We use a gradient-based optimization scheme to find single-qubit rotations to be interwoven between timesteps of a noisy logical two-qubit entangling gate in order to suppress arbitrary logical and leakage errors in the two-qubit gate. We show how the sequence fidelity is affected by imperfections in the single-qubit operations, as well as by various relative strengths of the logical and leakage noise. Our approach is completely general and system-independent, allowing for application to any two-qubit system regardless of the experimental implementation details.
It is an open question if there are leakage-free entangling Fibonacci braiding gates. We provide evidence to the conjecture for the negative in this paper. We also found a much simpler protocol to generate approximately leakage-free entangling Fibonacci braiding gates than existing algorithms in the literature.
We present a new and simplified two-qubit randomized benchmarking procedure that operates only in the symmetric subspace of a pair of qubits and is well suited for benchmarking trapped-ion systems. By performing benchmarking only in the symmetric subspace, we drastically reduce the experimental complexity, number of gates required, and run time. The protocol is demonstrated on trapped ions using collective single-qubit rotations and the Molmer-Sorenson (MS) interaction to estimate an entangling gate error of $2(1) \times 10^{-3}$. We analyze the expected errors in the MS gate and find that pop…
Significant experimental advances in single-electron silicon spin qubits have opened the possibility of realizing long-range entangling gates mediated by microwave photons. Recently proposed iSWAP gates, however, require tuning qubit energies into resonance and have limited fidelity due to charge noise. We present a novel photon-mediated cross-resonance gate that is consistent with realistic experimental capabilities and requires no resonant tuning. Furthermore, we propose gate sequences capable of suppressing errors due to quasistatic noise for both the cross-resonance and iSWAP gates.
Superconducting transmon qubits comprise one of the most promising platforms for quantum information processing due to their long coherence times and to their scalability into larger qubit networks. However, their weakly anharmonic spectrum leads to spectral crowding in multiqubit systems, making it challenging to implement fast, high-fidelity gates while avoiding leakage errors. To address this challenge, we use a protocol known as SWIPHT [Phys. Rev. B 91, 161405(R) (2015)], which yields smooth, simple microwave pulses designed to suppress leakage without sacrificing gate speed through spectr…
Many realizations of solid-state qubits involve couplings to leakage states lying outside the computational subspace, posing a threat to high-fidelity quantum gate operations. Mitigating leakage errors is especially challenging when the coupling strength is unknown, e.g., when it is caused by noise. Here we show that simple pulse sequences can be used to strongly suppress leakage errors for a qubit embedded in a three-level system. As an example, we apply our scheme to the recently proposed charge quadrupole (CQ) qubit for quantum dots. These results provide a solution to a key challenge for f…
We present a systematic, perturbative method for correcting quantum gates to suppress errors that take the target system out of a chosen subspace. It addresses the generic problem of non-adiabatic errors in adiabatic evolution and state preparation, as well as general leakage errors due to spurious couplings to undesirable states. The method is based on the Magnus expansion: by correcting control pulses, we modify the Magnus expansion of an initially-given, imperfect unitary in such a way that the desired evolution is obtained. Applications to adiabatic quantum state transfer, superconducting …
Leakage errors occur when a quantum system leaves the two-level qubit subspace. Reducing these errors is critically important for quantum error correction to be viable. To quantify leakage errors, we use randomized benchmarking in conjunction with measurement of the leakage population. We characterize single qubit gates in a superconducting qubit, and by refining our use of Derivative Reduction by Adiabatic Gate (DRAG) pulse shaping along with detuning of the pulses, we obtain gate errors consistently below $10^{-3}$ and leakage rates at the $10^{-5}$ level. With the control optimized, we find…

In distributed quantum information processing, flying photons entangle matter qubits confined in cavities. However, when a matter qubit is homogeneously broadened, the strong-coupling regime of cavity QED is typically required, which is hard to realize in actual experimental setups. Here, we show that a high-fidelity entanglement operation is possible even in the weak-coupling regime in which dampings (dephasing, spontaneous emission, and cavity leakage) overwhelm the coherent coupling between a qubit and the cavity. Our proposal enables distributed quantum information processing to be perform…
The stabilizing properties of one-error correcting jump codes are explored under realistic non-ideal conditions. For this purpose the quantum algorithm of the tent-map is decomposed into a universal set of Hamiltonian quantum gates which ensure perfect correction of spontaneous decay processes under ideal circumstances even if they occur during a gate operation. An entanglement gate is presented which is capable of entangling any two logical qubits of different one-error correcting code spaces. With the help of this gate simultaneous spontaneous decay processes affecting physical qubits of dif…
We consider a system consisting of a $Λ$-type atom and a V-type atom, which are individually trapped in two spatially separated cavities that are connected by an optical fibre. We show that an extremely entangled state of the two atoms can be deterministically generated through both photon emission of the $Λ$-type atom and photon absorption of the V-type atom in an ideal situation. The influence of various decoherence processes such as spontaneous emission and photon loss on the fidelity of the entangled state is also investigated. We find that the effect of photon leakage out of the fibre on …
Fibonacci anyons are attractive for use in topological quantum computation because any unitary transformation of their state space can be approximated arbitrarily accurately by braiding. However there is no known braid that entangles two qubits without leaving the space spanned by the two qubits. In other words, there is no known "leakage-free" entangling gate made by braiding. In this paper, we provide a remedy to this problem by supplementing braiding with measurement operations in order to produce an exact controlled rotation gate on two qubits.
We show that the use of shaped pulses improves the fidelity of a Rydberg blockade two-qubit entangling gate by several orders of magnitude compared to previous protocols based on square pulses or optimal control pulses. Using analytical Derivative Removal by Adiabatic Gate (DRAG) pulses that reduce excitation of primary leakage states and an analytical method of finding the optimal Rydberg blockade we generate Bell states with a fidelity of $F>0.9999$ in a 300 K environment for a gate time of only $50\;{\rm ns}$, which is an order of magnitude faster than previous protocols. These results esta…
We analyse the design and optimisation of quantum logic circuits suitable for the experimental demonstration of a three-qubit quantum computation prototype based on optically-controlled, solid-state quantum logic gates. In these gates, the interaction between two qubits carried by the electron-spin of donors is mediated by the optical excitation of a control particle placed in their proximity. First, we use a geometrical approach for analysing the entangling characteristics of these quantum gates. Then, using a genetic programming algorithm, we develop circuits for the refined Deutsch-Jozsa al…
Important tasks in cavity quantum electrodynamics include the generation and control of quantum states of spatially-separated particles distributed in different cavities. An interesting question in this context is how to prepare entanglement among particles located in different cavities, which are important for large-scale quantum information processing. We here consider a multi-cavity system where cavities are coupled to a superconducting (SC) qubit and each cavity hosts many SC qubits. We show that all intra-cavity SC qubits plus the coupler SC qubit can be prepared in an entangled Greenberg…
We propose a family of microwave-activated entangling gates on two capacitively coupled fluxonium qubits. A microwave pulse applied to either qubit at a frequency near the half-frequency of the $|00\rangle - |11\rangle$ transition induces two-photon Rabi oscillations with a negligible leakage outside the computational subspace, owing to the strong anharmonicity of fluxoniums. By adjusting the drive frequency, amplitude, and duration, we obtain the gate family that is locally equivalent to the fermionic-simulation gates such as $\sqrt{\rm SWAP}$-like and controlled-phase gates. The gate error c…

For the four-state protocol of quantum key distribution, optimum sets of probe parameters are calculated for the most general unitary probe in which each individual transmitted photon is made to interact with the probe so that the signal and the probe are left in an entangled state, and projective measurement by the probe, made subsequent to projective measurement by the legitimate receiver, yields information about the signal state. The probe optimization is based on maximizing the Renyi information gain by the probe on corrected data for a given error rate induced by the probe in the legitim…
Engineering entanglement between quantum systems often involves coupling through a bosonic mediator, which should be disentangled from the systems at the operation's end. The quality of such an operation is generally limited by environmental and control noise. One of the prime techniques for suppressing noise is by dynamical decoupling, where one actively applies pulses at a rate that is faster than the typical time scale of the noise. However, for boson-mediated gates, current dynamical decoupling schemes require executing the pulses only when the boson and the quantum systems are disentangle…
We extend recent work on a leakage-protected, adiabatic entangling gate for exchange-only spin qubits [Doherty and Wardrop, PRL 111, 050503 (2013)] by adapting to a setting where single spins are not assumed to be polarized on preparation. Previous gate constructions do not function correctly when "gauge spins" are uninitialized, because the entangling gate has different, non-trivial action in different gauge subspaces. Our construction inherits many of the desirable features of the previous work while addressing the gauge-dependent behavior. Using numerical simulation, we show that the result…
A quantum memory or information processing device is subject to disturbance from its surrounding environment or inevitable leakage due to its contact with other systems. To tackle these problems, several control protocols have been proposed for quantum memory or storage. Among them, the fast-signal control or dynamical decoupling based on external pulse sequences provides a prevailing strategy aimed at suppressing decoherence and preventing the target systems from the leakage or diffusion process. In this paper, we review the applications of this protocol in protecting quantum memory under the…
A system consisting of two single-mode cavities spatially separated and connected by an optical fiber and multiple two-level atoms trapped in the cavities is considered. If the atoms resonantly and collectively interact with the local cavity fields but there is no direct interaction between the atoms, we show that an ideal quantum state transfer and highly reliable quantum swap, entangling, and controlled-Z gates can be deterministically realized between the distant cavities. We find that the operation of state transfer and swap, entangling, and controlled-Z gates can be greatly speeded up as …
Quantum computation requires qubits that satisfy often-conflicting criteria, including scalable control and long-lasting coherence. One approach to creating a suitable qubit is to operate in an encoded subspace of several physical qubits. Though such encoded qubits may be particularly susceptible to leakage out of their computational subspace, they can be insensitive to certain noise processes and can also allow logical control with a single type of entangling interaction while maintaining favorable features of the underlying physical system. Here we demonstrate a qubit encoded in a subsystem …

A triple-quantum-dot system can be operated as either an exchange-only qubit or a resonant-exchange qubit. While it is generally believed that the decisive advantage of the resonant-exchange qubit is the suppression of charge noise because it is operated at a sweet spot, we show that the leakage is also an important factor. Through molecular-orbital-theoretic calculations, we show that when the system is operated in the exchange-only scheme, the leakage to states with double electron occupancy in quantum dots is severe when rotations around the axis 120$^\circ$ from $\hat{z}$ is performed. Whi…
The creation and destruction of entanglement between a pair of interacting two-level detectors accelerating about diametrically opposite points of a circular path is investigated. It is found that any non-zero acceleration has the effect of suppressing the vacuum entanglement and enhancing the acceleration radiation thereby reducing the entangling capacity of the detectors. Given that for large accelerations the acceleration radiation is the dominant effect, we investigate the evolution of a two detector system initially prepared in a Bell state using a perturbative mater equation and treating…
We introduce a new entangling gate between two fixed-frequency qubits statically coupled via a microwave resonator bus which combines the following desirable qualities: all-microwave control, appreciable qubit separation for reduction of crosstalk and leakage errors, and the ability to function as a two-qubit conditional-phase gate. A fixed, always-on interaction is explicitly designed between higher energy (non-computational) states of two transmon qubits, and then a conditional-phase gate is `activated' on the otherwise unperturbed qubit subspace via a microwave drive. We implement this micr…
We demonstrate diabatic two-qubit gates with Pauli error rates down to $4.3(2)\cdot 10^{-3}$ in as fast as 18 ns using frequency-tunable superconducting qubits. This is achieved by synchronizing the entangling parameters with minima in the leakage channel. The synchronization shows a landscape in gate parameter space that agrees with model predictions and facilitates robust tune-up. We test both iSWAP-like and CPHASE gates with cross-entropy benchmarking. The presented approach can be extended to multibody operations as well.
Capacitively coupled semiconductor spin qubits hold promise as the building blocks of a scalable quantum computing architecture with long-range coupling between distant qubits. However, the two-qubit gate fidelities achieved in experiments to date have been severely limited by decoherence originating from charge noise and hyperfine interactions with nuclear spins, and are currently unacceptably low for any conceivable multi-qubit gate operations. Here, we present control protocols that implement two-qubit entangling gates while substantially suppressing errors due to both types of noise. These…

High-fidelity single- and two-qubit gates are essential building blocks for a fault-tolerant quantum computer. While there has been much progress in suppressing single-qubit gate errors in superconducting qubit systems, two-qubit gates still suffer from error rates that are orders of magnitude higher. One limiting factor is the residual ZZ-interaction, which originates from a coupling between computational states and higher-energy states. While this interaction is usually viewed as a nuisance, here we experimentally demonstrate that it can be exploited to produce a universal set of fast single…
Off-resonant error for a driven quantum system refers to interactions due to the input drives having non-zero spectral overlap with unwanted system transitions. For the cross-resonance gate, this includes leakage as well as off-diagonal computational interactions that lead to bit-flip error on the control qubit. In this work, we quantify off-resonant error, with more focus on the less studied off-diagonal control interactions, for a direct CNOT gate implementation. Our results are based on numerical simulation of the dynamics, while we demonstrate the connection to time-dependent Schrieffer-Wo…
Neutral atom array serves as an ideal platform to study the quantum logic gates, where intense efforts have been devoted to improve the two-qubit gate fidelity. We report our recent findings in constructing a different type of two-qubit controlled-PHASE quantum gate protocol with neutral atoms enabled by Rydberg blockade, which aims at both robustness and high-fidelity. It relies upon modulated driving pulse with specially tailored smooth waveform to gain appropriate phase accumulations for quantum gates. The major features include finishing gate operation within a single pulse, not necessaril…
