The asymptotic dimension of metric spaces is an important notion in geometric group theory introduced by Gromov. The metric spaces considered in this paper are the ones whose underlying spaces are the vertex-sets of graphs and whose metrics are the distance functions in graphs. A standard compactness argument shows that it suffices to consider the asymptotic dimension of classes of finite graphs.
In this paper we prove that the asymptotic dimension of any proper minor-closed family, any class of graphs of bounded tree-width, and any class of graphs of bounded layered tree-width are at most 2, 1, and 2, respectively. The first result solves a question of Fujiwara and Papasoglu; the second and third results solve a number of questions of Bonamy, Bousquet, Esperet, Groenland, Pirot and Scott. These bounds for asymptotic dimension are optimal and improve a number of results in the literature. Our proofs can be transformed into linear or quadratic time algorithms for finding coverings witnessing the asymptotic dimension which is equivalent to finding weak diameter colorings for graphs. The key ingredient of our proof is a unified machinery about the asymptotic dimension of classes of graphs that have tree-decompositions of bounded adhesion over hereditary classes with known asymptotic dimension, which might be of independent interest.
Given a minor-closed class of graphs $\mathcal{G}$, what is the infimum of the non-trivial roots of the chromatic polynomial of $G \in \mathcal{G}$? When $\mathcal{G}$ is the class of all graphs, the answer is known to be $32/27$. We answer this question exactly for three minor-closed classes of graphs. Furthermore, we conjecture precisely when the value is larger than $32/27$.
We prove that a minor-closed class of graphs has bounded layered pathwidth if and only if some apex-forest is not in the class. This generalises a theorem of Robertson and Seymour, which says that a minor-closed class of graphs has bounded pathwidth if and only if some forest is not in the class.
Motivated by a conjecture of Gyárfás, recently Böttcher, Hladký, Piguet, and Taraz showed that every collection $T_1,\dots,T_t$ of trees on $n$ vertices with $\sum_{i=1}^te(T_i)\leq \binom{n}{2}$ and with bounded maximum degree, can be packed into the complete graph on $(1+o(1))n$ vertices. We generalise this result where we relax the restriction of packing families of trees to families of graphs of any given non-trivial minor-closed class of graphs.
It is known that any planar graph with diameter D has treewidth O(D), and this fact has been used as the basis for several planar graph algorithms. We investigate the extent to which similar relations hold in other graph families. We show that treewidth is bounded by a function of the diameter in a minor-closed family, if and only if some apex graph does not belong to the family. In particular, the O(D) bound above can be extended to bounded-genus graphs. As a consequence, we extend several approximation algorithms and exact subgraph isomorphism algorithms from planar graphs to other graph fam…
We prove that for every proper minor-closed class $M$ of matroids representable over a prime field, there exists a constant-competitive matroid secretary algorithm for the matroids in $M$. This result relies on the extremely powerful matroid minor structure theory being developed by Geelen, Gerards and Whittle. We also note that for asymptotically almost all matroids, the matroid secretary algorithm that selects a random basis, ignoring weights, is $(2+o(1))$-competitive. In fact, assuming the conjecture that almost all matroids are paving, there is a $(1+o(1))$-competitive algorithm for almos…
Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices and maximum degree $d$. Fix some minor-closed property $\mathcal{P}$ (such as planarity). We say that $G$ is $\varepsilon$-far from $\mathcal{P}$ if one has to remove $\varepsilon dn$ edges to make it have $\mathcal{P}$. The problem of property testing $\mathcal{P}$ was introduced in the seminal work of Benjamini-Schramm-Shapira (STOC 2008) that gave a tester with query complexity triply exponential in $\varepsilon^{-1}$. Levi-Ron (TALG 2015) have given the best tester to date, with a quasipolynomial (in $\varepsilon^{-1}$) query complexity. It is an open p…
Robin Thomas asked whether for every proper minor-closed class C, there exists a polynomial-time algorithm approximating the chromatic number of graphs from C up to a constant additive error independent on the class C. We show this is not the case: unless P=NP, for every integer k>=1, there is no polynomial-time algorithm to color a K_{4k+1}-minor-free graph G using at most chi(G)+k-1 colors. More generally, for every k>=1 and 1<=β<=4/3, there is no polynomial-time algorithm to color a K_{4k+1}-minor-free graph G using less than beta.chi(G)+(4-3beta)k colors. As far as we know, this is the fir…

We define the limiting density of a minor-closed family of simple graphs F to be the smallest number k such that every n-vertex graph in F has at most kn(1+o(1)) edges, and we investigate the set of numbers that can be limiting densities. This set of numbers is countable, well-ordered, and closed; its order type is at least ω^ω. It is the closure of the set of densities of density-minimal graphs, graphs for which no minor has a greater ratio of edges to vertices. By analyzing density-minimal graphs of low densities, we find all limiting densities up to the first two cluster points of the set o…
A minor-closed class of graphs is a set of labelled graphs which is closed under isomorphism and under taking minors. For a minor-closed class $C$, we let $c_n$ be the number of graphs in $C$ which have $n$ vertices. A recent result of Norine et al. shows that for all minor-closed class $C$, there is a constant $r$ such that $c_n < r^n n!$. Our main results show that the growth rate of $c_n$ is far from arbitrary. For example, no minor-closed class $C$ has $c_n= r^{n+o(n)} n!$ with $0 < r < 1$ or $1 < r < ξ\approx 1.76$.
In this paper we show that every graph of pathwidth less than $k$ that has a path of order $n$ also has an induced path of order at least $\frac{1}{3} n^{1/k}$. This is an exponential improvement and a generalization of the polylogarithmic bounds obtained by Esperet, Lemoine and Maffray (2016) for interval graphs of bounded clique number. We complement this result with an upper-bound. This result is then used to prove the two following generalizations: - every graph of treewidth less than $k$ that has a path of order $n$ contains an induced path of order at least $\frac{1}{4} (\log n)^{1/k}$; …
Free-minor closed classes [2] and free-planar graphs [3] are considered. Versions of Kuratowski-like theorem for free-planar graphs and Kuratowski theorem for planar graphs are considered.
For $p\in \mathbb{N}$, a coloring $λ$ of the vertices of a graph $G$ is {\em{$p$-centered}} if for every connected subgraph~$H$ of $G$, either $H$ receives more than $p$ colors under $λ$ or there is a color that appears exactly once in $H$. In this paper, we prove that every $K_t$-minor-free graph admits a $p$-centered coloring with $\mathcal{O}(p^{g(t)})$ colors for some function $g$. In the special case that the graph is embeddable in a fixed surface $Σ$ we show that it admits a $p$-centered coloring with $\mathcal{O}(p^{19})$ colors, with the degree of the polynomial independent of the genu…
For any minor-closed class of matroids over a fixed finite field, we state an exact structural characterization for the sufficiently connected matroids in the class. We also state a number of conjectures that might be approachable using the structural characterization.
For a graph class $\mathcal{F}$, let $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n)$ denote the maximum number of edges in a graph in $\mathcal{F}$ on $n$ vertices. We show that for every proper minor-closed graph class $\mathcal{F}$ the function $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n) - Δn$ is eventually periodic, where $Δ= \lim_{n \to \infty} ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n)/n$ is the limiting density of $\mathcal{F}$. This confirms a special case of a conjecture by Geelen, Gerards and Whittle. In particular, the limiting density of every proper minor-closed graph class is rational, which answers a question of Eppstein. As a major step in the proof…
Sturmfels-Sullivant conjectured that the cut polytope of a graph is normal if and only if the graph has no K_5 minor. In the present paper, it is proved that the normality of cut polytopes of graphs is a minor closed property. By using this result, we have large classes of normal cut polytopes. Moreover, it turns out that, in order to study the conjecture, it is enough to consider 4-connected plane triangulations.
Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a minor-closed graph class. We say that a graph $G$ is a $k$-apex of $\mathcal{G}$ if $G$ contains a set $S$ of at most $k$ vertices such that $G\setminus S$ belongs to $\mathcal{G}.$ We denote by $\mathcal{A}_k (\mathcal{G})$ the set of all graphs that are $k$-apices of $\mathcal{G}.$ We prove that every graph in the obstruction set of $\mathcal{A}_k (\mathcal{G}),$ i.e., the minor-minimal set of graphs not belonging to $\mathcal{A}_k (\mathcal{G}),$ has size at most $2^{2^{2^{2^{\mathsf{poly}(k)}}}},$ where $\mathsf{poly}$ is a polynomial function whose degree depends on…
Dujmović et al. [\emph{J.~ACM}~'20] recently proved that every planar graph is isomorphic to a subgraph of the strong product of a bounded treewidth graph and a path. Analogous results were obtained for graphs of bounded Euler genus or apex-minor-free graphs. These tools have been used to solve longstanding problems on queue layouts, non-repetitive colouring, $p$-centered colouring, and adjacency labelling. This paper proves analogous product structure theorems for various non-minor-closed classes. One noteable example is $k$-planar graphs (those with a drawing in the plane in which each edge …
Given a class of graphs G closed under taking minors, we study the maximum degree Δ_n of random graphs from G with n vertices. We prove several lower and upper bounds that hold with high probability. Among other results, we find classes of graphs providing orders of magnitude for Δ_n not observed before, such us \log n/ \log \log \log n and \log n/ \log \log \log \log n.
The clustered chromatic number of a graph class is the minimum integer $t$ such that for some $C$ the vertices of every graph in the class can be colored in $t$ colors so that every monochromatic component has size at most $C$. We show that the clustered chromatic number of the class of graphs embeddable on a given surface is four, proving the conjecture of Esperet and Ochem. Additionally, we study the list version of the concept and characterize the minor-closed classes of graphs of bounded treewidth with given clustered list chromatic number. We further strengthen the above results to solve …
The "clustered chromatic number" of a class of graphs is the minimum integer $k$ such that for some integer $c$ every graph in the class is $k$-colourable with monochromatic components of size at most $c$. We prove that for every graph $H$, the clustered chromatic number of the class of $H$-minor-free graphs is tied to the tree-depth of $H$. In particular, if $H$ is connected with tree-depth $t$ then every $H$-minor-free graph is $(2^{t+1}-4)$-colourable with monochromatic components of size at most $c(H)$. This provides the first evidence for a conjecture of Ossona de Mendez, Oum and Wood (20…
We find the excluded minors for the minor-closed class of lattice path polymatroids as a subclass of the minor-closed class of Boolean polymatroids. Like lattice path matroids and Boolean polymatroids, there are infinitely many excluded minors, but they fall into a small number of easily-described types.
We describe explicitly the admissible families of minors for the totally nonnegative cells of real matrices, that is, the families of minors that produce nonempty cells in the cell decompositions of spaces of totally nonnegative matrices introduced by A. Postnikov. In order to do this, we relate the totally nonnegative cells to torus orbits of symplectic leaves of the Poisson varieties of complex matrices. In particular, we describe the minors that vanish on a torus orbit of symplectic leaves, we prove that such families of minors are exactly the admissible families, and we show that the nonem…

Given a minor-closed class $\mathcal{A}$ of graphs, let $β_{\mathcal{A}}$ denote the supremum over all graphs in $\mathcal{A}$ of the ratio of edges to vertices. We investigate the set $B$ of all such values $β_{\mathcal{A}}$, taking further the project begun by Eppstein. Amongst other results, we determine the small values in $B$ (those up to 2); we show that $B$ is `asymptotically dense'; and we answer some questions posed by Eppstein.
Graph separators are a ubiquitous tool in graph theory and computer science. However, in some applications, their usefulness is limited by the fact that the separator can be as large as $Ω(\sqrt{n})$ in graphs with $n$ vertices. This is the case for planar graphs, and more generally, for proper minor-closed classes. We study a special type of graph separator, called a "layered separator", which may have linear size in $n$, but has bounded size with respect to a different measure, called the "width". We prove, for example, that planar graphs and graphs of bounded Euler genus admit layered separ…
There has been much recent interest in random graphs sampled uniformly from the n-vertex graphs in a suitable minor-closed class, such as the class of all planar graphs. Here we use combinatorial and probabilistic methods to investigate a more general model. We consider random graphs from a `well-behaved' class of graphs: examples of such classes include all minor-closed classes of graphs with 2-connected excluded minors (such as forests, series-parallel graphs and planar graphs), the class of graphs embeddable on any given surface, and the class of graphs with at most k vertex-disjoint cycles…
We show that planar graphs have bounded queue-number, thus proving a conjecture of Heath, Leighton and Rosenberg from 1992. The key to the proof is a new structural tool called layered partitions, and the result that every planar graph has a vertex-partition and a layering, such that each part has a bounded number of vertices in each layer, and the quotient graph has bounded treewidth. This result generalises for graphs of bounded Euler genus. Moreover, we prove that every graph in a minor-closed class has such a layered partition if and only if the class excludes some apex graph. Building on …
Baker devised a powerful technique to obtain approximation schemes for various problems restricted to planar graphs. Her technique can be directly extended to various other graph classes, among the most general ones the graphs avoiding a fixed apex graph as a minor. Further generalizations (e.g., to all proper minor closed graph classes) are known, but they use a combination of techniques and usually focus on somewhat restricted classes of problems. We present a new type of graph decompositions (thin systems of overlays) generalizing Baker's technique and leading to straightforward polynomial-…
We prove that the union-closed sets conjecture is true for separating union-closed families $\mathcal{A}$ with $|\mathcal{A}| \leq 2\left(m+\frac{m}{\log_2(m)-\log_2\log_2(m)}\right)$ where $m$ denotes the number of elements in $\mathcal{A}$.
A finite family $\mathrsfs{F}$ of subsets of a finite set $X$ is union-closed whenever $f,g\in\mathrsfs{F}$ implies $f\cup g\in\mathrsfs{F}$. These families are well known because of Frankl's conjecture. In this paper we developed further the connection between union-closed families and upward-closed families started in Reimer (2003) using rising operators. With these techniques we are able to obtain tight lower bounds to the average of the length of the elements of $\mathrsfs{F}$ and to prove that the number of joint-irreducible elements of $\mathrsfs{F}$ can not exceed $2{n\choose \lfloor n/…
A flat cover is a collection of flats identifying the non-bases of a matroid. We introduce the notion of cover complexity, the minimal size of such a flat cover, as a measure for the complexity of a matroid, and present bounds on the number of matroids on $n$ elements whose cover complexity is bounded. We apply cover complexity to show that the class of matroids without an $N$-minor is asymptotically small in case $N$ is one of the sparse paving matroids $U_{2,k}$, $U_{3,6}$, $P_6$, $Q_6$, or $R_6$, thus confirming a few special cases of a conjecture due to Mayhew, Newman, Welsh, and Whittle. …
In this paper we consider minors of ribbon graphs (or, equivalently, cellularly embedded graphs). The theory of minors of ribbon graphs differs from that of graphs in that contracting loops is necessary and doing this can create additional vertices and components. Thus the ribbon graph minor relation is incompatible with the graph minor relation. We discuss excluded minor characterisations of minor closed families of ribbon graphs. Our main result is an excluded minor characterisation of the family of ribbon graphs that represent knot and link diagrams.
A graph is an apex graph if it contains a vertex whose deletion leaves a planar graph. The family of apex graphs is minor-closed and so it is characterized by a finite list of minor-minimal non-members. The long-standing problem of determining this finite list of apex obstructions remains open. This paper determines the 133 minor-minimal, non-apex graphs that have connectivity two.
A family of sets is union-closed (UC) if the union of any two sets in the family is also in the family. Frankl's UC sets conjecture states that for any nonempty UC family $\mathcal{F} \subseteq 2^{[n]}$ such that $\mathcal{F} \neq \left\{\emptyset\right\}$, there exists an element $i \in [n]$ that is contained in at least half the sets of $\mathcal{F}$. The 3-sets conjecture of Morris states that the smallest number of distinct 3-sets (whose union is an $n$-set) that ensure Frankl's conjecture is satisfied for any UC family that contains them is $ \lfloor{n/2\rfloor} + 1$ for all $n \geq 4$. F…
Given a graph $H$ with at least one edge, let $\operatorname{gap}_{H}(n)$ denote the maximum difference between the numbers of edges in two $n$-vertex edge-maximal graphs with no minor $H$. We show that for exactly four connected graphs $H$ (with at least two vertices), the class of graphs with no minor $H$ is pure, that is, $\operatorname{gap}_{H}(n) = 0$ for all $n \geq 1$; and for each connected graph $H$ (with at least two vertices) we have the dichotomy that either $\operatorname{gap}_{H}(n) = O(1)$ or $\operatorname{gap}_{H}(n) = Θ(n)$. Further, if $H$ is 2-connected and does not yield a…
Let $G$ be a connected $n$-vertex graph in a proper minor-closed class $\mathcal G$. We prove that the extension complexity of the spanning tree polytope of $G$ is $O(n^{3/2})$. This improves on the $O(n^2)$ bounds following from the work of Wong (1980) and Martin (1991). It also extends a result of Fiorini, Huynh, Joret, and Pashkovich (2017), who obtained a $O(n^{3/2})$ bound for graphs embedded in a fixed surface. Our proof works more generally for all graph classes admitting strongly sublinear balanced separators: We prove that for every constant $β$ with $0<β<1$, if $\mathcal G$ is a grap…
This sequel to our paper (Infinite gammoids, 2014) considers minors and duals of infinite gammoids. We prove that a class of gammoids definable by digraphs not containing a certain type of substructure, called an outgoing comb, is minor-closed. Also, we prove that finite-rank minors of gammoids are gammoids. Furthermore, the topological gammoids introduced by Carmesin (Topological infinite gammoids, and a new Menger-type theorem for infinite graphs, 2014) are proved to coincide, as matroids, with the finitary gammoids. A corollary is that topological gammoids are minor-closed. It is a well-kno…
Baker devised a technique to obtain approximation schemes for many optimization problems restricted to planar graphs; her technique was later extended to more general graph classes. In particular, using the Baker's technique and the minor structure theorem, Dawar et al. gave Polynomial-Time Approximation Schemes (PTAS) for all monotone optimization problems expressible in the first-order logic when restricted to a proper minor-closed class of graphs. We define a Baker game formalizing the notion of repeated application of Baker's technique interspersed with vertex removal, prove that monotone …
Reed and Wood and independently Norine, Seymour, Thomas, and Wollan proved that for each positive integer $t$ there is a constant $c(t)$ such that every graph on $n$ vertices with no $K_t$-minor has at most $c(t)n$ cliques. Wood asked in 2007 if we can take $c(t) = c^t$ for some absolute constant $c$. This question was recently answered affirmatively by Lee and Oum. In this paper, we determine the exponential constant. We prove that every graph on $n$ vertices with no $K_t$-minor has at most $3^{2t/3+o(t)}n$ cliques. This bound is tight for $n \geq 4t/3$. More generally, let $H$ be a connected…
The main problem in the area of graph property testing is to understand which graph properties are \emph{testable}, which means that with constantly many queries to any input graph $G$, a tester can decide with good probability whether $G$ satisfies the property, or is far from satisfying the property. Testable properties are well understood in the dense model and in the bounded degree model, but little is known in sparse graph classes when graphs are allowed to have unbounded degree. This is the setting of the \emph{sparse model}. We prove that for any proper minor-closed class $\mathcal{G}$,…
In this very short paper, we point out that the average overlap density of a union-closed family $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ may be as small as $Θ((\log \log |\mathcal{F}|)/(\log |\mathcal{F}|))$, for infinitely many positive integers $n$.
The $\mathit{growth\ rate\ function}$ for a nonempty minor-closed class of matroids $\mathcal{M}$ is the function $h_{\mathcal{M}}(n)$ whose value at an integer $n \ge 0$ is defined to be the maximum number of elements in a simple matroid in $\mathcal{M}$ of rank at most $n$. Geelen, Kabell, Kung and Whittle showed that, whenever $h_{\mathcal{M}}(2)$ is finite, the function $h_{\mathcal{M}}$ grows linearly, quadratically or exponentially in $n$ (with base equal to a prime power $q$), up to a constant factor. We prove that in the exponential case, there are nonnegative integers $k$ and $d \le \…
