We develop a Fourier-Chebyshev pseudospectral direct numerical simulation (DNS) to examine a potentially singular solution of the radially bounded, three-dimensional (3D), axisymmetric Euler equations [G. Luo and T.Y. Hou, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, 111.36 (2014)]. We demonstrate that: (a) the time of singularity is preceded, in any spectrally truncated DNS, by the formation of oscillatory structures called tygers, first investigated in the one-dimensional (1D) Burgers and two-dimensional (2D) Euler equations; (b) the analyticity-strip method can be generalized to obtain an estimate for the (potential) singularity time.
The Hermite pseudospectral method is applied to solve the Navier-Stokes equations on a two-dimensional infinite domain. The feature of Hermite function allows us to adopt larger time steps than other spectral methods, but also leads to some extra computation when the stream-function is calculated from the vorticity field. The scaling factor is employed to increase the resolution within the region of our main interest, and the aliasing error is fully removed by the 2/3-$rule$. Several traditional numerical experiments are performed with high accuracy, and some related future work on physical ap…
A 1934 paper by Leray posed the question of the regularity of solutions of the dynamical equations for incompressible inviscid fluids with smooth initial data. Since there has been many attempts to answer this question. Leray examined the possibility of self-similar solutions becoming singular in finite time at a definite space-time location. We reexamine this question in the light of a thorough analysis of the equations for the self-similar solution in axisymmetric geometries with a dependence on a logarithm of time besides the one due to the transformation to self-similar variables.
We compile a list of 2-D and axisymmetric Green's functions for isotropic full and half spaces, to complement our letter "Linear elasticity of incompressible solids". We also extend the isotropic exactly incompressible linear theory from our letter to include isotropic neo-Hookean solids subject to a large pre-strain, and present Green's functions in these cases. The Green's function for a pre-strained half-space reproduces the Biot instability.
In this paper, a multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is developed for simulating incompressible axisymmetric thermal flows in porous media at the representative elementary volume (REV) scale. In the model, a D2Q9 MRT-LB equation is proposed to solve the flow field in addition to the D2Q5 LB equation for the temperature field. The source terms of the model are simple and contain no velocity and temperature gradient terms. The generalized axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations for axisymmetric flows in porous media are correctly recovered from the MRT-LB model through the C…
The incompressible boundary layer in the axial flow past a cylinder has been shown Tutty et. al.(\cite{tutty}) to be stabler than a two-dimensional boundary layer, with the helical mode being the least stable. In this paper the secondary instability of this flow is studied. The laminar flow is shown here to be always stable at high transverse curvatures to secondary disturbances, which, together with a similar observation for the linear modes implies that the flow past a thin cylinder is likely to remain laminar. The azimuthal wavenumber of the pair of least stable secondary modes ($m_+$ and $…
In this paper, Beltrami vector fields in several orthogonal coordinate systems are obtained analytically and numerically. Specifically, axisymmetric incompressible inviscid steady state Beltrami (Trkalian) fluid flows are obtained with the motivation to model flows that have been hypothesized to occur in tornadic flows. The studied coordinate systems include those that appear amenable to modeling such flows: the cylindrical, spherical, paraboloidal, and prolate and oblate spheroidal systems. The usual Euler equations are reformulated using the Bragg--Hawthorne equation for the stream function …
A novel algorithm for the direct numerical simulation of the variable-density, low-Mach Navier-Stokes equations extending the method of Kim, Moin, and Moser (1987) for incompressible flow is presented here. A Fourier representation is employed in the two homogeneous spatial directions and a number of discretizations can be used in the inhomogeneous direction. The momentum is decomposed into divergence- and curl-free portions which allows the momentum equations to be rewritten, removing the need to solve for the pressure. The temporal discretization is based on an explicit, segregated Runge-Kut…
In this paper, we present strong numerical evidences that the incompressible axisymmetric Euler equations with degenerate viscosity coefficients and smooth initial data of finite energy develop a potential finite-time locally self-similar singularity at the origin. An important feature of this potential singularity is that the solution develops a two-scale traveling wave that travels towards the origin. The two-scale feature is characterized by the scaling property that the center of the traveling wave is located at a ring of radius $O((T-t)^{1/2})$ surrounding the symmetry axis while the thic…
Inspired by the recent realization of a 2D chiral fluid as an active monolayer droplet moving atop a 3D Stokesian fluid, we formulate mathematically its free-boundary dynamics. The surface droplet is described as a general 2D linear, incompressible, and isotropic fluid, having a viscous shear stress, an active chiral driving stress, and a Hall stress allowed by the lack of time-reversal symmetry. The droplet interacts with itself through its driven internal mechanics and by driving flows in the underlying 3D Stokes phase. We pose the dynamics as the solution to a singular integral-differential…
Spiral structure is one of the most common structures in the nature flows. A general steady spiral solution of incompressible inviscid axisymmetric flow was obtained analytically by applying separation of variables to the 3D Euler equations. The solution, depending on 3 parameters, describes the spiral path of the fluid material element on the Bernoulli surface, whereas some new exact solutions were obtained to be bounded within the whole region. The first one is a continued typhoon-like vortex solution, where there are two intrinsic length scales. One is the radius of maximum circular velocit…
A simplified thermodynamic approach of the incompressible axisymmetric Euler equations is considered based on the conservation of helicity, angular momentum and microscopic energy. Statistical equilibrium states are obtained by maximizing the Boltzmann entropy under these sole constraints. We assume that these constraints are selected by the properties of forcing and dissipation. The fluctuations are found to be Gaussian while the mean flow is in a Beltrami state. Furthermore, we show that the maximization of entropy at fixed helicity, angular momentum and microscopic energy is equivalent to t…
The search of finite-time singularity solutions of Euler equations is considered for the case of an incompressible and inviscid fluid. Under the assumption that a finite-time blow-up solution may be spatially anisotropic as time goes by such that the flow contracts more rapidly into one direction than into the other, it can be shown that the dynamics of an axially symmetric flow with swirl may be approximated to a simpler hyperbolic system. By using the method of characteristics, it can be shown that generically the velocity flow exhibits multi-valued solutions appearing on a rim at a finite d…
The general pressure equation (GPE) is a new method proposed recently by Toutant (J. Comput. Phys., 374:822-842 (2018)) for incompressible flow simulation. It circumvents the Poisson equation for the pressure and performs better than the classical artificial compressibility method. Here it is generalized for two-phase incompressible viscous flows with variable density and viscosity. First, the pressure evolution equation is modified to account for the density variation. Second, customized discretizations are proposed to deal with the viscous stress terms with variable viscosity. Besides, addit…
We study the stability of two-dimensional inviscid flows in an annulus between two porous cylinders with respect to three-dimensional perturbations. The basic flow is irrotational, and both radial and azimuthal components of the velocity are non-zero. The direction of the radial flow can be from the inner cylinder to the outer one (the diverging flow) or from the outer cylinder to the inner one (the converging flow). It had been shown earlier in Ref. \cite{IM2013a} that, independent of the direction of the radial flow, the basic flow can be unstable to small two-dimensional perturbations. In t…
The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has gained increasing popularity in incompressible viscous flow simulations, but it uses many more variables than necessary. This defect was overcome by a recent approach that solves the more actual macroscopic equations obtained through Taylor series expansion analysis of the lattice Boltzmann equations [Lu et al., J. Comp. Phys., 415, 109546 (2020)]. The key is to keep some small additional terms (SATs) to stabilize the numerical solution of the weakly compressible Navier-Stokes equations. However, there are many SATs that complicate the implementation of t…
This investigation is based on a DNS of a steady self-preserving incompressible axisymmetric turbulent jet at a Reynolds number of 2400. The DNS data enable accurate maps of the outer irrotational flow field, and also the vorticity field in the turbulent core of the jet. It is found necessary to define two separate boundaries of the jet. The first is an inner boundary (turbulent/nonturbulent, T/NT), from where vorticity rises steeply towards to the core. The second is an outer rotational/irrotational boundary, beyond which the flow may be considered irrotational. The velocity field beyond the …
We investigate theoretically on the basis of the steady Stokes equations for a viscous incompressible fluid the flow induced by a Stokeslet located on the centre axis of two coaxially positioned rigid disks. The Stokeslet is directed along the centre axis. No-slip boundary conditions are assumed to hold at the surfaces of the disks. We perform the calculation of the associated Green's function in large parts analytically, reducing the spatial evaluation of the flow field to one-dimensional integrations amenable to numerical treatment. To this end, we formulate the solution of the hydrodynamic …
