolutely to convectively unstable provides a prediction of where the placement of a third body could trigger a global change, which is confirmed with simulations of the flow past three cylinders, and the flow past two cylinders followed by a short flat plate. A third body placed downstream of the absolute/convective instability transition location is effectively cloaked, its presence having virtually no impact on the flow both upstream and downstream. However, when a body is placed upstream of this location it triggers a global change in the flow, its presence being broadcast throughout the flow domain. However, a third cylinder placed well upstream of this location does not trigger the global change. Sensitivity analysis of the mean flow is conducted, and it is shown that the third cylinder does not simply act as a small perturbation that can excite sensitive regions, but when it is very close to the second cylinder it induces a mean flow correction that eliminates the sensitive regions which may explain why it does not trigger the global change.
Models of cylinders in the oscillatory flow can be found virtually everywhere in the marine industry, such as pump towers experiencing sloshing load in a LNG ship liquid tank. However, compared to the problem of a cylinder in the uniform flow, a cylinder in the oscillatory flow is less studied, let alone multiple cylinders. Therefore, we experimentally and numerically studied two identical circular cylinders oscillating in the still water with either a side-by-side or a tandem configuration for a wide range of Keulegan-Carpenter number and Stokes number $β$. The experiment result shows that th…
The fluid structure interaction of cylinders in tandem arrangement is used as validation basis of a multi-domain Lagrangian-Eulerian hybrid flow solver. In this hybrid combination, separate grids of limited width are defined around every solid body, on which the Eulerian flow equations are solved using finite volume approximations. In order to interconnect the domains defined by the grids, the entire flow is described in Lagrangian coordinates and the corresponding equations are solved via particle approximations in fully coupled mode with the solutions within the Eulerian grids. The flow solv…
We investigate the dynamics of flows past a stationary circular cylinder embedded on spherical and cylindrical surfaces at a fixed Reynolds number of 100. For flows on surfaces, it is convenient to express the Navier-Stokes equations in exterior calculus notation. We employ the discrete exterior calculus (DEC) method (Mohamed et al. (2016)) to numerically solve the equations. We explore the role played by curvature on dynamical quantities of interest: the drag coefficient (Cd), the lift coefficient (Cl), and the Strouhal number (St). Our simulations indicate that the effect of surface curvatur…
We propose a novel non-linear manifold learning from snapshot data and demonstrate its superiority over Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) for shedding-dominated shear flows. Key enablers are isometric feature mapping, Isomap (Tenenbaum et al., 2000), as encoder and K-nearest neighbours (KNN) algorithm as decoder. The proposed technique is applied to numerical and experimental datasets including the fluidic pinball, a swirling jet, and the wake behind a couple of tandem cylinders. Analyzing the fluidic pinball, the manifold is able to describe the pitchfork bifurcation and the chaotic regim…
The present study investigates unsteady wake dynamics in flow past oscillating cylinder. Two-dimensional computational study is carried out for flow past sinusoidally oscillating cylinder. Operating parameters like Reynolds number, forcing frequency, amplitude and wavelength are systematically varied and their effect on wake dynamics is investigated. Lift and drag coefficients are plotted with cylinder position to characterize the flow. Further, flow field is investigated using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD). Time-resolved vorticity contours are obtained. These results are then processe…
This paper proposes an Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian incompressible finite volume scheme based on Consistent Flux Reconstruction method (ALE-CFR) on deforming two-dimensional unstructured triangular grids. The scheme is further applied to solve for a problem of two-dimensional incompressible viscous flow past a rotationally oscillating circular cylinder when subjected to forced transverse oscillations at Re = 100. The paper first focuses on the mathematical development and validation of the ALE-CFR scheme and then its application on the problem. The rotational oscillation frequencies were take…
Flow over bluff bodies has multiple engineering applications and thus, has been studied for decades. The lift and drag coefficients are practically important in the design of many components such as automobiles, aircrafts, buildings etc. These coefficients vary significantly with Reynolds number and geometric parameters of the bluff body. In this study, we have analyzed the sensitivity of lift and drag coefficients on single and tandem elliptic cylinders to cylinder aspect ratios, angles of attack, cylinder separation, and flow Reynolds number. Sensitivity analysis with Monte-Carlo algorithm r…
The flow past inline oscillating rectangular cylinders is studied numerically at a Reynolds number representative of two-dimensional flow. A symmetric mode, known as S-II, consisting of a pair of oppositely-signed vortices on each side, observed recently in experiments, is obtained computationally. A new symmetric mode, named here as S-III, is also found. At low oscillation amplitudes, the vortex shedding pattern transitions from antisymmetric to symmetric smoothly via a regime of intermediate phase. At higher amplitudes, this intermediate regime is chaotic. The finding of chaos extends and co…
A numerical study of two-dimensional flow past a confined circular cylinder with slip wall is performed. A dimensionless number, Knudsen number ($Kn$) is used to describe the slip length of cylinder wall. The Reynolds number ($Re$) and Knudsen number ($Kn$) ranges considered are $Re = [1, 180]$ and $Kn = [0, \infty)$, respectively. Time-averaged flow separation angle ($\bar{θ_s}$), dimensionless recirculation length ($\bar{L_s}$) and the tangential velocity ($\bar{u_τ}$) distributed on the cylinder's wall, drag coefficient ($\bar{C_d}$) and drag reduction ($DR$) are investigated. The time-aver…
This study presents a numerical investigation of how fluid viscoelasticity influences the flow dynamics past a transversely forced oscillating cylinder in the laminar vortex shedding regime at a fixed Reynolds number of 100. In particular, we examine how fluid viscoelasticity influences the boundary between the lock-in and no lock-in zones and the associated wake topology compared to that seen in a simple Newtonian fluid. All in all, we find that the fluid viscoelasticity facilitates the synchronization of the vortex street with the cylinder motion at lower oscillation frequencies than that re…
In this work, a numerical scheme based on a level-set immersed boundary method is employed for the numerical simulation of the flow around two tandem circular cylinders in the subcritical flow regimes. Three different spacing ratios $\ell/\mathcal{D}$ (where $\ell$ is the center-to-center distance between the two cylinders with $\mathcal{D}$ being the diameter of the cylinders) from $2$ to $4$ is considered. The instantaneous flow structures, pressure distributions and hydrodynamic forces on two tandem cylinders are analyzed at a Reynolds number of $\mathcal{R}\mathfrak{e}=2.2\times 10^4$. The…
In this paper, we formulated the non-steady flow due to the uniformly accelerated and rotating circular cylinder from rest in a stationary, viscous, incompressible and micropolar fluid. This flow problem is examined numerically by adopting a special scheme comprising the Adams-Bashforth Temporal Fourier Series method and the Runge-Kutta Temporal Special Finite-Difference method. This numerical scheme transforms the governing equation for micropolar fluids for this problem into system of finite-difference equations. This system was further solved numerically by point SOR-method. These results w…
Turbulent flow evolution and energy cascades are significantly different in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) flows. Studies have investigated these differences in obstacle-free turbulent flows, but solid boundaries have an important impact on the cross-over between 3D to 2D turbulence dynamics. In this work, we investigate the span effect on the turbulence nature of flow past a circular cylinder at Re=10000. It is found that even for highly anisotropic geometries, 3D small-scale structures detach from the walls. Additionally, the natural large-scale rotation of the Kármán vortic…
Turbulent flow past an equilateral triangular cylinder with splitter plate inserted downstream is numerically tested for different gap ratios (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2) and plate dimensions (0, 1, 1.5) on the flow field and heat transfer characteristics. Unsteady flow simulations are carried out at Re=22,000 in a finite volume based collocated framework, on a two-dimensional unstructured mesh. Reynolds averaged momentum and energy equations are solved in conjunction with the standard $κ$-$ε$ model. In this study, cylinder and control plate are subjected to constant wall temperature. It is observed th…
The combined effect of fluid elasticity and yield-stress on the flow past a circular cylinder is studied by two-dimensional direct numerical simulation. We analyze the effects of yield-stress, elasticity, shear-thinning, and shear-thickening on the wake characteristics using the Saramito constitutive model. The elastoviscoplastic (EVP) wake flow is studied at a moderate Reynolds number (Re = 100) where two-dimensional vortex shedding occurs in the Newtonian case. We find that in the shear-thinning elastoviscoplastic flow, when yield stress increases, the drag coefficient and root mean square o…
The study of vortex flows in the vicinity of multiple solid obstacles is of considerable theoretical interest and practical importance. In particular, the case of flows past a circular cylinder placed above a plane wall has attracted a lot of attention recently. In this case, a stationary vortex is formed in front of the cylinder, in contradistinction to the usual case without the plane where a vortex pair is observed behind the cylinder. In the present work, we apply modern complex analysis techniques to obtain the complex potential for the problem of one point-vortex placed in a uniform stre…
The present study investigates the passive flow control phenomena over a two-dimensional circular cylinder using numerical simulations in the laminar regime. The aim is to explore one of the passive control techniques, which involves the introduction of a slit to the geometry of the cylinder. The two parameters, slit width ratio S/D (slit width/diameter) and slit angle (measured with respect to the incoming flow direction), play an essential role in determining the trend of critical Reynolds number (Rec). Most of the analysis invokes flow visualization and saturation amplitude methods to obtai…
We study effects of both magnetic field and radiation on unsteady free convective magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow under the influence of heat and mass transfer. An implicit finite difference scheme of Crank-Nicolson method is used to analyze the results. The governing boundary layer equations along with the initial and boundary conditions are casted into a dimensionless form which results in a more precise solution. We determine the change in velocity under the influence of radiation and magnetic field with temperature and concentration taken into account. A code is constructed (FORTRAN 6.5) to…
Although the stability properties of the wake past impervious bluff bodies have been widely examined in the literature, similar analyses regarding the flow around and through porous ones are still lacking. In this work, the effect of the porosity and permeability on the wake patterns of porous rectangular cylinders is numerically investigated at low to moderate Reynolds numbers in the framework of direct numerical simulation combined with local and global stability analyses. A modified Darcy-Brinkman formulation is employed here so as to describe the flow behavior inside the porous media, wher…
We perform a three-dimensional, short-wavelength stability analysis on the numerically simulated two-dimensional flow past a circular cylinder for Reynolds numbers in the range $50\le Re\le300$; here, $Re = U_{\infty}D/ν$ with $U_\infty$, $D$ and $ν$ being the free-stream velocity, the diameter of the cylinder and the kinematic viscosity of the fluid, respectively. For a given $Re$, inviscid local stability equations from the geometric optics approach are solved on three distinct closed fluid particle trajectories (denoted as orbits 1, 2 & 3) for purely transverse perturbations. The inviscid i…

A recent Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) experiment in He II counterflow around a cylindrical obstacle showed the existence of apparently stationary normal fluid ddies both downstream (at the rear) and upstream (in front) of the cylinder. This rather surprising result does not have an analogue in experimental observations of classical fluid flows. We suggest that the explanation for the apparent stability of such eddies can be provided entirely from the viewpoint of classical fluid dynamics. We also discuss a possible connection between the emergence of the normal fluid eddies and the polariz…
We present an asymptotic theory for analytical characterization of the high-Reynolds-number incompressible flow of a Newtonian fluid past a shear-free circular cylinder. The viscosity-induced modifications to this flow are localized and except in the neighborhood of the rear stagnation point, behave like a linear perturbation of the inviscid flow. Our theory gives a highly accurate description of these modifications by including the contribution from the most significant viscous term in a correctional perturbation expansion about an inviscid base state. We derive the boundary layer equation fo…
The motion of two pairs of counter-rotating point vortices placed in a uniform flow past a circular cylinder is studied analytically and numerically. When the dynamics is restricted to the symmetric subspace---a case that can be realized experimentally by placing a splitter plate in the center plane---, it is found that there is a family of linearly stable equilibria for same-signed vortex pairs. The nonlinear dynamics in the symmetric subspace is investigated and several types of orbits are presented. The analysis reported here provides new insights and reveals novel features of this four-vor…
Flow past a circular cylinder is investigated in the subcritical regime, below the onset of Benard-von Karman vortex shedding at Re_c ~ 47. The transient response of infinitesimal perturbations is computed. The domain requirements for obtaining converged results is discussed at length. It is shown that energy amplification occurs as low as Re=2.2. Throughout much of the subcritical regime the maximum energy amplification increases approximately exponentially in the square of Re reaching 6800 at Re_c$. The spatiotemporal structure of the optimal transient dynamics is shown to be transitory Bena…
Plane Poiseuille flow past a nanoscale cylinder that is arbitrarily confined (i.e., symmetrically or asymmetrically confined) in a slit channel is studied via hydrodynamic lubrication theory and molecular dynamics simulations, considering cases where the cylinder remains static or undergoes thermal motion. Lubrication theory predictions for the drag force and volumetric flow rate are in close agreement with molecular dynamics simulations of flows having molecularly thin lubrication gaps, despite the presence of significant structural forces induced by the crystalline structure of the modeled s…
We study the flow of a thixotropic fluid around a cylinder. The rheology of the fluid is described by means of a structural viscoplastic model based on the Bingham constitutive equation, regularised using the Papanastasiou regularisation. The yield stress is assumed to vary linearly with the structural parameter, which varies from zero (completely broken structure) to one (fully developed skeleton structure), following a first-order rate equation which accounts for material structure break-down and build-up. The results were obtained numerically using the Finite Element Method. Simulations wer…
We study numerically the two-dimensional flow past a circular cylinder as a prototypical transitional flow, and investigate the influence of a generic slip boundary condition on the wake dynamics. We show that slip significantly delays the onset of recirculation and shedding in the wake behind the cylinder. As expected, the drag on the cylinder decreases with slip, with an increased drag sensitivity for large Reynolds numbers. We also show that past the critical shedding Reynolds number, slip decreases the vorticity intensity in the wake, as well as the lift forces on the cylinder, but increas…
A new analytical criterion that captures the onset of separation of flow past elliptic cylinders is derived by considering the variation of the wall normal velocity in Reynolds number parameter space. It is shown that this criterion can be used to calculate the separation Reynolds number Re_s for the classical problem of flow past a circular cylinder, a contentious and unresolved issue till date. The two dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are solved computationally and an exact value of Re_s is obtained by applying the aforementioned criterion.
Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is often employed in developing reduced-order models (ROM) in fluid flows for design, control, and optimization. Contrary to the usual practice where velocity field is the focus, we apply the POD analysis on the pressure field data obtained from numerical simulations of the flow past stationary and oscillating cylinders. Since pressure mainly contributes to the hydrodynamic forces acting on the structure, we compute the pressure POD modes on the cylinder surface oscillating in lock-in and lock-out regions. These modes are then dissected into sine and cosin…

An overset grid method was used to investigate the interaction between a particle-laden flow and a circular cylinder. The overset grid method was implemented in the Pencil Code , a high-order finite-difference code for compressible flow simulation. High-order summation-by-part operators were used at the cylinder boundary, and both bi-linear Lagrangian and bi-quadratic spline interpolation was used to communicate between the background grid and the body-conformal cylindrical grid. The performance of the overset grid method was assessed to benchmark cases of steady and unsteady flows past a cyli…
The incompressible boundary layer in the axial flow past a cylinder has been shown Tutty et. al.(\cite{tutty}) to be stabler than a two-dimensional boundary layer, with the helical mode being the least stable. In this paper the secondary instability of this flow is studied. The laminar flow is shown here to be always stable at high transverse curvatures to secondary disturbances, which, together with a similar observation for the linear modes implies that the flow past a thin cylinder is likely to remain laminar. The azimuthal wavenumber of the pair of least stable secondary modes ($m_+$ and $…
The study of vortex flows around solid obstacles is of considerable interest from both a theoretical and practical perspective. One geometry that has attracted renewed attention recently is that of vortex flows past a circular cylinder placed above a plane wall, where a stationary recirculating eddy can form in front of the cylinder, in contradistinction to the usual case (without the plane boundary) for which a vortex pair appears behind the cylinder. Here we analyze the problem of vortex flows past a cylinder near a wall through the lenses of the point-vortex model. By conformally mapping th…
