We present an approach for entangling spin qubits via capacitive coupling mediated by an ac electric field-driven multielectron mediator quantum dot. To illustrate this method, we consider the case of a driven two-electron dot that mediates entanglement between resonant exchange qubits defined in three-electron triple quantum dots, which enable direct capacitive coupling and interaction with microwave fields via intrinsic spin-charge mixing. The method can also be applied to other types of spin qubits that can be coupled capacitively. We show that this approach leads to rapid, single-pulse universal entangling gates for resonant exchange qubits that are activated via the drive on the mediator dot. Unlike conventional tunneling-based two-qubit gates between exchange-only qubits, the capacitive interaction-based gates we describe do not require an extensive sequence of pulses to mitigate leakage. We describe how this drive-activated local entangling approach can be integrated with the driven sideband-based long-range approach for cavity-mediated entangling gates developed in our previous work in order to enable modularity for spin-based quantum information processing.
A theoretical model for the phonon-mediated off-resonant coupling between a quantum dot and a cavity, under resonant excitation of the quantum dot, is presented. We show that the coupling is caused by electron-phonon interaction in the quantum dot and is enhanced by the cavity. We analyze recently observed resonant quantum dot spectroscopic data by our theoretical model.
We present experimental results showing phonon-mediated coupling between two quantum dots embedded inside a photonic crystal microcavity. With only one of the dots being spectrally close to the cavity, we observe both frequency up-conversion and down-conversion of the pump light via a $\sim1.2$ THz phonon. We demonstrate this process for both weak and strong regimes of dot-cavity coupling, and provide a simple theoretical model explaining our observations.
We investigate photon-mediated transport processes in a hybrid circuit-QED structure consisting of two double quantum dots coupled to a common microwave cavity. Under suitable resonance conditions, electron transport in one double quantum dot is facilitated by the transport in the other dot via photon-mediated processes through the cavity. We calculate the average current in the quantum dots, the mean cavity photon occupation, and the current cross-correlations with both a full numerical simulation and a recursive perturbation scheme that allows us to include the influence of the cavity order-…
We investigate the electric manipulation of a single electron spin in a single gate-defined quantum dot. We observe that so-far neglected differences between the hyperfine and spin-orbit mediated electric dipole spin resonance conditions have important consequences at high magnetic fields. In experiments using adiabatic rapid passage to invert the electron spin, we observe an unusually wide and asymmetric response as a function of magnetic field. Simulations support the interpretation of the lineshape in terms of four different resonance conditions. These findings may lead to isotope-selective…
Scalable architectures for quantum information technologies require to selectively couple long-distance qubits while suppressing environmental noise and cross-talk. In semiconductor materials, the coherent coupling of a single spin on a quantum dot to a cavity hosting fermionic modes offers a new solution to this technological challenge. Here, we demonstrate coherent coupling between two spatially separated quantum dots using an electronic cavity design that takes advantage of whispering-gallery modes in a two-dimensional electron gas. The cavity-mediated long-distance coupling effectively min…
We theoretically study the generation of quantum correlations in a hybrid system composed by two interacting semiconductor quantum dots mediated by a metal nanoparticle and coupled to an external laser field. Interactions present in the hybrid system are treated using a semiclassical approximation except for the direct dipole-dipole interaction. We report the entanglement of formation, which gives information about entanglement quantum correlations, for continuous wave and pulsed driving applied fields. We have found that for proper values of the physical and geometrical parameters of the hybr…
Pure dephasing is widely used in the literature to explain experimental observations on quantum dots in cavities. In many cases, its use is not enough and extra terms need to be "fictitiously" added to accomplish with the observed data as it is the case of cavity pumping of an unknown source. Here we controvert the validity of the pure dephasing mechanism as a source of decoherence and present a theoretical study based on the phonon-mediated coupling that can explain the emission spectrum and photon auto- and cross-correlation results in recent experiments without the need of any artificial as…
We investigate pump-induced exciton inversion in a quantum-dot cavity system with continuous wave drive. Using a polaron-based master equation, we demonstrate excited-state populations above 0.9 for an InAs dot at a phonon bath temperature of 4K. In an exciton-driven system, the dominant mechanism is incoherent excitation from the phonon bath. For cavity driving, the mechanism is phonon-mediated switching between ground- and excited-state branches of the ladder of photon states, as quantum trajectory simulations clearly show. The exciton inversion as a function of detuning is found to be quali…
Understanding the spin dephasing mechanism is of fundamental importance in all potential applications of the spin qubit. Here we demonstrate a spin dephasing mechanism in semiconductor quantum dot due to the $1/f$ charge noise. The spin-charge interaction is mediated by the interplay between the spin-orbit coupling and the asymmetrical quantum dot confining potential. The dephasing rate is proportional to both the strength of the spin-orbit coupling and the degree of the asymmetry of the confining potential. For parameters typical of the InSb, InAs, and GaAs quantum dots with a moderate well-h…
We show unusual cooperative two-photon resonance between two-modes of field inside a photonic crystal cavity. The two-photon resonance occurs when two off resonant quantum dots emit one photon in each cavity mode and de-excite simultaneously. In the presence of phonon coupling the conditions for two-photon resonance change significantly. Using such two-photon two-mode interaction we propose to generate entangled state of two qutrits. The basis of a qutrit are formed by the state of the cavity mode containing $0$, $1$ and $2$ photons. We also discuss effect of phonon coupling on negativity of t…
Long range interaction between distant spins is an important building block for the realization of large quantum-dot network in which couplings between pairs of spins can be selectively addressed. Recent experiments on coherent logical states oscillation between remote spins facilitated by intermediate electron states has paved the first step for large scale quantum information processing. Reaching this ultimate goal requires extensive studies on the superexchange interaction on different quantum-dot spatial arrangements and electron configurations. Here, we consider a linear triple-quantum-do…
We consider the correlated parallel transport through two quantum dots which are tunnel-coupled to the ends of a semiconductor nanowire where the Majorana bound states (MBSs) may emerge under proper conditions. In terms of the cross-correlation of currents, we reveal unusual behaviors originated from the nonlocal MBSs, including such as the distinct symmetry and antisymmetry of the spectral density in response to the dot-level modulations, and the vanished cross correlation occurred when any of the dot-levels is in resonance with the Majorana zero mode.
Achieving strong coupling between light and matter is usually a challenge in Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics (cQED), especially in solid state systems. For this reason is useful taking advantage of alternative approaches to reach this regime, and then, generate reliable quantum polaritons. In this work we study a system composed of a quantized single mode of a mechanical resonator interacting linearly with both a single mode nanocavity and a two-level single quantum dot. In particular, we focus on the behavior of the indirect light-matter interaction when the phonon mode interfaces both parts. …
Recent experiments with silicon qubits demonstrated strong coupling of a microwave resonator to the spin of a single electron in a double quantum dot, opening up the possibility of long-range spin-spin interactions. We present our theoretical calculation of effective interactions between distant quantum dot spins coupled by a resonator, and propose a protocol for fast, high-fidelity two-qubit gates consistent with experimentally demonstrated capabilities. Our simulations show that, in the presence of noise, spin-spin entangling gates significantly outperform cavity-mediated gates on charge qub…
Coherence has been remaining a key resource for numerous applications of quantum physics ranging from quantum metrology to quantum information. Here, we report a theoretical work on how maximally created coherence results in the squeezing of cavity field coupled to a coherently driven single quantum dot. We employ a recently developed polaron master equation theory for accurately incorporating the impact of exciton-phonon coupling on squeezing.
Significant experimental advances in single-electron silicon spin qubits have opened the possibility of realizing long-range entangling gates mediated by microwave photons. Recently proposed iSWAP gates, however, require tuning qubit energies into resonance and have limited fidelity due to charge noise. We present a novel photon-mediated cross-resonance gate that is consistent with realistic experimental capabilities and requires no resonant tuning. Furthermore, we propose gate sequences capable of suppressing errors due to quasistatic noise for both the cross-resonance and iSWAP gates.
Quantum gates between spin qubits can be implemented leveraging the natural Heisenberg exchange interaction between two electrons in contact with each other. This interaction is controllable by electrically tailoring the overlap between electronic wavefunctions in quantum dot systems, as long as they occupy neighbouring dots. An alternative route is the exploration of superexchange - the coupling between remote spins mediated by a third idle electron that bridges the distance between quantum dots. We experimentally demonstrate direct exchange coupling and provide evidence for second neighbour …
We investigate phonon-induced spin and charge relaxation mediated by spin-orbit and hyperfine interactions for a single electron confined within a double quantum dot. A simple toy model incorporating both direct decay to the ground state of the double dot and indirect decay via an intermediate excited state yields an electron spin relaxation rate that varies non-monotonically with the detuning between the dots. We confirm this model with experiments performed on a GaAs double dot, demonstrating that the relaxation rate exhibits the expected detuning dependence and can be electrically tuned ove…
We theoretically investigate the spin dynamics of a heavy hole confined to an unstrained III-V semiconductor quantum dot and interacting with a narrowed nuclear-spin bath. We show that band hybridization leads to an exponential decay of hole-spin superpositions due to hyperfine-mediated nuclear pair flips, and that the accordant single-hole-spin decoherence time T2 can be tuned over many orders of magnitude by changing external parameters. In particular, we show that, under experimentally accessible conditions, it is possible to suppress hyperfine-mediated nuclear-pair-flip processes so strong…
We describe how a structured photonic medium controls the spontaneous emission rate from an excited quantum dot in the presence of electron-phonon coupling. We analyze this problem using a polaron transformed master equation and we consider specific examples of a photonic crystal cavity and a coupled cavity waveguide. We find that when the relaxation times of the photon and phonon baths are comparable, phonons influence spontaneous emission in a non-trivial way. We demonstrate why and how the broadband frequency dependence of the local photon density of states determines the photon emission ra…
Fast operations, an easily tunable Hamiltonian, and a straightforward two-qubit interaction make charge qubits a useful tool for benchmarking device performance and exploring two-qubit dynamics. Here, we tune a linear chain of four Si/SiGe quantum dots to host two double dot charge qubits. Using the capacitance between the double dots to mediate a strong two-qubit interaction, we simultaneously drive coherent transitions to generate correlations between the qubits. We then sequentially pulse the qubits to drive one qubit conditionally on the state of the other. We find that a conditional $π$-r…
We propose to use the spin-orbit interaction as a means to control electron spins in quantum dots, enabling both single qubit and two qubit operations. Very fast single qubit operations may be achieved by temporarily displacing the electrons. For two qubit operations the coupling mechanism is based on a combination of the spin-orbit coupling and the mutual long-ranged Coulomb interaction. Compared to existing schemes using the exchange coupling, the spin-orbit induced coupling is less sensitive to random electrical fluctuations in the electrodes defining the quantum dots.
Recent experiments have demonstrated that for a quantum dot in an optical resonator off-resonant cavity mode emission can occur even for detunings of the order of 10 meV. We show that Coulomb mediated Auger processes based on additional carriers in delocalized states can facilitate this far off-resonant emission. Using a novel theoretical approach for a non-perturbative treatment of the Auger-assisted quantum-dot carrier recombination, we present numerical calculations of the far off-resonant cavity feeding rate and cavity mean photon number confirming efficient coupling at higher densities of…
The realization of a coherent interface between distant charge or spin qubits in semiconductor quantum dots is an open challenge for quantum information processing. Here we demonstrate both resonant and non-resonant photon-mediated coherent interactions between double quantum dot charge qubits separated by several tens of micrometers. We present clear spectroscopic evidence of the collective enhancement of the resonant coupling of two qubits. With both qubits detuned from the resonator we observe exchange coupling between the qubits mediated by virtual photons. In both instances pronounced bri…
We study the generation of quantum correlations between two excitonic quantum dot qubits due to their interaction with the same phonon environment. Such generation results from the fact that during the pure dephasing process at finite temperatures, each exciton becomes entangled with the phonon environment. We find that for a wide range of temperatures quantum correlations are created due to the interaction. The temperature-dependence of the amount of correlations created displays a trade-off type behaviour; for small temperatures the phonon-induced distrubance of the qubit states is too small…
Self-assembled quantum dots are ideal structures in which to test theories of open quantum systems: Confined exciton states can be coherently manipulated and their decoherence properties are dominated by interactions with acoustic phonons. We here describe the interaction of a pair of un-coupled, driven, quantum dot excitons with a common phonon environment, and find that this coupling effectively generates two kinds of interaction between the two quantum dots: An elastic coupling mediated by virtual phonons and an inelastic coupling mediated by real phonons. We show that both of these interac…
With the assistance of a pair of Majorana fermions, we propose schemes to entangle two quantum dots by Lyapunov control in the charge and spin degrees of freedom. Four different schemes are considered, i.e., the teleportation scheme, the crossed Andreev reflection scheme, the intradot spin flip scheme, and the scheme beyond the intradot spin flip. We demonstrate that the entanglement can be generated by modulating the chemical potential of quantum dots with square pulses, which is easily realized in practice. In contrast to Lyapunov control, the preparation of entangled states by adiabatic pas…
We describe high-fidelity entangling gates between singlet-triplet qubits (STQs) which are coupled via one quantum state (QS). The QS can be provided by a quantum dot itself or by another confined system. The orbital energies of the QS are tunable using an electric gate close to the QS, which changes the interactions between the STQs independent of their single-qubit parameters. Short gating sequences exist for the controlled NOT (CNOT) operations. We show that realistic quantum dot setups permit excellent entangling operations with gate infidelities below $10^{-3}$, which is lower than the qu…
We report on recent progress towards single photon sources based on quantum dot and quantum post nanostructures which are manipulated using surface acoustic waves. For this concept acoustic charge conveyance in a quantum well is used to spatially separate electron and hole pairs and transport these in the plane of the quantum well. When conveyed to the location of a quantum dot or quantum post these carriers are sequentially captured into the confined levels. Their radiative decays gives rise to the emission of a train of single photons. Three different approaches using (i) strain- induced and…
We study relaxation of a moving spin qubit caused by phonon noise. As we vary the speed of the qubit, we observe several interesting features in spin relaxation and the associated phonon emission, induced by Doppler effect. In particular, in the supersonic regime, the phonons emitted by the relaxing qubit is concentrated along certain directions, similar to the shock waves produced in classical Cherenkov effect. As the speed of the moving qubit increases from the subsonic regime to the supersonic regime, the qubit experiences a peak in the spin relaxation rate near the speed of sound, which we…
We consider two qubits interacting by means of an optical cavity, where each qubit is represented by a single electron spin confined to a quantum dot. It is known that electron spins in III-V semiconductor quantum dots are affected by the decoherence due to the hyperfine interaction with nuclear spins. Here we show that the interaction between two qubits is influenced by the Overhauser field as well. Starting from an unpolarizied nuclear ensemble, we investigate the dependance of the fidelities for two-qubit gates on the Overhauser field. We include the hyperfine interaction perturbatively to …
Solid state spin qubits are promising candidates for the realization of a quantum computer due to their long coherence times and easy electrical manipulation. However, spin-spin interactions, which are needed for entangling gates, have only limited range as they generally rely on tunneling between neighboring quantum dots. This severely constrains scalability. Proposals to extend the interaction range generally focus on coherent electron transport between dots or on extending the coupling range. Here, we study a setup where such an extension is obtained by using a superconductor as a quantum m…
The Heisenberg exchange interaction between neighboring quantum dots allows precise voltage control over spin dynamics, due to the ability to precisely control the overlap of orbital wavefunctions by gate electrodes. This allows the study of fundamental electronic phenomena and finds applications in quantum information processing. Although spin-based quantum circuits based on short-range exchange interactions are possible, the development of scalable, longer-range coupling schemes constitutes a critical challenge within the spin-qubit community. Approaches based on capacitative coupling and ca…
The recent realization of a coherent interface between a single electron in a silicon quantum dot and a single photon trapped in a superconducting cavity opens the way for implementing photon-mediated two-qubit entangling gates. In order to couple a spin to the cavity electric field some type of spin-charge hybridization is needed, which impacts spin control and coherence. In this work we propose a cavity-mediated two-qubit gate and calculate cavity-mediated entangling gate fidelities in the dispersive regime, accounting for errors due to the spin-charge hybridization, as well as photon- and p…
Implementations for quantum computing require fast single- and multi-qubit quantum gate operations. In the case of optically controlled quantum dot qubits theoretical designs for long-range two- or multi-qubit operations satisfying all the requirements in quantum computing are not yet available. We have developed a design for a fast, long-range two-qubit gate mediated by a photonic microcavity mode using excited states of the quantum dot-cavity system that addresses these needs. This design does not require identical qubits, it is compatible with available optically induced single qubit operat…
We theoretically study the non-equilibrium correlations and entanglement between distant semiconductor qubits in a one-dimensional coupled-mechanical-resonator chain. Each qubit is defined by a double quantum dot (DQD) and embedded in a mechanical resonator. The two qubits can be coupled, correlated and entangled through phonon transfer along the resonator chain. We calculate the non-equilibrium correlations and steady-state entanglement at different phonon-phonon coupling rates, and find a maximal steady entanglement induced by a population inversion. The results suggest that highly tunable c…
We present a feasible scheme for performing an optically controlled phase gate between two conduction electron spin qubits in adjacent self assembled quantum dots. Interaction between the dots is mediated by the tunneling of the valence hole state which is activated only by applying a laser pulse of the right polarization and frequency. Combining the hole tunneling with the Pauli blocking effect, we obtain conditional dynamics for the two quantum dots, which is the essence of our gating operations. Our results are of explicit relevance to the recent generation of vertically stacked self-assemb…
We demonstrate off-resonant coupling between a single quantum dot and a nanobeam photonic crystal cavity, under resonant excitation of the quantum dot or the cavity. These results are consistent with previous descriptions of off-resonant coupling as an incoherent phonon-mediated process. The extension of this phenomenon to a nanobeam photonic crystal cavity presents interesting possibilities for coherent control of this interaction by tailoring the phonon density of states.
We investigate decoherence due to pure dephasing of a localized spin qubit interacting with a nuclear spin bath. Although in the limit of a very large magnetic field the only decoherence mechanism is spectral diffusion due to dipolar flip-flops of nuclear spins, with decreasing field the hyperfine-mediated interactions between the nuclear spins become important. We take advantage of their long-range nature, and resum the leading terms in an 1/N expansion of the decoherence time-evolution function (N, being the number of nuclear spins interacting appreciably with the electron spin, is large). F…
Entangling gates for electron spins in semiconductor quantum dots are generally based on exchange, a short-ranged interaction that requires wavefunction overlap. Coherent spin-photon coupling raises the prospect of using photons as long-distance interconnects for spin qubits. Realizing a key milestone for spin-based quantum information processing, we demonstrate microwave-mediated spin-spin interactions between two electrons that are physically separated by more than 4 mm. Coherent spin-photon coupling is demonstrated for each individual spin using microwave transmission spectroscopy. An enhan…
We demonstrate the extension of coherence between all four two-electron spin ground states of an InAs quantum dot molecule (QDM) via non-local suppression of nuclear spin fluctuations in both constituent quantum dots (QDs), while optically addressing only the upper QD transitions. Long coherence times are revealed through dark-state spectroscopy as resulting from nuclear spin locking mediated by the exchange interaction between the QDs. Lineshape analysis provides the first measurement of the quieting of the Overhauser field distribution correlating with reduced nuclear spin fluctuations.
The electron spin in a semiconductor quantum dot can be coherently controlled by an external electric field, an effect called electric-dipole spin resonance (EDSR). Several mechanisms can give rise to the EDSR effect, among which there is a hyperfine mechanism, where the spin-electric coupling is mediated by the electron-nucleus hyperfine interaction. Here, we investigate the influence of frequency modulation (FM) on the spin-flip efficiency. Our results reveal that FM plays an important role in the hyperfine mechanism. Without FM, the electric field almost cannot flip the electron spin; the s…
The electronic spin degrees of freedom in semiconductors typically have decoherence times that are several orders of magnitude longer than other relevant timescales. A solid-state quantum computer based on localized electron spins as qubits is therefore of potential interest. Here, a scheme that realizes controlled interactions between two distant quantum dot spins is proposed. The effective long-range interaction is mediated by the vacuum field of a high finesse microcavity. By using conduction-band-hole Raman transitions induced by classical laser fields and the cavity-mode, parallel control…
Motivated by the need of quantum measurement of Majorana qubits and surface-code stabilizers, we analyze the performance of a double-dot interferometer under the influence of environment noise. The double-dot setup design allows accounting for the full multiple tunneling process between the dots through the Majorana island, within a master equation approach. In the co-tunneling regime, which results in a Majorana-mediated effective coupling between the dots, the master equation approach allows us to obtain analytic solutions for the measurement currents. The measurement quality, characterized …
In a typical quantum circuit, nonlocal quantum gates are applied to nonproximal qubits. If the underlying physical interactions are short-range (e.g., exchange interactions between spins), intermediate swap operations must be introduced, thus increasing the circuit depth. Here we develop a class of "mediated" gates for spin qubits, which act on nonproximal spins via intermediate ancilla qubits. At the end of the operation, the ancillae return to their initial states. We show how these mediated gates can be used (1) to generate arbitrary quantum states and (2) to construct arbitrary quantum gat…
Because of their long coherence times and potential for scalability, semiconductor quantum-dot spin qubits hold great promise for quantum information processing. However, maintaining high connectivity between quantum-dot spin qubits, which favor linear arrays with nearest neighbor coupling, presents a challenge for large-scale quantum computing. In this work, we present evidence for long-distance spin-chain-mediated superexchange coupling between electron spin qubits in semiconductor quantum dots. We weakly couple two electron spins to the ends of a two-site spin chain. Depending on the spin s…
A scalable quantum information processing architecture based on silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor technology is presented, combining quantum hardware elements from planar and 3D silicon-on-insulator technologies. This architecture is expressed in the ``unit cell'' approach, where tiling cells in two dimensions and allowing inter-cellular nearest-neighbour interactions makes the architecture compatible with the surface code for fault tolerant quantum computation. The architecture utilises global control methods, substantially reducing processor complexity with scale: Single-qubit control is ach…
We investigate spin relaxation in a silicon double quantum dot via leakage current through Pauli blockade as a function of interdot detuning and magnetic field. A dip in leakage current as a function of magnetic field on a \sim 40 mT field scale is attributed to spin-orbit mediated spin relaxation. On a larger (\sim 400 mT) field scale, a peak in leakage current is seen in some, but not all, Pauli-blocked transitions, and is attributed to spin-flip cotunneling. Both dip and peak structure show good agreement between theory and experiment.
The purpose of this paper is to present a comprehensive study of a coherent feedback network where the main component consists of two distant double quantum dot (DQD) qubits which are directly coupled to a cavity. This main component has recently been physically realized (van Woerkom, {\it et al.}, Microwave photon-mediated interactions between semiconductor qubits, Physical Review X, 8(4):041018, 2018). The feedback loop is closed by cascading this main component with a beamsplitter. The dynamics of this coherent feedback network is studied from three perspectives. First, an analytic form of …
Long-distance two-qubit coupling, mediated by a superconducting resonator, is a leading paradigm for performing entangling operations in a quantum computer based on spins in semiconducting materials. Here, we demonstrate a novel, controllable spin-photon coupling based on a longitudinal interaction between a spin qubit and a resonator. We show that coupling a singlet-triplet qubit to a high-impedance superconducting resonator can produce the desired longitudinal coupling when the qubit is driven near the resonator's frequency. We measure the energy splitting of the qubit as a function of the d…
Efficient transduction of electromagnetic signals between different frequency scales is an essential ingredient for modern communication technologies as well as for the emergent field of quantum information processing. Recent advances in waveguide photonics have enabled a breakthrough in light-matter coupling, where individual two-level emitters are strongly coupled to individual photons. Here we propose a scheme which exploits this coupling to boost the performance of transducers between low-frequency signals and optical fields operating at the level of individual photons. Specifically, we de…
We study dynamics of the interaction between two weak light beams mediated by a strongly coupled quantum dot-photonic crystal cavity system. First, we perform all optical switching of a weak continuous-wave signal with a pulsed control beam, and then perform switching between two pulsed beams (40ps pulses) at the single photon level. Our results show that the quantum dot-nanocavity system creates strong, controllable interactions at the single photon level.
Universal set of quantum gates are realized from the conduction-band electron spin qubits of quantum dots embedded in a microcavity via two-channel Raman interaction. All of the gate operations are independent of the cavity mode states, \emph{i.e.}, insensitive to the thermal cavity field. Individual addressing and effective switch of the cavity mediated interaction are directly possible here. Meanwhile, gate operations also can be carried out in parallel. The simple realization of needed interaction for selective qubits makes current scenario more suitable for scalable quantum computation.
