The incompressible boundary layer in the axial flow past a cylinder has been shown Tutty et. al.(\cite{tutty}) to be stabler than a two-dimensional boundary layer, with the helical mode being the least stable. In this paper the secondary instability of this flow is studied. The laminar flow is shown here to be always stable at high transverse curvatures to secondary disturbances, which, together with a similar observation for the linear modes implies that the flow past a thin cylinder is likely to remain laminar. The azimuthal wavenumber of the pair of least stable secondary modes ($m_+$ and $m_-$) are related to that of the primary ($n$) by $m_+=2n$ and $m_-=-n$. The base flow is shown to be inviscidly stable at any curvature.
A 1934 paper by Leray posed the question of the regularity of solutions of the dynamical equations for incompressible inviscid fluids with smooth initial data. Since there has been many attempts to answer this question. Leray examined the possibility of self-similar solutions becoming singular in finite time at a definite space-time location. We reexamine this question in the light of a thorough analysis of the equations for the self-similar solution in axisymmetric geometries with a dependence on a logarithm of time besides the one due to the transformation to self-similar variables.
We study the stability of cylindrical Taylor-Couette flow in the presence of azimuthal magnetic fields, and show that one obtains non-axisymmetric magnetorotational instabilities, having azimuthal wavenumber m=1. For Omega_o/Omega_i only slightly greater than the Rayleigh value (r_i/r_o)^2, the critical Reynolds and Hartmann numbers are Re_c ~ 10^3 and Ha_c ~ 10^2, independent of the magnetic Prandtl number Pm. These values are sufficiently small that it should be possible to obtain these instabilities in the PROMISE experimental facility.
In this paper, Beltrami vector fields in several orthogonal coordinate systems are obtained analytically and numerically. Specifically, axisymmetric incompressible inviscid steady state Beltrami (Trkalian) fluid flows are obtained with the motivation to model flows that have been hypothesized to occur in tornadic flows. The studied coordinate systems include those that appear amenable to modeling such flows: the cylindrical, spherical, paraboloidal, and prolate and oblate spheroidal systems. The usual Euler equations are reformulated using the Bragg--Hawthorne equation for the stream function …
In this paper, a multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is developed for simulating incompressible axisymmetric thermal flows in porous media at the representative elementary volume (REV) scale. In the model, a D2Q9 MRT-LB equation is proposed to solve the flow field in addition to the D2Q5 LB equation for the temperature field. The source terms of the model are simple and contain no velocity and temperature gradient terms. The generalized axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations for axisymmetric flows in porous media are correctly recovered from the MRT-LB model through the C…
We compile a list of 2-D and axisymmetric Green's functions for isotropic full and half spaces, to complement our letter "Linear elasticity of incompressible solids". We also extend the isotropic exactly incompressible linear theory from our letter to include isotropic neo-Hookean solids subject to a large pre-strain, and present Green's functions in these cases. The Green's function for a pre-strained half-space reproduces the Biot instability.
We develop a Fourier-Chebyshev pseudospectral direct numerical simulation (DNS) to examine a potentially singular solution of the radially bounded, three-dimensional (3D), axisymmetric Euler equations [G. Luo and T.Y. Hou, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, 111.36 (2014)]. We demonstrate that: (a) the time of singularity is preceded, in any spectrally truncated DNS, by the formation of oscillatory structures called tygers, first investigated in the one-dimensional (1D) Burgers and two-dimensional (2D) Euler equations; (b) the analyticity-strip method can be generalized to obtain an estimate for the (…
The `Rayleigh line' $μ=η^2$, where $μ=Ω_o/Ω_i$ and $η=r_i/r_o$ are respectively the rotation and radius ratios between inner (subscript `i') and outer (subscript `o') cylinders, is regarded as marking the limit of centrifugal instability (CI) in unstratified inviscid Taylor-Couette flow, for both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric modes. Non-axisymmetric stratorotational instability (SRI) is known to set in for anticyclonic rotation ratios beyond that line, i.e. $η^2<μ<1$ for axially stably-stratified Taylor-Couette flow, but the competition between CI and SRI in the range $μ<η^2$ has not yet b…
The Hill vortex is a three-dimensional vortex structure solution of the Euler equations. For small amplitude axisymmetric disturbances on the external surface from the linear stability analysis by \citet{moff78} emerged the formation of a tail. Successive studies confirmed this fact, and in addition observed a different shape of the tail with azimuthal small amplitude disturbances. In this paper the Navier-Stokes equations are solved at high values of the Reynolds number imposing large amplitude axisymmetric and three-dimensional disturbances on the surface of the vortex. The conclusion is tha…
The stability of annular electromagnetic pumps (EMPs) is investigated through 3D direct numerical simulations. When induction effects dominate dissipative processes, linear induction EMPs become unstable and lead to non-axisymmetric states relatively different from what was predicted by previous theoretical models. We show that the 3D destabilization of the flow is deeply connected to the axisymmetric state, and always appears as a secondary bifurcation from a locally stalled flow, even if the applied magnetic field is axisymmetric. Finally, we model a configuration aiming to optimize the effi…
In this paper, we present strong numerical evidences that the incompressible axisymmetric Euler equations with degenerate viscosity coefficients and smooth initial data of finite energy develop a potential finite-time locally self-similar singularity at the origin. An important feature of this potential singularity is that the solution develops a two-scale traveling wave that travels towards the origin. The two-scale feature is characterized by the scaling property that the center of the traveling wave is located at a ring of radius $O((T-t)^{1/2})$ surrounding the symmetry axis while the thic…
We study the nonlinear mode competition of various spiral instabilities in magnetised Taylor-Couette flow. The resulting finite-amplitude mixed-mode solution branches are tracked using the annular-parallelogram periodic domain approach developed by Deguchi & Altmeyer (2013). Mode competition phenomena are studied in both the anti-cyclonic and cyclonic Rayleigh-stable regimes. In the anti-cyclonic sub-rotation regime, with the inner cylinder rotating faster than the outer, Hollerbach, Teeluck & Rudiger (2010) found competing axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric magneto-rotational linearly unstable…
Based on the solution of Atanasiu et al. (2004), a theoretical model for axisymmetric vortex flows is derived in the present study by solving the vorticity transport equation for an inviscid, incompressible fluid in cylindrical coordinates. The model can describe a variety of axisymmetric flows with particular boundary conditions at a moderately high Reynolds number. This paper shows one example: a high Reynolds number laminar vortex ring. The model can represent a family of vortex rings by specifying the modulus function using a Rayleigh distribution function. The characteristics of this vort…
We conduct a linear stability calculation of an ideal Keplerian flow on which a sinusoidal zonal flow is imposed. The analysis uses the shearing sheet model and is carried out both in isothermal and adiabatic conditions, with and without self-gravity (SG). In the non-SG regime a structure in the potential vorticity (PV) leads to a non-axisymmetric Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability; in the short-wavelength limit its growth rate agrees with the incompressible calculation by Lithwick (2007), which only considers perturbations elongated in the streamwise direction. The instability's strength is an…
Non-axisymmetric modes of magnetorotational and possible hydrodynamical instabilities in the upcoming DRESDYN-MRI experiments -- linear and nonlinear dynamics
Inspired by the recent realization of a 2D chiral fluid as an active monolayer droplet moving atop a 3D Stokesian fluid, we formulate mathematically its free-boundary dynamics. The surface droplet is described as a general 2D linear, incompressible, and isotropic fluid, having a viscous shear stress, an active chiral driving stress, and a Hall stress allowed by the lack of time-reversal symmetry. The droplet interacts with itself through its driven internal mechanics and by driving flows in the underlying 3D Stokes phase. We pose the dynamics as the solution to a singular integral-differential…
We numerically investigate the saturation of the hydromagnetic instabilities of a magnetized spherical Couette flow. Previous simulations [Hollerbach, 2009] demonstrated region where the axisymmetric flow, calculated from a 2-D simulation, was linearly unstable to nonaxisymmetric perturbations. Full, nonlinear, 3d simulations [Hollerbach 2009, Travnikov 2011] showed that the saturated state would consist only of harmonics of one azimuthal wave number, though there were bifurcations and transitions as nondimensional parameters (Re, Ha) were varied. Here, the energy transfer between different az…
Spiral structure is one of the most common structures in the nature flows. A general steady spiral solution of incompressible inviscid axisymmetric flow was obtained analytically by applying separation of variables to the 3D Euler equations. The solution, depending on 3 parameters, describes the spiral path of the fluid material element on the Bernoulli surface, whereas some new exact solutions were obtained to be bounded within the whole region. The first one is a continued typhoon-like vortex solution, where there are two intrinsic length scales. One is the radius of maximum circular velocit…
Swimming of a sphere in a viscous incompressible fluid is studied on the basis of the Navier-Stokes equations for wave-type distortions of the spherical shape. At sizable values of the dimensionless scale number the mean swimming velocity is the result of a delicate balance between the net time-averaged flow generated directly by the surface distortions and the flow generated by the mean Reynolds force density. Depending on the stroke, this can lead to a surprising dependence of the mean swimming velocity on the kinematic viscosity of the fluid. The net flow pattern is calculated as a function…
We develop a novel multiscale model of interface motion for the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) and Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI) for two-dimensional, inviscid, compressible flows with vorticity, which yields a fast-running numerical algorithm that produces both qualitatively and quantitatively similar results to a resolved gas dynamics code, while running approximately two orders of magnitude (in time) faster. Our multiscale model is founded upon a new compressible-incompressible decomposition of the velocity field $u=v+w$. The incompressible component $w$ of the velocity is also irro…
In this brief report, a thermal lattice-Boltzmann (LB) model is presented for axisymmetric thermal flows in the incompressible limit. The model is based on the double-distribution-function LB method, which has attracted much attention since its emergence for its excellent numerical stability. Compared with the existing axisymmetric thermal LB models, the present model is simpler and retains the inherent features of the standard LB method. Numerical simulations are carried out for the thermally developing laminar flows in circular ducts and the natural convection in an annulus between two coaxi…
We report 3D numerical simulations of the flow of an electrically conducting fluid in a spherical shell when a magnetic field is applied. Different spherical Couette configurations are investigated, by varying the rotation ratio between the inner and the outer sphere, the geometry of the imposed field, and the magnetic boundary conditions on the inner sphere. Either a Stewartson layer or a Shercliff layer, accompanied by a radial jet, can be generated depending on the rotation speeds and the magnetic field strength, and various non-axisymmetric destabilizations of the flow are observed. We sho…
We investigate the stability of a uniform elliptical vortex in a two-dimensional incompressible Euler fluid. It's demonstrated that for small eccentricities, the vortex relaxes to a core-halo structure that undergoes rigid rotation with the central core remaining elliptical. For large eccentricities, the vortex splits into two quasi-circular vortices that revolve around the center of mass. Independent of the aspect ratio, the steady-state displays a low-density halo. We present a theory that qualitatively explains the transition between the two states. All theoretical results are compared with…
We perform a linearized local stability analysis for short-wavelength perturbations of a circular Couette flow with the radial temperature gradient. Axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric perturbations are considered and both the thermal diffusivity and the kinematic viscosity of the fluid are taken into account. The effect of the asymmetry of the heating both on the centrifugally unstable flows and on the onset of the instabilities of the centrifugally stable flows, including the flow with the Keplerian shear profile, is thoroughly investigated. It is found that the inward temperature gradient dest…
Algorithms for studying transitions and instabilities in incompressible flows typically require the solution of linear systems with the full Jacobian matrix. Other popular approaches, like gradient-based design optimization and fully implicit time integration, also require very robust solvers for this type of linear system. We present a parallel fully coupled multilevel incomplete factorization preconditioner for the 3D stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a structured grid. The algorithm and software are based on the robust two-level method developed by Wubs and Thies. In this…
The search of finite-time singularity solutions of Euler equations is considered for the case of an incompressible and inviscid fluid. Under the assumption that a finite-time blow-up solution may be spatially anisotropic as time goes by such that the flow contracts more rapidly into one direction than into the other, it can be shown that the dynamics of an axially symmetric flow with swirl may be approximated to a simpler hyperbolic system. By using the method of characteristics, it can be shown that generically the velocity flow exhibits multi-valued solutions appearing on a rim at a finite d…
