In this note, we make a step towards the classification of toric surfaces admitting reducible Severi varieties. We generalize the results of [Lan19, Tyo13, Tyo14], and provide two families of toric surfaces admitting reducible Severi varieties. The first family is general, and is obtained by a quotient construction. The second family is exceptional, and corresponds to certain narrow polygons, which we call kites. We introduce two types of invariants that distinguish between the components of the Severi varieties, and allow us to provide lower bounds on the numbers of the components. The sharpness of the bounds is verified in some cases, and is expected to hold in general for ample enough linear systems. In the appendix, we establish a connection between the Severi problem and the topological classification of univariate polynomials.
The Severi variety parameterizes plane curves of degree d with delta nodes. Its degree is called the Severi degree. For large enough d, the Severi degrees coincide with the Gromov-Witten invariants of P^2. Fomin and Mikhalkin (2009) proved the 1995 conjecture that, for fixed delta, Severi degrees are eventually polynomial in d. In this paper, we study the Severi varieties corresponding to a large family of toric surfaces. We prove the analogous result that the Severi degrees are eventually polynomial as a function of the multidegree. More surprisingly, we show that the Severi degrees are also …
Ardila and Block used tropical results of Brugalle and Mikhalkin to count nodal curves on a certain family of toric surfaces. Building on a linearity result of the first author, we revisit their work in the context of the Goettsche-Yau-Zaslow formula for counting nodal curves on arbitrary smooth surfaces, addressing several questions they raised by proving stronger versions of their main theorems. In the process, we give new combinatorial formulas for the coefficients arising in the Goettsche-Yau-Zaslow formulas, and give correction terms arising from rational double points in the relevant fam…
We consider the set of forms of a toric variety over an arbitrary field: those varieties which become isomorphic to a toric variety after base field extension. In contrast to most previous work, we also consider arbitrary isomorphisms rather than just those that respect a torus action. We define an injective map from the set of forms of a toric variety to a non-abelian second cohomology set, which generalizes the usual Brauer class of a Severi-Brauer variety. Additionally, we define a map from the set of forms of a toric variety to the set of forms of a separable algebra along similar lines to…
The main purpose of this notes is to supplement the paper reid, which treated Minimal Model Program (also called Mori's Program) on toric varieties. We calculate lengths of negative extremal rays of toric varieties. As an application, we obtain a generalization of Fujita's conjecture for singular toric varieties. We also prove that every toric variety has a small projective toric $\bQ$-factorialization.
Any toric Deligne-Mumford stack is a $μ$-gerbe over the underlying toric orbifold for a finite abelian group $μ$. In this paper we give a sufficient condition so that certain kinds of gerbes over a toric Deligne-Mumford stack are again toric Deligne-Mumford stacks.
These notes survey some basic results in toric varieties over a field with examples and applications. A computer algebra package (written by the second author) is described which deals with both affine and projective toric varieties in any number of dimensions (written in both the software packages MAGMA and GAP). Among other things, the package implements a desingularization procedure for affine toric varieties, constructs some error-correcting codes associated with toric varieties, and computes the Riemann-Roch space of a divisor on a toric variety.
A convex lattice polygon Delta determines a pair (S,L) of a toric surface together with an ample toric line bundle on S. The Severi degree N^{Delta, delta} is the number of delta-nodal curves in the complete linear system |L| passing through dim|L|-delta general points. Cooper and Pandharipande showed that in the case of PP^1 x PP^1 the Severi degrees can be computed as the matrix elements of an operator on a Fock space. In this note we want to generalize and extend this result in two ways. First we show that it holds more generally for Delta a so called h-transverse lattice polygon. This inclu…
We give new estimates of lengths of extremal rays of birational type for toric varieties. We can see that our new estimates are the best by constructing some examples explicitly. As applications, we discuss the nefness and pseudo-effectivity of adjoint bundles of projective toric varieties. We also treat some generalizations of Fujita's freeness and very ampleness for toric varieties.
We prove a formula for the orbifold Chow ring of semi-projective toric DM stacks, generalizing the orbifold Chow ring formula of projective toric DM stacks by Borisov-Chen-Smith. We also consider a special kind of semi-projective toric DM stacks, the Lawrence toric DM stacks. We prove that the orbifold Chow ring of a Lawrence toric DM stack is isomorphic to the orbifold Chow ring of its associated hypertoric DM stack studied in \cite{JT}.
We calculate explicit formulas for the general equivariant Bondal-Orlov functors on the localized K-theory groups for a crepant birational transformation of toric DM stacks. We recall some facts that the Bondal-Orlov functors give equivalences on the bounded derived categories. Applying twice of these functors we get the Seidel-Thomas spherical twists for the derived category.
In this paper we study the geometry of toric degeneration of a Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen (BSDH) variety. We give some applications to BSDH varieties. Precisely, we classify Fano, weak Fano and log Fano BSDH varieties and their toric limits in Kac-Moody setting. We prove some vanishing theorems for the cohomology of tangent bundle (and line bundles) on BSDH varieties. We also recover the results in arXiv:1604.01998, by toric methods.
Here are few notes on not necessarily normal toric varieties and resolution by toric blow-up. These notes are independent of, but in the same spirit as the earlier preprint arXiv:math.AG/0306221. That is, they focus on the fact that toric varieties are locally given by monoid algebras.
We give a new description of the data needed to specify a morphism from a scheme to a toric Deligne-Mumford stack. The description is given in terms of a collection of line bundles and sections which satisfy certain conditions. As applications, we characterize any toric Deligne-Mumford stack as a product of roots of line bundles over the rigidified stack, describe the torus action, describe morphisms between toric Deligne-Mumford stacks with complete coarse moduli spaces in terms of homogeneous polynomials, and compare two different definitions of toric stacks.
Given a Cayley-Hamilton smooth order A in a central simple algebra $Σ$, we determine the flat locus of the Brauer-Severi fibration of the smooth order. Moreover, we give a classification of all (reduced) central singularities where the flat locus differs from the Azumaya locus and show that the fibers over the flat, non-Azumaya points near these central singularities can be described as fibered products of graphs of projection maps, thus generalizing an old result of Artin on the fibers of the Brauer-Severi fibration over a ramified point. Finally, we show these fibers are also toric quiver va…
In this note we apply the techniques of the toric systems introduced by Hille-Perling to several problems on smooth projective surfaces: We showed that the existence of full exceptional collection of line bundles implies the rationality for small Picard rank surfaces; we proved equivalences of several notions of cyclic strong exceptional collection of line bundles; we also proposed a partial solution to a conjecture on exceptional sheaves on weak del Pezzo surfaces.
In this note we give a brief review of the construction of a toric variety $\mathcal{V}$ coming from a genus $g \geq 2$ Riemann surface $Σ^g$ equipped with a trinion, or pair of pants, decomposition. This was outlined by J. Hurtubise and L. C. Jeffrey in \cite{JH1}. In \cite{T1} A. Tyurin used this construction on a certain collection of trinion decomposed surfaces to produce a variety $DM_g$ -- the so-called Delzant model of moduli space -- for each genus $g.$ We conclude this note with some basic facts about the moment polytopes of the varieties $\mathcal{V}.$ In particular, we show that the…
The recent two proofs for the (weak) factorization theorem for birational maps, one by Włodarczyk and the other by Abramovich-Karu-Matsuki-Włodarczyk rely on the results of Morelli. The former uses the process for $π$-desingularization (the most subtle part of Morelli's combinatorial algorithm), while the latter uses the strong factorization of toric (toroidal) birational maps directly. This paper provides a coherent account of Morelli's work (and its toroidal extension) clarifying some discrepancies in the original argument.
We give a complete classification of equivariant vector bundles of rank two over smooth complete toric surfaces and construct moduli spaces of such bundles. This note is a direct continuation of an earlier note where we developed a general description of equivariant sheaves on toric varieties. Here we give a first application of that description.
In this note, we prove that on polarized toric manifolds the relative $K$-stability with respect to Donaldson's toric degenerations is a necessary condition for the existence of Calabi's extremal metrics, and also we show that the modified $K$-energy is proper in the space of $G_0$-invariant Kähler metrics for the case of toric surfaces which admit the extremal metrics.
This article gives an overview of toric Fano and toric weak Fano varieties associated to graphs and building sets. We also study some properties of such toric Fano varieties and discuss related topics.
Recently, Novaković conjectured that non-split Brauer-Severi varieties do not admit full strong exceptional collections. In this short note, we explain how a stronger version of this conjecture follows easily from known results on noncommutative motives.
Let X be a compact toric surface. There exists a sequence of torus equivariant blow-ups of X such that the blown-up toric surface obtained admits a cscK metric.
This is an erratum to math.AG/9803126, Tohoku 51 (1999) 489-537. This erratum describes: 1. the failure of the algorithm in [AMR] and [Morelli1] for the strong factorization pointed out by Kalle Karu, 2. the statement of a refined weak factorization theorem for toroidal birational morphisms in [AMR], in the form utilized in [AKMR] for the proof of the weak factorization theorem for general birationla maps, avoiding the use of the above mentioned algorithm for the strong factorization, and 3. a list of corrections for a few other mistakes in [AMR], mostly pointed out by Laurent Bonavero.
In this note we prove that any toric Fano manifold with nef tangent bundle is a product of projective spaces. In particular, it implies that Campana-Peternell conjecture hold for toric manifolds.
In an earlier paper we showed that non-split Brauer--Severi curves do not admit full strong exceptional collections. In the present note we extend this observation and prove that there cannot exist full exceptional collections on non-split Brauer--Severi varieties of dimension $\leq 3$.
We compute orbi-disk invariants of compact Gorenstein semi-Fano toric orbifolds by extending the method used for toric Calabi-Yau orbifolds. As a consequence the orbi-disc potential is analytic over complex numbers.
In this short note, we study the asymptotic Chow polystability of toric Del Pezzo surfaces appear in the moduli space of Kähler-Einstein Fano varieties constructed in [OSS16].
We determine the homeomorphism type of the set of real points of a smooth projective toric surface. This note may serve as an expository introduction to some of the ideas and techniques in C. Delaunay's work on real toric varieties.
This short note solves the following problem: Given a map of normal toric varieties corresponding to a coherent subdivision of a cone, find an ideal such that the given map is the blowup of that ideal.
These notes are based on a series of lectures given by the author at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig. Addressed topics include affine and projective toric varieties, abstract normal toric varieties from fans, divisors on toric varieties and Cox's construction of a toric variety as a GIT quotient. We emphasize the role of toric varieties in solving systems of polynomial equations and provide many computational examples using the Julia package Oscar.jl.
We address the following question: Given a polarized toric surface (S,L), and a general integral curve C of geometric genus g in the linear system |L|, do there exist degenerations of C in |L| to general integral curves of smaller geometric genera? We give an affirmative answer to this question for surfaces associated to h-transverse polygons, provided that the characteristic of the ground field is large enough. We give examples of surfaces in small characteristic, for which the answer to the question is negative. In case the answer is affirmative, we deduce that a general curve C as above is …
In this note, we prove combinatorial formulas for $h^{2,1}$ of prime toric divisors in an arbitrary toric hypersurface Calabi-Yau fourfold $Y_4.$ We show that it is possible to find a toric hypersurface Calabi-Yau in which there are more than $h^{1,1}(Y_4)$ non-perturbative superpotential terms with trivial intermediate Jacobian. Hodge numbers of divisors in toric CICYs are the subjects of the part two.
Toric surface codes are a class of error-correcting codes coming from a lattice polytope defining a two-dimensional toric variety. Previous authors have mostly completed classifications of these toric surface codes with dimension up to $k = 7.$ In this note, we correct an error in the classification of the $k=7$ case started in \cite{HLYZZ}, and disprove one of their conjectures.
F. Block and L. Göttsche introduced refined tropical invariants of toric surfaces that intertwine tropical Gromov-Witten and Welschinger invariants of toric surfaces. L. Göttsche and the first author introduced refined broccoli invariants that intertwine some genus zero descendant tropical invariants and broccoli invariants of toric surfaces. In this note, we extend the refined broccoli invariants to the genus one case.
This note proves the existence of universal rational parametrizations. The description involves homogeneous coordinates on a toric variety coming from a lattice polytope. We first describe how smooth toric varieties lead to universal rational parametrizations of certain projective varieties. We give numerous examples and then discuss what happens in the singular case. We also describe rational maps to smooth toric varieties.
In this note we study linear systems on complete toric varieties $X$ with an invariant point, whose orbit under the action of the automorphism group of $X$ contains the dense torus $T$ of $X$. We give a characterization of such varieties in terms of its defining fan and introduce a new definition of expected dimension of linear systems which consider the contribution given by certain toric subvarieties. Finally, we study degenerations of linear systems on these toric varieties induced by toric degenerations.
Let D be a central division algebra over a field F. We study in this note the rigidity of the motivic decompositions of the Severi-Brauer varieties of D, with respect to the ring of coefficients and to the base field. We first show that if the ring of coefficient is a field, these decompositions only depend on its characteristic. In a second part we show that if D remains division over a field extension E/F, the motivic decompositions of several Severi-Brauer varieties of D remain the same when extending the scalars to E.
This article focuses on the study of toric algebraic statistical models which correspond to toric Del Pezzo surfaces with Du Val singularities. A closed-form for the Maximum Likelihood Estimate of algebraic statistical models which correspond to cubic and quartic toric Del Pezzo surfaces with Du Val singular points is given. Also, we calculate the ML degrees of some toric Del Pezzo surfaces of degree less than or equal to six, which equals the degree of the surface in all the case but one, namely the quintic with two points of type $\mathbb{A}_1$.
The generating functions of the Severi degrees for sufficiently ample line bundles on algebraic surfaces are multiplicative in the topological invariants of the surface and the line bundle. Recently new proofs of this fact were given for toric surfaces by Block, Colley, Kennedy and Liu, Osserman, using tropical geometry and in particular the combinatorial tool of long-edged graphs. In the first part of this paper these results are for P^2 and rational ruled surfaces generalized to refined Severi degrees. In the second part of the paper we give a number of mostly conjectural generalizations of …
In this short note, I point out that results of Ballico and Kool--Shende--Thomas together imply that on $K3$, Enriques, and Abelian surfaces, if $L$ is a very ample and $(2p_a(L)-2g-1)$-spanned line bundle, then the equigeneric Severi variety $V_{g}(L)$ of all curves in $|L|$ having genus $g$ is non-empty, irreducible, of the expected dimension, and its general member is a $(p_a(L)-g)$-nodal curve.
