This article provides a Wilsonian description of the perturbatively renormalizable Tensorial Group Field Theory introduced in arXiv:1303.6772 [hep-th] (Commun. Math. Phys. 330, 581-637). It is a rank-3 model based on the gauge group SU(2), and as such is expected to be related to Euclidean quantum gravity in three dimensions. By means of a power-counting argument, we introduce a notion of dimensionality of the free parameters defining the action. General flow equations for the dimensionless bare coupling constants can then be derived, in terms of a discretely varying cut-off, and in which all the so-called melonic Feynman diagrams contribute. Linearizing around the Gaussian fixed point allows to recover the splitting between relevant, irrelevant, and marginal coupling constants. Pushing the perturbative expansion to second order for the marginal parameters, we are able to determine their behaviour in the vicinity of the Gaussian fixed point. Along the way, several technical tools are reviewed, including a discussion of combinatorial factors and of the Laplace approximation, which reduces the evaluation of the amplitudes in the UV limit to that of Gaussian integrals.
We address in this paper the issue of renormalizability for SU(2) Tensorial Group Field Theories (TGFT) with geometric Boulatov-type conditions in three dimensions. We prove that tensorial interactions up to degree 6 are just renormalizable without any anomaly. Our new models define the renormalizable TGFT version of the Boulatov model and provide therefore a new approach to quantum gravity in three dimensions. Among the many new technical results established in this paper are a general classification of just renormalizable models with gauge invariance condition, and in particular concerning p…
We develop the functional renormalization group formalism for a tensorial group field theory with closure constraint, in the case of an Abelian just renormalizable model with quartic interactions. The method allows us to obtain a closed but non-autonomous system of differential equations which describe the renormalization group flow of the couplings beyond perturbation theory. The explicit dependence of the beta functions on the running scale is due to the existence of an external scale in the model, the radius of the unit circle. We study the occurrence of fixed points and their critical prop…
We tackle the issue of renormalizability for Tensorial Group Field Theories (TGFT) including gauge invariance conditions, with the rigorous tool of multi-scale analysis, to prepare the ground for applications to quantum gravity models. In the process, we define the appropriate generalization of some key QFT notions, including: connectedness, locality and contraction of (high) subgraphs. We also define a new notion of Wick ordering, corresponding to the subtraction of (maximal) melonic tadpoles. We then consider the simplest examples of dynamical 4-dimensional TGFT with gauge invariance conditi…
In this paper we consider the complete momentum-independent quartic order truncation for the effective average action of a real Abelian rank 3 tensorial group field theory. This complete truncation includes non-melonic as well as double-trace interactions. In the usual functional renormalization group perspective, the inclusion of more operators that belong to the underlying theory space corresponds to an improvement of the truncation of the effective average action. We show that the inclusion of non-melonic and double-trace operators in the truncation brings subtleties. In particular, we disc…
In this thesis, we study the structure of Group Field Theories (GFTs) from the point of view of renormalization theory. Such quantum field theories are found in approaches to quantum gravity related to Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) on the one hand, and to matrix models and tensor models on the other hand. They model quantum space-time, in the sense that their Feynman amplitudes label triangulations, which can be understood as transition amplitudes between LQG spin network states. The question of renormalizability is crucial if one wants to establish interesting GFTs as well-defined (perturbative)…
We study the renormalization of a general field theory on the 2-sphere with tensorial interaction and gauge invariance under the diagonal action of SU(2). We derive the power counting for arbitrary dimension d. For the case d=4, we prove perturbative renormalizability to all orders via multi-scale analysis, study both the renormalised and effective perturbation series, and establish the asymptotic freedom of the model. We also outline a general power counting for the homogeneous space SO(D)/SO(D-1), of direct interest for quantum gravity models in general dimensions, and point out the obstruct…
The nontrivial fixed point discovered for $ϕ^4$-marginal couplings in tensorial group field theories have been showed to be incompatible with Ward-Takahashi identities. In this previous analysis we have stated that the case of models with interactions of order greater than four could probably lead to a fixed point compatible with local Ward's identities. In this paper we focus on a rank-4 Abelian $ϕ^6$-just renormalizable tensorial group field theory and describe the renormalization group flow over the sub-theory space where Ward constraint is satisfied along the flow, by using an improved ver…
Renormalization group methods are an essential ingredient in the study of nonperturbative problems of quantum field theory. This paper deal with the symmetry constraints on the renormalization group flow for quartic melonic tensorial group field theories. Using the unitary invariance of the interactions, we provide a set of Ward-Takahashi identities which leads to relations between correlation functions. There are numerous reasons to consider such Ward identities in the functional renormalization group. Their compatibility along the flow provides a non-trivial constraint on the reliability of …
This paper is focused on the functional renormalization group applied to the $T_5^6$ tensor model on the Abelian group $U(1)$ with closure constraint. For the first time, we derive the flow equations for the couplings and mass parameters in a suitable truncation around the marginal interactions with respect to the perturbative power counting. For the second time, we study the behavior around the Gaussian fixed point, and show that the theory is nonasymptotically free. Finally, we discuss the UV completion of the theory. We show the existence of several nontrivial fixed points, study the behavi…
We introduce a new family of tensorial field theories by coupling different fields in a non-trivial way, with a view towards the investigation of the coupling between matter and gravity in the quantum regime. As a first step, we consider the simple case with two tensors of the same rank coupled together, with Dirac like kinetic kernel. We focus especially on rank-$3$ tensors, which lead to a power counting just-renormalizable model, and interpret Feynman graphs as Ising configurations on random lattices. We investigate the renormalization group flow for this model, using two different and comp…
This manuscript aims at giving our new advance on the functional renormalization group applied to tensorial group field theory. It is based on a series of our three papers [arXiv:1803.09902], [arXiv:1809.00247] and [arXiv:1809.06081]. We consider the polynomial Abelian $U(1)^d$ models without closure constraint, especially we discuss the case of quartic melonic interaction. We present a new approach to solve the exact Wetterich flow equation called the effective vertex expansion method, and investigate the resulting flow equations, especially about the existence of non-Gaussian fixed points fo…
The Loop Vertex Expansion (LVE) is a constructive technique using canonical combinatorial tools. It works well for quantum field theories without renormalization, which is the case of the field theory studied in this paper. Tensorial Group Field Theories (TGFT) are a new class of field theories proposed to quantize gravity. This paper is devoted to a very simple TGFT for rank three tensors with U(1)group and quartic interactions, hence nicknamed $U(1)$-$T^4_3$. It has no ultraviolet divergence, and we show, with the LVE, that it is Borel summable in its coupling constant.
The tensorial principal component analysis is a generalization of ordinary principal component analysis, focusing on data which are suitably described by tensors rather than matrices. This paper aims at giving the nonperturbative renormalization group formalism based on a slight generalization of the covariance matrix, to investigate signal detection for the difficult issue of nearly continuous spectra. Renormalization group allows constructing effective description keeping only relevant features in the low ``energy'' (i.e. large eigenvalues) limit and thus provides universal descriptions allo…
In the group field theory approach to quantum gravity, continuous spacetime geometry is expected to emerge via phase transition. However, understanding the phase diagram and finding fixed points under the renormalization group flow remains a major challenge. In this work we tackle the issue for a tensorial group field theory using the functional renormalization group method. We derive the flow equation for the effective potential at any order restricting to a subclass of tensorial interactions called cyclic melonic and projecting to a constant field in group space. For a tensor field of rank $…
In this paper we continue our program of non-pertubative constructions of tensorial group field theories (TGFT). We prove analyticity and Borel summability in a suitable domain of the coupling constant of the simplest super-renormalizable TGFT which contains some ultraviolet divergencies, namely the color-symmetric quartic melonic rank-four model with Abelian $U(1)$ gauge invariance, nicknamed $U(1)-T^4_4$. We use a multiscale loop vertex expansion. It is an extension of the loop vertex expansion (the basic constructive technique for non-local theories) which is required for theories that invo…
Continuum spacetime is expected to emerge via phase transition in discrete approaches to quantum gravity. A promising example is tensorial group field theory but its phase diagram remains an open issue. The results of recent attempts in terms of the functional renormalization group method remain inconclusive since they are restricted to truncations of low order. We overcome this barrier with a local-potential approximation for $\textrm{U}(1)$ tensor fields at arbitrary rank $r$ focusing on a specific class of so-called cyclic-melonic interactions. Projecting onto constant field configurations,…
We point out that if quantum field renormalization is taken into account the predictions of slow-roll inflation for both the scalar and tensorial power spectra change significantly for wavelengths that today are at observable scales
We show that standard identities and theorems for lattice models with $U(1)$ symmetry get re-expressed discretely in the tensorial formulation of these models. We explain the geometrical analogy between the continuous lattice equations of motion and the discrete selection rules of the tensors. We construct a gauge-invariant transfer matrix in arbitrary dimensions. We show the equivalence with its gauge-fixed version in a maximal temporal gauge and explain how a discrete Gauss's law is always enforced. We propose a noise-robust way to implement Gauss's law in arbitrary dimensions. We reformulat…
In the tensorial group field theory approach to quantum gravity, the theory is based on discrete building blocks and continuum spacetime is expected to emerge from their collective dynamics, possibly at criticality, via a phase transition. On a compact group of fixed volume this can be expected to be only possible in a large-volume or thermodynamic limit. Here we show how phase transitions are possible in TGFTs in two cases: a) considering the non-local group degrees of freedom on a non-compact Lie group instead of a compact one (or taking a large-volume limit of a compact group); b) in models…
This paper aims at investigating the nonperturbative functional renormalization group for tensorial group field theories with nontrivial kinetic action and closure constraint. We consider the quartic melonic just-renormalizable $[U(1)]^6$ model and show that due to this closure constraint the first order Ward-Takahashi identity takes the trivial form as for the models with propagators proportional to identity. We then construct the new version of the effective vertex expansion applicable to this class of models, which in particular allows to close the hierarchical structure of the flow equatio…
We study the functional renormalization group of a three-dimensional tensorial Group Field Theory (GFT) with gauge group SU(2). This model generates (generalized) lattice gauge theory amplitudes, and is known to be perturbatively renormalizable up to order 6 melonic interactions. We consider a series of truncations of the exact Wetterich--Morris equation, which retain increasingly many perturbatively irrelevant melonic interactions. This tensorial analogue of the ordinary local potential approximation allows to investigate the existence of non-perturbative fixed points of the renormalization g…
In recent years, some interesting investigations of the non-perturbative renormalization group equations for tensorial group field theories have been done in the truncation method, and completely discarding the Ward identities from their analysis. In this letter, in continuation of our recent series of papers, we present a new framework of investigation, namely the effective vertex expansion, allowing to consider infinite sectors rather than finite dimensional subspaces of the full theory space. We focus on the ultraviolet behavior, and provide a new and complete description of the renormaliza…
We study a just renormalizable tensorial group field theory of rank six with quartic melonic interactions and Abelian group U(1). We introduce the formalism of the intermediate field, which allows a precise characterization of the leading order Feynman graphs. We define the renormalization of the model, compute its (perturbative) renormalization group flow and write its expansion in terms of effective couplings. We then establish closed equations for the two point and four point functions at leading (melonic) order. Using the effective expansion and its uniform exponential bounds we prove that…
Various combinatorially non-local field theories are known to be renormalizable. Still, explicit calculations of amplitudes are very rare and restricted to matrix field theory. In this contribution I want to demonstrate how the BPHZ momentum scheme in terms of the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra applies to any combinatorially non-local field theory which is renormalizable. This algebraic method improves the understanding of known results in noncommutative field theory in its matrix formulation. Furthermore, I use it to provide new explicit perturbative calculations of amplitudes in tensorial field…
We consider the parametric representation of the amplitudes of Abelian models in the so-called framework of rank $d$ Tensorial Group Field Theory. These models are called Abelian because their fields live on $U(1)^D$. We concentrate on the case when these models are endowed with particular kinetic terms involving a linear power in momenta. New dimensional regularization and renormalization schemes are introduced for particular models in this class: a rank 3 tensor model, an infinite tower of matrix models $ϕ^{2n}$ over $U(1)$, and a matrix model over $U(1)^2$. For all divergent amplitudes, we …
Referring to recent works concerning the functional renormalization group for tensorial group fields theories [arXiv:1803.09902] and [arXiv:1809.00247], this paper gives in-depth explanation for, the ambiguity around the search of fixed points in the Wetterich flow equation and the Ward-Takahashi identities. We consider the $U(1)$-tensors models and discuss the non-existence of phase transition taking into account the Ward-identities as new constraint along the flow. We prove that the quartic melonic tensorial group fields theories without closure constraint are devoid with the fixed points an…
Super-exponential warp factors have been proposed in the context of two-brane models to solve the gauge hierarchy problem of scales by using a compactification scale of the same order of the fundamental Planck scale, completely eliminating the hierarchy between the electroweak and the Planck scales. However, most of the so far studied families of braneworlds with super-exponential warp factors do not localize 4D gravity when one of the branes is sent to infinity. Recently a braneworld model generated by a canonical scalar field $ϕ$ minimally coupled to 5D gravity with a bulk cosmological const…
This paper aims at giving a novel approach to investigate the behavior of the renormalization group flow for tensorial group field theories to all orders of the perturbation theory. From an appropriate choice of the kinetic kernel, we build an infinite family of just-renormalizable models, for tensor fields with arbitrary rank $d$. Investigating the large $ d$ limit, we show that the self-energy melonic amplitude is decomposed as a product of loop-vertex functions, depending only on dimensionless mass. The corresponding melonic amplitudes may be mapped as trees in the so-called Hubbard-Straton…
Tensor models provide a way to access the path-integral for discretized quantum gravity in d dimensions. As in the case of matrix models for two-dimensional quantum gravity, the continuum limit can be related to a Renormalization Group fixed point in a setup where the tensor size N serves as the Renormalization Group scale. We develop functional Renormalization Group tools for tensor models with a main focus on a rank-3 model for three-dimensional quantum gravity. We rediscover the double-scaling limit and provide an estimate for the scaling exponent. Moreover, we identify two additional fixed…
The Ben Geloun-Rivasseau quantum field theoretical model is the first tensor model shown to be perturbatively renormalizable. We define here an appropriate Hopf algebra describing the combinatorics of this new tensorial renormalization. The structure we propose is significantly different from the previously defined Connes-Kreimer combinatorial Hopf algebras due to the involved combinatorial and topological properties of the tensorial Feynman graphs. In particular, the 2- and 4-point function insertions must be defined to be non-trivial only if the superficial divergence degree of the associate…
This paper, in addition to our recent works, intends to explore the behavior of the Wetterich flow equations in the portion of the theory space spanned by non-branching melons constrained with Ward-identities. We focus on a rank-5 just-renormalizable tensorial group field theory and consider a non-trivial extension of the local potential approximation namely effective vertex expansion for just-renormalizable quartic melonic interactions, disregarding effects coming from disconnected interactions. Investigating the dynamically constrained flow, we show explicitly that results weakly rely on the…
We establish the functional Renormalization Group as an exploratory tool to investigate a possible phase transition between a pre-geometric discrete phase and a geometric continuum phase in quantum gravity. In this paper, based on the analysis of [1], we study three new aspects of the double-scaling limit of matrix models as Renormalization Group fixed points: Firstly, we investigate multicritical fixed points, which are associated with quantum gravity coupled to conformal matter. Secondly, we discuss an approximation that reduces the scheme dependence of our results as well as computational e…
At criticality, discrete quantum-gravity models are expected to give rise to continuum spacetime. Recent progress has established the functional renormalization group method in the context of such models as a practical tool to study their critical properties and to chart their phase diagrams. Here, we apply these techniques to the multi-matrix model with $ABAB$-interaction potentially relevant for Lorentzian quantum gravity in 3 dimensions. We characterize the fixed-point structure and phase diagram of this model, paving the way for functional RG studies of more general multi-matrix or tensor …

Conventional renormalization methods in statistical physics and lattice quantum field theory assume a flat metric background. We outline here a generalization of such methods to models on discretized spaces without metric background. Cellular decompositions play the role of discretizations. The group of scale transformations is replaced by the groupoid of changes of cellular decompositions. We introduce cellular moves which generate this groupoid and allow to define a renormalization groupoid flow. We proceed to test our approach on several models. Quantum BF theory is the simplest example as …
The renormalization group (RG) method is extended for global asymptotic analysis of discrete systems. We show that the RG equation in the discretized form leads to difference equations corresponding to the Stuart-Landau or Ginzburg-Landau equations. We propose a discretization scheme which leads to a faithful discretization of the reduced dynamics of the original differential equations.
We discuss the successes and limitations of statistical sampling for a sequence of models studied in the context of lattice QCD and emphasize the need for new methods to deal with finite-density and real-time evolution. We show that these lattice models can be reformulated using tensorial methods where the field integrations in the path-integral formalism are replaced by discrete sums. These formulations involve various types of duality and provide exact coarse-graining formulas which can be combined with truncations to obtain practical implementations of the Wilson renormalization group progr…
We consider a massive scalar field living on the recently found exact quantum space-time corresponding to vacuum spherically symmetric loop quantum gravity. The discreteness of the quantum space time naturally regularizes the scalar field, eliminating divergences. However, the resulting finite theory depends on the details of the micro physics. We argue that such dependence can be eliminated through a finite renormalization and discuss its nature. This is an example of how quantum field theories on quantum space times deal with the issues of divergences in quantum field theories.

We extend the Hertz-Millis theory of quantum phase transitions in itinerant electron systems to phases with broken discrete symmetry. Using a set of coupled flow equations derived within the functional renormalization group framework, we compute the second order phase transition line T_c(delta), with delta a non-thermal control parameter, near a quantum critical point. We analyze the interplay and relative importance of quantum and classical fluctuations at different energy scales, and we compare the Ginzburg temperature T_G to the transition temperature T_c, the latter being associated with a…

Ward-Takahashi identities are nonperturbative relations between correlation functions and arising from symmetries in quantum and statistical fields theories, as Noether currents conservation for classical theories. Since their historical origin, these identities were considered to prove the exact relation between counter-terms to all order of the perturbative expansion. Recently they have been considered in relation with nonperturbative renormalization group aspects for some classes of quantum field theories namely tensorial group field theories and matrix models, both characterized by a speci…
Spin foams provide path integrals for quantum gravity, which employ discretizations as regulator. To obtain regulator independent predictions, we must remove these fiducial structures in a suitable refinement limit. In this chapter we present the current state of research: We begin with a discussion on the role of diffeomorphism symmetries in discrete systems, the notion of scale in background independent theories and how we can consistently improve theories via renormalization to reduce regulator dependence. We present the consistent boundary formulation, which provides a renormalization fram…
We construct a gravity dual for scale invariant but non-conformal field theories with a cyclic renormalization group flow. A slight modification of our construction gives a gravity dual of discretely scale invariant field theories. The underlying gravitational theory breaks the null energy condition.
Renormalization group limit cycles may be a commonplace for quantum Hamiltonians requiring renormalization, in contrast to experience to date with classical models of critical points, where fixed points are far more common. We discuss the simplest model Hamiltonian identified to date that exhibits a renormalization group limit cycle. The model is a discrete Hamiltonian with two coupling constants and a non-perturbative renormalization group that involves changes in only one of these couplings and is soluble analytically. The Hamiltonian is the discrete analog to a continuum Hamiltonian previou…
We discuss the discrete symmetries of the Stueckelberg-Schrodinger relativistic quantum theory and its associated 5D local gauge theory, a dynamical description of particle/antiparticle interactions, with monotonically increasing Poincare-invariant parameter. In this framework, worldlines are traced out through the parameterized evolution of spacetime events, advancing or retreating with respect to the laboratory clock, with negative energy trajectories appearing as antiparticles when the observer describes the evolution using the laboratory clock. The associated gauge theory describes local i…
A tensorial representation of $ϕ^4$ field theory introduced in Phys. Rev. D. 93, 085005 (2016) is studied close to six dimensions, with an eye towards a possible realization of an interacting conformal field theory in five dimensions. We employ the two-loop $ε$-expansion, two-loop fixed-dimension renormalization group, and non-perturbative functional renormalization group. An interacting, real, infrared-stable fixed point is found near six dimensions, and the corresponding anomalous dimensions are computed to the second order in small parameter $ε=6-d$. Two-loop epsilon-expansion indicates, ho…
In the first part, we concentrate on CFTs in coordinate space. We lay the foundations of Conformal Field Theory and we also demonstrate a method where by using the embedding formalism we can derive up to n-point scalar conformal correlators. We proceed with our analysis in momentum space and we illustrate the theory of the conformal anomalies. We move on to analyse the renormalization of the correlators through counterterms followed by a discussion of the anomaly action. In the second part of the thesis. we derive and analyze the conformal Ward identities (CWIs) of a tensorial 4-point function…
Discrete wavelet-based methods promise to emerge as an excellent framework for the non-perturbative analysis of quantum field theories. In this work, we investigate aspects of renormalization in theories analyzed using wavelet-based methods. We demonstrate the non-perturbative approach of regularization, renormalization, and the emergence of flowing coupling constant within the context of these methods. This is tested on a model of the particle in an attractive Dirac delta function potential in two spatial dimensions, which is known to demonstrate quintessential features found in a typical rel…
A model for quantum gravity in one (time) dimension is discussed, based on Regge's discrete formulation of gravity. The nature of exact continuous lattice diffeomorphisms and the implications for a regularized gravitational measure are examined. After introducing a massless scalar field coupled to the edge lengths, the scalar functional integral is performed exactly on a finite lattice, and the ensuing change in the measure is determined. It is found that the renormalization of the cosmological constant due to the scalar field fluctuations vanishes identically in one dimension. A simple decima…
This work presents some results about Wick polynomials of a vector field renormalization in locally covariant algebraic quantum field theory in curved spacetime. General vector fields are pictured as sections of natural vector bundles over globally hyperbolic spacetimes and quantized through the known functorial machinery in terms of local $^*$-algebras. These quantized fields may be defined on spacetimes with given classical background fields, also sections of natural vector bundles, in addition to the Lorentzian metric. The mass and the coupling constants are in particular viewed as backgrou…
We study the conditions under which a symmetry is spontaneously broken in the Wilson renormalization group formulation. Both for a global and local symmetry, the result is that in perturbation theory one has to perform a fine tuning of the boundary conditions for the flow of the relevant couplings. We consider in detail the discrete $Z_2$ case and the Abelian Higgs model.
The Renormalization Group flow equations obtained by means of a proper time regulator are used to analyze the restoration of the discrete chiral symmetry at non-zero density and temperature in the Gross-Neveu model in d=2+1 dimensions. The effects of the wave function renormalization of the auxiliary scalar field on the transition have been studied. The analysis is performed for a number of fermion flavors N_f=12 and the limit of large N_f is also considered. The results are compared with those coming from lattice simulations.
