Continuum spacetime is expected to emerge via phase transition in discrete approaches to quantum gravity. A promising example is tensorial group field theory but its phase diagram remains an open issue. The results of recent attempts in terms of the functional renormalization group method remain inconclusive since they are restricted to truncations of low order. We overcome this barrier with a local-potential approximation for $\textrm{U}(1)$ tensor fields at arbitrary rank $r$ focusing on a specific class of so-called cyclic-melonic interactions. Projecting onto constant field configurations, we obtain the full set of renormalization-group flow equations. At large cut-offs we find equivalence with $r-1$ dimensional $\textrm{O}(N)$ scalar field theory in the large-$N$ limit, modified by a tensor-specific, relatively large anomalous dimension. However, on small length scales there is equivalence with the corresponding scalar field theory with vanishing dimension and, thus, no phase transition. This is confirmed by numerical analysis of the full non-autonomous equations where we always find symmetry restoration. The essential reason for this effect are isolated zero modes. This result should therefore be true for tensor field theories on any compact domain and including any tensor-invariant interactions. Thus, group field theories with non-compact degrees of freedom will be necessary to describe a phase transition to continuum spacetime.
In this paper, we use the exact renormalisation in the context of tensor models and tensorial group field theories. As a byproduct, we rederive Gaussian universality for random tensors and provide a general power counting for Abelian tensorial field theories with a closure constraint, leading us to a only five renormalizable theories.
We address in this paper the issue of renormalizability for SU(2) Tensorial Group Field Theories (TGFT) with geometric Boulatov-type conditions in three dimensions. We prove that tensorial interactions up to degree 6 are just renormalizable without any anomaly. Our new models define the renormalizable TGFT version of the Boulatov model and provide therefore a new approach to quantum gravity in three dimensions. Among the many new technical results established in this paper are a general classification of just renormalizable models with gauge invariance condition, and in particular concerning p…
We develop the functional renormalization group formalism for a tensorial group field theory with closure constraint, in the case of an Abelian just renormalizable model with quartic interactions. The method allows us to obtain a closed but non-autonomous system of differential equations which describe the renormalization group flow of the couplings beyond perturbation theory. The explicit dependence of the beta functions on the running scale is due to the existence of an external scale in the model, the radius of the unit circle. We study the occurrence of fixed points and their critical prop…
We tackle the issue of renormalizability for Tensorial Group Field Theories (TGFT) including gauge invariance conditions, with the rigorous tool of multi-scale analysis, to prepare the ground for applications to quantum gravity models. In the process, we define the appropriate generalization of some key QFT notions, including: connectedness, locality and contraction of (high) subgraphs. We also define a new notion of Wick ordering, corresponding to the subtraction of (maximal) melonic tadpoles. We then consider the simplest examples of dynamical 4-dimensional TGFT with gauge invariance conditi…
We remark the importance of adding suitable pre-geometric content to tensor models, obtaining what has recently been called tensorial group field theories, to have a formalism that could describe the structure and dynamics of quantum spacetime. We also review briefly some recent results concerning the definition of such pre-geometric content, and of models incorporating it.
In this paper we consider the complete momentum-independent quartic order truncation for the effective average action of a real Abelian rank 3 tensorial group field theory. This complete truncation includes non-melonic as well as double-trace interactions. In the usual functional renormalization group perspective, the inclusion of more operators that belong to the underlying theory space corresponds to an improvement of the truncation of the effective average action. We show that the inclusion of non-melonic and double-trace operators in the truncation brings subtleties. In particular, we disc…
We study a model of Tensorial Group Field Theory (TGFT) on $\mathbb{R}^3$ from the point of view of the Functional Renormalisation Group. This is the first attempt to apply a renormalisation procedure to a TGFT model defined over a non-compact group manifold. IR divergences (with respect to the metric on $\mathbb{R}$) coming from the non-compactness of the group are regularised via compactification, and a thermodynamic limit is then taken. We identify then IR and UV fixed points of the RG flow and find strong hints of a phase transition of the TGFT system from a symmetric to a broken or conden…
The nontrivial fixed point discovered for $ϕ^4$-marginal couplings in tensorial group field theories have been showed to be incompatible with Ward-Takahashi identities. In this previous analysis we have stated that the case of models with interactions of order greater than four could probably lead to a fixed point compatible with local Ward's identities. In this paper we focus on a rank-4 Abelian $ϕ^6$-just renormalizable tensorial group field theory and describe the renormalization group flow over the sub-theory space where Ward constraint is satisfied along the flow, by using an improved ver…
The Loop Vertex Expansion (LVE) is a constructive technique using canonical combinatorial tools. It works well for quantum field theories without renormalization, which is the case of the field theory studied in this paper. Tensorial Group Field Theories (TGFT) are a new class of field theories proposed to quantize gravity. This paper is devoted to a very simple TGFT for rank three tensors with U(1)group and quartic interactions, hence nicknamed $U(1)$-$T^4_3$. It has no ultraviolet divergence, and we show, with the LVE, that it is Borel summable in its coupling constant.
In this paper we provide the closed equations that satisfy two-point correlation functions of the rank 3 and 4 tensorial group field theory. The formulation of the present problem extends the method used by Grosse and Wulkenhaar in [arXiv 0909.1389] to the tensor case. Ward-Takahashi identities and Schwinger-Dyson equations are combined to establish a nonlinear integral equation for the two-point functions. In the 3D case the solution of this equation is given perturbatively at second order of the coupling constant.
The $D$-colored version of tensor models has been shown to admit a large $N$-limit expansion. The leading contributions result from so-called melonic graphs which are dual to the $D$-sphere. This is a note about the Schwinger-Dyson equations of the tensorial $φ^{4}_{5}$-model (with propagator $1/{\bf p}^{2}$) and their melonic approximation. We derive the master equations for two- and four-point correlation functions and discuss their solution.
We introduce a tensorial group field theory endowed with weighted interaction terms of the form $p^{2a} ϕ^4$. The model can be seen as a field theory over $d=3,4$ copies of $U(1)$ where formal powers of Laplacian operators, namely $Δ^{a}$, $a>0$, act on tensorial $ϕ^4$-interactions producing, after Fourier transform, $p^{2a}ϕ^4$ interactions. Using multi-scale analysis, we provide a power counting theorem for this type of models. A new quantity depending on the incidence matrix between vertices and faces of Feynman graphs is invoked in the degree of divergence of amplitudes. As a result, gener…
In the tensorial group field theory approach to quantum gravity, the theory is based on discrete building blocks and continuum spacetime is expected to emerge from their collective dynamics, possibly at criticality, via a phase transition. On a compact group of fixed volume this can be expected to be only possible in a large-volume or thermodynamic limit. Here we show how phase transitions are possible in TGFTs in two cases: a) considering the non-local group degrees of freedom on a non-compact Lie group instead of a compact one (or taking a large-volume limit of a compact group); b) in models…
This article provides a Wilsonian description of the perturbatively renormalizable Tensorial Group Field Theory introduced in arXiv:1303.6772 [hep-th] (Commun. Math. Phys. 330, 581-637). It is a rank-3 model based on the gauge group SU(2), and as such is expected to be related to Euclidean quantum gravity in three dimensions. By means of a power-counting argument, we introduce a notion of dimensionality of the free parameters defining the action. General flow equations for the dimensionless bare coupling constants can then be derived, in terms of a discretely varying cut-off, and in which all …
In this thesis, we study the structure of Group Field Theories (GFTs) from the point of view of renormalization theory. Such quantum field theories are found in approaches to quantum gravity related to Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) on the one hand, and to matrix models and tensor models on the other hand. They model quantum space-time, in the sense that their Feynman amplitudes label triangulations, which can be understood as transition amplitudes between LQG spin network states. The question of renormalizability is crucial if one wants to establish interesting GFTs as well-defined (perturbative)…
In this paper we continue our program of non-pertubative constructions of tensorial group field theories (TGFT). We prove analyticity and Borel summability in a suitable domain of the coupling constant of the simplest super-renormalizable TGFT which contains some ultraviolet divergencies, namely the color-symmetric quartic melonic rank-four model with Abelian $U(1)$ gauge invariance, nicknamed $U(1)-T^4_4$. We use a multiscale loop vertex expansion. It is an extension of the loop vertex expansion (the basic constructive technique for non-local theories) which is required for theories that invo…
We summarize the main ideas behind TGFT condensate cosmology and sketch the technical steps that bring from the fundamental theory to the effective cosmological dynamics. This framework is presented as an explicit illustration of (and possibly a general template for) the emergence of spacetime from non-spatiotemporal quantum entities in quantum gravity, and the many aspects involved in it.
Renormalization group methods are an essential ingredient in the study of nonperturbative problems of quantum field theory. This paper deal with the symmetry constraints on the renormalization group flow for quartic melonic tensorial group field theories. Using the unitary invariance of the interactions, we provide a set of Ward-Takahashi identities which leads to relations between correlation functions. There are numerous reasons to consider such Ward identities in the functional renormalization group. Their compatibility along the flow provides a non-trivial constraint on the reliability of …
This paper aims at investigating the nonperturbative functional renormalization group for tensorial group field theories with nontrivial kinetic action and closure constraint. We consider the quartic melonic just-renormalizable $[U(1)]^6$ model and show that due to this closure constraint the first order Ward-Takahashi identity takes the trivial form as for the models with propagators proportional to identity. We then construct the new version of the effective vertex expansion applicable to this class of models, which in particular allows to close the hierarchical structure of the flow equatio…
This paper is focused on the functional renormalization group applied to the $T_5^6$ tensor model on the Abelian group $U(1)$ with closure constraint. For the first time, we derive the flow equations for the couplings and mass parameters in a suitable truncation around the marginal interactions with respect to the perturbative power counting. For the second time, we study the behavior around the Gaussian fixed point, and show that the theory is nonasymptotically free. Finally, we discuss the UV completion of the theory. We show the existence of several nontrivial fixed points, study the behavi…

This manuscript aims at giving our new advance on the functional renormalization group applied to tensorial group field theory. It is based on a series of our three papers [arXiv:1803.09902], [arXiv:1809.00247] and [arXiv:1809.06081]. We consider the polynomial Abelian $U(1)^d$ models without closure constraint, especially we discuss the case of quartic melonic interaction. We present a new approach to solve the exact Wetterich flow equation called the effective vertex expansion method, and investigate the resulting flow equations, especially about the existence of non-Gaussian fixed points fo…
We study the cosmological sector of the Lorentzian Barrett-Crane (BC) model coupled to a free massless scalar field in its Group Field Theory (GFT) formulation, corresponding to the mean-field hydrodynamics obtained from coherent condensate states. The relational evolution of the condensate with respect to the scalar field yields effective dynamics of homogeneous and isotropic cosmologies, similar to those previously obtained in $\text{SU}(2)$-based EPRL-like models. Also in this manifestly Lorentzian setting, in which only continuous $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$-representations are used, we obta…
Rank-d Tensorial Group Field Theories are quantum field theories defined on a group manifold $G^{\times d}$, which represent a non-local generalization of standard QFT, and a candidate formalism for quantum gravity, since, when endowed with appropriate data, they can be interpreted as defining a field theoretic description of the fundamental building blocks of quantum spacetime. Their renormalisation analysis is crucial both for establishing their consistency as quantum field theories, and for studying the emergence of continuum spacetime and geometry from them. In this paper, we study the ren…
We introduce a new family of tensorial field theories by coupling different fields in a non-trivial way, with a view towards the investigation of the coupling between matter and gravity in the quantum regime. As a first step, we consider the simple case with two tensors of the same rank coupled together, with Dirac like kinetic kernel. We focus especially on rank-$3$ tensors, which lead to a power counting just-renormalizable model, and interpret Feynman graphs as Ising configurations on random lattices. We investigate the renormalization group flow for this model, using two different and comp…
We set up the Functional Renormalisation Group formalism for Tensorial Group Field Theory in full generality. We then apply it to a rank-3 model over U(1) x U(1) x U(1), endowed with a linear kinetic term and nonlocal interactions. The system of FRG equations turns out to be non-autonomous in the RG flow parameter. This feature is explained by the existence of a hidden scale, the radius of the group manifold. We investigate in detail the opposite regimes of large cut-off (UV) and small cut-off (IR) of the FRG equations, where the system becomes autonomous, and we find, in both case, Gaussian a…
In this paper, we review some general formulations of exact renormalisation group equations and loop equations for tensor models and tensorial group field theories. We illustrate the use of these equations in the derivation of the leading order expectation values of observables in tensor models. Furthermore, we use the exact renormalisation group equations to establish a suitable scaling dimension for interactions in Abelian tensorial group field theories with a closure constraint. We also present analogues of the loop equations for tensor models.
We consider the parametric representation of the amplitudes of Abelian models in the so-called framework of rank $d$ Tensorial Group Field Theory. These models are called Abelian because their fields live on $U(1)^D$. We concentrate on the case when these models are endowed with particular kinetic terms involving a linear power in momenta. New dimensional regularization and renormalization schemes are introduced for particular models in this class: a rank 3 tensor model, an infinite tower of matrix models $ϕ^{2n}$ over $U(1)$, and a matrix model over $U(1)^2$. For all divergent amplitudes, we …
Classes of renormalizable models in the Tensorial Group Field Theory framework are investigated. The rank $d$ tensor fields are defined over $d$ copies of a group manifold $G_D=U(1)^D$ or $G_D= SU(2)^D$ with no symmetry and no gauge invariance assumed on the fields. In particular, we explore the space of renormalizable models endowed with a kinetic term corresponding to a sum of momenta of the form $p^{2a}$, $a\in ]0,1]$. This study is tailored for models equipped with Laplacian dynamics on $G_D$ (case $a=1$) but also for more exotic nonlocal models in quantum topology (case $0<a<1$). A generi…
This paper aims at giving a novel approach to investigate the behavior of the renormalization group flow for tensorial group field theories to all orders of the perturbation theory. From an appropriate choice of the kinetic kernel, we build an infinite family of just-renormalizable models, for tensor fields with arbitrary rank $d$. Investigating the large $ d$ limit, we show that the self-energy melonic amplitude is decomposed as a product of loop-vertex functions, depending only on dimensionless mass. The corresponding melonic amplitudes may be mapped as trees in the so-called Hubbard-Straton…
The problem of decomposition of unitary irreps of (super) tensorial (i.e. extended with tensorial charges) Poincar{é} algebra w.r.t. its different subalgebras is considered. This requires calculation of little groups for different configurations of tensor charges. Particularly, for preon states (i.e. states with maximal supersymmetry) in different dimensions the particle content is calculated, i.e. the spectrum of usual Poincar{é} representations in the preon representation of tensorial Poincar{é}. At d=4 results coincide with (and may provide another point of view on) the Vasiliev's results i…
Perturbing the standard Gross-Neveu model for $N^3$ fermions by quartic interactions with the appropriate tensorial contraction patterns, we reduce the original $U(N^3)$ symmetry to either $U(N)\times U(N^2)$ or $U(N)\times U(N)\times U(N)$. In the large-$N$ limit, we show that in three dimensions such models admit new ultraviolet fixed points with reduced symmetry, besides the well-known one with maximal symmetry. The phase diagram notably presents a new phase with spontaneous symmetry breaking of one $U(N)$ component of the symmetry group.
The tensorial principal component analysis is a generalization of ordinary principal component analysis, focusing on data which are suitably described by tensors rather than matrices. This paper aims at giving the nonperturbative renormalization group formalism based on a slight generalization of the covariance matrix, to investigate signal detection for the difficult issue of nearly continuous spectra. Renormalization group allows constructing effective description keeping only relevant features in the low ``energy'' (i.e. large eigenvalues) limit and thus provides universal descriptions allo…
The Maxwell-covariant particle model is formulated in tensorial extended D=4 space-time (x_mu, z_{mu nu}) parametrized by ten-dimensional coset of D=4 Maxwell group, with added auxiliary Weyl spinors lambda_alpha, y^alpha. We provide the Hamiltonian quantization of the model and demonstrate that first class constraints modify the known equations obtained for massless higher spin fields in flat tensorial space-time. We obtain the Maxwell-covariant field equations for new infinite dimensional spin multiplets. The component fields assigned to different spin values are linked by couplings proporti…
The existence of a topological double-covering for the $GL(n,R)$ and diffeomorphism groups is reviewed. These groups do not have finite-dimensional faithful representations. An explicit construction and the classification of all $\bar{SL}(n,R)$, $n=3,4$ unitary irreducible representations is presented. Infinite-component spinorial and tensorial $\bar{SL}(4,R)$ fields, "manifields", are introduced. Particle content of the ladder manifields, as given by the $\bar{SL}(3,R)$ "little" group is determined. The manifields are lifted to the corresponding world spinorial and tensorial manifields by mak…
Referring to recent works concerning the functional renormalization group for tensorial group fields theories [arXiv:1803.09902] and [arXiv:1809.00247], this paper gives in-depth explanation for, the ambiguity around the search of fixed points in the Wetterich flow equation and the Ward-Takahashi identities. We consider the $U(1)$-tensors models and discuss the non-existence of phase transition taking into account the Ward-identities as new constraint along the flow. We prove that the quartic melonic tensorial group fields theories without closure constraint are devoid with the fixed points an…
We study the functional renormalization group of a three-dimensional tensorial Group Field Theory (GFT) with gauge group SU(2). This model generates (generalized) lattice gauge theory amplitudes, and is known to be perturbatively renormalizable up to order 6 melonic interactions. We consider a series of truncations of the exact Wetterich--Morris equation, which retain increasingly many perturbatively irrelevant melonic interactions. This tensorial analogue of the ordinary local potential approximation allows to investigate the existence of non-perturbative fixed points of the renormalization g…
The little groups (i.e. the subgroups of Lorentz group, leaving invariant given configurations of tensorial charges) of unitary irreps of superstring/M-theory superalgebras are considered. It is noted, that in the case of $(n-1)/n$ (maximal supersymmetric) BPS configuration in any dimensions the non-zero supercharge is neutral w.r.t. the algebra of little group, which means that all members of supermultiplet are in the same representation of that algebra and hence of (generalized with tensorial charges) Poincare algebra. This situation is similar to two-dimensional case and shows that usual sp…
We consider the master fields for HS multiplets defined on 10-dimensional tensorial extension \tilde{\cal M} of D=4 space-time described as a coset \tilde{\cal M}={\cal M}/Sl(2;C) of 16-parameter Maxwell group {\cal M}. The tensorial coordinates provide a geometrization of the coupling to constant uniform EM fields. We describe the spinorial model in extended space-time \tilde{\cal M} and by its first quantization we obtain new infinite HS-Maxwell multiplets with their massless components coupled to each other through constant EM background. We conclude our report by observing that three-dimen…
In the group field theory approach to quantum gravity, continuous spacetime geometry is expected to emerge via phase transition. However, understanding the phase diagram and finding fixed points under the renormalization group flow remains a major challenge. In this work we tackle the issue for a tensorial group field theory using the functional renormalization group method. We derive the flow equation for the effective potential at any order restricting to a subclass of tensorial interactions called cyclic melonic and projecting to a constant field in group space. For a tensor field of rank $…
The representation theory underlying the infinite-component relativistic wave equation written by Majorana is revisited from a modern perspective. On the one hand, the massless solutions of this equation are shown to form a supermultiplet of the superPoincare algebra with tensorial central charges; it can also be obtained as the infinite spin limit of massive solutions. On the other hand, the Majorana equation is generalized for any space-time dimension and for arbitrary Regge trajectories. Inspired from these results, an infinite supermultiplet of massive fields of all spins and of equal mass…
In rainbow tensor models, which generalize rectangular complex matrix model (RCM) and possess a huge gauge symmetry $U(N_1)\times\ldots\times U(N_r)$, we introduce a new sub-basis in the linear space of gauge invariant operators, which is a redundant basis in the space of operators with non-zero Gaussian averages. Its elements are labeled by $r$-tuples of Young diagrams of a given size equal to the power of tensor field. Their tensor model averages are just products of dimensions: $\Big<χ_{R_1,\ldots,R_r}\Big> \sim C_{R_1,\ldots, R_r}D_{R_1}(N_1)\ldots D_{R_r}(N_r)$ of representations $R_i$ of…
We use a reformulation of topological group field theories in 3 and 4 dimensions in terms of variables associated to vertices, in 3d, and edges, in 4d, to obtain new scaling bounds for their Feynman amplitudes. In both 3 and 4 dimensions, we obtain a bubble bound proving the suppression of singular topologies with respect to the first terms in the perturbative expansion (in the cut-off). We also prove a new, stronger jacket bound than the one currently available in the literature. We expect these results to be relevant for other tensorial field theories of this type, as well as for group field…
We present a brief summary of the recent discovery of direct tensorial analogue of characters. We distinguish three degrees of generalization: (1) $c$-number Kronecker characters made with the help of symmetric group characters and inheriting most of the nice properties of conventional Schur functions, except for forming a complete basis for the case of rank $r>2$ tensors: they are orthogonal, are eigenfunctions of appropriate cut-and-join operators and form a complete basis for the operators with non-zero Gaussian averages; (2) genuine matrix-valued tensorial quantities, forming an over-compl…
We study a just renormalizable tensorial group field theory of rank six with quartic melonic interactions and Abelian group U(1). We introduce the formalism of the intermediate field, which allows a precise characterization of the leading order Feynman graphs. We define the renormalization of the model, compute its (perturbative) renormalization group flow and write its expansion in terms of effective couplings. We then establish closed equations for the two point and four point functions at leading (melonic) order. Using the effective expansion and its uniform exponential bounds we prove that…
Building on an analogy with ordinary scalar field theories, an epsilon expansion for rank-3 tensorial group field theories with gauge invariance condition is introduced. This allows to continuously interpolate between the dimension four group SU(2) X U(1) and the dimension three SU(2). In the first situation, there is a unique marginal 4-valent coupling constant, but in contrast to ordinary scalar field theory this model is asymptotically free. In the SU(2) case, the presence of two marginally relevant 6-valent coupling constants and one 4-valent super-renormalizable interaction spoils this in…
World spinors are objects that transform w.r.t. double covering group $\bar{Diff}(4,R)$ of the Group of General Coordinate Transformations. The basic mathematical results and the corresponding physical interpretation concerning these, infinite-dimensional, spinorial representations are reviewed. The role of groups $Diff(4,R)$, $GA(4,R)$, $GL(4,R)$, $SL(4,R)$, $SO(3,1)$ and the corresponding covering groups is pointed out. New results on the infinite dimensionality of spinorial representations, explicit construction of the $\bar{SL}(4,R)$ representations in the basis of finite-dimensional non-u…
DifferentialGeometry is a Maple software package which symbolically performs fundamental operations of calculus on manifolds, differential geometry, tensor calculus, Lie algebras, Lie groups, transformation groups, jet spaces, and the variational calculus. These capabilities, combined with dramatic recent improvements in symbolic approaches to solving algebraic and differential equations, have allowed for development of powerful new tools for solving research problems in gravitation and field theory. The purpose of this paper is to describe some of these new tools and present some advanced app…
We investigate the critical properties of the phase transition towards complex tensor order that has been proposed to occur in spin-orbit coupled superconductors. For this purpose we formulate the bosonic field theory for fluctuations of the complex irreducible second-rank tensor order parameter close to the transition. We then determine the scale dependence of the couplings of the theory by means of the perturbative Renormalization Group (RG). For the isotropic system we generically detect a fluctuation-induced first-order phase transition. The initial values for the running couplings are det…
In the tensorial group field theory (TGFT) approach to quantum gravity, the basic quanta of the theory correspond to discrete building blocks of geometry. It is expected that their collective dynamics gives rise to continuum spacetime at a coarse grained level, via a process involving a phase transition. In this work we show for the first time how phase transitions for realistic TGFT models can be realized using Landau-Ginzburg mean-field theory. More precisely, we consider models generating 4-dimensional Lorentzian triangulations formed by spacelike tetrahedra whose quantum geometry is encode…
It is widely believed that the screening mechanism is an essential feature for the modified gravity theory. Although this mechanism has been examined thoroughly in the past decade, their analyses are based on the classical configuration of the matter fields. In this paper, we demonstrate a new formulation of the chameleon mechanism in $F(R)$ gravity theory, to shed light on quantum-field theoretical effects on the chameleon mechanism as well as the related scalaron physics, induced by the matter sector. We show a potential absence of the chameleon mechanism in the cosmic history based on a sca…
We study the polynomial Abelian or U(1)^d Tensorial Group Field Theories equipped with a gauge invariance condition in any dimension d. From our analysis, we prove the just renormalizability at all orders of perturbation of the phi^4_6 and phi^6_5 random tensor models. We also deduce that the phi^4_5 tensor model is super-renormalizable.
