We determine the homeomorphism type of the set of real points of a smooth projective toric surface. This note may serve as an expository introduction to some of the ideas and techniques in C. Delaunay's work on real toric varieties.
We compute the integral homology (including torsion), the topological K-theory, and the Hodge structure on cohomology of Calabi-Yau threefold hypersurfaces and complete intersections in Gorenstein toric Fano varieties. The methods are purely topological.
We consider the problem of finding an ideal whose blowup defines the Nash blowup of a toric surface and such that its zero locus coincides with the singular set of the toric surface.
Let $X$ be a compact toric variety. Let $Hol$ denote the space of based holomorphic maps from $CP^1$ to $X$ which lie in a fixed homotopy class. Let $Map$ denote the corresponding space of continuous maps. We show that $Hol$ has the same homotopy groups as $Map$ up to some (computable) dimension. The proof uses a description of $Hol$ as a space of configurations of labelled points, where the labels lie in a partial monoid determined by the fan of $X$.
For a complete, smooth toric variety Y, we describe the graded vector space T_Y^1. Furthermore, we show that smooth toric surfaces are unobstructed and that a smooth toric surface is rigid if and only if it is Fano. For a given toric surface we then construct homogeneous deformations by means of Minkowski decompositions of polyhedral subdivisions, compute their images under the Kodaira-Spencer map, and show that they span T_Y^1.
In this paper, we give a method to describe the numerical class of a torus invariant surface on a projective toric manifold. As applications, we can classify toric 2-Fano manifolds of Picard number 2 or of dimension at most 4.
In this paper, we investigate whether the 124 nonsingular toric Fano 4-folds admit totally nondegenerate embeddings from abelian surfaces or not. As a result, we determine the possibilities for such embeddings except for the remaining 21 nonsingular toric Fano 4-folds.
Adapting focal loci techniques used by Chiantini and Lopez, we provide lower bounds on the genera of curves contained in very general surfaces in Gorenstein toric threefolds. We illustrate the utility of these bounds by obtaining results on algebraic hyperbolicity of very general surfaces in toric threefolds.
The $k$-secant degree is studied with a combinatorial approach. A planar toric degeneration of any projective toric surface $X$ corresponds to a regular unimodular triangulation $D$ of the polytope defining $X$. If the secant ideal of the initial ideal with respect to $D$ coincides with the initial ideal of the secant ideal, then $D$ is said to be delightful and the $k$-secant degree of $X$ can be easily computed. All delightful triangulations of toric surfaces having sectional genus $g\leq1$ are completely classified and, for $g\geq2$, a lower bound for the $2$- and $3$-secant degree, by mean…
F. Block and L. Göttsche introduced refined tropical invariants of toric surfaces that intertwine tropical Gromov-Witten and Welschinger invariants of toric surfaces. L. Göttsche and the first author introduced refined broccoli invariants that intertwine some genus zero descendant tropical invariants and broccoli invariants of toric surfaces. In this note, we extend the refined broccoli invariants to the genus one case.
We study the topology of toric maps. We show that if $f\colon X\to Y$ is a proper toric morphism, with $X$ simplicial, then the cohomology of every fiber of $f$ is pure and of Hodge-Tate type. When the map is a fibration, we give an explicit formula for the Betti numbers of the fibers in terms of a relative version of the $f$-vector, extending the usual formula for the Betti numbers of a simplicial complete toric variety. We then describe the Decomposition Theorem for a toric fibration, giving in particular a nonnegative combinatorial invariant attached to each cone in the fan of $Y$, which is…
Toric surface codes are a class of error-correcting codes coming from a lattice polytope defining a two-dimensional toric variety. Previous authors have mostly completed classifications of these toric surface codes with dimension up to $k = 7.$ In this note, we correct an error in the classification of the $k=7$ case started in \cite{HLYZZ}, and disprove one of their conjectures.
In this short note, we study the asymptotic Chow polystability of toric Del Pezzo surfaces appear in the moduli space of Kähler-Einstein Fano varieties constructed in [OSS16].
In the first part of this article we show for some examples of surfaces of general type in toric 3-folds how to construct minimal and canonical models by toric methods explicitly. The examples we study turn out to be surfaces of general type, namely so called Kanev surfaces and Todorov surfaces. We show how properties of our examples of surfaces could be derived directly from properties of some polytopes and we compute the singularities of their canonical models.
This is a collection of results on the topology of toric symplectic manifolds. Using an idea of Borisov, we show that a closed symplectic manifold supports at most a finite number of toric structures. Further, the product of two projective spaces of complex dimension at least two (and with a standard product symplectic form) has a unique toric structure. We then discuss various constructions, using wedging to build a monotone toric symplectic manifold whose center is not the unique point displaceable by probes, and bundles and blow ups to form manifolds with more than one toric structure. The …
Some of the 124 toric Fano 4-folds contain abelian surfaces but most do not: in a few cases it is not known whether they do or not. By elementary methods, with a little computer help, we exclude some more possibilities.
We give detailed descriptions of the period maps of two 2-parameter families of anti-canonical hypersurfaces in toric 3-folds. One of them is related to a Hilbert modular surface, and the other is related to the product of modular curves.
We classify toric log del Pezzo surfaces of Picard number one by introducing the notion, cascades. As an application, we show that if such a surface is Kähler-Einstein, then it should admit a special cascade, and it satisfies the equality of the orbifold Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau inequality, i.e., $K^2 = 3e_{orb}.$
We determine the gonality and the Clifford index for curves on a compact smooth toric surface. Moreover, it is shown that their gonality are computed by pencils on the ambient surface. From the geometrical view point, this means that the gonality can be read off from the lattice polygon associated to the curve.
For $m\in \IN, m\geq 1,$ we determine the irreducible components of the $m-th$ jet scheme of a toric surface $S.$ For $m$ big enough, we connect the number of a class of these irreducible components to the number of exceptional divisors on the minimal resolution of $S.$
Relative BPS state counts for log Calabi-Yau surface pairs were introduced by Gross-Pandharipande-Siebert and conjectured by the authors to be integers. For toric Del Pezzo surfaces, we provide an arithmetic proof of this conjecture, by relating these invariants to the local BPS state counts of the surfaces. The latter were shown to be integers by Peng; and more generally for toric Calabi-Yau threefolds by Konishi.
We give a combinatorial criterion for the tangent bundle on a smooth toric variety to be stable with respect to a given polarisation in terms of the corresponding lattice polytope. Furthermore, we show that for a smooth toric surface and a smooth toric variety of Picard rank 2, there exists an ample line bundle with respect to which the tangent bundle is stable if and only if it is an iterated blow-up of projective space.
We define a series of relative tropical Welschinger-type invariants of real toric surfaces. In the Del Pezzo case, these invariants can be seen as real tropical analogs of relative Gromov-Witten invariants, and are subject to a recursive formula. As application we obtain new formulas for Welschinger invariants of real toric Del Pezzo surfaces.
We determine the integral homology of the orbit space of a maximal compact torus action on the Grassmannian Gr(2,5). Our approach uses the well-known Geometric Invariant Theory of the maximal algebraic torus action on this Grassmannian.
We investigate the possibility of embedding minimal abelian surfaces in smooth toric 4-folds with Picard number 2. The existence of such an embedding imposes conditions on the 4-fold, which we partly describe. On the other hand, we exhibit such embeddings in a special case, using a simple description of morphisms into smooth toric varieties.
We classify the homogeneous polynomials in three variables whose toric polar linear system defines a Cremona transformation. This classification also includes, as a proper subset, the classification of toric surface patches from geometric modeling which have linear precision. Besides the well-known tensor product patches and Bézier triangles, we identify a family of toric patches with trapezoidal shape, each of which has linear precision. Bézier triangles and tensor product patches are special cases of trapezoidal patches.
A foliation is of toric type when it has a combinatorial reduction of singularities. We show that every toric type foliation on (C3, 0), without saddle-nodes, has invariant surface. We extend the argument of Cano-Cerveau, done for the nondicritical case, to the compact dicritical components of the exceptional divisor. These components are projective toric surfaces and the isolated invariant branches of the induced foliation extend to global curves. We build the invariant surface as a germ along the singular locus and those global invariant curves. The result of Ortiz-Rosales-Voronin, about the…
In this article we consider surfaces that are general with respect to a 3- dimensional toric idealistic cluster. In particular, this means that blowing up a toric constellation provides an embedded resolution of singularities for these surfaces. First we give a formula for the topological zeta function directly in terms of the cluster. Then we study the eigenvalues of monodromy. In particular, we derive a useful criterion to be an eigenvalue. In a third part we prove the monodromy and the holomorphy conjecture for these surfaces.
We give a complete classification of equivariant vector bundles of rank two over smooth complete toric surfaces and construct moduli spaces of such bundles. This note is a direct continuation of an earlier note where we developed a general description of equivariant sheaves on toric varieties. Here we give a first application of that description.
We show that the isolated invariant branches globalize to algebraic curves, when we consider weak toric type complex hyperbolic foliations on projective toric ambient surfaces. To do it, we pass through a characterization of weak toric type foliations in terms of "non-degeneracy" conditions, associated to Newton polygons. We also give a description of the relationship between invariant algebraic curves and isolated invariant branches, valid for the case of toric type, by means of the following dichotomy. Either there is a rational first integral and there are no isolated invariant branches or …
For a divisor $D$ on a tropical variety $X$, we define two amounts in order to estimate the value of $h^{0}(X,D)$, which are described by terms of global sections and computed more easily than $h^{0}(X,D)$. As an application of its estimation, we show that a Riemann-Roch inequality holds for smooth tropical toric surfaces.
Let $L$ be an ample line bundle over a smooth projective toric surface $X$. Then $L$ corresponds to a very ample lattice polytope $P$ that encodes many geometric properties of $L$. In this article, by studying $P$, we will give some necessary and sufficient numerical criteria for the adjoint series $|K_X+L|$ to be either nef or (very) ample.
It has been recently shown that the iteration of Nash modification on not necessarily normal toric varieties corresponds to a purely combinatorial algorithm on the generators of the semigroup associated to the toric variety. We will show that for toric surfaces this algorithm stops for certain choices of affine charts of the Nash modification. In addition, we give a bound on the number of steps required for the algorithm to stop in the cases we consider. Let $\C(x_1,x_2)$ be the field of rational functions of a toric surface. Then our result implies that if $ν:\C(x_1,x_2)\rightarrowΓ$ is any v…
By an additive action on an algebraic variety $X$ we mean a regular effective action $\mathbb{G}_a^n\times X\to X$ with an open orbit of the commutative unipotent group $\mathbb{G}_a^n$. In this paper, we give a classification of additive actions on complete toric surfaces.
Lejeune-Jalabert and Reguera computed the geometric Poincare series P_{geom}(T) for toric surface singularities. They raise the question whether this series equals the arithmetic Poincare series. We prove this equality for a class of toric varieties including the surfaces, and construct a counterexample in the general case. We also compute the motivic Igusa Poincare series Q_{geom}(T) for toric surface singularities, using the change of variables formula for motivic integrals, thus answering a second question of Lejeune-Jalabert and Reguera's. The series Q_{geom}(T) contains more information t…
In the theory of algebraic group actions on affine varieties, the concept of a Kempf-Ness set is used to replace the categorical quotient by the quotient with respect to a maximal compact subgroup. By making use of the recent achievements of "toric topology" we show that an appropriate notion of a Kempf-Ness set exists for a class of algebraic torus actions on quasiaffine varieties (coordinate subspace arrangement complements) arising in the Batyrev-Cox "geometric invariant theory" approach to toric varieties. We proceed by studying the cohomology of these "toric" Kempf-Ness sets. In the case …
A Laurent polynomial $f$ in two variables naturally describes a projective curve $C(f)$ on a toric surface. We show that if $C(f)$ is a smooth curve of genus at least 7, then $C(f)$ is not Brill-Noether general. To accomplish this, we classify all Newton polygons that admit such curves whose divisors all have nonnegative Brill-Noether number.
Let X be a smooth projective toric surface, and H^d(X) the Hilbert scheme parametrising the length d zero-dimensional subschemes of X. We compute the rational Chow ring A^*(H^d(X))\_Q. More precisely, if T is the two-dimensional torus contained in X, we compute the rational equivariant Chow ring A\_T^*(H^d(X))\_Q and the usual Chow ring is an explicit quotient of the equivariant Chow ring. The case of some quasi-projective toric surfaces such as the affine plane are described by our method too.
We study the question of whether the blow-ups of toric surfaces of Picard number one at the identity point of the torus are Mori Dream Spaces. For some of these toric surfaces, the question whether the blow-up is a Mori Dream Space is equivalent to countably many planar interpolation problems. We state a conjecture which generalizes a theorem of Gonzalez and Karu. We give new examples and non-examples of Mori Dream Spaces among these blow-ups.
We show that the autoequivalence group of the derived category of any smooth projective toric surface is generated by the standard equivalences and spherical twists obtained from -2-curves. In many cases we give all relations between these generators. We also prove a close link between spherical objects and certain pairs of exceptional objects.
Let $\sE$ be an ample rank $r$ bundle on a smooth toric projective surface, $S$, whose topological Euler characteristic is $e(S)$. In this article, we prove a number of surprisingly strong lower bounds for $c_1(\sE)^2$ and $c_2(\sE)$. We also enumerate the exceptions to either the inequality $c_1(\sE)^2\ge 4e(S)$ or the inequality $c_2(\sE)\ge e(S)$ holding.
This article is the first in a series of two in which we study the vanishing cycles of curves in toric surfaces. We give a list of possible obstructions to contract vanishing cycles within a given complete linear system. Using tropical means, we show that any non-separating simple closed curve is a vanishing cycle whenever none of the listed obstructions appears.
Let X be a smooth projective toric surface and L and M two line bundles on X. If L is ample and M is generated by global sections, then we show that the natural map from H^0(X,L) tensor H^0(X,M) to H^0(X, L tensor M) is surjective. We also consider a generalization to the case when M is an arbitrary line bundle with h^0(X,M) > 0.
