We study effects of both magnetic field and radiation on unsteady free convective magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow under the influence of heat and mass transfer. An implicit finite difference scheme of Crank-Nicolson method is used to analyze the results. The governing boundary layer equations along with the initial and boundary conditions are casted into a dimensionless form which results in a more precise solution. We determine the change in velocity under the influence of radiation and magnetic field with temperature and concentration taken into account. A code is constructed (FORTRAN 6.5) to obtain predictions following from the numerical solution which have been compared with the existing information in the literature, and a very good agreement is obtained. The results obtained through this study will be helpful in the prediction of flow and heat transfer in the presence of magnetic field and radiation.
I consider the problem of weakly nonlinear stability of three-dimensional convective magnetohydrodynamic systems, where there is no alpha-effect or it is insignificant, to perturbations involving large scales. I assume that the convective MHD state (steady or evolutionary), the stability of which I investigate, does not involve large spatio-temporal scales, and it is stable to perturbations involving the same small spatial scales, as the perturbed state. Mean-field equations, which I derive for the perturbation using asymptotic techniques for multiscale systems, are a generalization of the equ…
It is well known that the reversibility of Stokes flow makes it difficult for small microorganisms to swim. Inertial effects break this reversibility, allowing new mechanisms of propulsion and feeding. Therefore it is important to understand the effects of unsteady and fluid inertia on the dynamics of microorganisms in flow. In this work, we show how to translate known inertial effects for non-motile organisms to motile ones, from passive to active particles. The method relies on a principle used earlier by Legendre and Magnaudet (1997) to deduce inertial corrections to the lift force on a bub…
An analysis has been investigated for the effects of thermal radiation and Hall current on magnetohydrodynamic free-convective flow and mass transfer over a stretching sheet with variable viscosity in the presence of heat generation/absorption. The fluid viscosity is assumed to vary as an inverse linear function of temperature. The boundary-layer equations governing the flow problem under consideration have been reduced to a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations by employing a similarity transformation. Using the finite difference scheme, numerical solutions to the transform ord…
The spectrum of temporal fluctuations of total magnetic energy for several dynamo models is different from white noise at frequencies smaller than the inverse of the turnover time of the underlying turbulent velocity field. Examples for this phenomenon are known from previous work and we add in this paper simulations of the G.O. Roberts dynamo and of convectively driven dynamos in rotating spherical shells. The appearance of colored noise in the magnetic energy is explained by simple phenomenological models. The Kolmogorov theory of turbulence is used to predict the spectrum of kinetic and mag…
We discuss a problem about magnetic collapse as a possible process for singularity formation of the magnetic field in a finite time within ideal magneto-hydrodynamics for incompressible fluids. This process is very important from the point of view of various astrophysical applications, in particular, as a mechanism of magnetic filaments formation in the convective zone of the Sun. The collapse possibility is connected with compressibility of continuously distributed magnetic field lines. A well-known example of the formation of magnetic filaments in the kinematic dynamo approximation with a gi…
Vertical-axis wind turbines are great candidates to diversify wind energy technology, but their aerodynamic complexity limits industrial deployment. To improve the efficiency and lifespan of vertical axis wind turbines, we desire data-driven models and control strategies that take into account the timing and duration of subsequent events in the unsteady flow development. Here, we aim to characterise the chain of events that leads to dynamic stall on a vertical-axis wind turbine blade and to quantify the influence of the turbine operation conditions on the duration of the individual flow develo…
The role of turbulent effects for dynamos in the Sun and stars continues to be debated. Mean-field (MF) theory provides a broadly used framework to connect these effects to fundamental magnetohydrodynamics. While inaccessible observationally, turbulent effects can be directly studied using global convective dynamo (GCD) simulations. We measure the turbulent effects in terms of turbulent transport coefficients, based on the MF framework, from an exemplary GCD simulation using the test-field method. These coefficients are then used as an input into an MF model. We find a good agreement between t…
Despite the lack of a shear-rich tachocline region low-mass fully convective stars are capable of generating strong magnetic fields, indicating that a dynamo mechanism fundamentally different from the solar dynamo is at work in these objects. We present a self-consistent three dimensional model of magnetic field generation in low-mass fully convective stars. The model utilizes the anelastic magnetohydrodynamic equations to simulate compressible convection in a rotating sphere. A distributed dynamo working in the model spontaneously produces a dipole-dominated surface magnetic field of the obse…
The 3D thermal convection in the Boussinesq approximation with heating from below and dynamo in the cube are considered. We study dependence of the convection intensity and magnetic field generation on the latitude in $β$-plane approximation. It is shown that kinetic energy gradually increases from the poles to the equator more than order of magnitude. The model predicts the strong azimuthal thermal wind, which direction depends on the sign of the thermal convective fluctuations. The spatial scale of the arising flow is comparable to the scale of the physical domain. The magnetic energy increa…
Due to ample applications from medical services to industrial activities, the study of flow and heat transfer through a curved duct has attracted considerable attention to the researchers. In this paper, a comprehensive numerical study is presented for the fully developed two-dimensional flow of viscous incompressible fluid through a curved square duct for various curvatures. The spectral method is used as a basic tool to solve the system of nonlinear partial differential equations. Numerical calculations are carried out over a wide range of the Dean number, $0<D_n\le 5000$, for curvature rati…
Stably stratified layers are present in stellar interiors (radiative zones) as well as planetary interiors - recent observations and theoretical studies of the Earth's magnetic field seem to indicate the presence of a thin, stably stratified layer at the top of the liquid outer core. We present direct numerical simulations of this region, which is modelled as an axisymmetric spherical Couette flow for a stably stratified fluid embedded in a dipolar magnetic field. For strong magnetic fields, a super-rotating shear layer, rotating nearly 30% faster than the imposed rotation rate difference betw…

In this paper we studied the weakly nonlinear stage of stationary convective instability in a nonuniformly rotating layer of an electrically conductive fluid in an axial uniform magnetic field under the influence of: a) temperature modulation of the layer boundaries; b) gravitational modulation; c) modulation of the magnetic field; d) modulation of the angular velocity of rotation. As a result of applying the method of perturbation theory for the small parameter of supercriticality of the stationary Rayleigh number nonlinear non-autonomous Ginzburg-Landau equations for the above types of modul…
Fully compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations are a fundamental tool for investigating the role of dynamo amplification in the generation of magnetic fields in deep convective layers of stars. The flows that arise in such environments are characterized by low (sonic) Mach numbers (M_son < 0.01 ). In these regimes, conventional MHD codes typically show excessive dissipation and tend to be inefficient as the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) constraint on the time step becomes too strict. In this work we present a new method for efficiently simulating MHD flows at low Mach numbers in a sp…
